President Obama will make the first public campaign appearance of the 2014 cycle Sunday in Maryland — just 16 days before voters head to the polls.

But the event — like almost every rally on the president’s schedule over the next two weeks — will be for the state’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Anthony Brown.

In the biggest game in town  — whether or not Democrats hold the Senate  — the president is virtually absent from the campaign trail to help his party hold the upper chamber.

He’s fundraised to help Senate Democrats for months. But just over two weeks out the White House seems to have come to a sober reality  — even though he has a ton to lose if Republicans take back the Senate, the president is more of a liability than an asset for Democrats locked in tough races.

While the White House has said Obama will travel in the coming days to Illinois, Michigan, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Maine, it’s only with Senate hopeful Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) — who has a healthy lead in the polls — that the president is committed to appear publicly alongside a federal candidate.

That’s despite Obama repeatedly emphasizing how crucial retaining control of the upper chamber is to the remainder of his second term.

“We really need to have the kind of Congress that is serious about the issues that matter to folks… I need everybody listening to understand this is really, really important,” Obama said in a radio interview Wednesday. “I need everybody’s help. This is the last election I’m involved in that really makes a difference.”

Even Democrats reluctantly admit his absence is probably for the best.

The Obama administration stopped shipping to Israel all defense items – and not just Hellfire missiles as previously reported – for a short time in the middle of the war against Hamas, reported Israel Defense’s Amir Rappaport, the well-informed and highly credibly editor of the website.

Makor Rishon added to that report that the US actually cut off all communications with Israel’s Ministry of Defense purchasing offices in the US for days.

The Defense Ministry, now realizing it cannot always depend on the Obama administration in a time of crisis, already has decided under a “veil of secrecy,” according to Israel Defense, to manufacture a highly sensitive weapon in Israel instead of buying it from the United States.

The change in policy is a major step that would wean Israel away from dependence on the United States and which also would be a significant change in the policy of buying American-made weapons with most financial assistance from the United States.

The short-lived American ban on travel to Israel when Hamas was firing missiles on metropolitan Tel Aviv should not apply to banning visas from Ebola-infected countries because such a move would be “counter-productive,” U.S. State Dept. Jen Psaki told reporters Thursday.

“I wanted to ask why this situation and the discussion of a travel ban is so different from the travel ban that was issued by the FAA a few months ago, when there were bombs raining down on the Tel Aviv airport and there were concerns about the safety of Americans,” one journalist asked Psaki.

Psaki explained that no visa ban is necessary because there are “necessary screenings in place” and that visa are needed “to provide supplies, [for] being able to train people, being able to track and ensure that we’re going – we’re allowing for a global response to this effort.

“It would be counterproductive even to allow those individuals not to be able to apply. We don’t see a medical benefit to it, so that’s why we haven’t made the decision.

During the wear, the Iron Dome system effectively intercepted missiles that threatened Ben Gurion Airport, but when some debris of the anti-missile system was found in a nearby city, the Obama administration jumped on the “danger” to ban travel. The ban was issued immediately after President Barack Obama complained that Israel’s retaliation to the missile bombardment, threatening most of Israel, was disproportionate” because the Israeli counter-terror campaign was far more effective than Hamas’ terrorist strikes.

The organizer of a South Korean concert where 16 people died Friday evening has been found dead after committing suicide, police told the local media.

Police said the man, surnamed Oh, 37, was found dead Saturday in Seongnam, a suburb south of Seoul, after having jumped 10 stories from a building near the site of the concert. 

Eleven people were injured along with the 16 who died during a performance by 4Minute, a popular Kpop group, when a ventilation grate they were standing on collapsed. Television reports said victims fell about 65 feet. 

The YTN network reported that concert organizers had repeatedly asked attendees to get off the grate before it collapsed. 

The police are currently investigating the cause of the collapse. A source with the police told South Korean news agency Newsis that Oh had been questioned for an hour and twenty minutes starting at 2 a.m. Saturday. 

"If violations of safety rules are found, we will take actions to punish those responsible for the accident,” an unnamed police officer told Yonhap News Agency. 

It is not known if Oh left a suicide note, but Newsis reported that he sent a text message to a colleague early Saturday apologizing to his family and the families of those who died in the accident. 

South Korea has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world. People in positions of responsibility sometimes take their own lives in times of crisis as a gesture of shame or contrition.

THERE was anger last night at a decision by the European Commission to give the green light to a new £16 billion nuclear plant in Britain, just 150 miles from the Irish coast.

The power station will be built by French company EDF at Hinkley Point in Somerset, in the southwest of England, after EU regulators found that Britain had not breached state aid rules.

In the first nuclear plant to be approved for a generation, two reactors are now set for completion by 2023, providing energy for the UK for around 60 years.

Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said the decision had been based solely on state subsidy rules, "personal or political" standpoints.

The Republic's National Trust, An Taisce, lost a legal bid to block the project in August when the High Court in London rejected its argument that British authorities had not consulted their Irish counterparts before granting consent for construction.

At the time An Taisce spokesman James Nix pointed out that the nuclear power station would be as close to the Irish coast as it was to London.

The Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria directly opposite the east coast of Ireland remains a source of tension between successive British and Irish governments.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan last night accused Europe of breaking its own competition rules by allowing "massive subsidies" for UK power plants, claiming yesterday's decision brought the EU closer to a "highly centralised energy model" that hindered development of a "cleaner, safer and more efficient energy future".

He also accused the Republic's government of turning a blind eye to the dawning of Britain's "new nuclear age", which did not take into account "the security risks" or "massive clean-up costs" when the plant is being decommissioned.

Sinn Fein's Michael Colreavy also described the proposed plant as a "regressive step", adding: "It is very disappointing to see that the British government is moving away from renewable, green energy and instead are proposing to use potentially dangerous energy sources such as nuclear."

The deadly Ebola virus could be mutating to become even more contagious, a leading U.S scientist has warned. 

The disease has killed nearly 4,000 people, infecting in excess of 8,000 - the majority in the West African nations of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Communities lie in ruins, thousands of children have been orphaned, millions face starvation but the virus continues its unprecedented pace, invading and destroying vast swathes of these countries.

Meanwhile three nurses, two in the U.S. and one in Spain have caught the infection while treating Ebola patients, despite wearing protective suits.

Now U.S. scientist Peter Jahrling of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease believes the current Ebola outbreak may be caused by an infection that spreads more easily than it did before.

Dr Jahrling explained that his team, who are working in the epicentre of the crisis in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, are seeing that the viral loads in Ebola patients are much higher than they are used to seeing.

He told Vox.com: 'We are using tests now that weren't using in the past, but there seems to be a belief that the virus load is higher in these patients [today] than what we have seen before. If true, that's a very different bug.

'I have a field team in Monrovia. They are running [tests]. They are telling me that viral loads are coming up very quickly and really high, higher than they are used to seeing.

'It may be that the virus burns hotter and quicker.'

The World Health Organization said Saturday that it wouldn’t explain details contained in an internal document obtained by The Associated Press in which the U.N. health agency said it fumbled early attempts to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

In the draft document, which wasn’t released publicly, WHO blamed numerous factors for the now explosive Ebola epidemic, including incompetent staff, bureaucracy and a lack of reliable information.

“WHO will not do interviews or explain details on this document until it is completed,” the health agency said in a statement Saturday. “WHO believes in transparency and accountability and will release this review when it is fact-checked.”

So far, Ebola has been blamed for 4,546 deaths in West Africa out of at least 9,191 cases. WHO estimated that there could be 10,000 cases every week by December unless stronger measures are enacted to fight the outbreak.

WHO said in the draft document that “nearly everyone” involved in the response to Ebola failed to notice factors that turned the outbreak into the biggest-ever on record.

President Obama’s new "Ebola czar" Ron Klain is not only a skilled political operator, but a longtime Washington D.C. partisan insider.

Klain's history of working for key Democrats in Washington suggests that Obama is picking someone that will not just silence some media critics, but members of his own party. His partisan nature, however, is likely to draw fire from Republican critics.

As Chief of Staff for Vice President Joe Biden, Klain was largely responsible for bringing then-TIME reporter Jay Carney to the White House as the Press Secretary for Biden. Carney moved to the Obama administration after Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stepped down in 2011.

As the chief of staff for Vice President Al Gore, Klain was deeply involved in the political battle of the 2000 election recount in Florida, remaining profoundly upset about the conclusion of that fight.

THE AIRFORCE X-37B RETURNS AFTER A 2 YEAR SPACE EXPLORATION

A top-secret space plane landed Friday at an Air Force base on the Southern California coast.

The plane spent nearly two years circling Earth on a classified mission. Known as the X-37B, it resembles a mini space shuttle.

It safely touched down at 9:24 a.m. Friday, officials at Vandenberg Air Force Base said.

Just what the plane was doing during its 674 days in orbit has been the subject of sometimes spectacular speculation.

Several experts have theorized it carried a payload of spy gear in its cargo bay. Other theories sound straight out of a James Bond film, including that the spacecraft would be able to capture the satellites of other nations or shadow China's space lab.

In a written release announcing the return of the craft, the Air Force only said it had been conducting "on-orbit experiments."

The X-37B program has been an orphan of sorts, bouncing since its inception in 1999 between several federal agencies, NASA among them. It now resides under the Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office.

……President Obama is facing difficult new options to bolster allies in both Syria and Iraq. As he weighs the recommendations for tougher action, Obama must worry that because of the deteriorating situation, he’s being pushed down the very path of escalation he had hoped to avoid.
U.S. strategy for Iraq and Syria is being managed by Gen. John Allen, the retired Marine who’s serving as special envoy and just returned from the region. The proposals under discussion at the White House are likely to include:
― Sending more Apache gunships to Iraq to counter the extremists’ offensive in Anbar Province. Some of these deadly attack helicopters are already at Baghdad Airport, and more could be sent to al-Asad air base in western Anbar, which remains under government control. From these two bases, a squadron of 20 or so Apaches could attack the Islamic State’s enclaves from al-Qaim in the northwest to Abu Ghraib in the Baghdad suburbs. Dempsey pointed to the Apaches last weekend in a TV interview as an “immediately available” tool to defend Baghdad Airport.
― Stepping up airstrikes over Iraq and Syria. To stop the extremists’ advance, some officials argue that 150 to 200 sorties a day may be needed, a sharp increase from 10 a day recently. Air power has limited effect against this insurgency, but Pentagon and State Department officials say right now it may be the only way to prevent further losses.
― Accelerate the training of the Iraqi army and a new Sunni national guard. Hundreds of foreign trainers, drawn from the special forces of the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Australia and other nations, will be working with the Iraqi military. A similar effort is needed for the Sunni guard. Plans call for three battalions of tribal fighters in Anbar and three more in Saladin province. U.S. officials believe a quick start for this program will boost morale among Sunni tribal leaders who say they’re ready to fight the extremists but lack the tools.
― Create a border strip in northern Syria that’s safe from air attacks by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Though Obama has long resisted this no-fly zone, many U.S. officials now argue it’s essential, not least to steady Turkey. Secretary of State John Kerry signaled his support last week, and Dempsey agreed Sunday: “Do I anticipate that there could be circumstances in the future where that [a no-fly zone] would be part of the campaign? President Barack Obama on Thursday authorized the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security to order selected Reserve units and members of the Individual Ready Reserve to active duty in connection with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The troops will be called up to augment active-duty personnel already deployed as part of Operation United Assistance, Obama said in his letter to House Speaker Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"The authorities that have been invoked will ensure the Department of Defense can properly sustain the military operations required in this effort," Obama said in the letter.

The U.S. military mission in Africa is to support the civilian-led humanitarian assistance effort.

Obama's order also authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to call up available U.S. Coast Guard assets not already operating under the Navy.

A crematorium in Richmond, Va. caught on fire last week after an overweight corpse created excessive heat and oil, reports said.

The 225-kilogram body came in last Wednesday to Southside Cremation Services.
However, just as the workers started to cremate the oversized corpse, the corpse's body fat produced the extra heat and oil, which directly went up the smokestack and set the rubber roof ablaze.

Neighbors reported the smoke billowing from the smokestack around noon.
Firemen contained the fire within 30 minutes. No major damages were reported.

Defying the U.S. and Europe is forcing Russian President Vladimir Putin to aid his biggest rival to the east. To avert a recession, Russia is turning to China for investment, granting it once restricted access to raw materials and advanced weapons.
Russia is likely to sign contracts for the delivery of S-400 missile systems and Su-35 fighter jets to China as early as the first quarter of next year, says Vasily Kashin, a China expert at the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies in Moscow. Russia may also supply China with its newest submarine, the Amur 1650, he says.
The Amur class submarine is one of the latest Russian submarine designs. It is advertised as an export version of the Lada class, a modernised version of the Kilo-class submarine with improved acoustic stealth, new combat systems, and an option for air-independent propulsion (AIP).
The new vessels are the fourth generation of the Kilo submarine family, with two models developed.

COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK PAYING ITS FEMALE EMPLOYEES AS A BENEFIT $20,000 TO FREEZE THEIR EGGS FOR A FUTURE FAMILY WHILST TODAY WORK COMES FIRST

WHEN I read the news that Apple and Facebook are now paying up to $20,000 for female employees to freeze their eggs, I had the distinct impression I was meant to react by dancing gleefully with my girls, high-fiving each other and generally whooping it up, as in a yoghurt or soap commercial.

Work-life balance? No longer a problem! Fertility? Oh-ho-ho, NAILED IT!

Except, no. No, to this news. No, to companies trying to get women to bargain away their biological clock in exchange for keeping their noses to the grindstone, never leaving the office because “Who cares? Time is on my side!”

This latest offering from Apple and Facebook is a devil’s deal in the guise of a gender equity perk. What a truly terrible idea this is, and what a weird, cynical message it sends to women.

First off, a few disclaimers: I am very pro-single woman. I was one until very recently.

I don’t like articles that try to make women feel afraid they’ll never have kids, and I don’t like these same women being told, either implicitly or explicitly, that they are somehow Less Than because they don’t have a husband or family.

I am an advocate of women finding and following their own path.

If women think they’d like to have kids but haven’t yet met the right person, I am absolutely in favour of them taking steps to potentially protect their fertility while gaining some much-needed calm at the same time.

But I’m also interested in scientific fact, and not preying on women’s insecurities while selling them the idea that egg-freezing is somehow the great feminist panacea.

Reverend Billy Graham, arguably the most well-known and respected evangelical preacher of the last 50 years, said in a recently published commentary that America was “founded by men who believed in prayer” and that prayer can turn “the tide of history,” adding that while “America is just as wicked as Sodom and Gomorrah” and deserves “the judgment of God,” this judgment can be lessened through prayer.

“Even though America is just as wicked as Sodom and Gomorrah ever were, and as deserving of the judgment of God, God would spare us if we were earnestly praying, with hearts that had been cleansed and washed by the blood of Christ,” said Rev. Graham in his commentary for Decision magazine, published by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

“The problems of the world will never be settled unless our national leaders go to God in prayer,” he said. “If only they would discover the power and wisdom that there is in reliance upon God, we could soon see the solution to the grave problems that face the world!”

President Barack Obama on Friday turned to a trusted adviser to lead the nation’s Ebola response as efforts to clamp down on any possible route of infection from three Texas cases expanded, reaching a cruise ship at sea and multiple airline flights.

Facing renewed criticism of his handling of the Ebola risk, Obama will make Ron Klain, a former chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, his point man on fighting Ebola at home and in West Africa. Klain will report to national security adviser Susan Rice and to homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco, the White House said.

Klain does not have a medical or a health care background.

Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., slammed the decision on Twitter.

“Worst ebola epidemic in world history and Pres. Obama puts a government bureaucrat with no healthcare experience in charge. Is he serious?” Harris tweeted.

       Between 70 and 100 passengers a day arrive at JFK from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three West African countries that are the epicenter of the outbreak, King said.

“These individuals transit the airport with the rest of the traveling population, including using the restrooms,” King wrote to Jeh Johnson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, in a letter Thursday.

“Only after they arrive at the Customs and Border Patrol primary screening location that they are separated and sent to secondary inspection for a medical check and to complete the questionnaire,” he wrote Johnson.

King’s letter demands that Homeland Security immediately beef up protocols for what happens to potentially infected passengers in flight and at the terminal itself, prior to their reaching the screening location.

Propelled by surging shale output, the United States is fighting for supremacy in the global oil market even as a pullback in crude prices threatens to challenge the boom.
The U.S., which only a few years ago seemed to be in the midst of an inexorable decline in domestic petroleum production, may have already overtaken other petroleum giants.
In terms of crude alone, the U.S. pumped 8.8 million barrels a day in September, still a distance from Russia’s 10.6 million barrels and Saudi Arabia’s 9.7 million, according to official sources.
But when natural gas liquids are included, the U.S. extracted 11.5 million barrels in August, essentially level with OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia, according to data from the International Energy Agency.
Regardless of whether it is at or near the top of the global petroleum pecking order, the U.S. is rethinking its decades-old ban on oil exports in light of the boom as energy emerges as an increasingly important foundation of the U.S. economy.
At the same time, the U.S. boom “has been changing the worldwide market,” said James Williams, energy economist for WTRG Economics. “It’s the thing that has put pressure on OPEC.”
The pace of growth has been staggering, with U.S. output rising nearly 60 percent since its low in 2008.
During previous booms, the U.S. added one million barrels per day of output over the course of a decade.

The World Health Organization said Tuesday the Ebola infection rate could soon reach 10,000 a week as world leaders prepared to hold talks on the crisis at the United Nations.
WHO assistant director general Bruce Aylward, describing his figures as a working forecast, said the epidemic “could reach 5,000 to 10,000 cases per week by the first week of December.”
The latest death toll is 4,447, from 8,914 recorded infection cases, Aylward said as the worst-ever Ebola outbreak spirals in the three hardest-hit countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The second health-care worker diagnosed with Ebola in Texas flew between Cleveland and Dallas hours before she reported symptoms to state health workers, U.S. health officials said today.

The caregiver caught the deadly virus while treating patient Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas this month. She flew to Dallas on Frontier Airlines flight 1143 the night of Oct. 13, according to a e-mailed statement by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She then reported symptoms the next morning.
