AMAZON TO JOIN THE SMARTPHONE BANDWAGON DEVELOPERS–INTRODUCES FIREFLY -
Amazon has introduced a new smartphone with audio and object recognition technology that seeks to make it easier for consumers to locate and purchase products and services from the nation's largest e-commerce company.
The new Fire phone also adds such features as the ability to render images in 3D.
The Fire phone doesn't differ much from other smartphones on the market and shares many characteristics found in other Amazon devices.
Amazon's new Firefly feature allows users to take a photo of an object, such as a toaster or a soup can, and get more information about it, including a way to purchase it through Amazon. Many of the new features have been available elsewhere as separate apps. Sony, for instance, has a tool for getting information over the internet by snapping a bar code or a landmark. Firefly goes further, though, by incorporating audio recognition…..
…Prices are comparable to other leading high-end phones, but the Fire will have double the storage. It will cost $200 for a base model with 32 gigabytes and $300 for 64 gigabytes. Both require two-year service contracts. Without contracts, they will cost $650 and $750.

A SOUTH KOREAN SARGEANT SERVING HIS DUTY KILLS 5 SOUTH KOREAN SOLDIERS IN GOSEONG, GANGWAN PROVINCE NEAR THE NORTH KOREAN BORDER
Five soldiers were killed and five others wounded after a South Korean soldier went on a shooting spree at a general outpost in the country's border town with North Korea on Saturday, military officers said.
According to the military, an unidentified South Korean sergeant serving his duty with an Army unit in this eastern town of Goseong, Gangwon Province, went on a shooting rampage at about 8:15 p.m., which led to the casualties.
The suspect was on the loose with a gun and ammunition, prompting the military to launch an operation to catch him, the military said.
The unit is near the border town with North Korea, but the incident has nothing to do with the communist country, according to Army officers.

A South Korean soldier on Saturday shot and killed five members of his own unit at a guard post on the border with North Korea, an army spokesman said.
The conscript soldier, who also injured five others during the shooting, is believed to be on the run carrying a firearm and live ammunitions.
The exact circumstances of the incident at the remote guard post were not immediately clear and the official could not provide further details, although there was no indication that North Korea was involved in the incident.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said there was an operation to capture the conscript late on Saturday.
The incident took place in the Goseong county, a mountainous region that borders the North on the eastern end of the peninsula.

Chinese police shot dead 13 people in the restive Xinjiang region after they drove into a police building and set off an explosion on Saturday, regional authorities said.
Three police officers were also injured in the attack.
The Tianshan website said that no civilians were hurt in the attack in Kashgar prefecture in Xinjiang’s southwest.
"Today thugs crashed a car into the public security building of Kargilik county in Xinjiang's Kashgar prefecture and set off an explosion. Police took decisive action and shot dead 13 thugs," the official Tianshan regional government website reported.
It was the latest in a series of attacks pointing to growing unrest in the sprawling region of Xinjiang. The vast and resource-rich region in China's far west is home to the mainly Muslim Uighur ethnic minority, where the majority want more independence from Beijing.
The region has faced a series of violent attacks in recent years. Last month, a market bombing killed 43 people in Xinjiang’s capital, Urumqi. Chinese authorities have blamed the attacks on extremists bent on overthrowing Beijing’s rule.

A report that scientists are calling one of the most comprehensive studies of great white sharks finds their numbers are surging in the ocean off the Eastern U.S. and Canada after decades of decline.
The study by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists, published this month in the journal PLOS ONE, says the population of the notoriously elusive fish has climbed since about 2000 in the western North Atlantic.
The scientists behind the study attribute the resurgence to conservation efforts, such as a federal 1997 act that prevented hunting of great whites, and greater availability of prey. The species is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
“The species appears to be recovering,” said Cami McCandless, one of the authors. “This tells us the management tools appear to be working.”

The government’s bid to cancel the Washington Redskin’s trademark has rekindled long-smoldering debate over whether the team’s name is a racial slur, and is testing an increasingly strained relationship between the league and federal lawmakers.
On issues ranging from drug testing and concussions to broadcast blackouts and the league’s tax-exempt status, the NFL has repeatedly attracted negative attention from Congress in recent years.
The league and the Redskins themselves have bolstered their presence in Washington, adding lobbyists and pouring money into both sports safety programs and political coffers.
But decades have passed since Congress bestowed non-profit status and antitrust exemptions upon pro football. Once warm and welcoming, Capitol Hill might now feel to the NFL a little more like Lambeau Field on a frigid Sunday in November.
“I think that the NFL gets a lot of special privileges as a result of congressional enactments of the past,” Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) told The Hill. “I think we ought to ask them how they can countenance having one of their teams with a name that is openly racist.”
Calls to change the moniker of one of the NFL’s most storied franchises were getting louder, even before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office cancelled the trademark on the Washington Redskins name last Wednesday on grounds that it is disparaging to Native Americans.

The Obama administration says it is “surging” resources to confront the flood of illegal unaccompanied minors and family units coming across the southern border.
On the enforcement side, the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday it is stepping up enforcement resources to detain more adults with children and increase immigration court hearing capacity as a way to get illegal immigrants from Central America who are ordered removed back to their home countries more “quickly.”
DHS Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters on a conference call Friday afternoon that since October, 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended along the southwest border as of June 15, and approximately 39,000 adults with children have been apprehended along the border as of the end of May.
House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte quickly criticized the Obama plan to confront the border crisis as “smoke and mirrors.”
“President Obama’s plan to deal with the crisis at the border created by his administration’s bad immigration policies is nothing but smoke and mirrors,” the Virginia Republican said Friday after the announcement.
“Many of the children, teenagers, and adults arriving at the border are able to game our asylum and immigration laws because the Obama Administration has severely weakened them and many thousands have already been released into the interior of the United States. What does President Obama plan to do with those who have already been released from custody?” he rhetorically asked.
Administration officials were unable to tell reporters Friday how many illegal immigrants released into the country with notices to appear had actually returned for their immigration hearings.

The United States on Thursday cut aid to Uganda, imposed visa restrictions and canceled a regional military exercise in response to a Ugandan law that imposes harsh penalties on homosexuality.
The White House said in a statement the measures were intended to "reinforce our support for human rights of all Ugandans regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."
Homosexuality is taboo in most African countries and illegal in 37, including in Uganda where it has been a crime since British rule.
Uganda's new law, signed by President Yoweri Museveni in February, imposes jail terms of up to life for "aggravated homosexuality" which includes homosexual sex with a minor or while HIV-positive.
Widely condemned by donor countries, the law also criminalizes lesbianism for the first time and makes it a crime to help individuals engage in homosexual acts.
Western donors, including the United States, had halted or re-directed about $118 million in aid to the east African nation's economy before Thursday's announcement.

Americans' confidence in the news media has tumbled to fresh lows -- and it doesn't much matter whether the source is newspapers, television or the Internet.
A Gallup poll released Thursday found the level of faith in each of three major news media platforms -- television news, newspapers, and news on the Internet -- is at or tied with record lows, extending a longstanding trend
Confidence in US newspapers was marginally better than rival media, but dropped to 22 percent in the June 5-8 survey -- declining more than half from a 1979 peak of 51 percent.
For television news, the percentage of respondents with a good deal of confidence was 19 percent, extending the decline from its 1993 peak at 46 percent.
Just 18 percent said they trusted online news, which compares with 21 percent in the only prior Gallup survey in 1999.
Those identifying themselves as liberals had slightly more confidence in newspapers, while conservatives had a higher level of trust in TV news.

Glenn Beck joined Megyn Kelly on “The Kelly File” Wednesday to discuss the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s “insane” decision to strip the Washington Redskins organization of its trademarks.
Kelly opened the segment by playing a clip of Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) celebrating the fact that the U.S. government cancelled the Redskins trademark registrations on the Senate floor.
“First of all, I feel sorry for Harry Reid, and I mean this sincerely,” Beck reacted. “Harry is, I’m sure, a nice guy. I don’t know him, but I really think there is something wrong with him. I think he’s slipped or something — I don’t understand it.”
Beck went on to argue that the U.S. patent system — the right of people to “keep” their ideas — is an important “American idea.”
“When the government can come in and say, ‘You know what, I don’t like that. You don’t get to keep that. I’m sorry, we can take your $2 billion or $3 billion business and just flush it down the toilet because we’ve decided… we don’t like that.’ I don’t even understand that, I really don’t,” he added.
The media mogul also questioned why the nation’s lawmakers are focusing on the name of an NFL team when the “Middle East is on fire” and the country is dealing with a serious crisis on the U.S. border, among other very important issues.

South Korea will develop a high-altitude missile to intercept North Korean ballistic missiles with a budget of W1 trillion (US$1=W1,017).
The country also hopes to operate five surveillance satellites by 2025 to monitor the whole of North Korea at two-hour intervals. Currently reconnaissance satellites only fly over the North every eight to 12 hours.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration made the announcement Wednesday after a session of the Defense Project Promotion Committee chaired by Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin.
The new missile will intercept missiles at an altitude of over 40 to 60 km, even higher than the U.S.' PAC-3, which intercepts them at 15-20 km.
Military authorities made the decision to escape pressure to join the U.S.-led missile defense system, which chiefly aims to check China's growing military presence.

The seasonally-adjusted price index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs hit an all-time high in May, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
In January 1967, when the BLS started tracking this measure, the index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs was 38.1. As of last May, it was 234.572. By this January, it hit 240.006. By April, it hit 249.362. And, in May, it climbed to a record 252.832.
“The index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs has risen 7.7 percent over the span [last year],” says the BLS. “The index for food at home increased 0.7 percent, its largest increase since July 2011. Five of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased in May. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rose 1.4 percent in May after a 1.5 increase in April, with virtually all its major components increasing,” BLS states.
In addition to this food index, the price for fresh whole chickens hit its all-time high in the United States in May.
In January 1980, when the BLS started tracking the price of this commodity, fresh whole chickens cost $0.70 per pound. By this May 2014, fresh whole chickens cost $1.56 per pound.
A decade ago, in May 2004, a pound of fresh chicken cost $1.04. Since then, the price has gone up 50%.

Americans are increasingly developing a taste for the "beautiful game," at least when their own team is playing.
Monday night's World Cup match between the U.S. and Ghana drew 15.9 million viewers total between the two channels carrying the game, ESPN and Univision, according to preliminary overnight Nielsen ratings. The figure set World Cup viewership records for both networks.
The ratings trounced the audience for the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup finals on Friday, which attracted 6 million TV viewers. Perhaps more surprising, the viewership numbers for the soccer game had an admirable showing against Sunday's National Basketball Association finals game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat, which attracted 17.9 million viewers.

South Korea’s modernity, technological advancement and vibrant democracy are sources of pride for retired Army Col. Raymond Padilla, who fought fiercely against invading North Korean and Chinese troops during the 1950-53 Korean War.
But those features also remind him of the devastation of the war, bringing back dreadful memories of life-threatening moments on the battlefields, where he struggled for survival with his fellow U.S. and South Korean soldiers.
“This country was raped, ravaged and destroyed. How many buildings do you think I saw with roofs? What you have done is fantastic. It makes me proud because I wanted you to do this,” the veteran told The Korea Herald.
Padilla was in Seoul earlier this month to visit some of the battle sites including “Hill 296” south of Seoul, where he said he was born as a true soldier. He first arrived in the South in August 1950 as a private, less than a year after he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
“Absolutely, this (Korea) is my birthplace as a soldier. This has to be my birthplace,” said Padilla in a voice full of vigor that belied his age of 82. “What did I know when I first arrived here? I did not know anything, and then I saw the devastation (of the war).”

Border Patrol officials are swamped by the number of minors crossing illegally into the United States and frustrated that they can’t turn away known Mexican gang members.
Chris Cabrera, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council Local 3307 in the Rio Grande Valley, said that confirmed gang members in Mexico — including those from Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) — are coming into the country to be reunited with their families, National Review reported Friday.
“If he’s a confirmed gang member in his own country, why are we letting him in here? … I’ve heard people come in and say, ‘You’re going to let me go, just like you let my mother go, just like you let my sister go. You’re going to let me go as well, and the government’s going to take care of us,’” Mr. Cabrera told the magazine.
He said that the only way to solve the problem was to implement harsher restrictions on who can be allowed to cross.
“Until we start mandatory detentions, mandatory removals, I don’t think anything is going to change. As a matter of fact, I think it’s going to get worse,” he said, National Review reported.
Other Border Patrol officials said that officers must treat minors with gang-affiliated tattoos the same as anybody else wishing to cross the border.
“It’s upsetting that a lot of them are 16 pr 17 years old and a lot of them are not going to face deportation,” said Art Del Cueto, president of the National Border Patrol Council Local 2544 in Tucson, Ariz, National Review reported.
