The U.S. is considering deploying more missile defense assets to Asia to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, said Adm. James Winnefeld, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a speech during a security forum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
Describing North Korea, along with Iran, as the “chief threats” to the U.S., Winnefeld underscored the need to deploy a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery in South Korea. He said Washington was in talks with Seoul over the new deployment.

The House on Thursday adopted a proposal to bolster an investigation into the Department of Homeland Security's release of illegal immigrants known to have committed crimes.
Passed 218-193, Rep. Steve King's (R-Iowa) amendment to the 2015 appropriations bill funding the Justice Department, Commerce Department and science programs would direct $5 million toward an investigation.
"It is de facto amnesty that is going on in the Department of Homeland Security," King said.
"So my request is that $5 million out of this administrative budget be directed to investigating the actions of the Department of Homeland Security and coming back with an analysis of what is going on and why that we have so many criminals released onto the streets of America," King said, citing statistics that nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants pending deportation had been released, including more than 36,000 criminals.
Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Commerce, Justice and Science subcommittee, said the House should instead consider comprehensive immigration reform.
"The people's House should vote on this matter so that we can come to some conclusion on these issues," Fattah said.
Fattah further argued that the appropriations measure was not an appropriate place to craft immigration policy.

SOUTH KOREA GROWS ITS ECONOMY NOT BY IMPORTING ENERGY BUT CREATING THEM–THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA HAS 23 NUCLEAR PLANTS TO POWER ITS GROWING ECONOMY–KEEPING ITS OPERATION RATE ABOVE 80% CAPACITY
The operation rate of the country's nuclear power plants sank to its lowest level in 25 years, as a number of the plants were suspended for faulty parts supplied under fake tests and also underwent regular maintenance work, data showed on Sunday.
According to the Korea Electric Power Corp., the operation rate of the country's 23 nuclear power plants stood at 75.2 percent in the first 10 months of the year.
Last year, the comparable figure was 82.3 percent, also down 8.4 percentage points from a year earlier.
The country started the commercial operation of its first nuclear power plant in 1978. The previous record-low operation rate was 73 percent in 1988.
A series of nuclear power plant corruption scandals has suspended the operation of six out of 23 nuclear power plants nationwide, and thermal power plants have been in full operation for the past several months.
The operation rate of the country's nuclear power plants has ranged from 40 percent to 70 percent in the 1970s and the 1980s.
But since the 1990s, the operation rate had never fallen below the 80-percent level.

GM RECALLS 11.2 MILLION CARS FROM JANUARY THROUGH MAY 2014
General Motors Co., recalling an additional 2.7 million vehicles for potentially faulty brake lights and other issues, pushed its total number of cars and trucks called back for repairs in the U.S. this year to 11.2 million, the most ever for the automaker.
The 2014 total through mid-May is more than GM recalled during the previous six years combined, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records. The Detroit-based company’s previous peak year for recalls in the U.S. was 10.7 million in 2004, according to NHTSA records.

A man wielding a saw slashed and injured two members of Japanese female pop group AKB48, rated by Guinness as the world's biggest such group, at a fan event in Japan, leaving the country stunned at the extremely rare violent crime.
The group, known for its perky routines, was shaking hands with fans at a meet-and-greet function on Sunday (local time), when the man attacked them with a weapon described variously as a 50-cm-long saw or a hatchet, Japanese media said.
"This sort of thing is unimaginable," one fan told Japanese television. "I'm in shock."
Group members Rina Kawaei,19, and Anna Iriyama, 18, received emergency surgery for cut and broken fingers, with Iriyama also suffering cuts to the face, media said.
"The surgery ended successfully and their condition is stable," their manager said. "They should be able to leave hospital tomorrow."
A male staff member received cuts to his hand.
Police arrested a 24-year-old high school dropout for attempted murder after the event, in the northeastern city of Takizawa, was interrupted by screams of "Stop!" and "No!"
There were no bag checks, and fans have said most of the group's events have only cursory checks at best, prompting newspapers to call for tighter security. The incident featured on several newspaper front pages and television shows.
Security checks tend to be light in Japan, which has stiff gun control laws, and violent crime involving weapons is rare.

The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.
The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.
The disclosure marked a rare instance in which a CIA officer working overseas had his cover — the secrecy meant to protect his actual identity — pierced by his own government. The only other recent case came under significantly different circumstances, when former CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed as officials of the George W. Bush administration sought to discredit her husband, a former ambassador and fierce critic of the decision to invade Iraq.

EUROPE ELECTION GETS TO MOVE TO THE RIGHT–AS MASSIVE GAINS FROM AUSTRIA, GREECE, AND FRANCE IN 2014
The popular right-wing have gained massively in Austria and Greece, and in France Marine Le Pen's Front National will gain at least 20 seats. The non-mainstream right of the European Parliament will hold up to 83 seats, according to an exit poll analysis published by Bell Pottinger, a Brussels public relations firm.
Reuters reports that a top French politician characterized Le Pen's victory as an "earthquake":
Without waiting for the final result, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls went on television to call the breakthrough by the anti-immigration, anti-euro party in one of the EU's founding nations "an earthquake" for France and Europe.
The centre-right parties which form the European People’s Party (EPP) at the European Parliament look like coming out the biggest party in the assembly, with the Social Democrats group lagging behind.
The EPP is the group with which the British Conservative MEPs sat until 2009, when David Cameron removed his party because of the relentless drive of the EPP for more powers for EU institutions.

Robert Gates as selected as the new president of the Boy Scouts of America. Robert, an Eagle Scout in his youth and former Secretary of Defense, was elated with the selection.
Robert stated that he was pleased that queers were welcomed in the boy scouts but was severely displeased that adult predatory queers were not allowed to serve as scout masters and leaders.
During his tenure as Secretary of Defense, Robert has queerified the military which he counted as one of his major accomplishments which he would like to replicate with the Boy Scouts.
Robert noted that with many predatory queers are being thrown out of the priesthood, teaching, and other professions that have significant contact with children. Robert stated that this scum could be easily transitioned into the Boy Scouts and serve as role models for the upcoming queer scouts. The scandal at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Hospital lifted the curtain of secrecy on the VA’s secret waiting lists. The VA lies while patients die.
This is by no means a new phenomenon. The nation’s single-payer system for veterans has long been greatly overloaded. Congress tried to fix it in 1996 by passing a law requiring that any veteran needing care had to be seen within 30 days.
The VA is supposed to have a wonderful electronic medical records system, and the EMR is supposed to be the magic formula for efficiency and quality. The VA gamed the electronic system to hide the waiting lists.
Readers of the British press will be struck by the similarities between fudging waiting lists at VA hospitals and stacking patients in ambulances outside U.K. hospitals. Finding it impossible to comply with a National Health Service mandate that all patients admitted to an emergency room be seen within four hours, hospitals kept patients waiting in ambulances outside the ER!
Britain’s NHS and our VA system are both administratively top-heavy, command-and-control bureaucracies. All such systems tend to expand, along with their budgets, as administrators hire more and more people to do what they were supposed to be doing. There is no competition, and virtually no accountability. Every problem is always someone else’s responsibility. Mandates and quotas, rather than incentives, are used to motivate those in the trenches.
Physicians working in the VA system, like the NHS, are mostly salaried employees. There are many fine doctors in both systems, but the incentives in place do not reward them for going the extra mile, seeing the additional patient or doing another procedure if it means going past their shift. Inevitably, these systems create backlogs and lengthening queues for care.

SECRET TWITTER LEAVING CLUES OF MONEY STASH AROUND SF, CA
A MYSTERY benefactor is hiding cash around San Francisco and tweeting photos with location clues as part of a “social experiment for good”.
The hide-and-seek game began on Thursday night, with the secret donor sharing a picture of a vegetable patch and the caption “Love arugula? So do we ;)” on the Twitter account @HiddenCash.
Dozens of tweets have since been posted, containing clues to $100 and smaller notes stashed under benches, in unisex bathrooms and in parks around the city.
Once the money is found, the lucky recipient must tweet a photo of themselves with the cash, like this:

CHINESE FIGHTER PLANES SU-27 DOES A 50 METER FLY BY AGAINST JAPAN OP-3C WHILE MONITORING THE SOUTH SEA
Japan's Defense Ministry officials say a Chinese warplane has flown exceptionally close to Japanese self-defense force aircraft over the East China Sea.
Officials say a Chinese SU-27 fighter flew from behind and passed an OP-3C image data collecting plane of the Maritime Self-Defense Force at around 11 AM on Saturday near the median line between Japan and China.
Japan and China have declared overlapping air defense dentification zones in the airspace.
The Chinese aircraft came as close as about 50 meters from the OP-3C.
About 1 hour later, an SU-27 flew within 30 meters of one of the Air Self-Defense Force's electronic intelligence planes in almost the same airspace. It is not clear whether it was the same plane.
Defense officials say it is the first time that a Chinese aircraft has flown less than 100 meters from a Japanese self-defense plane. The planes gave no radio warning before approaching.
The Japanese aircraft suffered no damage. Sources say the self-defense planes were on a mission to monitor activities in the East China Sea, including joint naval drills by Chinese and Russian navies.
Pictures taken by the Self-Defense Forces show white missile-like objects beneath wings of the Chinese plane.

KOREAN SAMSUNG TO GO IT ALONE WITH SMARTPHONE WRISTWATCH–TO UNVEIL THIS JULY, 2014
A stand-alone smart watch and a virtual-reality headset: Samsung is reportedly getting ready to introduce both.
The South Korean tech giant is in talks with telecom carriers in the U.S., South Korea and Europe about a smartwatch that can make and receive phone calls without having to be connected to another device through Bluetooth, the Wall Street Journal said Friday, citing unnamed sources.
Samsung hopes to unveil the gadget in June or July, the report said. The device would also be able to take pictures and send email, and it would include a GPS chip and a heart monitor. The Journal said the device would run on Samsung's Tizen operating system.
Since last fall, the tech company has released three smartwatches and a fitness tracker, but each of those devices must be tethered to a Samsung phone or tablet to work.

Verdi's "Requiem": On Monday at 8 p.m., a concert of Verdi's "Requiem" will take place at the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Hollywood. General seating is $25. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
