Driverless trucks will be safer and cheaper than their
human-controlled counterparts, but that doesn’t mean America’s 3.5
million professional truck drivers are giving up to the machines without
a fight.
Across the US, truckers collectively haul more than 10bn tons of
freight each year, but it’s a tough job – the hours are long and lonely,
the pay is low and the lifestyle is sedentary. In many ways it’s a job
ripe for disruption; robots v truckers.
“Picture the taxi drivers around the world acting in response to
Uber,” says Andy Stern, the former former president of the Service
Employees International Union, referring to protests and violence that erupted in many cities as the $62.5bn Silicon Valley on-demand ride-hailing firm challenged conventional, regulated taxis.
“Truck drivers will follow a similar pattern,” says Stern. “There
will be disruption in different places. You can imagine people ringing
state capitals with their trucks.”
Much has been written about the advent of the driverless car, with rival versions being developed by Google, Uber and Tesla,
yet driverless trucks are likely to roll out at scale much sooner.
“Individuals can make their own choices about whether they want to get
into a driverless car or taxi, but labour-saving technology will be
deployed by businesses much quicker,” explains Stern, whose book Raising the Floor explores the need for a universal basic income as technology replaces jobs.
Mining giant Rio Tinto already uses 45 240-ton driverless trucks to move iron ore in two Australian mines, saying it is cheaper and safer than using human drivers.
Now the race is on to put driverless trucks on public roads. In May
2015, the first self-driving truck hit the American road in the state of
Nevada, and there have been several tests around the world since then including a convoy that drove across Europe to the port of Rotterdam
in April. That convoy used a new automated driving technology called
platooning, which connects trucks using Wi-Fi, sensors, GPS and cameras.
The leading vehicle dictates speed and direction, while the rest
automatically steer, speed up and slow down in close convoy.
In San Francisco, former Googlers have launched a startup called Otto, which promises to retrofit vehicles with driverless capabilities for just $30,000. The average trucker’s wage is around $40,000 per year.

"... It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings."....I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

KEEP ON TRUCKING BUT NOW WITHOUT THE TRUCKER IN THE CAB AS TRUCKING COMPANIES INVESTING ON DRIVERLESS TRUCKS - AS THE 10 BILLION TON YEARLY TRUCKING INDUSTRY IS LOOKING FOR A BOOST BY ELIMINATING THE 3.5 MILLION PROFESSIONAL TRUCKERS - AS ALREADY IN MAY 2015 THE FIRST DRIVERLESS TRUCK NAVIGATED IN NEVADA
THE EVIDENCE MOUNTED AGAINST THE ISIS KILLER OF ORLANDO PATRONS AS THE FBI WAS AND LOOKED TO BE HAMSTRING FROM MAKING ACTIONS FOR POLITICAL REASONS IT WOULD SEEM WITH AS THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES WEIGHTED PAST THE SCALE OF JUSTICE AND THE DEMOCRATS IN POWER LOOKED THE OTHER WAY SINCE THE MUSLIM KILLER AFTER THE FACT GOES AGAINST THE NORM IN THE LEFTIST EYES OF WHAT YOU CAN CALL A HATE CRIME WHEN SPEWS OF JUGGERNAUT OF HATRED COMES FROM THE VILE OF THE MOUTH PIECE
OMAR Mateen moved on and off the
FBI’s radar in the years leading up to Sunday’s massacre at an Orlando
gay nightclub, and there were unmistakeable warning signs of his growing
Islamic radicalism as recently as just weeks before his rampage.
As
officials investigate whether others may have been involved in the
attack, which left 49 dead and 53 wounded, lawmakers are trying to find
out how the 29-year-old slipped through the cracks. He was on an FBI watch list twice, reported to authorities by a fearful co-worker, raised alarms at Disney World earlier this year and made a Florida gun shop owner nervous enough to alert police.
“The committee is conducting this inquiry to better understand the root causes of homegrown extremism, assess the vulnerabilities of so-called ‘soft’ targets, and oversee the work of federal law-enforcement entities,” read a letter sent Wednesday from Senate Homeland Security Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., to FBI Director James Comey.
Comey has already told lawmakers he reviewed Mateen’s history and found nothing his “agents should have done differently”. Yet as details emerge about Mateen’s radical behaviour, hindsight is revealing numerous warning signs, and the heat on the FBI is increasing.
“The question is whether the FBI had the evidence to take action and did not,” said Ryan Mauro, national security analyst for the Clarion Project and a professor of Homeland Security for Liberty University.
The FBI conducted a 10-month investigation into Mateen first in 2013, prompted by Mateen’s claim he had connections to al-Qaeda and Boston Marathon bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

VOLCANO ERUPTIONS ARE THE NORM IN THE LATE 20TH AND NOW EARLY 21ST CENTURY AS THE PHILIPPINES MOUNT KANLAON SPEWS ASH 1.5KM INTO THE ATMOSPHERE - GLOBAL WARMING ANYONE - HOW WILL THE LEFTIST MAKE LAWS BANNING VOLCANO ERUPTIONS THEN
A rumbling volcano in the central Philippines shot a huge column of
ash into the sky on Saturday (June 18), prompting the official aviation
agency to warn aircraft to stay away, the authorities said.
Mount Kanlaon, located in the central island of Negros, launched a plume of whitish-grey ash about 1.5km into the air, said Kenn John Veracruz of the official Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The civil aviation office issued an advisory, saying "flights operating in the vicinity of the volcano are advised to avoid flying close to the summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft".
The volcano, located about 510km south of Manila, has been more active than usual since November, prompting the government to ban hikers from its slopes.
Mr Veracruz said that so far the authorities had not detected any lava rising inside the 2.47km-high volcano, but they were checking how far the ash was being scattered by the wind and whether it could affect nearby communities.
"It has been raining in recent days so there was likely water that
built up inside the volcano and since the crater is hot, it built up the
steam pressure," causing the eruption of ash, Mr Veracruz, a member of
the institute's volcano monitoring division, told AFP.

THE NOT SO FEARFUL ATTORNEY GENERALS OF KOREA CAN GO AFTER THE BIGGEST NAMES WHEN IT COMES TO CURRUPTION, KICKBACKS, ILLEGAL POLITICAL MONEY LAUNDERING AND THE KDRAMA OF FEIGNING SICKNESS COMES TRUE WITH THE 93 YEAR OLD LOTTE CHAIRMAN, NOT SO IN THE USA SINCE POLITICIANS CAN GET AWAY WITH MURDER AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS NOW RUN BY THE SAME CROOKED LEADERS THE DEMOCRATS IN POWER - FOR INSTANCE POTUS FOR 2016 DEMOCRAT HILLARY CLINTON WHO RUNS FOR HER LIFE TO GET INTO POWER SO SHE CAN HAVE IMMUNITY FROM BRIBES AND MISDEMEANORS - WITH POWER AND MONEY OF THE US TREASURY TO BACK HER UP
The 93-year-old was moved to Asan Medical Center earlier in the day from Seoul National University Hospital where he had been admitted since June 9 due to high fever, said the official close to Shin Dong-joo, the founder's eldest son.
The official said there was medical opinion that the founder needs more recovery time due to his old age and his family made the request to transfer him to Asan Medical Center.
It remains unclear why his family made the request for the transfer.
Seoul National University Hospital and Asan Medical Center are among the top medical centers in South Korea.
The transfer came as prosecutors have widened their probe into the South Korea's fifth-largest conglomerate on suspicions of embezzlement and creating slush funds through dubious deals with affiliates and companies with links to the owner family.

WHAT MAYBE A SIMILAR SEX ASSUALT OF A CELEBRITY BILL COSBY OF KOREA HAS A KPOP STAR PARK YU-CHUN BEING ACCUSED OF A 4TH BATHROOM SEXUAL ASSAULT ACCUSATION AS WOMEN VICTIMS ARE NOW EMPOWERED TO MAKE THE CHARGE
Park Yu-chun, the scandal-ridden member of popular K-pop boy band JYJ, claimed Friday that the rape charges filed against him are false accusations, pledging to stop his entertainment activities if he is found guilty.
According to the police, a third and fourth woman filed separate complaints earlier in the day claiming that Park sexually assaulted them each in 2014 and 2015.
The third complainant, whose identity was withheld, filed the case with the Gangnam Police Station, claiming Park raped her in the bathroom of his house in June 2014. Another woman also claimed that he raped her in the bathroom of a karaoke bar in February 2015, the police said.
The third woman claimed the incident took place after she, along with Park and other companions, moved to Park's house from a local bar in southern Seoul where they had been drinking, according to police. The two did not know each other previously.
Just Thursday, another woman filed a similar complaint against Park, saying she was raped by him in the bathroom of a bar in December 2015.

US BANKERS AND INTERNATIONAL BANKERS ARE STRESSED TO THE MAX WITH MANY COMMITTING THE FINAL ACT OF SUICIDE SO IT SEEMS AS THE GLOBAL CREATED BANK SCANDALS CREATING INSTITUTION TO GO BELLY UP
Three bankers in New York, London and Siena, Italy, died within 17 months of each other in 2013-14 in what authorities deemed a series of unrelated suicides. But in each case, the victim had a connection to a burgeoning global banking scandal, leaving more questions than answers as to the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The March 6, 2013 death of David Rossi — a 51-year-old communications director at Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest bank — came as the institution teetered on the brink of collapse.
Rossi was found dead in an alleyway beneath his third-floor office window in the 14th-century palazzo that served as the bank’s headquarters.
A devastating security video shows Rossi landing on the pavement on his back, facing the building — an odd position more likely to occur when a body is pushed from a window.
The footage shows the three-story fall didn’t kill Rossi instantly. For almost 20 minutes, the banker lay on the dimly lit cobblestone, occasionally moving an arm and leg.
As he lay dying, two murky figures appear. Two men appear and one walks over to gaze at the banker. He offers no aid or comfort and doesn’t call for help before turning around and calmly walking out of the alley.
About an hour later, a co-worker discovered Rossi’s body. The arms were bruised and he sustained a head wound that, according to the local medical examiner’s report, suggested there may have been a struggle prior to his fall.
But the death was ruled a suicide to the disbelief of Rossi’s widow, Antonella Tognazzi. She was quoted in the Italian press as saying her husband “knew too much.” She staged public demonstrations and hired a lawyer to investigate her husband’s death.

THE WORD IS OUT AND WITH THE DEMOCRAT PARTY OF PRO ILLEGAL AND LEGAL IMMIGRATION POLICY HAS COME TO FRUITION WITH TERORISTS NOW AMONGST US AS ORLANDO GETS 50 SHOT AND KILLED WITH 53 INJURED THIS SUNDAY MORNING WITH MORE TO COME AS THE MSM CRIES WITH NO ONE LISTENING ANYMORE TO ETHNIC RANTINGS OF WHO DONE IT
The gunman who slaughtered at least 50 people after taking party-goers hostage inside a gay club in Orlando had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, according to California congressman Adam Schiff.
Schiff, who serves as top Democrat on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN: 'What I've heard from the Department of Homeland Security this morning is that, according to local police, he made a pledge of allegiance to ISIL (ISIS).'
He said the shooting was 'highly indicative of an ISIL-inspired attack'.
Schiff added: '[He] was heard praying in a foreign language and I don't know if this was at some point during the course of the shooting but that's what I'm hearing, obviously second hand, coming ultimately from local police.'
Law enforcement sources have identified the shooter, who was wielding an AR-15 assault rifle and a handgun, as US citizen Omar Mateen, 29, from Port St. Lucie in Florida.
The gunman, who was born to Afghan parents, opened fire on the dance floor inside Pulse night club in the early hours of this morning.
At least 50 people were killed and 53 others were injured in the shooting in the deadliest mass shooting in US history. A surgeon at Orlando Regional Medical Center said the death toll was likely to climb.
An FBI spokesman said the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism, adding that they are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.
Schiff said in a statement: 'This attack is so painfully reminiscent of the terrible attack at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, and other ISIS-inspired attacks in recent years.

THE RUSSIANS YU-74 ARE TOO AS THE CHINESE FOLLOWING THE USA WITH ITS SUPER TOP SECRET HYPERSONIC GLIDER TO PENETRATE ANY CURRENT MISSILE DEFENSE
Going head to head with the United States and China, Russia has been developing its own hypersonic weapons during the past few years.
A hypersonic weapon usually has a speed between 3,840 miles per hour (Mach 5) and 7,680 miles per hour (Mach 10). Furthermore, these systems use sophisticated technologies for maneuvering and boast allow the rapid delivery of warheads, precise targeting and survivability against wide range of missile defense systems.
Last year Russia conducted a series of tests of the Yu-71 hypersonic attack aircraft. The Yu-71 is part of secret missile program codenamed "Project 4202." The glider was said to reach speeds of up to 7,000 miles per hour. Due to its outstanding maneuverability and high speed the system can overcome any defense shield, military experts noted.

INTERNATIONAL CHINESE HACKERS ATTACKING THE UNSUSPECTED SERVER OF ANYONE EVEN A RURAL PC IN THE BACK ROOM TO JUMP START THIER ENTRY INTO AMERICAN COMPANIES AND DEFENSE WEB PORTAL AS THIS SMALL WISCONSIN WELDING COMPANY WAS INFECETD AS THE POINT OF PUSH AND PULL FOR TRACING ACTIVITY AFTER ONCE FOUND FROM THE SILICON VALLEY ANTI HACK COMPANY
Drive past the dairy farms, cornfields and horse pastures here and you will eventually arrive at Cate Machine & Welding, a small-town business run by Gene and Lori Cate and their sons. For 46 years, the Cates have welded many things — fertilizer tanks, jet-fighter parts, cheese molds, even a farmer’s broken glasses.
And like many small businesses, they have a dusty old computer humming away in the back office. On this one, however, an unusual spy-versus-spy battle is playing out: The machine has been taken over by Chinese hackers.
The hackers use it to plan and stage attacks. But unbeknown to them, a Silicon Valley start-up is tracking them here, in real time, watching their every move and, in some cases, blocking their efforts.
“When they first told us, we said, ‘No way,’” Mr. Cate said one afternoon recently over pizza and cheese curds, recalling when he first learned the computer server his family used to manage its welding business had been secretly repurposed. “We were totally freaked out,” Ms. Cate said. “We had no idea we could be used as an infiltration unit for Chinese attacks.”
On a recent Thursday, the hackers’ targets appeared to be a Silicon Valley food delivery start-up, a major Manhattan law firm, one of the world’s biggest airlines, a prominent Southern university and a smattering of targets across Thailand and Malaysia. The New York Times viewed the action on the Cates’ computer on the condition that it not name the targets.
The activity had the hallmarks of Chinese hackers known as the C0d0s0 group, a collection of hackers for hire that the security industry has been tracking for years. Over the years, the group has breached banks, law firms and tech companies, and once hijacked the Forbes website to try to infect visitors’ computers with malware.
