AIRCRAFT capable of flying non-stop for close to 20 hours at a time are helping to make the world a smaller place.

International airlines are increasingly looking to use aircraft such as the Boeing 777-200LR to fly to far flung destinations in one hit.

Next February, Emirates will launch the world’s longest non-stop flight from Dubai to Panama City, over a distance of 13,821km.

But that is likely to be eclipsed within months by Air India, which is planning to fly 14,003km non-stop from Bengaluru to San Francisco.

The incredible range of the Boeing 777-200LR makes a direct flight from Sydney to London a possibility, at a distance of 16,983km.

Sydney to New York City is even more realistic, at 15,979km, or Brisbane to London at 16,516km.

Qantas boss Alan Joyce hinted last month that the airline would look at new routes when delivery of new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners begin in 2017.

Nasa is making big promises for Monday, saying it will reveal the answer to a major mystery about Mars.
The US space agency said it would be announcing "a major science finding" regarding the Red Planet at 11:30am EDT (4.30pm in the UK) on the 28 September, to be broadcast live on its website.
There is much speculation that the mystery to be addressed is the phenomena known as 'recurring slope lineae', the dark tendrils observed on the planet surface during warm seasons, which it is speculated is evidence of water.

 

Among those speaking at the briefing will be Alfred McEwen from the University of Arizona in Tucson, who in July published a study on slope activity in Mars's Gale crater, and Lujendra Ojha, a PhD candidate from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta who has collaborated with McEwen and has also studied the possible water activity on Mars.

BlackBerry announced plans on Friday to sell an Android-powered smartphone, in the latest reboot effort from the faded star of the sector.

The Canadian firm said its would begin selling "Priv," described as "a flagship handheld device that will run on the Android operating system with BlackBerry security," later this year.

"Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform," said John Chen, executive chairman and chief executive.

BlackBerry said, however, it "remains committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which enables industry-leading security and productivity benefits."

The company said it "will continue to develop and enhance the BlackBerry 10 operating system and is confirming plans to release platform updates focused on security and privacy enhancements," in March 2016.

The BB 10 operating system was unveiled in 2013 as part of an effort to regain market share lost as consumers around the world shifted to devices running on Google Android and Apple's iOS.

But the operating system share has fallen further, and now represents less than 1 per cent of smartphone users.

BlackBerry, one of the early pioneers of smartphones, has been struggling for years. It has made several efforts to find new customer niches, with low-cost devices, tablets and by shifting its emphasis to software and services.

Have you ever wondered what happened to cloning? Twenty years ago, when Dolly the sheep was still bleating, cloning was seen as the most important topic in bioethics. But over the last few years it dropped off the radar. One of our favorite journals, the New Atlantis (which is published by the Ethics and Public Policy Center), released an unsettling new report last week that sheds a great deal of light on where cloning has gone under the cover of night.

It turns out that cloning has not been put to bed as an ethical problem. If anything, the challenges it presents to human dignity have worsened dramatically:

When the world learned in 1997 of Dolly the sheep, the first clone produced from an adult mammal, a broad public discussion about the ethics of human cloning ensued, largely focused on the nature, meaning, and future of human procreation. However, following the successful derivation of human embryonic stem cells in 1998, the debate over human cloning largely shifted to the question of whether it is acceptable for scientists to create human embryos only to destroy them. The subsequent discovery of promising alternative techniques for generating stem cells without creating or destroying embryos seemed to show that scientific progress would obviate the demand for cloning. But cloning research continued, and American scientists announced in 2013 that they had for the first time successfully obtained stem cells from cloned human embryos.

The New Atlantis report goes on to explain the dangers this macabre research holds for society:

[I]t turns human reproduction into a manufacturing process in the most literal sense: human embryos are created to serve as raw materials for the production of biomedical research supplies. This kind of cloning is today being performed at several scientific labs in the United States, despite the availability of alternative techniques that produce cells of nearly the same scientific and medical value but that require neither the creation nor destruction of human embryos. Cloning-for-biomedical-research also endangers the health and safety of the women called on to undergo dangerous hormone treatments to serve as egg donors. If research cloning is not stopped now, we face the prospect of the mass farming of human embryos and fetuses, and the transformation of the noble enterprise of biomedical research into a grotesque system of exploitation and death.

But if you can believe it, that’s not the worst part of the report. It turns out that much of the new cloning technology is aimed at eventually using cloning for

President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping will test the limits of their personal ties Friday as they wade into issues that have exacerbated tensions between their nations: China's cyberspying in the U.S. and Beijing's territorial disputes in the Asian Pacific.
Discussions on both matters will play out against the backdrop of White House pageantry as Obama hosts Xi for a grand state visit, including a glitzy black-tie dinner. In keeping with the spirit of a state visit _ an honor bestowed on close partners _ the U.S. was emphasizing areas of agreement with Beijing, including on climate change.
U.S. officials said Obama and Xi would release a joint statement on climate change fleshing out how they plan to achieve targets for cutting carbon emissions set at a bilateral summit in Beijing last year. Xi also planned to announce a blueprint for a nationwide cap-and-trade system beginning in 2017, one that would cover highly-polluting sectors ranging from power generation to papermaking.
China will also offer a ``very substantial financial commitment'' to help poor nations transition to low-pollution technologies, the U.S. officials said, without releasing the exact figure.
Climate change is one of the few areas where bilateral cooperation has proceeded smoothly in recent months, largely because Beijing has struggled to contain heavy air, water and soil pollution that has destroyed farmland, sent cancer rates soaring and left its cities cloaked in dense smog.
The progress on China has been offset by disputes over cyberespionage and territorial disputes that have spooked U.S. partners in the region.
``The assumptions that many people had, that cooperation on transnational threats like climate change would ameliorate problems in geopolitical arenas were wrong,'' said Michael Green, White House Asian Affairs director under President George W. Bush and current senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
U.S. officials have had hope for broader cooperation between Obama and Xi since their unusually informal 2013 summit at the Sunnylands estate in southern California. China has completed a 10,000 foot runway on a reclaimed island in the South China Sea, according to a new round of satellite photos released Friday.

The completed runway on Fiery Cross Reef could soon be operational and accelerate additional construction on the reclaimed island, according to a Friday report in Jane’s Defence Weekly.

The island in the Spratly chain is in a central location in the South China Sea about 400 miles from Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines and a likely key component of the China’s South China Sea strategy.

“Fiery Cross Reef is the most extensive new landmass built by China in the Spratly Islands and is believed to be the future hub for its operations in the southern reaches of the South China Sea,” read the report.
“As such, creation of the island’s underlying structure has taken longer than more modest outposts in the area.”

In addition the runway, the Fiery Cross installation also appears to have a deep water port and could serve as a logistics hub for the People’s Liberation Army Navy warships.

The installations are the practical expression of China’s claim to sovereignty of the South China Sea which is disputed by neighboring countries as well as the United States.

“By giving China the means to enforce its expansive ‘dashed-line’ claim, the new islands also challenge international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” according to Jane’s analysis.
“The Philippines’ case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague argues that the dashed line has “no basis in international law.”

In 2010, Mark Zuckerberg donated $100 million to Newark, New Jersey's failing public-school system with the intention of turning around the schools in five years.

The goals Zuckerberg set out to achieve — to enact a number of reforms that would make Newark a model city for education reform — are widely seen as a failure, journalist Dale Russakoff told Business Insider.

So where exactly did that $100 million go if the turnaround was a failure?

Russakoff mapped the money trail in her new book, "The Prize: Who's in Charge of America's Schools," which tracked the five years since Zuckerberg's donation.

The $100 million from Zuckerberg actually became $200 million under the agreement other sources would match his contribution. Here's where that money went:

* Labor and contract costs: $89.2 million

* Charter schools: $57.6 million

* Consultants: $21 million

* Various local initiatives: $24.6 million

The total committed funds comes to less than $200 million as of January 2015 as some funding decisions are still pending.

One of the biggest failures in Zuckerberg's plan to reform Newark schools was the renegotiated teachers' contracts.

Of all the points presidential candidate Ben Carson made in defense of his position that he “would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” most poignant is his reference to taqiyya, one of Islam’s doctrines of deception. 

According to Carson, whoever becomes president should be “sworn in on a stack of Bibles, not a Koran”:

“I do not believe Sharia is consistent with the Constitution of this country,” Carson said, referencing the Islamic law derived from the Koran and traditions of Islam. “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”

Carson said that the only exception he’d make would be if the Muslim running for office “publicly rejected all the tenants of Sharia and lived a life consistent with that.”

“Then I wouldn’t have any problem,” he said.

However, on several occasions Carson mentioned “Taqiyya,” a practice in the Shia Islam denomination in which a Muslim can mislead nonbelievers about the nature of their faith to avoid religious persecution.

“Taqiyya is a component of Shia that allows, and even encourages you to lie to achieve your goals,” Carson said.

There’s much to be said here.  First, considering that the current U.S. president has expunged all reference to Islam in security documents and would have Americans believe that Islamic doctrine is more or less like Christianity, it is certainly refreshing to see a presidential candidate referencing a little known but critically important Muslim doctrine.  

As for the widely cited notion that taqiyya is a Shia doctrine, this needs to be corrected, as it lets the world’s vast majority of Muslims, the Sunnis, off the hook.  According to Sami Mukaram, one of the world’s foremost authorities on taqiyya, 

Taqiyya is of fundamental importance in Islam. Practically every Islamic sect agrees to it and practices it … We can go so far as to say that the practice of taqiyya is mainstream in Islam, and that those few sects not practicing it diverge from the mainstream … Taqiyya is very prevalent in Islamic politics, especially in the modern era. ​

A former leftist lawmaker was convicted Friday for illegally holding a protest of the free trade deal between South Korea and the United States four years ago.
    The Seoul Central District Court fined Lee Jung-hee, former chief of the Unified Progressive Party (UPP), which was dissolved last year, 500,000 won ($420) for staging an unauthorized protest on the streets of central Seoul for about half an hour in November 2011.
   Prosecutors said she did not notify the police of the rally ahead of time. In South Korea, all protesters are required to inform the police of plans for demonstrations.
   Many bypass the law, however, either by holding a one-person demonstration, which does not require prior notice, or claiming they are holding a press conference or a congregation.
    The 46-year-old former lawmaker claimed it was a legitimate speech guaranteed by the Political Party Law, but the court did not recognize her claim.
   "The meeting was far from a typical one with party speeches since others who are not involved in the UPP also gave speeches,"Judge Park Sa-rang said.
   After the sentence was delivered, Lee said, "It is unfair to punish a meeting held by a political party where speeches are given."
   A former presidential candidate Chung Dong-young was also convicted of a similar charge last week.
   The free trade deal between South Korea and the U.S. went into effect in 2012.

The Chicago Tribune filed a lawsuit Thursday alleging that Mayor Rahm Emanuel violated state open records laws by refusing to release communications about city business conducted through private emails and text messages.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, asks a judge to order the mayor to comply with a state Freedom of Information Act request from the Tribune and produce the documents. The lawsuit also seeks to have Emanuel declared in violation of the Illinois Local Records Act for failing to preserve emails and texts he sent or received while doing city business.

The lawsuit claims that, in recent years, Freedom of Information Act requests from the Tribune to the mayor's office "have been met with a pattern of non-compliance, partial compliance, delay and obfuscation." Emanuel's use of private phones and personal email, the lawsuit alleges, allows the mayor to do the public's business without scrutiny and contributes to a "lack of transparency."

The lawsuit is the second the news organization has filed against the Emanuel administration in recent months. In June, the Tribune sued the mayor's office over its refusal to produce some email chains related to a multimillion-dollar no-bid Chicago Public Schools contract now at the center of a federal criminal investigation.

"We are seeking the release of public records on matters of great interest to citizens, but the city refuses to divulge them," Tribune Editor Gerould Kern said in a statement. "Regrettably, the city's denial is part of a pattern of resistance to releasing public documents covered by the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. We are compelled, therefore, to go to court for the second time in three months to force the city's compliance."

Emanuel, appearing Thursday night on WTTW-Ch. 11's "Chicago Tonight," said he had not yet studied the lawsuit but insisted that "we always comply and work through all of the Freedom of Information (requests) in the most responsive way possible."

Asked if he allows government business to be conducted on private email accounts, he said, "I have a practice that my political and personal stays on my private email, and city business is on the government, and that's the way I operate."

The use of personal email and text messages by government officials is raising growing concern across the country from advocates for government transparency, who say the officials use them to circumvent so-called sunshine laws and avoid scrutiny of the media and the public.

Speaker John A. Boehner, under intense pressure from conservatives in his party, will resign one of the most powerful positions in government and give up his House seat at the end of October, throwing Congress into chaos it tries to avert a government shutdown.

Mr. Boehner made the announcement in an emotional meeting with his fellow Republicans Friday morning.

The Republican from Ohio had struggled from almost the moment he took the speaker’s gavel in 2011 to manage the challenges of divided government and the hold together his fractious and increasingly conservative Republican members.

Most recently, Mr. Boehner was trying to craft a solution to keep the government open through the rest of the year, but was under pressure from a growing base of conservatives who told him they would not vote for a bill that did not defund Planned Parenthood. Several of those members were on a path to remove Mr. Boehner though their ability to do so was far from certain.

The Marine Corps and Navy versions are a little pricier.

The U.S. Defense Department on Tuesday confirmed that Chinese fighter jets recently made an “unsafe” interception of an American spy plane in the Asia-Pacific region.

A pair of JH-7 fighter-bombers, known in NATO parlance as Flounders, from the People’s Liberation Army came within 500 feet of an RC-135 from the U.S. Air Force last week over the Yellow Sea, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.

The incident was confirmed by Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook.

“The department is reviewing a report that came in from [U.S. Pacific Command] regarding as you said a Sept. 15 intercept of a U.S. RC-135 by the People’s Republic of China,” he said in response to a question from a reporter during a briefing at the Pentagon.

The incident happened about 80 miles east of the Shandong Peninsula, Cook said.

“One of the maneuvers conducted by the Chinese aircraft in this intercept was perceived as unsafe by the RC-135 aircrew,” he said. “Right now, there’s no indication that this was a near collision.”

The makers of Budweiser aren't satisfied with being the kings of beer. They want an empire.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's biggest brewing company and the owner of Budweiser, announced Wednesday it wants to buy SABMiller, the second-largest brewer — and the maker of long-time rival brand Miller Genuine Draft.
The deal would create a multinational behemoth valued at around $275 billion with annual sales of $73.3 billion, more than three times its closest rival, Heineken.
AB InBev already claims six of the world's most valuable beer brands, which besides Budweiser include Corona, Stella Artois and Beck's. Taking over Miller in the U.S. would likely draw objections from regulators worried the deal might stifle competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.
But whereas a lot of the attention will focus on the best-known brands in the U.S. and Europe, AB InBev's sights are on other countries. As profits wane in the Americas, AB InBev wants to expand into Africa.
Enticingly, SABMiller has a huge presence in Africa, the next beer frontier.
"The days of big profits in the U.S. are gone," said Jonny Forsyth, a global drinks analyst for Mintel, the market research firm. "They have to position themselves in the big beer growth market for the next 10 years."
Shares of SABMiller rocketed about 20 percent higher on news of the approach, pushing its market value to around $90 billion. Shares of AB InBev rose 6 percent.
The companies are being pushed into consolidation by eroding market share and competition, ironically, by the little guy. Craft beers now make up 11 percent in volume in the U.S. market, Mintel said.

Russian forces appear to be expanding their military presence in Syria through the development of two additional bases that pose new challenges for the Obama administration as it struggles to avert a clash with Moscow in the Middle East.

Private satellite images released Tuesday revealed new construction at two Syrian military facilities near the Mediterranean coast, the latest sign Russia is preparing to inject its military forces into the country’s 4½-year war.

While U.S. military officials assessed the importance of the projects and overall buildup, the Obama administration is seeking to transform the potential showdown into a fresh diplomatic initiative to push Syrian President Bashar al-Assad—Russia’s longtime ally—from power, senior administration officials said.

Specifically, officials are exploring whether the U.S. could work with Moscow to ease Mr. Assad from power and pave the way for a successor from his Alawite sect, preventing a collapse of the government and a likely takeover by Islamic extremists, a senior administration official said Tuesday.

President Barack Obama plans to push the idea during a series of meetings next week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “We have to learn more about Russia’s intentions before we know how viable it is,” said one senior administration official.

Back in November 2010, when the North shelled Yeonpyeong Island, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, E-8 Joint STARS, an aircraft that can track ground vehicles, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters were deployed here for a joint exercise that was a show of force.

Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer, had agreed in negotiations in September last year to transfer the technologies to Korea. But U.S. government intervention means the entire project worth W20 trillion is up in the air (US$1=W1,177).

According to data New Politics Alliance for Democracy lawmaker Ahn Gyu-baek obtained from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the military signed the contract with Lockheed Martin last September to buy 40 F-35As for W7.34 trillion.
Lockheed Martin promised to provide Korea with technical assistance on 25 technologies, including the AESA radar. In the negotiations Lockheed Martin boasted that those technologies are worth several trillions of won.
The AESA is a state-of-the-art radar with electronic warfare capabilities that can search and track targets more quickly and precisely than other existing radars. Korea wanted to deploy the next-generation fighter jets warfare-ready by 2025 with these technologies on board.

Pentagon-trained rebels in Syria are reported to have betrayed their American backers and handed their weapons over to al-Qaeda in Syria immediately after re-entering the country.

Fighters with Division 30, the “moderate” rebel division favoured by the United States, surrendered to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, a raft of sources claimed on Monday night.

Division 30 was the first faction whose fighters graduated from a US-led training programme in Turkey which aims to forge a force on the ground in Syria to fight against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

A statement on Twitter by a man calling himself Abu Fahd al-Tunisi, a member of al-Qaeda’s local affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra, read: "A strong slap for America... the new group from Division 30 that entered yesterday hands over all of its weapons to Jabhat al-Nusra after being granted safe passage.

"They handed over a very large amount of ammunition and medium weaponry and a number of pick-ups."

US regulators have charged Volkswagen with manufacturing vehicles designed to evade government pollution controls, and said the German auto giant should urgently fix nearly 500,000 cars.

Volkswagen could face an $18bn penalty over the software made to meet clean-air standards during official emissions testing but which would intentionally turn off during normal operations, US and California regulators said.

As a result, the diesel cars emit greater-than-allowed quantities of pollution linked to smog and various health ills.

"Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean-air standards is illegal and a threat to public health," said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Both the EPA and the California Air Resources Board have launched investigations into the matter. The EPA also referred the case to the US Department of Justice.

Potential civil penalties under the Clean Air Act could be as much as $37,500 per car, or more than $18bn.

It is not what the refugees used on their journey, but what they left behind unused – discarded Red Cross packaged water, crates of peaches, untouched packaged food, unopened baby diapers, brand new strollers, car seats, toys, and other necessities for someone traveling with a baby. Since these items were left behind, it is obvious that there were no babies among them.

Videos are coming in from various regions showing Muslim men fighting, throwing rocks and chairs at each other, breaking windows, throwing feces, bloodying each other's noses in vicious fights, Shia fighting the Sunnis, the same centuries old senseless religious tribal animosity and hatred.

Refugees have taken over Greek Islands, turning them into a gang-like war zone. Greeks are afraid, hiding in their homes, unable to go to work, or to take their children to school. There is no respect for private property and there is no civilized propriety. They are burning cars and flags, throwing feces at passing cars and at people unfortunate enough to be in the way.

A witness at the Italian Austrian border, a Polish travel blog writer, describes circumstances of horror. "This huge mass of people, but these are absolute savages … Vulgar, throwing bottles, shouting loudly, 'We want Germany.'… But is Germany a paradise now?"

They tried to overturn the bus in which I traveled myself with a group of others. They were throwing feces at us, banging on the doors to force the driver to open them, spat at the windshield. How is this savagery to assimilate in Germany? The bus is now damaged, covered with feces, scratched, with broken windows." His group had to travel with Italian police escort from then on. He described the entire area as a war zone.

Should we not be compassionate to our fellow Muslims who, by no fault of their own, are invading Europe, fleeing a civil war in Syria? Since they are mostly young men 20-30 years old, would it not make sense that they stayed with their families and fought for their country, protecting their wives, children, and the elderly? Why trek 4,000 km to another continent whose culture they hate and despise, instead of going to the nearby rich Arab and Muslim countries that could have given them familiar shelter and religious accommodations?

Saudi Arabia promised Germany that they would build a mosque for every 100 refugees they take in. Why? Are they trying to colonize Europe with Islam? Why not take these refugees into Saudi Arabia?

As the blogger said, even though he felt subconscious compassion, he was glad the refugees did not choose Poland as their destination. "Poles are not prepared to accept these people culturally or financially."

Why would refugees seek Germany and Sweden? The Poland MEP, Janusz Koran-Mekka of the conservative-liberal party, shed some light during his recent speech at the EU.

"Poland does not have a problem with immigrants. Poland has a problem with immigrants, who under the absurd Dublin regime (the Dublin Regulation), are being forced to stay at concentration camps although they want to escape from Poland to Germany, Austria, and other EU countries. Why? Because Poland has significantly lower social benefits. If we were to abolish social benefits, there wouldn't be any people coming to Poland and Europe just to live off of handouts. People willing to work are valuable, but they are being sent back to their countries and we take in those unwilling to work. This is a ridiculous policy that results in Europe being flooded with human garbage. Let's state this clearly: human garbage that does not want to work. America built its power because it took in immigrants willing to work and it does not give any handouts. We are ruining Europe and this policy is the cause of the downfall of Europe."

Apple has acknowledged that its after-sales service in Korea has problems.
On Sept. 14, Apple Korea General Manager Richard Yoon attended a parliamentary inspection on the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as a witness and talked about claims of unfairness in the company's refurbished product-based after-sales service in Korea.
But Yoon said the company will not change its policy.
This is against Apple's earlier promise that it will adjust its after-sales policy after the Fair Trade Commission in Korea (FTC) demanded it should change the way it handles defective products.
"Although we acknowledge that Korean customers are feeling burdened by the refurbished goods-based policy, Apple believes it is right to remain this way regarding the after-sales service in the long run in order to raise customer satisfaction," he said during the inspection.
In exchange for a problem product, Apple provides a refurbished one. This cost them around 400,000 won. Once submitted, customers cannot send their request back even if they decide to keep using an unsatisfactory product.

The US Navy on Saturday christened the first of its newest class of destroyers – the more than $3 billion (£1.8 billion), 610-foot (186-metre)-long USS Zumwalt.

Named after the late Admiral Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt, the warship sports advanced technology and a stealthy shape designed to minimise its visibility on enemy radar and reduce the size of its crew.

Among the 15,000-tonne destroyer's cutting-edge features are a composite deckhouse with hidden radar and sensors and an angular shape that officials say will allow it to be confused for a small fishing boat on radars. It also has a wave-piercing hull designed to reduce the ship's wake.

It's the first US ship to use electric propulsion and produces enough power to one day support the futuristic electromagnetic rail gun, which will be tested at sea in 2016.

Rail guns fire a projectile at six or seven times the speed of sound – enough velocity to cause severe damage. The Navy sees them as replacing or supplementing old-school guns.

In the future, it could also be fitted with even more advanced weaponry. This summer, the US Navy plans to test the viability of a laser weapon device in the Persian Gulf. It will be used to shoot down aerial drones at ultra-low cost – it is thought one shot of laser will cost about $1.
