Last week, Yahoo! Finance ran a story titled “The reign of payday lenders may soon be over.”  The article recounts how the advocacy group National People’s Action’s advertisements during the Discovery Chanel’s Shark Week painted the payday loan industry as a bunch of vicious predators. Celebrities John Oliver and Sarah Sliverman joined forces and begged people to “literally do anything else” but take out payday loans.

What, exactly, qualifies Oliver and Silverman, who are both comedians, to give financial advice to people? Nothing.

Of course, Oliver had no problem making fun of TV host Montel Williams as unqualified to hand out financial advice. (Williams participated in a commercial promoting a lending company).

Regardless, the basic problem here is the complete failure to acknowledge that people may actually find these payday loans useful.

The Yahoo! article cites enormous growth in the payday loan industry, from “just over $1.5 billion in 2006 to more than $4 billion in 2013.”  But it completely discounts the possibility that this industry grew so much because it provided a useful service, one that is, on balance, beneficial to both customer and business owner. Sometimes, people may consider it worth it to have money they need now – even if they have to pay for it.

Maybe that’s too difficult to grasp for well-heeled actors and actresses who never run out of cash because they make such a good living from reading scripts and pretending, but many people actually depend on credit to buy things.  (Some payday loan customers even tip their tellers.)

The article makes several claims that critics continue using to mistakenly paint the industry as evil, including:

• “The most nefarious payday lenders charge upwards of 390 percent interest on loans.”

The article appears to get these figures from a Pew study, and it seems as though they are converting fees and interest rates to annual percentage rates (APRs).  But the APR concept represents the yearly interest cost over the term of the loan, so these high percentages typically do not describe anything useful for short-term payday loans.

Chinese Defense Ministry here on Saturday urged the U.S. side to stop close-in surveillance of China, and create a sound atmosphere for bilateral military ties.

The ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said in a statement that one U.S. anti-submarine plane and one patrol aircraft flew to an airspace about 220 kilometers east of China's Hainan Island to conduct close-in surveillance Tuesday morning, and then a Chinese fighter jet took off to make regular identification and verification.

Commenting on relevant criticism made by the U.S. side, Yang said that was "totally groundless," as the Chinese pilot, with professional operation, kept the jet within a safe distance from the U.S. aircraft.

It was U.S. massive and frequent close-in surveillance of China that endanger the two sides' air and marine security, and is the root of accidents, he said.

President Obama took time out from his busy social schedule to present a statement Wednesday afternoon on the ISIS (or ISIL) beheading of a kidnapped American photojournalist. It was unsurprisingly full of empty rhetoric without any reference to action.

He began by announcing that “the entire world is appalled” by the murder of James Wright Foley – or as Obama referred to him repeatedly and familiarly, “Jim” (this has to be the first speech by Obama in which he referred to someone else more often than himself). Foley’s murder was “an act of violence that shocks the conscience of the entire world.” I don’t believe the President of the United States is authorized to speak for the entire world, but in any case there is a significant portion of the world that not only wasn’t shocked but has no conscience about the butchering of infidels, and that’s the problem that needs to be addressed.

But first, Obama eulogized Foley: “Jim was a journalist, a son, a brother, and a friend.” Such an intimate, even maudlin statement would be entirely suitable among friends and relatives at a funeral service but is frankly unworthy of a presidential announcement to the world. But Obama wasn’t done expressing his unconvincing grief: “All of us feel the ache of his absence. All of us mourn his loss.” Apparently Obama mourns by heading straight to the links for another round of golf, because that’s what he did immediately after he delivered this statement.

“We keep in our prayers those other Americans who are separated from their families,” he continued. Like U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who remains jailed in Mexico and has been separated from his family since late March? Keeping him in one’s prayers is a nice gesture but is no substitute for the President of the United States actually lifting a finger to bring that Marine home, something Obama hasn’t done.

He moved on to address the monsters behind Foley’s beheading and countless other sick atrocities. “Let’s be clear about ISIL,” said Obama, although we know by now that anytime Obama declares that he’s going to be clear about something, he’s just posturing at sounding authoritative. He acknowledged that “they have rampaged across cities and villages, killing innocent, unarmed civilians in cowardly acts of violence. They abduct women and children, and subject them to torture and rape and slavery.” Then he purposefully notes that they have murdered Muslims by the thousands and “target Christians and religious minorities, driving them from their homes, murdering them when they can for no other reason than they practice a different religion.”

Yes – a religion different from Islam, but Obama didn’t make that connection. Instead, he declared that “ISIL speaks for no religion.” No? The Islamic State speaks for no religion? “Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents.” His language here is disingenuous, because of course Muslim fundamentalists have a different definition of “innocent” from ours, and they have never had a problem slaughtering less orthodox Muslims. “No just God would stand for what they did yesterday… ISIL has no ideology of any value to human beings.”

Joshua Katz, an Army veteran and former CIA operations officer who served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said it is “very, very, true” that ISIS may have crossed the southern border.

Katz reported that Gov. Rick Perry’s (R-TX) recent comments that it was a “very real possibility” that ISIS had already crossed the southern border were “very, very true” on Friday’s “Fox and Friends” on the Fox News Channel. 

“ISIS is a group that will do whatever it takes in order to accomplish its goals. It's very brutal. It's very aggressive. They're going to do anything, and if that means working with cartels, if that means working with other enlisted groups in order to attack the homeland, they will do that. Other groups like Al Qaeda, or other terrorist groups who have a desire to hit the homeland will also use that ... we have this sort of this double front aggression toward American borders” he added.

What a difference a year makes. Around this time last year, the West was gearing up for military action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was accused of carrying out chemical weapons attacks on his own people. That intervention never came to pass, not least because domestic public opinion in countries such as Britain and the United States was opposed to further entanglements in the Middle East.

Now, the U.S. is contemplating extending airstrikes on Islamic State militants operating in Iraq in Syria — fighters belonging to a terrorist organization that is leading the war against Assad. The Islamic State's territorial gains in Iraq and continued repression and slaughter of religious minorities there and in Syria have rightly triggered global condemnation. "I am no apologist for the Assad regime," Ryan Crocker, a former U.S. ambassador to Syria, told NPR. "But in terms of our security, [the Islamic State] is by far the greatest threat."

The irony of the moment is tragic. But to some, it doesn't come as much of a surprise. Many cautioned against the earlier insistence of the Obama administration (as well as other governments) that Assad must go, fearing what would take hold in the vacuum.

Lots of folks are wondering (hoping?) Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2016. Frankly, I don’t believe she will, as her missteps continue to get worse – oh, have you heard about her diva-ish speaking contract riders?

But don’t worry too much about Hillary, because if does ditch the presidential race, she has a great future in the construction industry — and in particular cement.

According to Algemeiner, “Much has been said and written about the terror tunnels that Hamas built in Gaza. But too little has been said about who it was that put the cement into Hamas’ hands, thus making the construction of the tunnels possible in the first place. Until now. In a bombshell revelation, Dennis Ross, the senior Mideast policy adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from 2009 to 2011, has admitted that it was he who was assigned the task of pressuring Israel to ease up on its military blockade of Gaza.”

And who assigned him that task? Why the chief cement-pourer herself.

“I argued with Israeli leaders and security officials, telling them they needed to allow more construction materials, including cement, into Gaza so that housing, schools and basic infrastructure could be built,” Ross revealed in the Washington Post on August 10. “They countered that Hamas would misuse it, and they were right.”

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard much about this revelation and of course I can attest as to why not. I wonder if the Chairman of the Democrat Party, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who just happens to be Jewish, will be upset about this? Or how about Sen. Chuck Schumer? Matter of fact, will any of the Jewish Members of the House or Senate come out and denounce Hillary Clinton over this information? After all, it was IDF Sergeant Gilad Shalit who was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists using one of the tunnels — and of course countless Palestinian terrorists were released in exchange for Shalit.

In this recent iteration of combat against the Islamic terror group Hamas, Israel has uncovered nearly three dozen of these terrorist infiltration tunnels — as we wrote here – intended to be used in a massive terror assault in Israel on Rosh Hashanah. But hey, it’s Israel’s fault.

Now, Ms. Clinton would have a ready-made board of directors for her construction company as her State Department didn’t work alone in the cement business. Vice President Joe Biden told interviewer Charlie Rose on Bloomberg TV in 2010: “We have put as much pressure and as much cajoling on Israel as we can to allow them to get building materials” and other forbidden items into Gaza.

Several dozen special-operations forces attempted to rescue Americans held hostage by ISIS in Syria earlier this summer but failed, it was revealed Wednesday following the graphic release of a video showing the gruesome beheading of photojournalist James Foley.

The mission was carried out earlier this summer but failed because the hostages had been moved by the time U.S. forces arrived for the rescue, according to statements released by the White House and State Department

'This operation involved air and ground components and was focused on a particular captor network within ISIL,' the State Department statement reads. 'Unfortunately, the mission was not successful because the hostages were not present at the targeted location.'

Officially, the administration said it would not release more details on the raid, but sources told the New York Times that the mission was carried out by two dozen special-ops members, who were dropped off in Syria in early July and were met with gunfire.

'While on site, it became apparent the hostages were not there,' one of the officials said.

North Korea has moved scores of tanks and armored vehicles to an Army corps near the border with China in Ryanggang Province. The 12th Corps, which was established in 2010, is tasked with responding to movements of Chinese troops in an emergency.

A source on Monday said about 80 tanks have been deployed in Ryanggang Province, where there had not been a single one before. The corps has been "turned into an attack force after it has been reinforced" with an armored infantry unit, a unit of multiple rocket launchers, and a special warfare and sharpshooter brigade.

JAPAN TO DEVELOP ITS OWN STEALTH FIGHTER JETS TO BE READY IN 2017 - TO COMBAT CHINA’S J20 FIGHTER JET

This is Japan's new generation of stealth fighter jets -- the Shinshin.
It's 14 meters long and equipped with double engines to produce extra lift and power control mid-air.
It's largely aimed at rivaling the stealth capability of China's fighter jets the J-20, which will be combat ready in 2017.

The latest model, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is being prepared for flight experiments in January of next year and the Japanese defense ministry says it's expected to put them into use by the year 2030.

Horrific video of American freelance photo-journalist James Wright Foley, 40, being beheaded by ISIS in revenge for US airstrikes 12-days ago in Iraq was posted to the internet Tuesday afternoon.

Foley, has been missing since November, 2012, after being taken hostage at gunpoint while reporting from Taftanaz, in northern Syria, for the agency, GlobalPost.

ISIS posted the extremely graphic video shot at an unknown location, titled 'A Message to America' to social media as proof of their barbaric actions.

India has emerged as the world's largest arms buyer in recent years, but hopes to reverse this by strengthening its domestic defense industry. The United States was India's largest arms supplier in recent years, dislodging Russia as New Delhi's principal source of weapons.

Defense Minister Arun Jaitley told parliament that India bought arms worth nearly $5.5 billion from the United States in the last three years, surpassing purchases from Russia worth about $4 billion during the same period.
According to Rahul Bedi at IHS Jane's Defense Weekly in New Delhi, more deals with Washington are in the pipeline.

"There are two contracts for helicopters, attack helicopters and heavy lift helicopters, which the U.S. has secured over Russian platforms, they were pitted against Russian helicopters, and that is worth another $2.5 billion, so the American kitty seems to be growing," Bedi said.

In recent years, India has been trying to diversify its arms purchases to move away from its huge dependency on weapons from Moscow, its Cold War ally.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (Vt.), an independent who caucuses with Democrats, told The Hill Friday that Congress should have a full debate over whether to continue limited military action in Iraq.

Sanders acknowledged that insurgents in the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) pose a threat, but worries that U.S. intervention could become a slippery slope. 

“I do not want to see us caught again in a ground war,” he said. “I do believe there needs to be a heck a lot of discussion in the Congress as to what our long-term plans in Iraq and in the region.” 

House Democrats have also pressed for Obama to seek congressional approval if strikes last well into the fall. 

But many other lawmakers would prefer not to take up this charged issue weeks before an election.

“A member of Congress is always most politically safe if they limit their activities to riding in parades,” acknowledged Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.).

“One of the many reasons Congress doesn’t act is because it’s politically risky to take any action at all,” he added.

But Sherman argues it is Congress’s responsibility to hold a vote.

“We do have a constitution, we ought to [have a vote] in a non-partisan way,” he said.

In the letter Obama sent to Congress notifying them of the strikes under the War Powers Act, the president said U.S. action would be limited.

Under the act, the president can take limited actions for as long as 90 days without congressional authority. 

In June, Democratic Reps. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) and Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) added an amendment to the defense appropriations bill that requires the administration to seek the advice and consent of Congress before sustained military action in Iraq. The bill passed 340-73.

Jens Ohlin, a law professor at Cornell University who specializes in international law, said Obama must receive congressional permission if we wants to extend military action beyond the 60-day window and the 30-day wind-down period provided by the War Powers Act.

He said the action cannot be covered by the 2002 Iraqi use-of-force resolution of the 2001 resolution authorizing force in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

“I don’t think you can shoehorn this into the original Iraq invasion authorization because it’s just so far removed from the original Iraqi invasion and I don’t think you can shoehorn it into the 2001 AUMF [authorization of military force] which was specifically designed to respond to organizations responsible for the 9/11 attacks,” he said.

Islamic State militants today 'massacred' more than 300 Yazidi men - just one day after allegedly killing 82 others who refused to convert to Islam.

The insurgents stormed into the small village of Kocho in northern Iraq, where they spent five days trying to persuade villagers to take up their religion, local officials said.

When they refused, 82 male members of the ancient sect were reportedly rounded up and shot dead yesterday, while more than 100 women and girls were kidnapped.

And today, a further 312 Yazidis were allegedly murdered and their families abducted.
