Amid contrived outrage over Benghazi and the improving fortunes of its healthcare reform, the Obama administration could be facing a genuine scandal about its treatment of military veterans that has the potential to attract broad political condemnation of its competence.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is facing mounting evidence that some of the hospitals it runs have been keeping two sets of books to make it look as if they were reducing waiting times to see a doctor.

More damning, the department is investigating the claims of a whistleblower doctor in Arizona that dozens of patients at one hospital died while they were languishing on a hidden waiting list without ever being given an appointment.

Richard Griffin, the department’s acting inspector general, admitted on Thursday that its review could lead to criminal charges. In the first political casualty of the scandal, Robert Petzel, the department’s undersecretary for heath, resigned on Friday.

If the evidence of mismanagement continues to accumulate, the Obama administration will find itself not in another partisan knife-fight, but under fire from both parties in a Congress where the uniformed military is venerated.

The veterans’ healthcare scandal is, in part, one of the unintended consequences of the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq, which have created “our 9/11 generation who have served with honour in more than a decade of war,” as President Barack Obama described them on Thursday.

A multilateral discussion is needed to deal with China’s reclamation project at the Mabini Reef in the West Philippine Sea, Malacanang said March 14.

The Department of National Defense has confirmed that China is carrying out “reclamation or earthmoving activities” at the Mabini Reef, also known as the Johnson Reef.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said during a press briefing that Vietnam also has a claim on the reef, hence the need for a multilateral discussion rather than a bilateral dialogue.

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) won't appear on the Democratic primary ballot after failing to submit enough valid signatures, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett said on Tuesday.

"It is my determination that in accordance with the current laws and statutes of the State of Michigan, the nominating petitions filed by Congressman John Conyers, Jr. are insufficient to allow his name to appear on the August 5, 2014 Primary Ballot," Garrett said in a statement. 

The decision means Conyers may have to run as a write-in candidate if he wants to keep a seat he's held for five decades.

If Conyers wins reelection, the 84 year old civil rights leader and House Judiciary Committee ranking member would become the Dean of the House, having served longer than any other current member. His former boss, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), is retiring this year.

Conyers submitted 2,000 signatures, needing 1,000 valid ones. After the challenges, he had 592.

That’s equal to the cost of roughly 2.7 million first-trimester abortions – more than twice the number of abortions that occur in an entire year in the United States. Unlike Gosnell, however, everything Buffett has done has been entirely legal. But Buffett does share something else in common with the abortionist. Both their stories have been largely unreported.

Buffett’s own charity, The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, is named after his first wife who was an abortion supporter. Its domestic operation is led by pro-abortion activist Tracy Weitz, Ph.D., MPA. Weitz has worked at Planned Parenthood, The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health and once defined abortion as “a moral action undertaken by moral agents.”

As Koreans ask why the country ― the 13th-largest economy in the world ― remains vulnerable to man-made disasters, some point to the process of rapid industrialization of the ’60s to the ’80s that saw Korea rise from the rubble of the Korean War to become the thriving economy it is today.

The culture of “ppalli ppalli,” or “hurry hurry,” is a byproduct of the era which saw economic development as the overarching goal. The whole country was in overdrive, disregarding rules and procedures if necessary, as it pursued accelerated economic development. Following decades of such circumvention of laws, Korean society became desensitized to the risks it was taking.

Park Gil-sung, a sociology professor at Korea University, notes a number of unique cultural cognition factors that may be at play that elevate risk: Unfounded optimism which leads to thinking that everything will go well, adventurism that views acute reaction to danger as cowardly behavior, and exceptionalism or thinking “I will be alright.”
“Together, baseless optimism and adventurism heighten the explosiveness of potential risks,” Park observed. “Add self-exceptionalism to the combination and this leads to insensitivity to risks,” Park said.

Fatalism, or the view that man has no power to influence the future or his own action, may explain why Koreans do not act proactively in anticipation of future danger or a crisis situation. In a 1996 book on abnormal psychology, Kwon Seok-man, professor of psychology at Seoul National University, writes about the passive fatalistic view that permeates through Korean culture. Fortunetelling and feng shui enjoy widespread popularity here because of the pervasiveness of fatalism, he noted.

The acoustic duo members, Lee Chan-hyuk, 17, and Lee Soo-hyun, 14, remained No. 1 in Melon’s “top-20 artist ranking” and “top-20 album chart” from April 7 through May 11, YG Entertainment stated on Tuesday.
The album also topped Mnet’s “M! Countdown” and SBS’ “Music Trend” for three consecutive weeks.

Iran said on Sunday it has succeeded in copying a US drone it captured in December 2011, with state television broadcasting images apparently showing the replicated aircraft.

Tehran captured the US RQ-170 Sentinel in 2011 while it was in its airspace, apparently on a mission to spy on the country's nuclear sites, media in the United States reported……

……Iran has been working to develop a significant drone programme of its own, and some of its unmanned aircraft have a range of hundreds of kilometres (miles) and are armed with missiles.

The state broadcaster also showed images that the commentary said had been recorded by an Iranian drone above a US aircraft carrier in the Gulf.

In the pictures, which were relatively clear, it was possible to see American personnel working on planes and helicopters aboard the vessel.

During March 7-9, the First Family spent Spring Break at the exclusive Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla., where members must have a minimum net worth of $35 million to join. Other expenses of that trip have not been made public.

CONGRESS REJECTS THE PENTAGON SEQUESTRATION CUTS WORTH BILLIONS–BUT STILL FORCES THE PENTAGON BUDGET TO BE CAPPED AT $521.3 BILLION FOR 2015–SAVES A RETIRING AIRCRAFT CARRIER AND THE AIRFORCE A-10 TANK KILLER

House lawmakers have rejected most of the Pentagon’s proposed cost-saving measures for next year, raising serious questions about how the military will stay under budget limits once sequestration returns in 2016.

The House Armed Services Committee this week passed a defense bill that rejected plans from the Pentagon to save billions of dollars by cutting an aircraft carrier, legacy aircraft, troop pay raises and benefits and excess bases.           

“By handcuffing the Pentagon, the Congress is forcing the military to become hollow,” said Todd Harrison, director of Defense Budget Studies at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. 

The Pentagon had proposed retiring an aircraft carrier in 2016 that would cost billions of dollars to keep in service, and had set that plan in motion by not putting any money towards maintenance and repair in 2015.

The House panel rejected that decision, allocating $796.2 million towards refueling and overhauling the carrier in 2015.

Still, it is unclear but it is unclear how the Pentagon would foot the rest of the bill, since the repair of the carrier is expected to cost as much as $6 billion over the next several years, and billions more in operations throughout its lifespan. 

The effort to save the carrier was led by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), in whose state the carrier would be repaired. 

The House panel also rejected a proposal to retire the Air Force’s A-10 fleet that would have saved more than $4 billion over the next five years, instead putting $635 million towards maintaining, operating and upgrading the planes in 2015.

The amendment to save the A-10 was led by Rep. Ron Barbour (D-Ariz.), who state is home to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and an A-10 fighter wing.
