I just received a prescription from my local hospital which required government issued photo ID to pick a controlled substance. This is a 365 day a year photo ID requirement. (Imagine that you vote once every two to four years and as if by magic disenfranchisement becomes a legitimate issue).

The Affordable Care Act, e.g., government involvement in health care is not being questioned, nor have there been any issues with the photo ID requirement which states Government Issued ID....

The main point is that there is no problem with Photo ID for voting based on our experience with the Affordable Care Act, with Social Security, with EBT Cards, Medicaid or Medicare or the aforementioned Prescriptions for controlled substances. Somehow everyone from 1 - 100 years of age are getting their healthcare with out being disenfranchised and they are getting their social service program benefits as well.

So the next time voter ID becomes an issue this is a major way to push back.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but when I heard about Di-Natale's death, the first thing that popped into my mind was this:

Who killed him?

It isn't that far-fetched to suspect foul play when a journalist who covered controversial stories suddenly dies.

I can think of two notable examples immediately.

One is Andrew Breitbart, who, at age 43 (the same age as Di-Natale), collapsed and died on the street in front of his house on March 1, 2012 – just hours before he was set to release damning video footage that could have destroyed Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign.

And then there's the disturbing case of Michael Hastings, a journalist who died in a mysterious car crash on June 18, 2013. Hastings was preparing to publish a major investigative piece tied to the undercover agent who is suspected of sanitizing President Obama's passport records prior to the 2008 presidential election. He also was investigating abuses by the CIA and NSA.

Hastings also wrote a piece about Bowe Bergdahl. He was able to convince fellow soldiers to speak upon conditions of anonymity while disobeying the "gag orders" of their superiors. That piece was published in Rolling Stone on June 7, 2012. The FBI was investigating Hastings. He died just hours after sending out an email warning friends about the agency's investigation.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission on Thursday authorized the operation of a storage facility for low- and medium-level radioactive waste in Gyeongju, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The nation's first nuclear waste disposal facility will go into operation by the end of this year at the earliest, 28 years after Korea began to push for the construction of such a facility.

The operation of the permanent storage facility carries great significance, given that Seoul had to change its candidate site as many as nine times amid fierce protests by residents and anti-nuclear activists.

Construction of the disposal site, which can store 100,000 drums of low- and medium-level radioactive waste underground, was completed in June after seven years, but its operation has been delayed pending the nuclear inspection body's safety assessment. The facility, which was designed to resist an earthquake of up to magnitude 6.5, could store up to 800,000 drums of waste if its expansion plan proceeds on schedule.

The completion of such a disposal facility, which is not common even globally, will provide great leeway for the nation's nuclear power plants, which have wrestled with the near saturation of their temporary storage spaces.
The facility also deserves credit in that it will set a good example to the NIMBY (not in my back yard) syndrome entrenched across the nation, although there have been massive state subsidies and regional support programs.

South Korea is considering expanding its own air defense zone further south to possibly include a reef that falls in China’s newly declared control area over the East China Sea, Seoul officials said Thursday.

Seoul’s move came hours after China said it monitored a defiant flight by South Korea’s military through the Chinese Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) that was announced by Beijing last Saturday.

South Korea’s military conducted a surveillance flight through China’s new air control zone on Wednesday without informing the Chinese authorities, in a clear sign of defiance that Seoul will not recognize the new airspace claim that partly overlaps South Korea’s own zone and the South Korean-controlled submerged rock of Ieodo.

Asked about Wednesday’s flight by South Korean military, Qin Gang, China’s foreign ministry spokesman, replied, “In accordance with the announcement of ADIZ rules for the East China Sea, China identifies any aircraft within the ADIZ. So, China must note the relevant situation you mentioned.”

The reaction by China’s foreign ministry to South Korea’s flight was similar with its response on Wednesday to flights by two U.S. B-52 bombers through the Chinese air zone in that it appeared to be modest while being assertive.

Over the century that followed, the US has gone from being the biggest creditor in the world to its biggest debtor.

Decades of expanding government programs, waste, endless and costly wars, etc. have racked up such an enormous pile of debt that it has become almost impossible to pay it down.

A lot of folks don’t realize that, since the end of World War II, the US government’s total tax revenue has been almost constant at roughly 17% of GDP.

In other words, even though the actual tax rates themselves rise and fall, the government’s ‘slice’ of the economic pie is almost always the same - 17%.

I’ve worked out a mathematical model which shows that, even with absurd assumptions (7%+ GDP growth for years at a time, low interest rates, etc.), it is simply not feasible for the US government to ‘grow’ its way out.

Default has become the only option. And that could mean a number of things.

They could default on their creditors (other governments like China who loaned money to the US government). But this would spark a global financial and banking crisis.

They could default on the Federal Reserve, which owns trillions of dollars of US debt. But this would create an epic currency crisis for the US dollar.

They could also default on their obligations to their citizens—primarily to future beneficiaries of Social Security (who collectively own trillions of dollars of US debt).

Or they could choose to default on their obligations to every human being alive who holds US dollars… and engineer rampant inflation.

None of these is a good option. And simply put, the US government has reached a point of no return.

Korean Air chairman Cho Yang-ho made his first public apology over the so-called “nut rage” row on Friday, blaming himself for not properly educating his 40-year-old daughter.
“I sincerely apologize for the big troubles caused by my daughter’s foolish behavior. I’m asking forgiveness as Korean Air chairman and the father of Cho Hyun-ah,” he said in a news conference held at the company’s Seoul headquarters.

The Senate on Friday passed a sweeping $585 billion defense policy bill that will pay for the Pentagon's activities in fiscal 2015, and give President Obama authority to expand the campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The legislation passed 89-11, and now heads to Obama’s desk to be signed into law. 

The bill's road to passage was rocky after Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and others objected to language in it that designates 250,000 acres of new wilderness.

"Expanding the national park service is a disastrous idea," Coburn said. "And the reason it is disastrous is our parks are falling apart."….

….The bill provides $521.3 billion for the Pentagon's base budget, and $63.7 billion in funding for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In Washington’s coming budget battles, sacred cows like the tax deductions for home mortgage interest and charitable donations are likely to be on the table along with potential cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
But no one on Capitol Hill believes Wall Street’s beloved carried-interest tax loophole will be touched.
Don’t blame the newly elected Republican Congress.
Democrats didn’t repeal the loophole when they ran both houses of Congress from January 2009 to January 2011. And the reason they didn’t has a direct bearing on the future of the party.
First, let me explain why this loophole is the most flagrant of all giveaways to the super-rich.
Carried interest allows hedge-fund and private-equity managers, as well as many venture capitalists and partners in real estate investment trusts, to treat their take of the profits as capital gains ― taxed at maximum rate of 23.8 percent instead of the 39.6 percent maximum applied to ordinary income.
It’s a pure scam. They get the tax break even though they invest other people’s money rather than risk their own.
The loophole has no economic justification. As one private-equity manager told me recently, “I can’t defend it. No one can.”
It’s worth about $11 billion a year ― more than enough to extend unemployment benefits to every one of America’s nearly 3 million long-term unemployed.
The hedge-fund, private-equity and other fund managers who receive this $11 billion are some of the richest people in America. Forbes lists 46 billionaires who have derived most of their wealth from managing hedge funds. Mitt Romney used the carried-interest loophole to help limit his effective tax rate in 2011 to 13.9 percent.
So why didn’t Democrats close the loophole when they ran Congress?
Actually, in 2010, House Democrats finally squeaked through a tax plan that did close the carried-interest loophole, but the Democratically controlled Senate wouldn’t go along.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), one of those who argued against closing it, said the U.S. “shouldn’t do anything” to “make it easier for capital and ideas to flow to London or anywhere else.” As if Wall Street needed an $11 billion annual bribe to stay put.
To find the real reason Democrats didn’t close the loophole, follow the money. Wall Street is one of the Democratic Party’s biggest contributors.
The Street donated $49.1 million to Democrats in 2010, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Hedge-fund managers alone accounted for $5.88 million of the total. Schumer and a few other influential Democrats were among the industry’s major beneficiaries.

Cops are warning Mayor de Blasio and Council Speaker Melissa ​Mark-​Viverito to stay away from their funerals should they be ​killed in the line of duty.

The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association distributed a flier to members, blaring: “DON’T LET THEM INSULT YOUR SACRIFICE!” Cops were encouraged to sign and submit the “Don’t Insult My Sacrifice” waiver to ban the cop-bashing pols from their funerals.

“I, as a New York City police officer, request that Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito refrain from attending my funeral services in the event that I am killed in the line of duty,” the waiver states.

“Due to Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito’s consistent refusal to show police officers the support and respect they deserve, I believe that their attendance at the funeral of a fallen New York City police officer is an insult to that officer’s memory and sacrifice.”

Officers can download the form on the PBA’s Web site and drop off a signed copy to their PBA delegates.

The football star turned TV analyst has opened the Tebow CURE hospital in Davao City, Philippines. The five-story facility has received its official operating license and opened its doors this week. Physicians are already seeing children with critical orthopedic needs.
For Tebow, who was one of PEOPLE's Sexiest Men Alive this year, the hospital is the result of several years of planning and hard work. "We've been waiting a long time for it," he told PEOPLE in October. "I'm really excited that it's finally going to happen. We want to provide physical care, but we'll also provide spiritual and emotional care as well."
The hospital, built in partnership with CURE International, has 30 beds and three operating rooms. A team of 54 staffers has been hired to see patients.

"I was born in the Philippines while my parents served as missionaries, and I have always had great love and passion for the Filipino people," says Tebow, 27. "It is so exciting to be able to provide healing and care for these incredibly deserving children halfway around the world.
The hospital is one facet of the Tim Tebow Foundation. The Florida-based organization also includes "Timmy's Playrooms" in children's hospitals, the W15H program, and Orphan Care, a program that provides grants to families adopting children with special needs.

The Pentagon is considering the re-deployment of nuclear cruise missiles in Europe in response to a new Russian cruise missile that the United States has charged violates a 1987 nuclear treaty, a senior Pentagon official told Congress on Wednesday.

Brian P. McKeon, deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, said U.S. cruise missile deployments are among a range of options being considered if Russian fails to return to compliance with the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

McKeon did not provide details of the military options being studied but said they ranged from “reactive defense, to counterforce, to counter value defense measures.”

“We don’t have ground-launched cruise missiles in Europe now obviously because they’re prohibited by the treaty,” McKeon said. “But that would obviously be one option to explore.”

The testimony came during a joint hearing on Russian treaty violations. The hearing brought together members of the House Armed Services subcommittee on strategic forces, and the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on terrorism, nonproliferation and trade.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that calls for greater missile defense cooperation with South Korea and Japan against threats from North Korea.
The legislation, H.R.3979, calls for the secretary of defense to conduct an assessment to identify opportunities for increasing missile defense cooperation with the two allies and evaluate options for enhanced short-range missile, rocket, and artillery defense capabilities to address threats from the Korean Peninsula.
The bill passed the House on Thursday last week and awaits approval from the Senate.
"It is the sense of Congress that increased cooperation on missile defense among the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea would enhance the security of allies of the United States in Northeast Asia, increase the defense of forward-based forces of the United States, and enhance the protection of the United States with regard to threats from the Korean Peninsula," the legislation said.

Korean Air Vice President Heather Cho resigned from all flight services-related posts Tuesday, bowing to the public uproar over her anger inflicted on a flight crewmember for not serving macadamia nuts in a "proper" fashion.
"I sincerely apologize for unintentionally causing public concern. I seek forgiveness from all those who have been hurt. I will take full responsibility for the incident and step down from my post," she said in a statement.
However, Cho will retain her positions as vice president and board member of the airline.
Her resignation came hours after her father Cho Yang-ho, chairman of Hanjin Group, the parent group of the nation's largest airline, apologized for the inconvenience caused by his eldest daughter's spat with the crewmember on a plane bound for Seoul from New York.
"I sincerely apologize for causing any inconvenience to the passengers," the 65-year-old chairman told reporters, on his return from a trip to France.
He also promised to investigate the incident and take all necessary measures.
Korean Air said the chairman held a meeting with top executives at Incheon International Airport, right after he returned from the overseas trip, and accepted his daughter's resignation.

The Opec oil cartel no longer exists in any meaningful sense and crude prices will slump to $50 a barrel over coming months as market forces shake out the weakest producers, Bank of America has warned.

Revolutionary changes sweeping the world’s energy industry will drive down the price of liquefied natural gas (LNG), creating a “multi-year” glut and a mucher cheaper source of gas for Europe.

Francisco Blanch, the bank’s commodity chief, said Opec is “effectively dissolved” after it failed to stabilize prices at its last meeting. “The consequences are profound and long-lasting,“ he said.

The bank said in its year-end report that at least 15pc of US shale producers are losing money at current prices, and more than half will be under water if US crude falls below $55. A grisly killing in a small town in Mississippi has local residents on edge and looking for answers.

A blond-haired teenager with no known enemies was found walking down a rural road on fire Saturday night. She had been beaten, doused with lighter-fluid and set ablaze.

Jessica Chambers, 19, of Panola County was found engulfed in flames near the charred shell of her car sitting on the roadside in the town of Courtland. The town has a population of 460.

She was flown to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, but later died. Preliminary autopsy results reveal Jessica died of severe burns to 98 percent of her body, according to a report by Fox affiliate WAFF of Huntsville, Alabama.

“They have ripped everything I have,” Lisa Chambers, Jessica’s mother, told WAFF. “She left to go clean out her car and was going to get her something to eat.”

Jessica never made it home.

Her father, Ben Allen Chambers Sr., said investigators told him his daughter whispered something to first responders before going unconscious. He and others believe Jessica told them who her attackers were.

“When the fire department got there, she was walking down the road on fire,” he said in WAFF’s report. “Only part of her body that wasn’t burned was the bottom of her feet.”

Fighting back tears, the father then described how his daughter’s attackers knocked her out, and squirted lighter fluid down her throat and in her nose.

“She had a big gash on top of her head,” he said. “She told them, she told them, told him who done it.”

Congressional leaders on Tuesday evening reached a deal on a nearly $1.1 trillion spending package to keep the government funded.  

Dubbed the “cromnibus,” the package is expected to encompass 11 appropriations bills that cover most of the government for the rest of fiscal 2015 and one continuing resolution that funds the Department of Homeland Security through February.
The bill was posted after 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Passage of the bill would avert a shutdown, which appeared to be a possibility last month when conservatives demanded action to block President Obama’s executive orders on immigration.

The delayed release of the funding bill will push the lame-duck schedule back, with lawmakers itching to wrap up work for the year and return home for the holidays.

Both chambers of Congress are now expected to vote on a stopgap bill to fund the government for two or three days to buy time for the Senate to consider the larger package.

Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings tore into MIT professor and Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber on Tuesday for his remarks on American voters and the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee made GOP chairman Darrell Issa’s opening statement sound tame by comparison.

“As far as I can tell, we are here today to beat up on Jonathan Gruber for stupid — I mean absolutely stupid — comments he made over the last few years,” he began, staring angrily at the hapless professor.

“Let me be clear, I am extremely frustrated with Dr. Gruber’s statements,” Cummings continued. “They were irresponsibly, incredibly disrespectful, and did not reflect reality. And they were indeed insulting.”

“I was in Congress when this law was debated, and Dr. Gruber does not speak for me, or the chairman of the other committees who worked tirelessly on this bill,” he said. “We debated this legislation for nearly a year before it was finally passed and signed by the president! Never once did I believe or did anyone suggest that we were somehow hiding our goals from the American people.”

The United States will keep up to 1,000 more soldiers than previously planned in Afghanistan into next year, outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Saturday, in a recognition of the still formidable challenge from Taliban insurgents.

Hagel, confirming a change in the U.S. drawdown schedule first reported by Reuters in November, said the additional forces were needed because delays in signing security pacts had impacted plans to raise troops from other countries.

However, he also said that a particularly violent surge of Taliban attacks in Kabul in the last two weeks was a reminder of the continued need for a foreign presence.

"The recent wave of Taliban attacks has made it clear that the international community must not waver in its support for a stable, secure and prosperous Afghanistan," said Hagel, who arrived in Kabul unannounced on Saturday morning.

The NATO-led combat mission in Afghanistan officially ends in two weeks with a sharp reduction in western forces, but troops that stay behind will still provide "combat enabler" support to Afghan soldiers, Hagel said.

The United States will also maintain a mission to fight al Qaeda in the country, he added.

South Korea's military has detected no signs of underground tunnels allegedly dug by North Korea in two areas near Seoul, officials said Friday, vowing stern action against those who make false claims.
Several conservative civic groups have claimed that they have found 12 underground tunnels -- six in the northern city of Yangju and another six in nearby Namyangju -- dug by the North to infiltrate the South.
"In order to dissipate suspicions, the military scoured the areas for four days from Monday, mobilizing more than 100 military and civilian personnel as well as 26 units of equipment," the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a press release.
"We drilled a dozen holes in the suspicious regions and carried out diverse analyses, including sound waves and the composition of rocks. But not a single sign has been found to indicate that such underground tunnels exist," it said.
Criticizing the civic groups for their refusal to accept the military's explanation, the JCS vowed to take strong legal action against false claims.
"Making groundless allegations repeatedly not only results in a waste of the military budget but causes security jitters among the people," the JCS said. "We will take strong legal action against the civic groups."
Later Friday, the JCS is scheduled to hold a media briefing about their findings at the sites.
Between 1974 and 1990, South Korea discovered four secret tunnels believed to have been dug by North Korea to launch surprise attacks on Seoul. No tunnels have been found since 1990.

THIS one’s for real. Forget the faces and the pyramids: An odd ‘boil’ on the face of Mars has scientists scrambling for an explanation.

The weird circular blemish, some 2km in diameter, recently appeared in an image beamed back from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

It leaps out at the camera in an area otherwise unusually smooth for the Red planet.

And that in itself could be a clue.

“It looks like a circular island surrounded by a “sea” of smooth-looking lava flows,” a NASA statement on the Athabascan ‘enigma’ reads.

The House on Tuesday passed a bill that would end Social Security Benefits for Nazis, which a loophole in the current law allowed.

Senate and House leaders introduced the bill last month, and it gained bipartisan support.

The bill is expected to pass the Senate and reach the president’s desk before the end of the year.

“It’s outrageous that Nazi war criminals and anyone who participated in Nazi persecution atrocities continue to collect Social Security benefits while living abroad. As everyone agrees: this must stop,” said Sen. Greenpeace International claimed Wednesday that a defective nickel-based alloy has been in use in core parts of South Korean nuclear power plants, exposing the country to the risk of massive leaks of radioactive water from the plants.

"Inconel-600" is currently in use at 14 local nuclear reactors throughout the United States, but various other countries stopped using it four decades ago due to the material's serious problem with durability.

Manufactured by an American company, the nickel-chromium alloy had been used worldwide for building key parts of nuclear power plants such as steam generators and nuclear reactors that require resistance to corrosion and high temperatures.
The environmental group, during a news conference in Seoul, said any corrosion or cracking of the nuclear reactors made of the alloy could cause massive leaks of radioactive materials at any time, similar to those that occurred in the Fukushima or Chernobyl disasters.

Noting that six of the 14 nuclear reactors in South Korea were already found to have cracking, with problems at Hanbit reactors No. 3 and No. 4 the most serious, the group urged the Seoul government to immediately stop the operation of the two reactors and of other reactors in turn.

It also urged the Korea Water Resources Corp., a state-run company that operates the nation's atomic power plants, to launch a full-scale inspection into the use of the alloy at nuclear power plants in the country. (Yonhap)
