South Korea's Samsung Group was named as the third-most reputable firm in the United States, a report showed Sunday, on the back of its strong products and services appealing to American consumers.
Being the only foreign company to be included in the top-10 list, only two firms, grocery-chain operator Wegmans Food Markets Inc. and e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc., outperformed Samsung in terms of corporate reputation, the report by U.S.-based market researcher Harris Poll showed.
Apple Inc., which has been chasing the world's No. 1 maker of smartphones in terms of market shares, ranked at ninth place, while Google Inc. also managed to join the top-notch bracket at 10th place, the research showed.
"Samsung has steadily climbed up the ranks in recent years with consumers rating it among the five best on key reputational dimensions of products and services, emotional appeal, financial performance and vision and leadership," Harris Poll said in its release.
South Korea's smaller tech giant LG Group ranked at 23rd spot, hovering below Japan's Sony Corp. and U.S.-based Microsoft Corp. at 13th and 15th place, respectively.
Among carmakers, South Korea's top player Hyundai Motor Co. was placed at the 64th spot, hovering below Japanese rivals such as Honda and Toyota, which ranked at 29th and 49th place. U.S. General Motors was placed at the 88th spot. (Yonhap)

Automobile enthusiasts have descended upon Washington for the Auto Show starting today to preview the newest models and advancements in the industry. While many will attend to preview the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 or the historic GM Futurliner No. 10, others will join policymakers to discuss important issues facing the U.S. auto sector. Essential to the continued growth of the auto industry, and a topic that should be addressed during these discussions, is access to domestic minerals and metals that make up nearly every component of vehicles.
From aluminum frames to lithium-ion batteries in hybrids, minerals and metals are the foundational components that make up the most basic to the most advanced vehicles manufactured today. Copper, for example, is a crucial building block for air-conditioning systems and radiators. Beryllium is essential for creating airbags, and boron, borate and borax play central roles in hundreds of glass parts like windshields and windows. Without these materials, the basic structure of a car today would not exist.
But due to an inefficient domestic mine permitting process, the United States remains more than 50 percent import-dependent on 40 key mineral commodities — including copper and zinc, which make up electric parts, and platinum and palladium, which comprises catalytic converters — according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As the process stands, it can take seven to 10 years for a new mine to be approved in the United States — compared to countries like Canada and Australia, where mines have comparable environmental regulations, but the permitting process takes just two to three years on average. If the United States is to remain economically competitive, this domestic minerals policy must change.

Since 2009, the Obama administration issued roughly 5.5 million work permits to non-citizens beyond what Congress has authorized, according to recently-released documents that critics of U.S. policy say reveals a "shadow" or "parallel" immigration system stifling wages and taking jobs from Americans.
The information was obtained by the conservative-leaning Center for Immigration Studies through a Freedom of Information Act request and has prompted Alabama GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions to call for an investigation.
"This request has unearthed the operation of a shadow immigration system previously unknown to the American public," said Sessions, one of Capitol Hill's most outspoken critics of President Obama's immigration policy. "A full investigation is warranted."
Congress authorized an estimated 5 million green cards and 3.5 million guest worker permits during the 2009-2014 period, in additional to the 5.5 million issued additionally by administration action, a Senate staffer said Wednesday.

It is not clear what the two disagreed over.

Yesterday, the PSL truther and general of the “Food Babe Army” launched an assault on General Mills and Kellogg’s over a preservative called Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). The chemical keeps cereals like Rice Krispies fresh for longer on the shelf, but has been banned in many parts of the world for having wreaked havoc during animal testing.
When Ms. Hari initially reached out to General Mills a few weeks back, they told her not to sweat it, and that BHT was FDA-approved. So she launched a petition yesterday shortly before noon to have BHT removed from all General Mills and Kellogg’s products.
Only a few hours later, when the petition had racked up about 17,000 signatures, General Mills started sending out this exact message to anyone who tweeted at them about BHT:

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan has warned against indirect U.S. attempts to include South Korea in its missile defense system, which is widely believed to be aimed at containing Beijing.
The U.S. Forces Korea wants to deploy the so-called Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, which forms the core of Washington's global missile defense.
Chang was speaking at a South Korea-China defense ministers meeting in Seoul on Wednesday.

But a ministry spokesman said Chang "virtually accepted" joint annual South Korea-U.S. military exercises, which regularly provoke the ire of North Korea.

The matter was not originally on the agenda.
But Defense Minister Han Min-koo said the U.S. has made no decision or held formal talks with Seoul about the deployment, and even if it did it would not target China but only provide a defense against the North's ballistic missiles, the spokesman added.

It was touching to see Narendra Modi and Barack Obama, the leaders of the world's two largest democracies, together in India. They did not stand stiffly on ceremony, as you would expect of two leaders, especially during the pomp and circumstance of great state occasions.
India's prime minister dispensed with protocol to turn up to greet the US president on his arrival at the airport in Delhi. The two men hugged and joked freely together, as if long lost brothers. The words "lovefest" and "bromance" come to mind.
It was a refreshing change from the contempt that Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger showed a generation ago for Indira Gandhi's India, or indeed from the well-mannered correctness of previous prime minister Manmohan Singh in meeting previous US presidents.
The warmth of their encounters inevitably prompts a question about whether a more substantial diplomatic démarche is about to happen. Is Delhi going to abandon its long-standing non-alignment to join Washington in a crusade of the democracies, with China in the opposition camp?
More than 55 years ago, John F. Kennedy, a junior senator from Massachusetts, saw the newly independent India and Communist China as engaged in "a struggle for the economic and political leadership of the East, for the respect of all Asia, for the opportunity to demonstrate whose way of life is the better". He regarded it as vital for India to win that contest. Kennedy became president, and India assumed higher importance in Washington.
Better not get carried away: Obama is in the final two years of his presidency, and the Republicans are out to get him.
Friends can speak freely to friends. Obama offered a list of important issues for India, including encouraging democratic ideals, combating climate change, empowering women and girls, promoting religious and racial tolerance, and improving prospects for young people.
Obama's decision to leave India early to pay his respects to the new Saudi Arabian King Salman was a reminder that India's friendship is but one the US has to cultivate.

Yet the exodus has been far more extreme than that census data suggests, since there were around 20,500 arrivals in Vancouver from Hong Kong in the same period.
In other words, about 33,000 Hongkongers departed Vancouver in those 15 years (including deaths). What’s more, arrivals are now a mere trickle - in 2013, there were only 383 new Hong Kong immigrants for all of British Columbia..

On Monday, I read about a Syrian woman who was accused by ISIS of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning. The barbarians carried out the punishment until they thought she was dead. She miraculously survived and attempted to flee. As one of the savages turned to shoot her, an Islamist jurist intervened and declared that it was God’s will and let her go. This was an anomaly.
On Tuesday, I read about a Syrian man that ISIS threw off the roof of a building for being a homosexual. He too survived his initial punishment. But rather than invoke God’s will, the cheering mob of barbarians waiting for him on the ground proceeded to stone him to death.
Shortly thereafter, we learned that ISIS burned alive the Jordanian pilot being held captive. And while the civilized world experienced feelings of disgust, sadness, and anger, the animals responsible for the atrocity set up movie screens across the city for cheering crowds to view and celebrate.
Civilized human beings are incapable of fathoming these atrocities. Some of us, however, are wondering why the Commander-in-Chief of the world’s policemen (formerly known as the United States military) has enabled this cancer to metastasize, and now is allowing the violence to occur over and over again with little intervention.
Where is civilized man in response to terrorist brutalities and violence not seen since the Holocaust? Michelle Obama’s reaction to the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian girls by Boko Haram was to promote a photo of herself holding a sign with the tweet #BringBackOurGirls. ISIS found this so amusing that it photo-shopped the image and retweeted the photo with Michelle holding a sign that read #BringBackOurHumvees. (ISIS was making fun of their successful seizure of a shipment of U.S. Humvees in Iraq.)
Iraq is the country that Obama handed over to ISIS and Iran to fight over. In doing so, he abandoned the Iraqi people who had helped us win that war before he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Thomas Joscelyn observed that ISIS’
mass executions of Iraqi soldiers undoubtedly helped convince Iraqi forces to retreat form the fight during the summer of 2014, when the Islamic State overran Mosul and other areas. The result was that the jihadists got stronger – until, that is, the U.S. and its allies decided they had to act.
Joscelyn observed that while Obama’s air strikes will not defeat ISIS, ISIS uses these grotesque executions to scare off coalition participants. Joscelyn also observed that the “sadistic videos” might actually backfire in terms of garnering support for their cause.
But is it possible that these videos -- of beheadings, stonings, tossing people off of buildings, and burning prisoners alive -- will have an anesthetic effect as well? Will those of us in the civilized world become numb to these horrific acts and human suffering that the wicked cause?
For decades after the Holocaust the phrase “Never again!” emanated from the lips of people of nations all over the world. Seventy years after the liberation of Auschwitz, cries of “Go back to the Ovens!” “Hitler was right!” and “Death to Jews!” are commonplace on the streets of the world’s most civilized cities from London and Paris to Sydney and New York.

A growing number of top Democrats plan to skip next month's Capitol Hill speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Reps. James Clyburn (S.C.), the third-ranking House Democrat, and Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.), chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), are just the latest lawmakers to indicate they won't attend the March 3 address before a rare joint session of Congress.

The latest valuation for Ant Financial boosted Ma’s fortune by about $10 billion to $36.4 billion as of Friday in New York, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, overtaking Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos. The new billionaires from the bigger valuation include the e-commerce giant’s chief executive officer Jonathan Lu and chief People Officer Lucy Peng.

Simon and Honey Gould, married for more than 20 years and with two children, live a seemingly peaceful life in their handsome five-bedroom house in a quiet British suburb.

As if to corroborate more than a year’s worth of reports linking America’s artificially low unemployment rate with a massive drop in the number of people looking for work, January’s unemployment numbers are out — and they show that when one trend reverses, the other must necessarily follow.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government’s official unemployment rate climbed from 5.6 percent in December to 5.7 percent in January.
At the same time, the labor participation rate — that is, the percentage of people seeking employment among all whom the government considers eligible — rose from 62.7 percent in December to 62.9 percent in January.
Beginning in mid-2012, the BLS’s unemployment figure had declined slowly but steadily — much to the delight of the Obama administration and its narrative of economic recovery — even as the number of people admitting they’d given up looking for work climbed. By December of last year, 92,898,000 Americans over the age of 15 had given up on looking for work. The population of the U.S. is approximately 320 million.

The United States is pressing Cuba to allow the opening of its embassy in Havana by April, U.S. officials told Reuters, despite the Communist island's demand that it first be removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.
A refusal by Cuba to allow the United States to quickly establish an official embassy for the first time in half a century could complicate talks between the Cold War foes, reflecting enduring mistrust as they move to end decades of confrontation.
It would also mark the first major setback since President Barack Obama's historic shift in Cuba policy in December, suggesting one of the biggest foreign policy moves of his administration is struggling to achieve even its first goal.
Striking Cuba from the terrorism list could take until June or longer, although the White House is pushing officials to move quickly, said two U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the State Department's review to take Cuba off the list.
Washington is eager to re-establish diplomatic ties before a regional summit in Panama in April, when Obama will meet Cuban leader Raul Castro for the first time since 2013, the officials said.

A shocking report from the British government has concluded that a borough council in the city of Rotherham was “not fit for purpose” because it apparently covered up years of assaults by Muslim Pakistani gangs on hundreds of children, mostly young white females.

North Korea has boosted biochemical warfare drills as part of its regular winter exercises, intelligence agencies here believe.
"Military intelligence believes that the North has carried out at least a dozen massive biochemical drills since late last year," a senior South Korean official said Thursday.
"We believe that could pose a real threat."
The North has often staged small-scale biochemical warfare drills, chiefly in summer, but not in winter when strong winds could potentially wreak havoc with any hazardous substances that escape into the air.
"These are clearly offensive drills planning a biochemical attack," a military officer here said.
Soldiers frequently practice firing multiple rocket launchers wearing gas masks.

Leading members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) are lining up to skip a coming speech by the prime minister of Israel.
Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the civil rights icon, and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), the chairman of the CBC, said they won't attend Benjamin Netanyahu's March 3 speech before Congress to protest Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) decision to invite the prime minister without first consulting President Obama and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill.
Butterfield said that move marked an "unprecedented overreach of the Speaker’s authority" that "goes beyond the traditions of his office."
"It is baffling that Speaker Boehner, who incessantly proclaims executive overreach by the president, would buck long standing diplomatic protocol to extend such an invitation," Butterfield said in a statement.
"His actions unnecessarily politicize our steadfast relationship with Israel, and potentially subvert U.S. foreign policy," he added. "The United States is and will remain Israel’s strongest ally. However, I refuse to be a part of a political stunt aimed at undercutting President Obama.”
In an interview with the Associated Press, Lewis delivered a similar message.

A driver on a viaduct recorded video footage of a plane plummeting from the sky in Taiwan and crashing into a river.
In the video dated Wednesday Feb. 4 at 11:07 a.m., the plane appears from the west and drops at a steep angle toward the driver. Part of the plane's left wing then clips the viaduct before crashing into the Keelung River
BBC news confirmed the plane was a TransAsia Airways plane headed to Kinmen islands off the coast of Xiamen, China. The plane plunged into the river carrying 53 passengers and five flight attendants. The accident killed at least 31 as of Thursday morning.

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams admitted Wednesday he was not aboard a helicopter hit and forced down by RPG fire during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, a false claim that has been repeated by the network for years.

Obama had a more non-denominational message for the audience that also included prominent leaders of non-Christian faiths. The president said that while religion is a source for good around the world, people of all faiths have been willing to "hijack religion for their own murderous ends."

The depravity of the Islamic State terror group in Syria and Iraq plumbed new levels yesterday as it released a video showing Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh being burned alive while locked in a cage.
The chilling footage, entitled 'Healing the Believers' Chests', shows the captured airman wearing an orange jumpsuit and seemingly doused in fuel as a trail of petrol leading up to the iron bars of the cage is seen being set alight.
Flames are seen quickly spreading across the dirt to the cage, where they completely engulf the helpless pilot in images that are far too distressing to publish. Extremists pour debris, including broken masonry, over the cage, which is then flattened by a bulldozer.
The release of the expertly-edited video - which represents a new level of barbarity from a group notorious for its savagery - has prompted Jordan to announce it would execute all six prisoners convicted of association with ISIS at dawn today, which is usually at 6.40am (4.40am GMT).
Within an hour of the 22-minute-long video's publication, Jordan reportedly moved ISIS-linked prisoners to a jail in the south of the country which is usually used for state executions.

NATO TO DEPLOY UNITS IN 6 EU NATIONS TO COMBAT THE RISE OF THE PUTIN
NATO said Friday it will deploy small units in six eastern European nations to help coordinate a spearhead force set up in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the units in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania will be the first of their kind there.
Defense ministers from the 28-nation military alliance will discuss the full force, which can react quickly to any hotspots in Europe, when they meet on Feb. 5.
Stoltenberg said countries responsible for providing the several thousand troops should be known next week. Norway, Germany and the Netherlands are ready to contribute.
The forward units will comprise a few dozen troops only. They will plan and organize military exercises, and provide command and control for any reinforcements the force might require.

The Japanese public, usually isolated both geographically and politically from overseas conflicts, have been left reeling by the round-the-clock news coverage of the crisis and frightened that it could signal more violence against nationals overseas.

The South Korean Navy on Sunday inaugurated a submarine command as part of efforts to bolster its underwater capabilities and combat readiness against North Korea.
The fleet of the command, based in the southern port city of Jinhae and led by a rear admiral, is composed of 13 submarines under the Ninth Submarine Flotilla, the Navy said in a statement.
The Navy operates nine 1,200-ton submarines and four 1,800-ton subs, while planning to add five more 1,800-ton submarines to be built by 2019. In addition, it plans to deploy nine 3,000-ton submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles, starting in 2020.
The launch made South Korea, which commissioned its first submarine from Germany in 1992, the sixth nation in the world with a submarine command after the United States, Japan, France, Britain and India.

Republicans are toying with the idea of bringing back a plan from Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to pay for America’s highways with an expansion of oil and gas drilling offshore and on federal land.
With conservatives ruling out an increase in the federal gas tax, Republicans are casting around for another way to shore up highway funding before it expires in May.

One idea being floated is Boehner’s drilling-for-roads swap, which failed to gain traction in the past amid opposition from Democrats.
“I think it’s a great idea to increase domestic energy and rebuild America’s infrastructure,” said Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. “It’s something we should absolutely explore.”
“It’s certainly something worth talking about,” said Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah) chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, which has responsibility over federal land and the country’s outer continental shelf.
Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said the Speaker has an “open mind” about using drilling funds for roads, after having all but ruled it out last year, two years after he was one of the main proponents.
While the proposal fits neatly into the Republican priorities of increasing domestic energy production and building infrastructure, transportation advocates argue it wouldn’t bring in anywhere near the money needed for the nation’s highways.
Advocates estimate that the federal government needs to spend about $15 billion more each year simply to maintain the current highway system, let alone improve it.
Fuel taxes of 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel are the main sources of funding for the Highway Trust Fund. Those taxes haven’t been raised in more than two decades, and their buying power has declined significantly as roads have deteriorated.

Members of Congress embarked on the most privately funded trips last year since the practice was curtailed in response to a high-profile lobbying scandal, and Democratic lawmakers topped the list, Roll Call reports.
Private groups financed 1,942 trips—some domestic and others overseas—for lawmakers and their staffs last year, which cost a total of $5.1 million. Congress put more restrictions in place on such trips in 2007 after lobbyist Jack Abramoff was convicted of bribing public officials.
Rep. Mike McIntyre (D., N.C.), who retired last year, accepted the most trips with a total cost of $67,295:
In February 2014, five weeks after announcing his plans to end his congressional career, McIntyre took the most expensive trip on record since the year 2000. He traveled to the southern coast of Australia with his wife, Dee McIntyre, for an eight-day trip sponsored by the Australian defense industry association Defence Teaming Centre Inc. The nine-term Blue Dog moderate was invited as a member of the House Armed Services Committee “to speak on the U.S. pivot to Asia-Pacific and opportunities arising for defence industry in South Australia,” according to forms filed with the House Ethics Committee.
McIntyre’s itinerary included shipyard and submarine tours, meetings with industry executives and government officials, plus a South Australian wine industry brief. The price tag for the stay in Adelaide, including meals and a room at the city’s five-star Hilton hotel, was $49,635.
Rep. David E. Price, D-N.C., ranked second, accepting $53,939 worth of travel. As a leader of the House Democracy Partnership, a bipartisan commission that counsels budding democracies on building parliamentary infrastructure, Price’s travels over the course of his 14 terms in Congress have taken him to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Self-proclaimed Islamic State militants have confirmed that they killed Japanese hostage Kenji Goto.
The militants said in an Internet radio broadcast on Sunday that they killed the second Japanese hostage after the deadline expired.
They also stated they released a video of Goto's death through their public relations division, al-Furqan.
They added they killed Goto because Japan took part in the "crusade" against Islam.
Islamic State militants are hostile to the US-led coalition engaged in the military campaign against the group.
They call the coalition, which includes European and Middle East countries, a "crusade."
They also blame Japan in connection with its humanitarian aid to the Middle East. They claim the country provided 100 million dollars to destroy Muslim homes.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday beheaded a convicted murderer, bringing to five the number of people executed since new King Salman took office, continuing the kingdom's use of the harshest punishment.
Abdelrahman al-Jahni, a Saudi, was convicted of shooting another man dead during a dispute, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
The sentence was carried out in the holy city of Medina.
According to an AFP tally, Jahni is the latest of 17 locals and foreigners to be executed this year.
Five have been beheaded since King Salman took office on January 23 after the death of his predecessor Abdullah.
The interior ministry says the death penalty in such cases reflects the government's commitment to "maintaining security, realising justice".

Current and former federal air marshals allege that the Transportation Security Administration intentionally hid embarrassing information about supervisors’ misconduct and targeted employees who sought to expose the truth.
The allegations revolve around TSA management’s overuse of an agency-specific designation called Sensitive Security Information (SSI). Though it is not classified, information deemed SSI is supposed to be kept from the public because it would harm transportation security. The marshals claim that the TSA has repeatedly abused the SSI classification, even going so far as to use it on fictitious information, in an effort to keep the public in the dark.
One current federal air marshal, whose name has been withheld for fear of retaliation, asserts that the TSA has repeatedly sought to silence its employees.
