The protests in Ferguson, Mo., on Friday night grew larger than previous days’ gatherings of protesters, despite the rain and cold weather. Police officers used a megaphone to ask protesters to leave the street outside the Ferguson Police Department or they would be arrested. In this video, protesters responded by chanting ”F— the police” and shouting “We don’t give a f— about your laws like you don’t give a f— about our lives.” Warning: Video contains foul language.

Protesters then moved to West Florissant Street and blocked traffic in front of a McDonald’s restaurant and chanted, “Who shut sh– down? We shut sh– down!” Warning: Video contains foul language.

The employees working inside of the 24-hour McDonald’s restaurant were so frightened that they locked the doors and temporarily closed the store until protesters moved down the street.

The protesters meanwhile did not seem nearly as concerned about potential violence, and some even brought their children to help block traffic.

A grand jury’s decision to indict police officer Darren Wilson, who is suspected of shooting 18-year-old Michael Brown, could come at any moment. Residents and law enforcement alike are preparing for a worst-case scenario that could include the loss of life as a result of violent protests.

Two millennia after sword-wielding gladiators fought to the death on the blood-soaked sands of the Colosseum, Italy's culture minister has given the green light to cultural events once again being held within the arena.

Dario Franceschini has thrown his weight behind a proposal to rebuild the wooden floor that once covered the arena and provided the setting for wild animal hunts and gladiatorial combat.

Currently only a small portion of the arena is covered by wooden boards, with the rest exposed to the elements – visitors are able to peer into the labyrinth of narrow tunnels and cramped stone cells that once housed caged animals and gladiators before they emerged into the arena via a network of lifts operated by slaves.

There are no plans to recreate mock gladiatorial battles or fights with lions, leopards and bears.

The minister said that only concerts and other cultural events would be held, insisting that ancient Rome’s monuments should not be turned into a cultural Disneyland.

Occasional concerts are held inside the Colosseum but the rebuilding of the arena’s wooden flooring would allow more frequent events.

“I’m convinced that with the intelligent reconstruction of the arena in the Colosseum, the monument that is a symbol of Italy could become even more attractive to tourism,” Mr Franceschini said at a press conference in Rome on Friday.

He knocked down previous suggestions that football matches could be held in the ancient arena.

Instead there would be classical music concerts and plays. “We’re not going to be hosting a match between Roma and Bayern Munich,” he said.

A miraculous thing happened this week. After years of stonewalling Congress with claims that Lois Lerner’s emails were lost forever and could not be recovered, the IRS finally handed them over to congressional investigators for analysis.

Up to 30,000 missing emails sent by former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner have been recovered by the IRS inspector general, five months after they were deemed lost forever.

The U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) informed congressional staffers from several committees on Friday that the emails were found among hundreds of “disaster recovery tapes” that were used to back up the IRS email system.

The original claim by the IRS that Lerner’s emails were not backed up has always been a lie, and an obvious one at that. You would have to be particularly gullible to believe a government agency that demands citizens maintain personal financial records for years in the off chance of audit would not have failsafe systems in place should there be a catastrophic loss of data.

But that didn’t stop the IRS from lying to Congress over and over again when they insisted that Lerner’s emails could not be produced. The reason is simple: they thought they could get away with it.

Police say a family of five was killed in a car accident on their way to Disney World.
Michael and Trudi Hardman, both elementary school teachers, were on their way to Disney World with their kids Wednesday night when the unthinkable happened. Louisiana State Troopers say five members of the family were killed when their SUV rolled over after striking a median.
"We talked to the 16-year-old driver, which lived — he was properly restrained," Michael Reichardt of Louisiana State Police said. "He said he fell asleep, when he went off of the road — off to the left — he veered back to the right and there was nothing he could do."
Of the eight passengers, six passengers, who apparently weren't wearing seatbelts, were ejected. Both parents and three of their children – ages 4, 7, and 15 – were pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the "kids that passed away was one of our students and one of them that survived was one of our students here at the high school," Jim Lamb said. Lamb is the Principal at Wills Point High School. "The kids were a tremendous blow, but just an entire family was a tremendous, tremendous blow for us."
Three of the kids survived, including the 16-year-old driver.

As we go to press, the White House has reportedly offered Iran a deal regarding its nuclear program, a framework agreement with details to be worked out in the coming months. However, even as the interim agreement is set to expire November 24, it seems the Iranians have not responded to the Obama administration’s offer. And why would they? The White House has made it clear it wants a deal more than the Islamic Republic does. Under the circumstances, why wouldn’t Tehran wait to see how many more U.S. concessions it can extract?

There appears to be compromise on a number of major issues, like the number of centrifuges Iran will be able to keep (around 5,000). Other details, like the pace of sanctions relief and addressing the possible military dimensions of the program, seem to be where the Iranians are trying to force the administration to bend. All we know for certain is that the Obama White House is a long way from where it was a year ago, and not in a good sense.

Back then the administration told Congress not to worry about oversight—it was going to get a good deal or walk away from the table. No deal at all was better than a bad one. Last year, the slogan was “stop, shut, and ship,” which meant the Iranians would have no choice but to cease their weapons program once and for all. Now, the deal would compel the Iranians only to disconnect centrifuges, which would leave them in a position to restart activities promptly—and, without a proper verification regime, secretly.

Researchers have found that people with lower blood levels of vitamin D are twice as likely to die prematurely than those with higher blood levels of vitamin D. 

The finding was based on a systematic review of 32 previous studies that included analyses of vitamin D, blood levels and human mortality rates. 

The specific variant of vitamin D assessed was 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the primary form found in blood. 

"Three years ago, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that having a too-low blood level of vitamin D was hazardous," said Cedric Garland, professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at University of California - San Diego and lead author of the study. 

"This study supports that conclusion, but goes one step further. The 20 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) blood level cutoff assumed from the IOM report was based solely on the association of low vitamin D with risk of bone disease. 

"This new finding is based on the association of low vitamin D with risk of premature death from all causes, not just bone diseases," Garland said. 

Garland said the blood level amount of vitamin D associated with about half of the death rate was 30 ng/ml. He noted that two-thirds of the US population has an estimated blood vitamin D level below 30 ng/ml.

CHINA is building a massive island in the South China Sea that could host an airfield in an area where Beijing is locked in bitter territorial disputes with neighbouring states, a US military spokesman says.

The vast land reclamation project on the Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands is one of several pursued by China but the first that could accommodate an airstrip, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Pool said.

“It appears that’s what they’re working toward,” Pool said.

A harbour also has been dug out on the east side of the reef that appears large enough for tankers and naval warships.

The United States wants China to halt the project and for other governments to cease similar efforts.

“We urge China to stop its land reclamation program, and engage in diplomatic initiatives to encourage all sides to restrain themselves in these sorts of activities,” Pool said.

In the past three months, China has used dredgers to construct an island about 3000-metres-long and 200-300 metres wide on the reef, which was previously under water, according to a report by IHS Jane’s Defence.

Pearl Harbor is getting a fourth Virginia-class submarine next week, adding to the high-tech firepower the Navy has said will accompany the rebalance to the Pacific.

The USS Mississippi, commissioned in 2012, will join the Hawaii, Texas and North Carolina here. Pearl Harbor is the sole Pacific home for Virginia-class subs, which cost an average of $2.7 billion, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Force will be gaining greater undersea capability in the littorals, or offshore seas, where a lot of quiet foreign diesel electric subs operate.

China is building a modern and regionally powerful navy with a "modest but growing" capability for conducting operations beyond China's near-seas region, the United States has said.

The newest, most capable U.S. vessels are moving to the Asia-Pacific region, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert said recently.

New Navy P-8 sub-hunting and surveillance aircraft already have deployed to the region three times and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will be sent there as well, Greenert said.

Despite problems in the Middle East and Europe, "the long-range interests of (the United States) are in the Asia-Pacific," Greenert said.

The 377-foot Virginia-class submarines are capable of very precise slow-speed control. The Navy's first major combat ship designed for a post-Cold War environment, the subs have six side-mounted sonar arrays, plus arrays in the bow, sail and nose, improving capabilities for eavesdropping and mapping the seafloor and minefields.

The subs carry Tomahawk missiles, have 12 Vertical Launch System tubes and four torpedo tubes.

They have "fly-by-wire" controls that improve ship-handling in shallow waters, a reconfigurable torpedo room to accommodate 30 special operations forces, and a nine-man lockout chamber for the rapid deployment of commandos from the submarine.

“I am very concerned about the reduced number of men and women who can meet all of the qualifications required to serve in our armed forces,” said retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Steven Tomaszeski.

Now, retired admirals from Maryland are releasing a report, citing obesity as the number one reason young adults can’t serve in the military.

“Nearly one quarter, 25 percent of all Americans ages 17-24 are too overweight to serve. Obesity is not only affecting those who can qualify for military service, it is also creating challenges for our active duty military,” Tomaszeski said.

In what a taxpayer watchdog group called an unusual abuse, President Obama’s decision over Labor Day to fly home from New York to sleep in his own bed instead of overnighting and then attending the New York wedding of his chef cost Americans $295,227.

It was just one expensive leg of a Labor Day work and fun trip with an overall price tag of $1,539,402.10 in flight expenses alone — not including security costs, food, housing or those associated with his staff.

The financial details were provided to Judicial Watch by the Air Force.

Israel on Wednesday demolished the home of a Palestinian behind a deadly car attack in Jerusalem, pushing ahead with a promised crackdown following a bloody assault on a synagogue.

The government has picked Boeing's AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopter for a strategic project aimed at neutralizing North Korea's multiple rocket launchers and hovercraft that threaten the northwesternmost islands.
A committee chaired by Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Wednesday gave the final nod to the selection of the AH-64E over Bell Helicopter's AH-1Z Viper and the T-129 of Turkish Aerospace Industries.
Seoul will buy 36 Apache helicopters worth W1.8 trillion (US$1=W1,119) between 2016 and 2018.
The Apache came to notice for its ability to destroy tanks during the Gulf War and elsewhere. Its forte is the Longbow fire-control radar, which is supposedly capable of identifying friend or foe among more than 1,000 ground targets. It can trace the movement of 256 targets and prioritize the 16 most dangerous ones.
The Apache can load air-to-ground anti-tank missiles, air-to-air missiles, 30-mm chain guns and infrared surveillance devices.
For instance, Apache helicopters equipped with air-to-ground Hellfire II missiles can hit a target up to 8 km away. They can also strike enemy choppers or fighter jets with the air-to-air Stringer missile.
The government hopes that they will help the country balance out its numerical inferiority to North Korean tanks. As of January 2012, North Korea had about 4,200 tanks compared to South Kore's 2,400.

AIRPORT SCANNER CAN KILL YOU IF YOU HAVE A PACEMAKER–DIANA TOLSTOVA COLLAPSES AND DIES AFTER GOING THROUGH ONE IN THE SOUTHERN RUSSIAN TOWN

A woman fitted with a pacemaker has died after passing through an airport scanner in the southern Russian town of Ulan-Ude.

Diana Tolstova, 30, died in the airport minutes after passing through the scanner. Her husband Maxim, 33, said that they had provided papers proving that Mrs Tolstova was fitted with the heart device – which is adversely affected by airport scanners.

"I don’t know what happened but she went through it anyway," he told Central European News agency.

"When we got to the departure gate she began to feel dizzy and suddenly collapsed.

"I grabbed her in my arms and called for medical help.

"It took a few minutes before hospital doctors arrived, and when they did they didn’t know what to do. They didn’t give her any first aid and they didn’t call an ambulance.

"My beautiful Diana died in my arms."

Airport officials said that they are investigating the case.

President Obama decided to expand the U.S. military role in Afghanistan in a classified order, the New York Times reported late Friday.

Obama signed the order in recent weeks, according to the Times, giving troops a broader mandate in 2015 than previously planned.

The new authorization allows U.S. troops to carry out missions against the Taliban and other militant groups that threaten Afghanistan’s stability with the use of jets, bombers and drones.

The president announced the final drawdown plan in May, at the time saying the 9,800 troops remaining in Afghanistan wouldn't have a combat role, but would train Afghan forces and hunt the “remnants of Al Qaeda" to end the 13-year war. 

The Times reported that a "lengthy and heated debate" led to the decision to change the mission.

Earlier this month, US defense officials had said commanders were weighing a delay in withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan after the country's protracted election set back preparations for the transition.

The new head of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, General John Campbell, and other senior officers were reviewing whether a larger force needs to stay in place longer than initially planned, officials said.

At its peak, the US force rose to more than 100,000 in Afghanistan, and there are now 27,000 troops deployed.

Bill Cosby played a sold-out comedy show on Friday in Florida, despite a wave of sexual assault allegations this week that prompted the cancellation of several upcoming shows and two major studios to halt projects involving the comedian.

Cosby, 77, took the stage to a standing ovation and gave the audience a thumbs up at the King Center in Melbourne. The 90-minute show concluded without incident.

Police patrolled the venue ahead of the show, while a handful of protesters joined some attendees outside the center.

"I don't want it reported that nobody cared, said Julie LeMaitre, 47, who carried a sign that said, "Rape is no joke."

Although the show was sold out, there were patches of empty seats, including eight in the center of the orchestra section.

The show went ahead despite the cancellation of Cosby's Las Vegas performance next week and four other shows in Arizona, Illinois, South Carolina and Washington state next year. With NBC and Netflix also dropping projects with the comedian this week, the allegations have threatened Cosby's wholesome public image and future viability in show business.

Still, many ticketholders said they had no qualms about attending the comedian's performance.

"It's his personal life, and I don't really care," said Melbourne resident Russ McDonald, 62, a retired teacher.

The government struck an agreement with a southeastern coastal county Friday to build a new nuclear power plant there, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Uljin County, some 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is currently home to an existing nuclear power plant with six reactors. The government had been negotiating for the past 15 years with the county to build an additional plant there.
Under the deal, the government plans to provide 280 billion won ($252.3 million) worth of infrastructure and other welfare programs to the county, where four more nuclear reactors will be added by 2022.
The deal calls for the county to cooperate with the state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.’s project to build the four reactors in return for the compensation package composed of nearly 200 billion won worth of infrastructure assistance and over 80 billion won worth of education and medical facility building.

“The deal is meaningful since it has been reached after prolonged negotiations,” Prime Minister Chung Hong-won said. “It will serve as a new landmark for resolving energy and regional problems together.”
South Korea currently operates 23 nuclear reactors at four nuclear power plants, which generate 26 percent of its total power supply.
The government plans to build up to 10 new nuclear reactors, in addition to the five already under construction, by 2035 to boost the share of nuclear power to 29 percent.

About 180,000 Koreans are estimated to be living as undocumented immigrants in the United States, making them the eighth-largest ethnic group among the country’s 11.3 million illegal residents, according to U.S. think-tank Pew Research Center.
Depending on their eligibility, some of the illegal Korean migrants may benefit from President Barack Obama’s order, announced Thursday, to protect nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation.

Under Obama’s plan, illegal residents who have been living in the U.S. for more than five years and who have a child who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident can apply for a three-year work permit. One has to have no criminal record, pay taxes and undergo and pass a background check in order to be fully qualified.

The U.S. administration expects some 4.1 million people to be eligible to apply.
Obama is also granting temporary residency cards for young undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. before age 16 prior to Jan. 1, 2010, and have lived in the country for at least five years. Some 300,000 young illegal migrants are expected to benefit from the grant of temporary resident permits.
Illegal immigrants accounted for 3.5 percent of the entire U.S. population, accounting for 5.1 percent of its working population back in 2012.

Mexicans made up about half of all unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2012. There were 5.9 million illegal immigrants from Mexico living in the country, followed by those from El Salvador and Guatemala.

The European parliament is poised to call for a break-up of Google, in one of the most brazen assaults so far on the technology group’s power.

The gambit increases the political pressure on the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, to take a tougher line on Google, either in its antitrust investigation into the company or through the introduction of laws to curb its reach.

A draft motion seen by the Financial Times says that “unbundling [of] search engines from other commercial services” should be considered as a potential solution to Google’s dominance. It has the backing of the parliament’s two main political blocs, the European People’s Party and the Socialists.

A vote to effectively single out a big US company for censure is extremely rare in the European parliament and is in part a reflection of how Germany’s politicians have turned against Google this year.

German centre-right and centre-left politicians are the dominant force in the legislature and German corporate champions, from media groups to telecoms, are among the most vocal of Google’s critics.

President Barack Obama would veto any legislation hatched by Republicans to undo his immigration executive action granting relief to millions, according to a senior administration official.

The official left no doubt that the White House is prepared for a shutdown standoff if Republicans attach a rider to the upcoming spending bill needed to keep the government open past Dec. 11.

In a background briefing ahead of the president’s primetime speech Thursday, four senior administration officials detailed the president’s sweeping new executive actions — the winners and the losers — and the legal basis for them.

Ultimately, the president decided to act this week after consulting with Democratic leaders, concluding that Republicans would react the same way whether he acted now or later, so “Why wait,” said one official.

There are more ultra-wealthy people in Canada this year than last year and they’re getting richer, according to a global study of the richest of the rich.

The Wealth-X and UBS World Ultra Wealth Report 2014 determined there were 5,304 ultra-wealthy people, defined as those with more than $30 million US in assets, in Canada in 2014. That’s up 6.5 per cent from the 4,980 counted in 2013.

As a proportion of total wealth in Canada, the ultra-wealthy hold about 9.3 per cent, much less than the 12.5 per cent in the U.S. or 22.6 per cent in Germany. The proportion of Canadian assets they control is down, as the rest of the population benefits from an expanding economy, the report said.

The study finds that 73 per cent of Canada’s ultra-high net worth individuals were self-made and just 13 per cent inherited money, with the remainder getting their wealth from a combination of both.

Mining and oil money

The study shows the strong role of natural resources in building assets in Canada, with 23 per cent of the richest individuals involved in metals and mining and 12 per cent involved in oil, gas and other fuels.

I like recycling. I like innovative solutions to California’s drought. And I like ice cold Coca-Cola. So I figured I’d love Mayor Eric Garcetti’s announcement last week that the city will provide 1,000 free rain collection barrels -- and workshops on how to use them -- to residents around the city in partnership with Coca-Cola and Keep Los Angeles Beautiful.

Rain collection in the parched L.A.!  Now there’s a long overdue idea.  And yeah, it’s mildly dystopian that the donated materials are recycled 55-gallon corn syrup barrels, the sketchy ingredient in the company's sugary drinks, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?

Judging from the city’s HGTV-esque installation video, residents who were lucky enough to score a barrel stand to collect a lot of water for gardening and other “non-drinkable” activities -- assuming it rains again one day.  One inch of rainfall on a 1,200 square foot roof can produce up to 700 gallons of water.  My back of the envelope math concludes that, if L.A. someday returns to its historic average of around 15 inches of annual rainfall, 1,000 properly installed barrels could collect more than 10 million gallons of rain. 

Coca-Cola has been doing these kinds of projects in communities around the world as part of its Water Stewardship plan. It says all the right things on its splashy website about how water is our most precious resource.  That’s because, by its own admission, “Water is to Coca-Cola as clean energy is to BP.”  Which is to say that Coca-Cola operations have wreaked havoc on the environment -- and now it needs to do something about it before the damage starts to jeopardize its reputation -- and its operations.

“But now” tells us that something has been done to solve the problem of our sins.

What is it that solves the problem of our sins?  “A righteousness of (from) God has been manifested apart from the law…through faith in Jesus Christ” (3:21-22).  Luther referred to these verses as “the center of the whole Bible.”  Martin Lloyd Jones called it “the most important and crucial passage in the whole of Scripture.”  Leon Morris said it is “possibly the most important single paragraph ever written.”

This passage is the basis for the great Reformation doctrine of sola fide–the idea that we are saved by faith alone and not by the works of the law.

But, Paul makes a critical clarification here. He makes it clear that the righteous status we so desperately need comes through faith (v.22), but it is not the faith itself that is the grounds of our justification.  The grounds of our justification–the reason God can declare us sinners to be righteous–is because of the righteousness of Christ given to us.  He can regard us as righteous because a righteous status has been granted to us.

Thus, faith is merely the instrument or the means by which that righteous status is attained.

Indonesian police are facing an international outcry over a recruitment requirement that female job applicants must undergo a virginity test.
Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental organization, reported on Tuesday that the women had to undergo a so-called "two-finger" test to check if their hymens were intact.
The organization described the process as "degrading" and "discriminatory," while pointing out that such tests were a cultural norm in a patriarchal country.
As of Tuesday, Indonesia's national police recruitment post online read, "Women who want to be policemen must also undergo virginity tests. So all women who want to become policewomen should keep their virginity."
Police spokesman Ronny Sompie said the check-ups were "done in a professional manner" and aimed to ensure that applicants did not have a sexually transmitted disease.

HYDROGEN POWERED CARS READY FOR MASS PRODUCTION FROM TOYOTA–THE 2015 TOYOTA MIRAI FOR $57,500

Welcome to the chicken and egg show, the most overused metaphor in the fuel-cell business. It probably wasn’t uttered by Sir William Grove in 1839 when he discovered the principle of producing electricity from an electro-chemical reaction between hydrogen and air, but I bet it was in 1955 when General Electric’s Willard Grubb and Leonard Niedrach produced the first proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

So which should come first? The chicken, a production fuel-cell car, or the egg, a hydrogen supply infrastructure? Speeches were filled with eggy chickens at this week’s launch of Toyota’s Mirai (meaning ‘The Future’), the world’s first mass-produced fuel-cell car; Honda’s FCX Clarity was first on sale, but was made in much smaller numbers than the tens of thousands of Mirais that Toyota is planning by the 2020s.

Over two decades and countless squillions of R&D blood and treasure has produced this - a state-of-the-art, showroom-ready, four-door saloon, capable of 111mph, 0-62mph in 9.6secs and a range of 300 miles on the 5kg of hydrogen stored in two tanks under its rear seats. Refuelling them takes about five minutes.

Toyota’s major innovations in this car are those immensely strong and lightweight woven carbon-fibre tanks, the 153bhp/247lb ft fuel cell and a revised power converter which steps up voltage 3 times to 650 volts allowing the use of a smaller electric motor. Toyota claims it has reduced the overall costs by 95 per cent compared with its previous fuel-cell car, the 2008 FCEV Highlander.  

So what about the egg? Big Oil has shown itself remarkably uninterested in supplying hydrogen to the public, even though it creates a lot of hydrogen by steaming it out of natural gas for refining petrol. So Toyota is reluctantly becoming an infrastructure provider. In America the car maker is investing $7.2 million along with partners Aire Liquide to install a 12-station East Coast hydrogen highway between New York and Rhode Island to kick start sales. California is already familiar with fuel cells and there are about 10 filling stations with the Californian Energy Commission promising $200 million to build that total to 68 stations in the next two years.

But despite the ban, sources told The Saturday Telegraph that mushrooms could still be bought from street dealers.

Bali police have increased their presence in the main tourist centres and will launch a special traffic operation targeting tourists dangerously operating scooters. Bali Tourist Police will also run a visa operation next week targeting foreigners.

President Obama has opened a new front in his hard line against the incoming Republican Congress by releasing more detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, against lawmakers' objections.

The Pentagon announced Thursday that four al Qaeda fighters from Yemen, including a senior figure who facilitated travel to Afghanistan for Arab extremists, and a Tunisian extremist would be transferred to Slovakia and Georgia.

The transfers leave 143 detainees at Guantanamo, which Obama has vowed to close. Republican lawmakers, who have been pressing the administration to stop releasing detainees amid reports that some former prisoners had joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, were furious.

Two Russian strategic bombers circled the U.S. island of Guam last week in what U.S. defense officials say is the latest in a series of nuclear provocations by Moscow.

The bombers were identified by air defenses as Tu-95 Bear H nuclear-capable aircraft that circumnavigated the strategic U.S. military outpost on Friday—amid heightened tensions with Moscow regarding a new buildup of Russian forces in and along the border of eastern Ukraine.

“U.S. Pacific Command can confirm that two aircraft circumnavigated Guam on November 13th,” said spokesman  Maj. Christian Devine. “The aircraft were flying safely in international airspace and in accordance with international norms; as such, the decision was made to not intercept them.”

Friday’s flights were the second time in the past two years that Russia conducted unusual long-range bomber missions around the island. Two Tu-95s circled the island on Feb. 12, 2013 and were intercepted by F-15 jets.

The latest bomber flights around the island, located 4,000 miles west of Hawaii, appeared timed to coincide with the G-20 summit in Brisbane, Australia and come amid new tensions with Russia over Ukraine.

NATO warplanes have had to scramble 400 times this year in response to an increase in Russian air activity around Europe not seen since the Cold War, the alliance's chief said on Thursday.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members have sought to fill gaps in the alliance's land, air and sea defences since Russia annexed Crimea and backed a secessionist movement in the eastern part of Ukraine.

Speaking to U.S., German and Estonian troops at a newly expanded and renovated air base in western Estonia, which once housed a Soviet military installation, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the problem was not just where the Russians are flying but that they are not turning on their transponders or communicating.

He said the flights - which have risen 50 percent over the last year - posed a risk to commercial air traffic.

"This pattern is risky and unjustified, so NATO remains vigilant. We are here and we are ready to defend all our allies against any threats,” Stoltenberg said in a speech after meeting Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas.

A seventh woman has stepped forward publicly with allegations that the comedian and actor Bill Cosby sexually assaulted her decades ago.

In an interview on WPTV in West Palm Beach, Fla., the woman, Therese Serignese, 57, a registered nurse, accused Mr. Cosby of drugging and having sex with her after one of his shows at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1976 when she was 19. Although Mr. Cosby’s lawyers have routinely characterized such allegations as unfounded, the drumbeat of similar accusations over the last few weeks has led Mr. Cosby to withdraw from television interviews and has cost him several business opportunities as companies have canceled projects.

Mr. Cosby has been all but silent on the matter. On Wednesday, The Associated Press released an interview it conducted with him on Nov. 6 in which he would not answer questions on camera about the allegations.

Amy Berg’s “An Open Secret” may not come out and say “X Men” director Bryan Singer molested under age boys, but it’s certainly the impression that’s left with the viewer. The explosive documentary screened tonight at NYC DOCS to an emotional crowd with divided reactions. While the movie depicts carefully many examples of abuse– sexual, power, and otherwise– visited upon children by craven adults in the film business, it’s also going to be a field day for some lawyers.

It seems that Berg was working with Michael Egan for two years, she says, before as she puts it “he found a lawyer who thought he had a case” against Bryan Singer and three other defendants. The lawyer was Jeff Herman, who put on quite a show for the press. But by the end of this summer, the cases were dropped, settlements were paid. Berg was undoubtedly left high and dry by Egan, upon whose story she depended for the film. She went ahead it with it anyway. So Egan gets to press his story and accusations in “Open Secret” just Singer, Garth Ancier, Gary Goddard, and David Neuman thought they were in the clear.

President Obama announced an expansive new set of executive actions in a prime-time address Thursday that the White House says will give legal status and work permits to 5 million illegal immigrants.

Obama hailed the moves as leading to a “more fair and more just” system in an address that lambasted Congress for not approving legislation and warned Republicans against triggering a government shutdown.

In a sharp rebuke to Republican critics, Obama challenged his political opposition to “pass a bill” if they did not like his actions, and argued his approach could not be dismissed as “amnesty.”

“Amnesty is the immigration system we have today – millions of people who live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules, while politicians use the issue to scare people and whip up votes at election time,” Obama said.

Under the president’s plan, the parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents could apply for work permits and deferred deportation. Obama is also expanding eligibility for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which offers protections to immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

The Department of Homeland Security will also narrow their focus to those illegal immigrants with criminal records, gang affiliations or ties to terrorism. 

“If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law,” Obama said. “If you’re a criminal, you’ll be deported.  If you plan to enter the U.S. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up.”

The Department of Homeland Security will grant temporary protected status to people from the three West African countries most affected by Ebola who are currently residing in the United States, department officials said on Thursday.

People from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone in the United States as of Thursday may apply for protection from deportation, as well as for work permits, for 18 months, said a Department of Homeland Security official.

After 18 months, the Secretary of Homeland Security will assess whether the protection should be extended, based on the level of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

The move is a response to the Ebola epidemic, which has claimed more than 5,000 lives, mostly in the three West African countries.

In order to prevent a mass migration from West Africa to the United States, nationals from these countries who arrive after Thursday will not be eligible for protected status.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials estimate that 8,000 people will be eligible to apply.

"The Ebola response in the United States has been front and center in the United States government at high levels," said a Department of Homeland Security official. "This designation has been part of that constant monitoring, reevaluation and reassessment of the appropriate response."

The United States reserves temporary protected status for people from countries experiencing conditions deemed too dangerous to return to, such as Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

Samsung Electronics agreed with Apple to produce application processors (APs) from next year for iPhones and iPads, sources said Monday.

The agreement means Samsung will become a primary supplier of APs to Apple, pushing its chief Taiwanese rival TSMC back to second place.

From 2016, the company will supply 80 percent of APs used in Apple devices, and TSMC the remainder.

Unlike conventional memory chips such as DRAMs and NANDs, APs are categorized as logic chips which give producers much higher margins.

AP chips function as the brain in computing devices. Apple will design its A-series APs, and Samsung will fabricate them in partnership with GlobalFoundries (GF), a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif.

“Apple has designated Samsung as the primary supplier of its next A-series chips powering iOS devices from 2016 as the alliance with GlobalFoundries (GF) enabled Samsung to cut off capacity risk,” a source familiar with the deal said.

The value of the deal is said to be worth “billions of dollars,” according to the sources.

Affirmative action policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been challenged in court.

A lawsuit against Harvard alleges the university limits the number of Asian-Americans it admits each year, arguing that white, black, and Hispanic applicants are given racial preferences over better qualified Asian-American applicants.

The lawsuit against UNC alleges the university is not in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling that concluded colleges trying to diversify their student population should pursue “race-neutral alternatives” first, rather than race-based affirmative action policies.

The suits were filed Monday in Boston and Greensboro, North Carolina, by the Project on Fair Representation.

The plaintiff in both is Students for Fair Admissions, a nonprofit whose members include students and parents.

The universities didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The largest solar power plant of its type in the world - once promoted as a turning point in green energy - isn't producing as much energy as planned.

One of the reasons is as basic as it gets: The sun isn't shining as much as expected.

Sprawling across roughly 5 square miles of federal desert near the California-Nevada border, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System opened in February, with operators saying it would produce enough electricity to power a city of 140,000 homes.

Islamic State militants on Sunday released yet another video that appears to show the murder of an American hostage.
The clip shows a masked man with a decapitated head covered in blood which he says is Peter Kassig.
Kassig, a former soldier, was captured by militants in Syria last year in October while working for charity groups in Lebanon and Syria.
The video also shows several other men being beheaded.
The U.S. says it's working to determine the authenticity of the video.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "horrified by the cold-blooded murder," adding that Britain's Foreign Office was analyzing the video.

Now that the American public has had a chance to see that the very few cases of Ebola in this country have little chance of leading to a dangerous outbreak, it's time to return our attention to the three West African nations where the virus is a daily and deadly threat.
President Barack Obama has proposed doing just that with a call to allocate $6.2 billion, on top of the $1 billion the U.S. government already has committed, to fight Ebola. Some of that money would be for better monitoring and tracking within the United States, but the bulk of it would go toward escalating the battle in West Africa, both for treatment now and for the development of future vaccines or treatments.
It's frustrating that many countries have not been as generous as the United States and, relative to its size, Cuba in offering aid to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Australia, for instance, banned many travelers from the three Africa countries from obtaining Australian visas without offering any real assistance to contain the disease in Africa. Only last week ― after withering criticism from the Australian news media ― did the government ramp up its effort. And even now it isn't sending any of its desperately needed medical personnel to help in the anti-Ebola effort, but rather will contract with a private provider to run a 100-bed facility. Last week, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim lambasted the many Asian nations that have contributed little or nothing.
