Until recently, I was a loyal Apple customer, with two MacBooks and an iPhone 5. But I recently moved from New York to London, and that meant I needed a new phone number. But my iPhone was locked, preventing that from happening.

So I decided to get a new phone. I really wanted a big, 5.7-inch iPhone 6, but that won't be out until September at the very earliest, and maybe not until next year.

So I got a Samsung Galaxy S5, one of the big-screen "phablet" phones with a 5.1-inch screen that is driving the smartphone category right now.

And I am blown away.

I had no idea what I've been missing.

Using a large-format Samsung Android is leagues ahead of the iPhone experience, especially for video and photos. The big screen makes a huge difference.

When I went back to my old iPhone I was struck by how bizarrely small it is. It was like looking at one of my old flip-phones from the early 2000s. I just couldn't understand why I had tolerated it for so long.

The Galaxy handles texts and email better than the iPhone, too. My main demands on a phone are email, messaging, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, photos, web media, and video. The big screen format really makes all of these pop in a way that they just don't on the iPhone. This will sound like the zealotry of the newly converted, but iPhone users do not realize quite how bad even basic web media like YouTube or Vimeo are on an iPhone until you see them on a Galaxy.

It’s a shrewd gambit: The charge is plausible because the GOP establishment has desperately pushed amnesty for years; even better, the charge involves a complex 2008 law, so it is difficult to unwind. In reality, this 2008 measure, known as the “William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Act,” was a Democratic amendment, added by Senator Dianne Feinstein and then-Senator (and Vice President-elect) Joe Biden to the seemingly uncontroversial reauthorization of a Clinton-era anti-human-trafficking law. The United Nations Human Rights Council has provided North Korea with 2-hundred-68 recommendations to improve its dire human rights conditions.
They came in a report adopted on Tuesday in Geneva during the council's Universal Periodic Review session on North Korea.
The extensive report urges Pyongyang to close its notorious prison camps and end public executions.

It also calls on the North Korean regime to stop its systematic and widespread human rights violations, which include forced labor.
North Korea immediately dismissed substantial portions of the report, rejecting 83 of the recommendations outright.
The rejected recommendations include closing down any political prison camps, eradicating state-sponsored discrimination based on the political backgrounds of families, and cooperating with the International Criminal Court.
North Korea’s UN ambassador So Se-pyong said, the recommendations came out of the international community's misunderstanding and prejudices against the regime.

Regarding the remaining 185 recommendations, North Korea said it would review them and respond before the council's regular session scheduled for September, during which time the full report will be made public.
The council's Universal Periodic Review is held for two-week periods, three times a year.
During each session, 14 countries undergo reviews.
Pyongyang took the opportunity to lash out at the United States.
The North's state media said the U.S. is the worst country in terms of human rights infringement.
It called the United States a "living hell," full of rampant racial discrimination and gun accidents, where only a select few get to enjoy material success.

This is North Korea's largest political prison, Camp 16, shown in a satellite image taken on May 25th.
Located in Whaseong-gun, Hamkyungbuk-do, the camp is about 560 square kilometers -- equivalent to half the size of the capital of Pyongyang.
The images, released as part of a report released Wednesday by Amnesty International, show new housing blocks have been added to the site, when compared with images taken of the camp two years ago.
The human rights group estimates that the number of inmates at the camp has increased slightly from the previously estimated number of 20-thousand two years ago.

The report also includes testimony from a North Korean defector surnamed Lee who worked as a guard at Camp 16 from the 1980s to the mid-1990s.
Lee said that detainees were forced to dig their own graves and were then killed with hammer blows to their necks.

The former guard said he also witnessed prison officials strangling detainees and then beating them to death with wooden sticks.
He said the officials also frequently raped the female inmates before killing them.
Amnesty International has called on North Korea to close the camps immediately and urged countries like China to stop repatriating North Koreans who flee the country on the grounds that they will likely be sent to the gulag.

In November of 2008, the black unemployment rate was 11.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – but blacks, along with unwitting Americans at large, were still riding the high of having elected our first black president. Within a year and a half, however, black unemployment rose to 16.5 percent and hasn’t moved too far in either direction since.

A 19-year-old American citizen who has been confirmed killed aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was remembered by his grieving relatives and friends today as a kind young man with a great sense of humor.

Quinn Lucas Schansman, 19, a dual U.S. and Dutch citizen, was on his way to meet family members who were vacationing in Malaysia when his plane was hit by a Russian-made surface-to-air missile.

Quinn was born in Fort Lee, New Jersey, but spent most of his short life in the Netherlands. he also had family in Georgia.

His father, father, Thomas worked in San Mateo, California and New York City as an account executive for the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, a Dutch government bureau that helps foreign companies get established in Holland.

A U.K. government commissioned study found that people who claim to be concerned with global warming actually use more electricity than those who do not.

The Telegraph reported:

Those who say they are concerned about the prospect of climate change consume more energy than those who say it is “too far into the future to worry about,” the study commissioned by the Department for Energy and Climate Change found.

That is in part due to age, as people over 65 are more frugal with electricity but much less concerned about global warming.

However, even when pensioners are discounted, there is only a “weak trend” to show that people who profess to care about climate change do much to cut their energy use.

The researchers wrote: “Taken all together, householders who strongly agreed they were not worried about climate change because it was too far in the future in fact used less electricity rather than more, counter to the hypothesis that households concerned about climate change use less electricity.

The study was based on the Household Electricity Survey, which documents the electricity use of 250 families during a one-year period.

Glenn Beck said Friday that “nobody” in the media is covering Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) decision to join Mercury One’s border relief effort because the media is already starting to play “presidential games.”

Mercury One, the charity Glenn Beck founded, will be in McAllen, Texas, on Saturday, passing out roughly $2 million in food, water, clothing and toys to illegal immigrant children. Beck and a number of volunteers will be there to help.

But as Beck said, while many news outlets, including MSNBC, have reported on the relief effort, few have said anything about Cruz’s involvement.

“Why is nobody covering this?” Beck asked on his radio program Friday. “This came out yesterday. This is a big deal. Why is no one covering that Ted Cruz is going down to the border for a relief program?”

A Stamford High School teacher accused of threatening to fail an 18-year-old student if he did not have sex with her and providing him and a friend with marijuana, turned herself over to police early Thursday.

Danielle Watkins, 32, of Fort Point St., Norwalk, was charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sale of marijuana and one count of risk of injury to a minor, according to a statement released by police Thursday morning.

Watkins posted $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on July 31.

Police launched an investigation into the allegations on June 26 after the 18-year-old student appeared at police headquarters and provided a statement about the inappropriate relationship. The victim allegedly told police he had numerous sexual encounters with Watkins, his English teacher, from the start of the school year in September 2013 to the end in June. He told police the encounters occurred in her car during school hours, but not on school grounds

Lawmakers were quick to praise Senate appropriators’ $550 billion defense spending bill, which rejected many proposed Pentagon cost-cutting measures and protected programs in their home districts.
The measure, which includes $489.6 billion for the Pentagon’s base budget and $59.7 billion for war operations, funds many controversial programs that the Obama administration had sought to scale back.
But many lawmakers said the budget measure would help boost job growth and spending in military communities at home.
“The defense appropriations bill we advanced will both support our service men and women while making targeted investments in New Hampshire jobs and our national defense,” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) said in a statement Friday. 
She cited the bill’s funding for New Hampshire’s National Guard program, the development of the KC-46A tanker and Virginia-class submarines. 
“The continued investment in the KC-46A tanker as well as the procurement of two Virginia-class submarines are of particular importance for local jobs and our national security, and I hope the full Senate can pass this bipartisan legislation quickly,” she added.
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said he was “very pleased” with the committee’s $1.51 billion funding for the Littoral Combat Ship program, another controversial program plagued by performance and cost issues.
“This is a great ship and a key part of the Navy’s future. I have advocated for it for many years. We must keep it on-track,” he said. 
He also praised funding for the Joint High Speed Vessel program, which is being built by Austal, a company with a shipyard in Alabama. 
“I am very pleased that Senator Shelby and his Appropriations Committee colleagues have kept these programs funded and on-track in these difficult financial times,” Sessions said. 
Virginia Sens. Mark Warner (D) and Tim Kaine (D) also praised the bill for including funding for “top defense priorities for Virginia."
“This is a real win for Virginia, our service men and women, military veterans and their families,” Warner said.
“I’m particularly proud of the way Virginia’s bipartisan congressional delegation in the House and Senate worked together to ensure our defense priorities are funded.” 
The bill includes $848 million to refuel and overhaul the Norfolk-based carrier USS George Washington, which the Pentagon had sought to deactivate, and $853 million for development of the Ohio class submarine replacement program, partially constructed in Newport News, Va.

A federal judge has allowed a lawsuit by 10 tea party groups to move forward against the Internal Revenue Service, rejecting a request by the federal government to dismiss all the allegations that the agency subjected conservative groups to additional, often burdensome scrutiny.

In her ruling Thursday, Judge Susan Dlott allowed two of the tea party groups' claims — including that the IRS discriminated and retaliated against them based on their views in violation of their free speech rights — to survive to trial.

The Cincinnati-based Dlott did dismiss a third claim, ruling the tea party groups could not pursue allegations of privacy violations on behalf of their individual members. The individuals themselves have to do that, she said.

Edward Greim, the lead attorney for the tea party groups, said Friday he is pleased the case will move forward.

"If the government is right in this case, it means that from now on, no matter who the president is, the IRS can pick out a group of people that disagrees with the president and pull those people out, delay them, harass them, target them, and there's nothing anyone can do about it," Greim said. "And our position is very simple: That cannot be true and that's not the republic that we live in."

Greim said he was planning on appealing a portion of Dlott's ruling that won't allow the tea party groups to seek damages from individual IRS employees, though those employees are still named defendants.

President Obama on Friday ruled out a military response to the shoot down of a Malaysian airliner over eastern Ukraine while charging that Russian President Vladimir Putin was partially responsible for the tragedy that killed 298.

"He (Putin) has the most control over that situation, and so far, at least, he has not exercised it," Obama said at the White House on Friday.

Obama said that U.S. troops would not become involved and the U.S. would rely on sanctions against Russia to bring about a ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the standoff with separatists in eastern Ukraine.

"We don't see a U.S. military role beyond what we've already been doing in working with our NATO partners and some of the Baltic States, giving them reassurances that we are prepared to do whatever is required to meet our alliance obligations," Obama said.

Obama called the shoot down of Malaysian Flight MH-17 "an outrage of unspeakable proportions." He said that at least one American was among the dead and identified him as Quinn Lucas Schansman, who also held Dutch citizenship.

"Evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile that was launched from an area that is controlled by Russian-backed separatists inside of Ukraine," Obama said.

At a later Pentagon briefing, Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said the missile was likely a Russian-made, surface-to-air missile called the Buk system in Russia and the SA-11 Gadfly by NATO.

The SA-11 "is one which we believe was used," Kirby said. "It would strain credulity to say they (the separatists) could do this without some level of Russian assistance."

THE ARMY NEW UNIFORM WILL BE SIMILAR TO MULTICAM

The U.S. Army has altered its government-owned Scorpion camouflage pattern to look almost identical to MultiCam, the trademarked pattern the service has been using in Afghanistan since 2010.

Earlier this spring, Army leaders began briefing senior sergeants major around the service that the Universal Camouflage Pattern will be replaced with Scorpion, a pattern similar to MultiCam that was developed around 2002 for the Objective Force Warrior program.

The Army has spent the past five years immersed in testing as part of its camouflage improvement effort to replace the UCP, a pixilated pattern that has proven to be inferior when compared to other patterns.

Army officials wanted to replace UCP with Crye Precision's MultiCam -- a pattern that has demonstrated consistent performance in multiple tests and was selected in 2010 as the Operational Camouflage Pattern, or OCP, for soldiers to wear in Afghanistan. But problems emerged with price negotiations and the Army decided to go with Scorpion, which was actually designed by Crye Precision under a government contract.

The company's owner, Caleb Crye, then improved the pattern, making it more effective and trademarked it as MultiCam.

So since the selection of Scorpion, Army camouflage experts have also decided to improve Scorpion.

More than 80% of California is now in an extreme drought, according to new data by the National Weather Service.

The NWS' Drought Monitor Update for July 15 shows 81% of California in the category of extreme drought or worse, up from 78%. Three months ago, it was 68%.

The map shows that drought conditions worsened in parts of Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

The new data comes as officials are getting tough on water wasters.

Saying that it was time to increase conservation in the midst of one of the worst droughts in decades, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted drought regulations that give local agencies the authority to fine those who waste water up to $500 a day.

Many Southern California cities, including Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Long Beach, already have mandatory restrictions in place.

Updated results of a state board survey show that statewide, urban water use in May increased 1% compared to the May average of the previous three years.

That rise was mostly driven by an 8% jump in coastal Southern California.

In most other hydrologic regions, May use declined. The biggest drop was in the Sacramento River area, where it fell 13%.

Nearly 120 wind turbines catch fire each year – ten times the number reported by the industry – according to new research. The figures show that fires are the second biggest cause of accidents in wind turbines, after blade failure.

According to the Telegraph, Engineers at Imperial College London and the University of Edinburgh found that out of the 200,000 wind turbines across the world, an average of 117 burst into flames each year, many more than the 12 reported by wind farm firms.

The researchers added that as each turbine costs more than £2 million and can generate around £500,000 per year, any down time could make the industry less viable. Also, because the turbines are so far off the ground, it is almost impossible to put the fires out, leading to the whole structure potentially being destroyed.

Dr Guillermo Rein of Imperial College said: “Fires are a problem for the industry, impacting on energy production, economic output and emitting toxic fumes.

“This could cast a shadow over the industry’s green credentials.

“Worryingly our report shows that fire may be a bigger problem than what is currently reported. Our research outlines a number of strategies that can be adopted by the industry to make these turbines safer and more fire resistant in the future.”

The turbines catch fire because they contain flammable materials such as hydraulic oil, which are in close proximity to wires and machinery. High winds can add extra oxygen, making it even easier to catch fire if they are faulty or overheat.

The report also added that these fires can be hazardous for the surrounding area: “Under high wind conditions, burning debris from the turbine may fall on nearby vegetation and start forest fires or cause serious damage to property.”

Fires can also start as a result of lightning strikes, with turbines being especially prone as they are metallic and often the tallest structures for miles around.

With medical professionals overwhelmed by border chaos, illegal aliens are being sent across the U.S. without basic health screening, raising the prospect of epidemics of diseases once thought eradicated.

As unaccompanied minors from Central America who have flooded across President Obama's open borders are dispersed nationwide from Nebraska to Illinois to Massachusetts, concerns have arisen that the nation's health has been put at risk by poor and even absent medical screening.

An internal Department of Defense memo obtained by ABC News reports that the director of refugee health at Health and Human Services "has identified a breakdown of the medical screening processes at the Nogales, Ariz., facility." This may be just the tip of a medical-disaster iceberg.

Officials involved in moving the immigrants from Border Patrol processing centers to Health and Human Services facilities are, according to the memo, "putting sick (fevers and coughing) unaccompanied children on airplanes inbound for (Naval Base Ventura County) in addition to the chicken pox and coxsackie virus cases."

Three unaccompanied minors were reportedly in the ICU at local hospitals in California, and two of them were diagnosed with strep pneumonia. The same naval base has experienced an outbreak of pneumonia and influenza among the unaccompanied minors at its detention facility.

The dispersal of illegal aliens, including unaccompanied minors, throughout the U.S. without proper medical screening is an appalling dereliction of duty by a president and an administration sworn to protect the health and safety of American citizens.

"Most of the border minors are being kept in overcrowded facilities ridden with poor hygiene," Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, a preventive medicine specialist, told Breitbart News recently, adding, "This is the ideal condition for a viral outbreak."

"A public health crisis, the likes of which I have not seen in my lifetime, is looming," Vliet wrote recently for World Net Daily. "Drug-resistant tuberculosis is the most serious risk, but even diseases like measles can cause severe complications and death in older or immuno-compromised patients."

Border Patrol agents in Murrieta, Calif., have tested positive for tuberculosis. Hand and foot disease and Chagas disease, a tropical parasitic illness, both previously eradicated from the area, are on the rise.

The possibility also exists in these conditions for diseases such as dengue fever to hit the U.S.

"We had one get bacterial pneumonia a couple days ago," Border Patrol union vice president Chris Cabrera told host Martha MacCallum on Fox News Channel's America's Newsroom Monday. "A lot of our guys are coming down with scabies or lice."

If the plane was shot down, it would be the fourth commercial airliner to face such a fate. The previous three were:

In a statement released Thursday, Microsoft says about 12,500 of the professional and factory positions will be cut as part of its $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's handset business.

"My promise to you is that we will go through this process in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible," said Nadella in a memo to employees.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that under a bilateral security arrangement, U.S. Forces Japan is required to secure Tokyo’s understanding should it want to send its marines to the Korean Peninsula in the event of contingencies here.
His remarks at a parliamentary session on Tuesday triggered concerns in Korea that Tokyo’s political calculations could impede the rapid deployment of U.S. troops to the country if conflict occurs on the peninsula.
“U.S. marines depart from Japan. As (that) is an issue that requires prior consultation (between the U.S. and Japan), (the marines) cannot rush to the defense of South Korea without Japan’s understanding,” Abe was quoted as saying by Kyodo News.
A senior Seoul official said that the U.S. military augmentation in the event of peninsular contingencies would proceed as planned under the bilateral security treaty and joint operational plans.
“Augmented U.S. forces will be deployed to the peninsula as planned in the bilateral security arrangements between Seoul and Washington,” said the official, declining to be named.
“But it is inappropriate for the Seoul government to talk about the U.S.-Japan agreement about using the facilities of U.S. Forces Japan (in the event of peninsular contingencies).”
Abe’s remarks at parliament came as concerns in South Korea have risen over Japan’s recent adoption of the reinterpretation of the war-renouncing Article 9 of its constitution to allow for collective self-defense, or the use of force to aid allies under attack.
During the parliamentary session, Abe said, “I want to help (South Korea) clearly understand the scope (of Japan’s exercise of the right to collective self-defense) is extremely limited. There needs to be close cooperation among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.”
Asked if Japan would use its right to collective self-defense in the case of territorial confrontations in the South China Sea between China and any of the Southeast Asian countries, Abe did not rule out the possibility.
“We will make a comprehensive judgment on a case-by-case basis in line with our three conditions enabling the use of force,” he said.
Japan has set three preconditions for the use of force: when a country with close ties to Japan is attacked; when the attack threatens Japan’s security; and when there is a clear concern that the attack could threaten Japanese people’s lives, freedom and right to pursue happiness.

The system’s high rate of success does carry risks of the public becoming complacent about the threat of rocket attacks, Gold acknowledged. Civilians need to continue to meticulously seek shelter in protected areas whenever sirens sound, because despite Iron Dome’s very high success rate, “it’s not 100 percent,” he said. Additionally, dangerous debris from intercepted rockets could fall from the sky.

Israel’s political and military leadership, on the other hand, is unlikely to be swept away in a wave of unwarranted smugness, Gold suggested. They know that to keep Israelis safe they need to combine deterrence and prevention of weapons from being smuggled to Hamas and Hezbollah with massive intelligence work, he said. “These are layers that support each other. I don’t think we’ll see a future in which people will sit at home and do nothing during an attack, and the Iron Dome will do everything.”

Proponents of the Keystone XL pipeline are working to keep the project in the public eye, even as it becomes clear it will not be green-lighted until after the elections.

The Nebraska Supreme Court announced this week that it would hear oral arguments in a lawsuit about Keystone’s route through the state in early September.

Because the State Department decided in April to suspend its review while the pipeline’s route through Nebraska is litigated, this means a final decision is unlikely until after the midterms.

And that’s setting up a challenge for the project’s supporters, who want to keep the pressure on leaders to approve Keystone.

“There are a lot of other things happening right now — Export-Import Bank, immigration, tax reform, all kinds of stuff — and we don’t want Keystone to get lost in this whole thing,” said Chip Yost, the assistant vice president for energy at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).

“We want people and the president to know that this is still a priority for manufacturers and businesses,” Yost said.

NAM joined 43 business groups this week in sending a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry urging him to immediately recommend that President Obama approve the pipeline, instead of waiting for the Nebraska case.

“The purpose of that letter is to keep this at the forefront, not to let it die away,” Yost said.

Keystone supporters are also commissioning surveys, backing legislation and speaking publicly about it.

If it is completed, Keystone XL would bring oil from Alberta, Canada’s oil sands through the middle of the United States to the Gulf Coast, where the oil would be refined.

Environmental groups oppose it due to the greenhouse gas emissions the oil will produce, but business groups say it will adequately protect the environment and create thousands of jobs.

The pipeline needs a presidential permit because its northern section will cross the border into Canada.

The project’s proponents maintain that Obama can approve the pipeline’s construction regardless of Nebraska.

“The Nebraska stuff is going to work itself out in the courts or with some kind of agreement, but that’s no reason to hold up the entire thing,” Yost said. “That’s a bit of a red herring.”

The American Petroleum Institute (API) also wants to ensure that public attention remains on Keystone during the summer and fall.

“Keystone’s a priority for API and the industry. We continue to advocate for it, and we continue to want people to talk about it,” said Sabrina Fang, a spokeswoman for API.

Fang agreed that since State has issued an environmental analysis, the president can issue his permit at any point, regardless of the Nebraska case.

“But for whatever reason — and many people think it’s for political reasons — the president is once again kicking the can down the road past another election cycle,” Fang said.

First lady Michelle Obama grabbed the political reins during a speech to the League of United Latin American Citizens in New York City, telling the crowd of admirers not to worry — that her husband wouldn’t wait on Congress to take action on immigration reform.

“So make no mistake about it — we have to keep on fighting as hard as we can on immigration,” Mrs. Obama said, to a cheering crowd, Breitbart reported. “And as my husband has said, he’s going to do whatever administrative action it takes to fix this broken system.”

Mrs. Obama then vowed that Congress wouldn’t get in the way of her presidential husband’s hopes for immigration change.

“We cannot afford to wait on Congress to lift up our next generation,” she said, Breitbart reported. “We can’t afford to wait on anybody when it comes to our kids’ future. Your grandparents and parents didn’t wait for opportunities to come to them. No, they packed up their families and moved to this country for a better life.”

U.S. authorities have charged a Chinese businessman with hacking into the computer systems of U.S. companies with large defense contracts, including Boeing, to steal data on military projects, including some of its latest fighter jets, officials said Friday.
Suspect Su Bin worked with two unnamed Chinese hackers to get the data between 2009 and 2013, and Su attempted to sell some of the information to state-owned Chinese companies, prosecutors said.
The three hackers targeted fighter jets such as the F-22 and the F-35 as well as Boeing‘s C-17 military cargo aircraft program, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles that was unsealed Thursday.
An attorney for Su could not be reached for comment.
Su was arrested in Canada on June 28 and remains in custody there, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller in Los Angeles. He has a bail hearing set for July 18……

……The New York Times reported Wednesday that Chinese hackers broke into the computer networks of the Office of Personnel Management earlier this year with the intention of accessing the files of tens of thousands of federal employees who had applied for top-secret security clearances. Senior U.S. officials say the hackers gained access to some of the agency’s databases in March before the threat was detected and blocked.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Thursday that both the federal personnel office and the Department of Homeland Security took steps to mitigate any risk as soon as they learned about the possible intrusion.
