Retailers here said more consumers are aware of Oled TVs and demand has been slowly rising.

"There is a group of customers who would buy the latest TVs, like Oled TVs. There are not a lot of these people at the moment, but the numbers are picking up," said Mr Alvin Lee, managing director of Audio House.

Mr Terry O'Connor, CEO of Courts Singapore, said: "We have seen sales grow five times more for Oled TVs."

He added: "We foresee that Oled TVs will be the next dominant display technology as picture quality is undisputedly better and they are slimmer due to the lack of backlight. They are eco-friendly and efficient too."

Also helping the Oled TV's cause is the fact that prices have fallen by more than half since they were launched in 2013. At the time, a 55-inch Oled TV cost about $15,000. A similar model now sells for under $5,000.

The latest curved-screen 55-inch model, due this month, will be priced at $6,999.

Another push factor for Oled TV sales is the recent availability of larger models.

"There is an increasing trend of consumers asking for Oled TVs, especially when the bigger screens are coming in," noted Mr Lee of Audio House.

LG will be introducing a 65-inch Oled model in Singapore this year. It has also announced 77-inch and 99-inch models, although the company has not indicated if the models will be available in Singapore.

Indoor LED TVs are available up to 110 inches in size.

Aside from getting bigger, Oled TVs might also get thinner, and light enough to mount on a wall using magnets.

Earlier this year, LG showed a 55-inch prototype that is just 0.97mm thick, and could be attached to a magnetic mat fixed on a wall.

Tesla has given us a glimpse into the future, and it seems to involve somewhat creepy robotic arms that look like snakes. A newly-released video reveals the company's new charging prototype, which plugs itself in without an ounce of human assistance.

Apple spends almost $700,000 per year on security to protect Tim Cook, new accounts show.

The technology giant, which is worth a reported $700billion, confessed to paying the huge sum for 'home and personal security for Mr Cook because his personal safety [is] of the utmost importance.'

"The world," Benjamin Markovits says, "makes something of us and decides to a certain extent what we're like - and I've always hated that. The world isn't very good at making these decisions, and yet the older you get, the more decisions about you it makes. As a novelist, Markovits has always felt drawn to people "who don't feel perfectly represented by their place in life". Maybe, he adds, "because I was always an outsider".

Markovits, 42, is tall - 1.9m - and rangy, with gentle eyes, a high, domed forehead and a cadaverous expression. He talks in a quick-fire manner and attacks his cooked breakfast in the North London cafe where we meet as if he is refuelling.

He has run 8km that morning on Hampstead Heath - something he does four or five times a week.

The son of two law professors - an American Jewish father and a German Christian mother - Markovits was born in California, grew up "slightly oddball" in Texas, and spent time at schools in England and Germany. He is also a former professional basketball player - one of the few, perhaps, who would name John Betjeman as a favourite poet. He now lives in London with his English wife and two children. So where exactly, he wonders aloud, does he fit in?

"I never quite figured it out."

Fitting in is the central theme of Markovits's new novel - his seventh. You Don't Have To Live Like This tells the story of Greg Marnier - "Marny" to his friends - listless, directionless and in his early 30s, who has fallen from a promising future at Yale to a thankless teaching job in Aberystwyth, and is persuaded by an old classmate, Robert James, to join in a scheme to settle in and save a burnt-out neighbourhood in Detroit.

James is a dot-com millionaire, whose good looks and preppy outfits lend him the appearance of "the kind of guy a woman could trust to pay for their kids' private schooling", and whose ambitions are a hazy combination of altruism and self-advancement.

Joining a pioneering group of middle-class liberal idealists, left-wing counterculturists and Tea Party libertarians, all united in a vision of building a meaningful future, Marny moves into an abandoned home, takes a job as a supply teacher, begins a relationship with a black woman, Gloria - and buys himself a gun.

Markovits' interest in Detroit was piqued by newspaper articles on the city's decline and plummeting house prices. "You heard about houses selling for 300 bucks, and I had this idea that if you could get a bunch of friends to move there that would be an interesting thing to do. Then it struck me as not a bad idea to write about - probably better to write about it than to do it."

The Obama administration is moving to impose new energy efficiency regulations on vending machines.

The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy will propose stronger efficiency standards for beverage vending machines that serve sodas and other drinks, the agency said.

The vending machine standards were first issued in 2009, but the DOE is looking to strengthen those rules.

The efficiency rules would save energy and cut carbon pollution, but they would also cost millions for manufacturers to comply with.

Environmental activists are cheering the new rules.

"We might not think about them much unless we want a cold drink on a hot summer day like today,” said Elizabeth Noll, an advocates for the National Resources Defense Council.

The efficiency rules would cut energy consumption from vending machines by 39 percent, according to the agency, which could save consumers more than $1 billion. It would also reduce carbon pollution by the amount produced by 1 million homes in a year.

But the rules could cost businesses as much as $3.5 million in compliance costs.

The DOE is preparing to release the rules in the coming weeks.

The Environmental Protection Agency, the federal agency committed to protecting “human health and the environment,” jeopardized both Wednesday by accidentally releasing one million gallons of wastewater into Colorado’s Animas River.

EPA bureaucrats were using heavy machinery to nose around the Gold King Mine near Durango, Colorado, when they triggered the release of wastewater containing heavy metals like zinc, iron, and copper.

The Denver Post reported that residents of Durango “gathered along the Animas River to watch as the blue waters turned a thick, radiant orange and yellow just after 8 p.m., nearly 34 hours after the spill started.”

“The river looks pretty nasty,” Deputy Stephen Lowrance of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office told the Post. “It doesn’t look like water; it just looks like sludge.”

The EPA was reportedly investigating small leaks of toxic chemicals into the river near the mine when they triggered the million-gallon leak of toxic chemicals into the river.

THE US military says it has successfully tested an interceptor that can shoot down ballistic missiles as well as aeroplanes.

The destroyer USS John Paul Jones tested the technology during a series of flight tests off the Hawaiian island of Kauai over the past week, the Missile Defense Agency said in a statement.

The tests used a modified version of the SM-6 missile the Navy already uses, said Heather Uberuaga, a spokeswoman for military contractor Raytheon Missile Systems.

The existing version can shoot down aeroplanes, helicopters and cruise missiles. The newer model tested off Hawaii may also destroy ballistic missiles in their last few seconds of flight.

Raytheon says the updated missile is on course to be operational next year, offering the Navy the flexibility to meet a wide variety of missions.

It would join the Navy’s arsenal of missile-destroying interceptors. The Navy already has an interceptor, called SM-3, that ships can use to shoot down ballistic missiles midway through their flight.

Concerns are mounting over Apple's performance in the key U.S. and Chinese markets.
According to market researcher Strategy Analytics on Wednesday, Apple maintained the biggest market share of 32.1 percent in North America in the second half of this year, but that was down 12.1 percentage points from the fourth quarter of last year, when the iPhone 6 came out.
Samsung came second with 26.2 percent, followed by LG with 15 percent.
Samsung's market share rose 4.7 and percentage points and LG's four points.
Industry watchers blame a lack of new Apple products since the iPhone 6 and say the trend will continue until it rolls out a new product this September.

ISIS fanatics have executed 19 women for refusing to have sex with its fighters, a Kurdish official has said.

He claimed the women were being held hostage in Islamic State's stronghold of Mosul, Iraq, which the terror group seized in June last year.
