NATO countries are staging massive air, land and sea exercises across Russia's northern borders this month in response to warnings from the Kremlin and strategic analysts that President Vladimir Putin's threats to use nuclear weapons are more than bluster.

The exercises in Estonia, Lithuania and Norway involve more than 21,000 troops and state-of-the-art military hardware. Coupled with U.S. training of Ukrainian forces and the recent activation of a 3,000-strong rapid-reaction force to defend Eastern Europe, they appear intended to send a message to Moscow that the alliance is ready to defend its new members in Russia's backyard.

Troops, trainers and readiness testers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have been bolstering defenses along what Eastern Europeans call the new Iron Curtain. Although it still divides East from West, this time there are former Soviet subjects on the western side of the ideological border……

Vietnam has carried out significant land reclamation at two sites in disputed South China Sea waters, recent satellite pictures show, but analysts say the scale of the work is dwarfed by that of China.

The images, taken late last month by DigitalGlobe and shown on the website of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), show land expansions at Sand Cay and West London Reef, both part of the Spratly Islands chain and occupied by Vietnam.

"Between August 2011 and February 2015 significant upgrades were made to (Sand Cay)," CSIS said, noting the island's land mass had expanded from 41,690 to 62,970 square meters.

Vietnam also appears to have added "defensive structures," including trenches and gun emplacements, it said.

At West Reef - which is part of the London Reefs group of western Spratly Islands - some 65,000 meters of land have been reclaimed with new structures, including a harbor, being added, it said.

The work appears to have begun in August 2012, CSIS said, long before Beijing launched a flurry of reclamation projects last year.

The Spratlys are considered a potential Asian flashpoint, and the United States and claimant nations have expressed alarm as China has embarked on massive and speedy reclamation activity.

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, locking it into disputes with several Southeast Asian neighbors. Its claims overlap those of Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan.

A Texas traffic cop saved untold lives Sunday night when he took down two heavily armed men bent on storming a building where a 'Draw the Prophet' Muhammad contest was taking place, killing both before they could make their way inside.

The police officer, who has not been identified by Garland Police Department officials, "probably saved lives," said police spokesman Joe Harn, who added that "his reaction, and his shooting with a pistol, he did a good job." 

Harn said the two suspects, believed to have driven some 1,100 miles from Phoenix to invade the contest at a suburban Dallas venue, shot assault rifles outside, wounding a security guard and hitting at least one police car. Local police, a SWAT team, FBI and ATF agents were on hand for the event, attended by 75 people, which authorities anticipated could anger Muslim hardliners. Authorities in Garland said the men -- wearing body armor -- drove up to the Curtis Culwell Center on Sunday night and began shooting at a security officer with assault rifles.

Two tweets apparently sent out prior to the shooting from two social media accounts linked to radical Islam seemed to foreshadow the attack. One, sent at 6:35 p.m., some 15 minutes before the attack, used the hashtag #texasattack. “May Allah accept us as mujahideen,” it said.

"We think [the suspects'] strategy was to get to the event center [and] into the event center," Harn said. "We were able to stop those men before they were able to... shoot anyone else."

But it was the unidentified Garland police officer, who spends most of his shift assigned to traffic duty, who killed both suspects, who were each dead at the scene.

"Sixty-nine churches and 11 homes were destroyed. That's a total of 80 Christian buildings within a few hours… Absolutely, it was premeditated. It was organized. It was shocking because systematically in a few hours churches were targeted and houses attacked, so it means that someone organized and executed this plan.

I tell our brothers and sisters that we don't wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities. We have to encourage ourselves because persecution is part of the life of the Church. There is no church that existed without persecution."

Not wanting to court danger, the Boca West Country Club has refused to host the Palm Beach Republican Party's "Lobsterfest" dinner that advertised controversial Islamic critic Geert Wilders as the keynote speaker. Geert was part of the Garland, Texas, cartoon contest that invited participants to draw the Prophet Muhammad. Islamic law prohibits any image of the prophet to ward off idol worship.

However, extremists have violently attacked or threatened with death anyone who has published a drawing or depiction of Muhammad over the years. The belief was what prompted extremists to attack the headquarters of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, where 12 staffers were gunned down.

Last week in Texas, in an attempt to fly directly in the face of that law, organizers put together a $10,000 Muhammad cartoon contest. The contest drew the attention of two gunmen who tried to kill participants with assault rifles. Police were able to thwart the attack and shot and killed the suspects. Not long after, ISIS announced that it was responsible for the attack.

As New Times reported on Thursday, Geert, a Dutch politician and known Islamic critic, was a key participant in the contest. Geert has been outspoken against the Qur'an, liking it to Mein Kampf and trying to have it banned in the Netherlands. His stance and beliefs have made him popular with the far-right, particularly in the United States. It's also made him a target of Islamic extremists.

The Republican chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi on Friday defended the pace of his panel’s year-old investigation into the 2012 terror attack and announced plans to interview three top aides to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., in a 15-page “Interim Progress Update” released on the one-year-anniversary of the committee’s creation, blamed the Obama administration for delays in the panel’s probe.

“It is difficult to conduct a fact-centric congressional investigation when the Administration impedes the Committee’s progress by repeatedly failing to answer the Committee’s requests or to provide information in a timely manner,” wrote the South Carolina Republican.

“The largest impediment to being able to write the final, definitive accounting of what happened before, during and after the terrorist attacks in Benghazi is the Executive Branch itself.”

But Gowdy, who also has asked Clinton to appear before his panel, credits his committee with uncovering thousands of new emails and documents related to the administration’s handling of the attack that left four Americans dead.

Gowdy also said the panel wants to interview at least 60 more current and former officials, including Clinton, Susan Rice, Patrick Kennedy and three of Clinton’s top aides during her tenure as secretary of State: Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan and Huma Abedin.

The missiles with a range of 100 kilometers are believed to have been modified from Chinese Silkworm missiles, they said.
The North's Korean Central News Agency also reported that leader Kim Jong-un observed an underwater test-fire of a submarine-launched ballistic missile. It did not specify the date and location of what could be the country's first test-fire of a ballistic missile from a submarine……

Taking vitamin D supplements has been found to aid weight loss in obese and overweight people, Italian researchers have found.

Scientists at the University of Milan estimate that in northern Italy, severe vitamin D deficiency ranges from six per cent in overweight people to 30 to 40 per cent in the morbidly obese.

Almost all obese subjects did not have a vitamin D level in the optimal range.

For the study they recruited 400 obese or overweight adults who were split into three groups - those who took no supplements, those who took 25,000 vitamin D units a month, and those who took 100,000.

All participants were put on the same balanced, low-calorie diet.

After six months, only those who took 100,000 units a month achieved optimal vitamin D status.

However, a significantly greater weight decrease and reduction in waist circumference was observed in both groups that took the supplements.

Korea and the Middle East may look like they have nothing in common.
On the surface, the two regions do not seem to have crossed paths as they have totally different economies, cultures and ideals. Above all, religion may be what divides the two. While the religious heritage of Korea derives mostly from Buddhism, Confucianism and more recently Christianity, the Middle East is deeply rooted in the Islamic teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Yet, scholars say the two sides’ cross-cultural relations date back to the seventh century ― the era of the Kingdom of Unified Silla in Korea and, in the Middle East, the Islamic Golden Age. This was when the Muslim world spanned from the Philippines in the East to the Iberian Peninsula in the West.
“Korea’s first encounter with Islam was purely commercial,” said Lee Hee-soo, Korea’s leading scholar of Islam culture, and professor at Hanyang University’s Department of Cultural Anthropology.
Muslim merchants and traders traveled via the Silk Road to China’s Tang-era capital of Changan, today’s Xian, with which the Unified Silla had close political and business ties, the scholar explained.
Commercial relations between the two eventually expanded into culture, arts, science and technology with both sides depicting each other in their poems and songs.

A mother is launching a legal battle for possession of her dead daughter’s frozen eggs so that she can become pregnant with her own grandchild.

In what may be the first case of its kind, the 59-year-old woman and her husband, 58, are challenging an independent regulator’s refusal to allow them to take the eggs to a US fertility treatment clinic.

The couple say it was the dying wish of their daughter, an only child who died of bowel cancer in her late twenties, that her eggs be fertilised by donor sperm and implanted into her own mother’s womb.

The daughter initially had her eggs frozen after being diagnosed with cancer in the hope that she herself could have children in the future. Her parents want to export the eggs to New York, where a clinic has indicated it is willing to provide treatment at an estimated cost of up to £60,000.

Dr Mohamed Taranissi, who runs the ARGC fertility clinic in London, said: “I have never heard of a surrogacy case involving a mother and her dead daughter’s eggs. It’s fair to say that this may be a world first.”

But the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has refused to issue a “special direction” allowing the eggs to be removed from storage in London and sent to the US. Its statutory approvals committee took the decision last year, saying there was insufficient evidence to show that the daughter wanted her mother to use donor sperm to carry her child.

The committee argued that there was no clear, written consent and it was entitled to use its discretion to refuse to issue a special direction, without which it would be unlawful for export of the eggs to go ahead.

In a little-noticed brief filed last summer, lawyers for the House of Representatives claimed that an SEC investigation of congressional insider trading should be blocked on principle, because lawmakers and their staff are constitutionally protected from such inquiries given the nature of their work.

The legal team led by Kerry W. Kircher, who was appointed House General Counsel by Speaker John Boehner in 2011, claimed that the insider trading probe violated the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branch.

Microsoft may have to rebrand its Skype video chat program after a European court ruled that the name is too similar to that of British broadcaster Sky.
Microsoft says it intends to appeal.

This is not the first time Sky has fought Microsoft over branding. Last year, Microsoft had to change the name of its cloud service, SkyDrive, after the High Court in London said the brand infringed Sky's trademark and that customers could confuse the product. Microsoft rebranded the service OneDrive.

But Sky does not want Microsoft to change the name of Skype, it wants to block registration of the name and logo in Europe. A Microsoft spokesperson told BBC News: "The case was not a legal challenge to Skype's use of the mark, it was only against the registration."

In a dramatic assessment of the domestic threat posed by the Islamic State, FBI Director James Comey said Thursday there are "hundreds, maybe thousands" of people across the country who are receiving recruitment overtures from the terrorist group or directives to attack the U.S.

Comey said the Islamic State, also known as ISIL, is leveraging social media in unprecedented ways through Twitter and other platforms, directing messages to the smartphones of "disturbed people'' who could be pushed to launch assaults on U.S. targets.

Debate has resurfaced over the possibility of South Korea’s nuclear armament as North Korea’s nuclear threat remains unabated with growing security rivalry in the region most recently stoked by Japan’s push for heavier armament.
Lingering doubts over the reliability of the U.S.’ nuclear umbrella has also added to the possibility that Seoul could seek a more viable way to bolster its self-defense capabilities to fend off Pyongyang’s security challenges, analysts said.
Charles Ferguson, head of the Federation of American Scientists, said in a recent report that the South could opt for nuclear armament should Japan acquire nuclear arms and should the North’s nuclear threats not be countered by the U.S.
“If the United States were perceived to not be able to reliably and credibly counter the threats posed by China and North Korea, prudent military planners in Japan and South Korea would want to take steps to have their own nuclear capabilities,” Ferguson said in the report.
“Finally, if Japan crosses the threshold to nuclear weapon acquisition, South Korea would feel compelled to follow suit. South Korean leaders would then not want to be vulnerable to both nuclear-armed North Korea and Japan.”
In the report, Ferguson also noted that Seoul could secure potential capabilities to produce dozens of nuclear warheads within five years, with “near-weapons-grade plutonium” from four pressurized heavy water reactors at its Wolseong power plant in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang province.

The federal government set a record tax haul in April, taking in nearly a half-trillion dollars in one month alone, according to Congressional Budget Office statistics released Thursday.

April is always a busy month with the tax deadline on April 15, but this year’s haul was historic, totaling $472 billion, far outstripping the previous monthly record, set last April, of $414 billion.

Spending, meanwhile, was a more modest $317 billion, leaving the government with a surplus for that one month of $155 billion — also a record.

South Korea on Thursday condemned as “historic distortion” an effort by Japan to register 19th century industrial facilities as U.N. World Heritage sites, urging full disclosure of Japan’s use of Korean forced labor.

Japan’s move to list the 23 industrial sites, many of them coal mines, shipyards and steel mills dating back to 1850, in a UNESCO program, has stoked anger in South Korea as another attempt to gloss over Japan’s brutal colonial and wartime past.

“Space and time continue. Japan is unable to deny (forced labor) existed, so it is trying to avoid it,” a South Korean foreign ministry official told a small group of Western media.

“It can possibly turn into another case of historic distortion,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Japan’s bid, and South Korea’s objection, are likely to further fuel diplomatic tension between the Asian neighbors, centered on issues stemming from Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945.

South Korea’s ties with Japan have long been marred by what Seoul sees as Japanese leaders’ reluctance to atone for the country’s wartime past, including a full recognition of its role in forcing Korean women into prostitution at military brothels.

The Conservatives will be the largest party after the General Election, according to an exit poll carried out for the major broadcasters.

The poll put the Conservatives on 316 seats, Labour on 239, the Scottish National Party on 58, the Liberal Democrats on 10 and UKIP on two.

The forecast contradicts months of pre-election polling showing the two largest parties neck and neck.

And the predicted Labour tally would represent the party's worst result since 1987.

David Blunkett, former Labour Home Secretary, said: "I'm going to tell you that I believe the opinion polls were wrong, the exit polls were right and that it is a very, very bad night for us."

ISIS appears to declare war on controversial blogger Pamela Geller on Tuesday in an ominous online message claiming it has fighters across America ready to attack "any target we desire."

The threat, posted on anonymous message board JustPasteIt, singles out Geller, who helped plan a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest that was attacked by two gunmen in Garland, Texas, over the weekend. ISIS claimed responsibility for the shooting early Tuesday, marking the first time the terror group called an American attack one of its own, though lawmakers believe the two men were influenced by the group, not guided directly by it.

"This is the textbook case of what we're most concerned about," Rep. Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told the Associated Press.

There are millions of people who come to the United States with little education, diminished language skills, and barely two nickels to rub together. Even so, they have made huge strides in America educationally and economically. Asians, for example, are often discriminated against in college admissions because they outperform all other ethnic groups. They are actually punished for their success.

African Americans receive a “bonus” of 230 points on their SAT scores. Hispanics receive a bonus of 185 points. “Asian Americans . . . are penalized by 50 points.”

Baltimore’s problem isn’t cash. Douglas Wilson explains:

“The inner-city pathologies that are on display in Baltimore right now are religious and cultural, not genetic or racial. We are observing one more failure of socialism, and not the failure of black people. . . . I recommend Theodore Dalrymple’s Life at the Bottom if you are up for a real eye-opener. The Baltimore riots do invite judgment, but make sure you triple-check the identity of the defendant. The defendant is leftism.”

Liberals are calling for an “uprising.” So who are they going to rise up against? The mayor is black. Police Commissioner Anthony Batts and Deputy Commissioner of Patrol Garnell Green are black. Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore City state’s attorney handling the Freddie Gray case, is black. Three of the six arrested officers are black. Baltimore is a majority African American city. Most people realize that emails and other digital communications they once considered private can now become part of their permanent record.

But even as they increasingly use apps that understand what they say, most people don’t realize that the words they speak are not so private anymore, either.

Top-secret documents from the archive of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show the National Security Agency can now automatically recognize the content within phone calls by creating rough transcripts and phonetic representations that can be easily searched and stored.

The documents show NSA analysts celebrating the development of what they called “Google for Voice” nearly a decade ago.

Though perfect transcription of natural conversation apparently remains the Intelligence Community’s “holy grail,” the Snowden documents describe extensive use of keyword searching as well as computer programs designed to analyze and “extract” the content of voice conversations, and even use sophisticated algorithms to flag conversations of interest.

The documents include vivid examples of the use of speech recognition in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in Latin America. But they leave unclear exactly how widely the spy agency uses this ability, particularly in programs that pick up considerable amounts of conversations that include people who live in or are citizens of the United States.

App developer Jang Tae-gwan said 70 to 80 percent of people who downloaded the app are in their teens. The app was designed to send a long comforting response to sentences such as "I'm lonely" or "I'm depressed."
Psychologists say the app's popularity reflects the difficulties young people experience in establishing and maintaining relationship with real human beings.
In a survey by Seoul National University in February, 58.2 percent of middle schoolers said they have unstable relationship with classmates, and one out of five were at risk of being bullied.
One youngster who enjoyed chatting with an imaginary friend said, "I would like to chat with my real friends on KakaoTalk (a messenger service app), but I can't because I'm all by myself."
Prof. Hwang Sang-min of Yonsei University, said, "People who feel lonely are desperate to find someone who sympathizes with them and reacts to what they say. It doesn't matter who talks to them -- they just want to hear something from anyone."

Chicago is the most segregated city in the United States, while also being one of the most diverse, according to a new analysis of U.S. Census Data.

How can that be possible?

Because “diversity” and “segregation” are two different things, when you look at them from a city-wide level and then the neighborhood level, writes Nate Silver, the founder and editor of the Five Thirty Eight blog.

“Chicago deserves its reputation as a segregated city,” Silver writes. “But it is also an extremely diverse city. And the difference between those terms — which are often misused and misunderstood–says a lot about how millions of American city dwellers live.”
