In an interview with the Washington Post, the newspaper that famously exposed the Watergate scandal during the Nixon years, the Prime Minister also rubbished suggestions the recent bushfires were linked to climate change.

Asked to expand on his argument, Mr Abbott said the former government made a whole lot of commitments, "which they scandalously failed to honour".

President Obama "has the responsibility" to stop deportations of illegal immigrants if Congress proves unable to pass a comprehensive immigration bill, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) argued in an interview published Friday.

"There are devastating effects if the Congress of the United States cannot enact comprehensive immigration reform – then the president of the United States has the responsibility to act to defend those immigrants which he says he wants to provide safety and justice for," Gutierrez told Salon.

In 2012, the Obama administration announced it would stop deporting some illegal immigrants who entered the United States as children under certain circumstances.

Merriam Webster defines “pederast” as “one who practices anal intercourse especially with a boy.” It defines “statutory rape” as “the crime of having sex with someone who is younger than an age that is specified by law.”

On Sept 30., the body of fallen U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier Tim McGill was escorted by his family and  fellow brothers in arms from Dover Air Force Base, Del.to his hometown in Ramsey, N.J.

The 30-year-old staff sergeant, a former Marine turned Green Beret, was killed on Sept, 21 during another Green-on-Blue attack, in which an Afghan Army National opened fire on McGill and three other soldiers during a weapons training exercise.

Tim McGill received a hero’s homecoming worthy of every fallen American soldier. I know because I was there. The unbelievable outpouring of support and respect for the McGill family and his unit was overwhelming and indescribable.

Thousands of residents lined the streets of Ramsey to pay their respects as McGill’s coffin was led under the largest U.S. flag I had ever seen was draped across the center of Main Street.  The sound of drums and bagpipes filled the air as hundreds of school children stood at attention holding American flags, silently saluting while soldiers, police and firefighters marched by.

From munitions to missiles, top officials of all four U.S. services on Wednesday told a congressional panel that continued forced spending cuts will bring “historic lows” that would seriously threaten the military’s readiness and capability.

Testifying before the Tactical and Land Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, the officials repeatedly warned about the effects of sequestration in fiscal 2014, stressing that the instability and uncertainty of the cuts make it impossible to plan for new weapons, ships, planes and other hardware, and maintenance is being deferred on the military’s current fleet, they said.

They did not mince words. Heidi Shyu, the Army’s assistant secretary for acquisition, logistics and technology, called the continued cuts “devastating.”

“The prospect of sequestration-level reductions through FY 2021 threatens to lower Army investment in soldier equipment to historic lows as a result of steep and sudden reductions required under the current law caps,”…..

….The purchase of 12 Apache helicopters would also be canceled – eight were already canceled in the past fiscal year – and 11 Chinook helicopters would not be bought, which would expose the Army to violation of a procurement contract at a cost of $77 million in liability expenses and an eventual cost increase of $1.4 billion.

In the 2013 fiscal year, Shyu said sequestration already caused 22,000 Army workers to be furloughed and about 2,600 civilian and contract personnel to be released. Maintenance was deferred on 172 planes, more than 900 vehicles, nearly 2,000 weapons and more than 10,000 pieces of communications equipment. Shyu estimated the deferred costs totaled $73 million……

If computer glitches are not enough of a problem, President Obama's healthcare law also has a legal glitch that critics say could cause it to unravel in more than half the nation.

The Affordable Care Act proposes to make health insurance affordable to millions of low-income Americans by offering them tax credits to help cover the cost. To receive the credit, the law twice says they must buy insurance "through an exchange established by the state."

But 36 states have decided against opening exchanges for now. Although the law permits the federal government to open exchanges instead, it does not say tax credits may be given to those who buy insurance through a federally run exchange.

Apparently no one noticed this when the long and complicated bill worked its way through the House and Senate. Last year, however, the Internal Revenue Service tried to remedy it by putting out a regulation that redefined "exchange" to include a "federally facilitated exchange." This is "consistent with the language, purpose and structure … of the act as a whole," the Treasury Department said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a deal to begin long term negotiations that would eliminate Assad's stocks of chemical weapons. Negotiations are to begin late next month in Geneva. But this deal -- which Putin and his pal Assad put together -- will take many months if not years to achieve -- as Assad proceeds with his deadly suppression of Syria's rebellion.

Assad has resumed bombing the civilian population in urban centers, and has been blocking food supplies in an attempt to starve his people in a brutal effort to put down Syria's rebel uprising once and for all.

The deal that was so eagerly embraced by Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry is accomplishing just what Russia and Assad wanted: time to finish their evil deeds without a peep from Washington.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton turned the tables on a heckler Wednesday, in an effort to make a point about the need to find common ground to solve the nation’s problems.

During a speech at the University at Buffalo, Clinton first ignored the man’s shouts as she spoke of Buffalo as a model for problem-solving through cooperation.

“Because we can’t move from crisis to crisis, we have to be willing to come together as citizens to focus on the kind of future we want,” she said. As the shouts grew louder from an upper section of bleachers, she added, “which doesn’t include yelling. It includes sitting down and talking.”

The 6,500 people in attendance reacted with a sustained standing ovation as the heckler was led out.

Clinton spoke for about 30 minutes before taking audience questions, referring to her time representing New York in the U.S. Senate to illustrate a national strategy for advancing the economy. She said long-term investments she helped facilitate in technology, the arts and Buffalo’s waterfront are now starting to pay off for the region.

“That is exactly what we need to be doing,” she said, “in Buffalo, in New York, in America”

During the question-and-answer session, the former first lady deflected the inevitable question about whether she’d run for president by saying she hoped whoever ran would be able to “isolate the extreme voices” and allow the majority of people to be heard.

France’s top tier football clubs will go on strike at the end of November in an act of protest against the government’s plans to impose a 75 percent tax on earnings over one million euros, the country’s Union of Professional Football Clubs (UCPF) said on Thursday.

"There will be a weekend without a game at the end of the month (of November)," Jean-Pierre Louvel, the UCPF president, told a news conference. “People will be welcome in our stadiums, but there will be no games.''

The strike will affect Ligue 1 and 2 matches from November 29 to December 2.

The UCPF announced they were considering such a move earlier in the week, when they threatened to boycott this weekend’s matches.

Senate majority leader Harry Reid says that "Everybody" is "willing to pay more" taxes. He said so in an interview with a Nevada Public Radio host.

“The only people who feel there shouldn’t be more coming in to the federal government from the rich people are the Republicans in the Congress,” Reid told the radio host, according to Roll Call. “Everybody else, including the rich people, are willing to pay more. They want to pay more.”

Reid rebuked the Nevada Public Radio host when he was asked what Republicans would have to concede to get Medicare and Social Security cuts on the table.

“You keep talking about Medicare and Social Security. Get something else in your brain. Stop talking about that. That is not going to happen this time. There is not going to be a grand bargain,” Reid said. “What we need to do is have Murray and her counterpart in the House, Ryan, work together to come up with something to get out of this senseless sequestration and start the budgeting process so that we can do normal appropriation bills.”

Reid said Republicans would have to agree to more tax revenue to get anywhere near a bigger deal.

“They have their mind set on doing nothing, nothing more on revenue, and until they get off that kick, there’s not going to be a grand bargain on — there’s not going to be a small bargain,” Reid said. “We’re just going to have to do something to work our way through sequestration.”

Former Army leaders on Tuesday lamented the loss of a core defense constituency on Capitol Hill and said the political divisions that led to the recent government shutdown and sequester cuts bodes poorly for the military as it moves to rebuild active duty and reserve forces after 12 years of war.

"I grew up in an era when Congress had a bipartisan consensus on the military," retired Lt. Gen. Dave Barno told listeners at a presentation on the National Guard during the Association of the U.S. Army conference in Washington D.C. "That era is now over. And if you watched what happened last week then it should be painfully apparent that I see no prospects for that [consensus] returning."

Retired Lt. Gen. Ron Helmly, former commander of the U.S. Army Reserve, said the country's National Guard and Reserve troops acquitted themselves well over the past dozen years of war, but that will have little to do with decisions made on funding for the military because of the divide.

"The defense constituency of [conservative-leaning] ‘Blue Dog' Democrats and internationalist Republicans is dissipated," he said, "and been replaced by progressive liberal Democrats and traditionalist isolationist Republicans – in political circles known as the Tea Party."

Their views are "diametrically opposed," he said, and there is no coalition in either the House or Senate that will come to the aid of the armed services. That is evident by the sequester cuts forced across the government, including DoD, without regard to actual need. Helmly called it a "chainsaw massacre approach" to budget cuts.

Next year, he said, more than half of the expected $85 billion in federal spending cuts will be made to the Defense Department budget.

The dire assessment by top Army officials to Pentagon leaders provides a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes struggle for the future of the military in a time of declining budgets.

The Army provided its assessment as each of the services is conducting a four-year scrub of its strategy and the resources needed to meet it, a process called the Quadrennial Defense Review.

Top Army officials told Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter last month that the Pentagon has in the past been structured to handle two separate wars, but that today’s Army is “too small” and “at high risk to meet one major war.”

The briefing also said war is likely to break out again.

Imagine a future in which real wages for most workers decline year after year; a future in which middle-class jobs that disappeared in the Great Recession won't be coming back; a future in which young Americans either squeeze into an increasingly wealthy elite or tumble to the bottom, with fewer and fewer in what we once called the middle class.

Actually, that's a description of the present. The future looks even bleaker, according to libertarian economist Tyler Cowen.

For his new book, "Average Is Over," Cowen projected current trends out over the next 20 years. His conclusion?

"Our future will bring more wealthy people than ever before, but also more poor people," he writes. "Rather than balancing our budget with higher taxes or lower benefits, we will allow the real wages of many workers to fall — and thus we will allow the creation of a new underclass."

Remember, Cowen isn't adding or subtracting anything from what's already happening. He's merely forecasting based on current trends: middle-class American jobs being eliminated by automation and outsourcing, downward pressure on wages for all but the most skilled, growing inequality between the wealthy and everyone else, and elected officials who don't seem capable of slowing those trends, let alone stopping them.

After illustrating their enthusiasm for repealing the Bill of Rights, a video shows Americans happily signing a petition to support a “Nazi-style Orwellian police state,” in what easily represents the most shocking footage of its kind to date.

Citing issues with how the government shutdown has impacted the ability of the police to “keep the community safe,” Dice tells San Diegans that there is a need to “increase the Orwellian system.”

“Not a problem,” responds one man as he signs the petition.

“We just want to model it after the Nazi Germany system to keep people safe and secure,” Dice tells another individual.

After signing the petition to “implement the Orwellian police state,” another man responds, “You find the pot of money though,” apparently more concerned about how much a Nazi-style police state would cost than its actual consequences.

“They’re trying to cut the budget by 20 per cent so we just want to make sure that we can model the police state after the Nazi Germany system,” Dice tells another couple who sign the petition, before adding, “Thanks for supporting the police state.”

The IRS paid as much as $13.6 billion in bogus claims for the Earned Income Tax Credit last year, according to a report the agency’s internal auditor released Tuesday morning.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said it warned the IRS in 2001 that it was making the erroneous payments, but two years later the agency hasn’t fixed the problem.

Over the last decade, the IRS could have paid out as much as $132.6 billion in improper payments.

As the nation enters the third week of the Obamacare health exchange implementation, it’s worth taking a second look at some interesting comments made in August by one of the chief architects of the law.

In short, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., never really thought the exchanges would work.

He just sees the Affordable Care Act as the first step to a fully government-run health care system, something that could be easier to achieve after the glitch-riddled, problematic opening of the federal health insurance exchanges this month.

During an appearance on a Las Vegas PBS program in August, Reid said he sees a national single-payer health system as the natural next step for health care in America.  Reid said the nation had to “work its way past” insurance-based health care, according to a recap provided by the Las Vegas Sun newspaper.

“What we’ve done with Obamacare is have a step in the right direction, but we’re far from having something that’s going to work forever,” Reid said.

The so-called “single-payer system” essentially would do away with private health insurance and would allow the government to become the sole provider of medical costs (though all costs would actually be picked up by the taxpayers, of course), similar to the socialized medical systems in Canada, Great Britain and elsewhere.

Japan’s trade deficit in September surged 64.1% from a year earlier, extending its string of shortfalls to a record 15th consecutive month.

A weaker yen has been helping Japan’s export picture, but the volume of shipments was down last month while the country’s energy bill remained high due to imports of pricey fossil fuels.

A group of 10 black youths — one of them a 12-year-old girl — surrounded a white couple's car in Brooklyn, viciously beating the husband and yanking the wife to the pavement by her hair as they peppered the two with racial slurs, authorities said.

“Get those crackers!” some of them screamed, according to court papers. “Get that white whore!”

The confrontation erupted about 7 p.m. Monday, as the marauding group crossed Avenue U at E. 58th St. near Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Mill Basin.

Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna, apparently had the green light and the husband honked at the group to get out of the way. The rowdy kids started kicking the car, according to the criminal complaint. Ronald Russo got out to check on potential damage to his vehicle.

And that’s when all hell broke loose.
