DEN boasts of using “eco-magic” to stop progress and “channel positive energy.” The basic principles of their environmental activism include “honoring the fair folk”; better known as the fairies.
Trolls, fairies, goblins and elves are easy enough to laugh off and those who believe in them can be dismissed as irrational; but the fairy hunters fool more people when they slip out of their tunics and pointed ears and slip on their white lab coats and parkas.
The “Australasian Antarctic Expedition” set off to another cold place not in search of elves, but in search of melting ice. Unlike the original expedition it knew exactly what it wanted to find. One of the purposes of the expedition was to “determine the extent to which human activity and pollution has directly impacted on this remote region of Antarctica.”
Considering the shortage of human activities in Antarctica, the reasonable answer would be zero, but the elves in parkas weren’t interested in being reasonable. They were out to provide a few more reels of propaganda showing that human industry was destroying the planet.

Some history: The first battle of Fallujah was fought from early April to early May 2004. Fifty one members of the United States military were killed in action. In addition, contractors Scott Helvenston, Jerko Zovko, Wesley Batalona, and Michael Teague were murdered, and then had their bodies desecrated by al-Qaeda-affiliated "insurgents." (Democrat propagandist Markos Moulitsas responded to this atrocity by writing, in reference to the dead civilian contractors, "screw them.") American forces eventually withdrew from the city, although they maintained a presence nearby.
The second battle of Fallujah was fought from early November to late December 2004. Ninety five American military personnel died while successfully capturing the city from al-Qaeda. And the city was held from that point on...until now.
One hundred and fifty Americans died fighting for this city, and hundreds more were wounded. And now it has been retaken by the enemy. Commander-in-chief Obama's response: another round of golf.
What an absolute disgrace.
And let's not forget that Obama has worked to fund and arm al-Qaeda "rebels" in neighboring Syria. But none dare call it treason.

The tinny squawk of Greensleeves drifts through the air. You're possibly already thinking about icecream cones, and a flake buried in white gloop at a jaunty angle.

The path here can be summarized in two words: self-control. Though I've had some help in the last few years, in the end, finances are not someone else's responsibility. Unless you're a child or an addict, you are your own best gatekeeper.

Doing this is an easy way to manage money and actually puts you ahead of your credit card payments. The great thing here is that although you have two credit cards, you really only have to manage one: your "wants." Your "needs" should stay the same, so set aside those funds. Just make sure your total never goes beyond your income. Assuming you have a full-time job, this becomes a fairly simple exercise. Any extra money then goes into your savings, impulse buys and Jaeger bombs.

Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) said Monday that members of Congress are working in private on a deal to cut the deficit by $2.5 trillion over the next decade.
Mulvaney told WRHI radio in South Carolina that while the two parties are still openly deadlocked on the issue of spending cuts versus raising taxes, he thinks they are making progress.
"It's amazing when you close the door and folks are willing to talk privately about things how reasonable some Democrats can be in terms of reforming entitlement programs and how Republicans can be in terms of, say, reforming the tax code," Mulvaney said.
Mulvaney did not reveal which members are negotiating and said the group has no formal name. But he said many Democrats have a real interest in cutting the budget deficit and the national debt, which has risen to $17.2 trillion.
"I have real hard-core, left-wing Democrat friends who are afraid of the deficit," he said. "They want to fix it in a way slightly different than I do. That's fine, as long as they're convinced that it's the risk that it is."
The Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 was originally designed to cut $2.5 trillion from the deficit. But the budget deal reached just before Christmas altered the BCA by moving more of the cuts into the future and raising revenue by increasing customs user fees and safety fees for air passengers.

The air pollution plaguing China may blow east to Korea and Japan, and could even reach the United States, The New York Times reports.
Scientists say the soot, ozone-forming compounds and other pollutants from China are raising concerns in countries that are in the path of the plumes.
New research reveals that China contributes on average to Japan's annual fin-particle pollution between 40 percent to 60 percent depending on the city in question. And 10 percent to 20 percent of Japan's springtime ozone depletion comes from China's emissions.
“The countries most directly affected by air pollution from China are its nearest neighbors,” Paul Harris, the chair professor of global and environmental studies at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, said in an email. “As with every other aspect of relations with China, there is a limit to what they can do about it.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Friday that the top priority of Congress in 2014 should be to extend unemployment insurance.
According to The Hill, Pelosi said in a statement that the upcoming expiration of federal unemployment benefits is “simply immoral.”
“Starting tomorrow, too many American families will face the New Year with uncertainty, insecurity, and instability as a result of congressional Republicans’ refusal to extend critical unemployment insurance,” she said. “The first item on Congress’ agenda in the New Year must be an extension of unemployment insurance. That must be our priority on day one.”

A new report on the war in Afghanistan suggests that any gains made by the U.S. and its allies will be lost by 2017 as the Taliban and other groups become increasingly influential in the war-torn country and as the U.S. winds up its troop presence there.
According to The Washington Post, the report, known as a National Intelligence Estimate, includes input from all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. The assessment also predicts that the situation would deteriorate even more rapidly if the U.S. and the Afghan government do not sign a security deal that would provide for an international force in Afghanistan after next year's official drawdown of U.S. troops.
The report's dire prognosis is not universally accepted by all members of the Obama administration. The Post quotes an administration official as saying "An assessment that says things are going to be gloomy no matter what you do, that you're just delaying the inevitable, that's just a view. I would not think it would be the determining view."

Over time, churches in Nazi German were “confined as far as possible to the performance of narrowly religious functions, and even within this narrow sphere were subjected to as many hindrances as the Nazis dared to impose.” This is the evaluation of a 1945 report published by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA. It was called The Nazi Master Plan: The Persecution of the Christian Churches and was prepared for the War Crimes Staff. It offered the following summary: “This study describes, with illustrative factual evidence, Nazi purposes, policies and methods of persecuting the Christian Churches in Germany and occupied Europe.”
Where did the strategic plan begin? “Implementation of this objective started with the curtailment of religious instruction in the primary and secondary schools with the squeezing of the religious periods into inconvenient hours, with Nazi propaganda among the teachers in order to induce them to refuse the teaching of religion, with vetoing of . . . religious text books, and finally with substituting [a] Nazi Weltanschauung [worldview] and ‘German faith’ for Christian religious denominational instruction. . . . At the time of the outbreak of the war . . . religious instruction had practically disappeared from Germany’s primary schools.”
Does any of this sound familiar? This is a perfect description of our nation’s education system with the only difference being that a materialistic worldview and “secular” faith have replaced the once Christian worldview that served as the foundation of education in America.

The government has warned about 140 organizations, such as ministries and agencies as well as universities and research institutions, not to use a Japanese-language input method editor developed by Baidu Inc., China's largest search engine company, after it was found that all text data typed into computers using it are sent to Baidu's server, it has been learned.
Baidu IME has been installed on some computers at the Foreign Ministry and at least 12 universities, including the University of Tokyo, according to an investigation by The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The government's National Information Security Center said it cannot be denied that important information might have been compromised at those organizations.
Baidu IME is free software released in 2009. Baidu Japan Inc. said last January that about 2 million people use the software in Japan.
In mid-December, a probe by an information technology company found that if the software is used with its default settings, all words and text input into search windows, e-mails, word-processing software and other applications are automatically transmitted to Baidu servers. Such a function could be intended to enable higher accuracy in cloud-based hiragana-kanji conversions by gathering data from computers to a host server, but the software's terms of use do not refer to such a system.
The Yomiuri probe has found that the software was installed on five computers for official use at the Foreign Ministry's five sections in Tokyo.
A great white shark was pictured creeping up on a pair of surfers in Manhattan Beach, California recently.
A local mother, who asked not to be identified, was taking a picture of her 12-year-old son and a friend just as they were about to catch a wave when the shark appeared in the break.
'It was quite a shock to see,' the mother told KTLA.
'Many local surfers and lifeguards have seen this and believe it to be a shark,' she added. 'Of course, I told my kids it was a dolphin, as we live at the beach and are in the waters here almost daily.'
This month the popular Facebook group Plus Size Modeling shared a post with the above image, along with the question: "Should toy companies start making plus-sized Barbie dolls? In all honesty, we want to know ..."
The post generated nearly 36,000 likes and over 1,600 shares - and a deluge of negative feedback from many who felt the plus-size Barbie was an inaccurate representation of larger women, the Daily Mail reports.
"Yeah lets promote poor health and eating habits. Just what America needs," wrote one user, Kyle Boise.
Other readers took aim at the doll's sizeable number of chins and others injected some necessary medical advice into the debate.
"I hope she comes with a blood pressure cuff to show young girls that how many chins she has is not what's important but the health issues that could come along with being this size," wrote Melissa Audet.
Several readers quibbled with whether the "fat" doll was an accurate depiction of a typical woman.
MaryBeth Gafford said: "The triple chin is too much. Most overweight people (me included) only have a double chin no matter what size they are. This Barbie is inaccurate."
Many users believed that that there should be a middle ground - that there should be a healthy-looking doll that is neither too far nor too thin.
"Why not have a realistically proportioned Barbie that promotes healthy diet and exercise?" said Michelle Ashford.
The image was produced by Worth1000.com rather than Mattel, the iconic doll's manufacturer. But perhaps this could be the next front in the 'campaign for real beauty', promoted by brands such as Dove.
.The Obama administration is pressuring Israeli generals to stop publicly voicing their concerns about the administration’s security proposals in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and instead endorse the administration’s plans, according to Israeli media reports.
The administration is seeking a complete or partial IDF withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, where the border between Israel and Jordan lies at the eastern edge of Judea and Samaria, also called the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority has long sought control of the valley. However, Israel and Jordan are opposed to an IDF withdrawal, which they fear would enable the transit of terrorists and arms through Jordan into the West Bank.
After a prominent retired Israeli general spoke out against IDF withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, Israeli media reported that the Obama administration’s head envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Martin Indyk, convened a meeting of Israeli security officials. He pressured them to drop their objections to the plan and make media appearances in support of it to help sell a skeptical Israeli public on the benefits of a reduction in security.

At its core, ObamaCare is three things: a massive expansion of Medicaid; a set of complex mandates to control both insurance providers and customers; and the largest tax increase in a generation, much of it levied against the middle class. Because it is politically vital to hide tax increases from the Sainted Middle Class, much of this burden is hidden as pass-through taxation – you think your premiums are increasing, but it’s really an income redistribution scheme with the tax burden laid on insurance providers, who pass it along to you. This has the enormous political benefit of diverting public anger over increased premiums against the insurance providers, rather than the government, which is something the former should have considered more carefully before hopping into bed with the latter, visions of mandatory commerce dancing in their heads.
ObamaCare also includes quite a few explicit tax increases, which were delayed until they would not jeopardize Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. The most obvious of these taxes is the individual mandate – certified as a 100 percent bona fide tax by the Supreme Court, in the decision that allowed ObamaCare to exist at all. President Obama has seized the extraordinary new power to selectively delay this tax for certain people – a precedent that will prove interesting if the next President also wishes to waive taxes by executive fiat. Perhaps we should add a fourth core component of ObamaCare: it rewrote the Constitution, in the manner of a computer virus corrupting an operating system.

The serenity of President Barack Obama’s Hawaiian vacation was rattled a little on Saturday when demonstrators aired grievances against unmanned aircraft and other issues in a small protest zone near the first family’s upscale rented house.
Returning from an early morning gym visit at nearby Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Obama’s motorcade passed a few dozen protesters holding signs with slogans including “Drones: Unethical and Illegal,” “U.S. Bases Out” and “Close Guantanamo Now.” Others expressed their opposition to genetically modified foods.
It marked a second day of peaceful protest surrounding Obama, who is spending a two-week vacation in Kailua with wife Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, the first lady’s mother, Marian Robinson, and the family’s Portuguese Water Dogs, Bo and Sunny.

Like his supporters, US Secretary of State John Kerry has apparently been asleep for the past 20 years.
Kerry has proffered us security arrangements, which he claims will protect Israel from aggression for the long haul. They will do this, he argues, despite the fact that his plan denies the Jewish state physically defensible borders in the framework of a peace deal with the PLO.
There are several serious problems with Kerry's arrangements. But in the context of Kerry's repeated claims that his commitment to Israel's security is unqualified, their most glaring flaws are rooted in their disregard for all the lessons we have learned over the past two decades.
Kerry's security arrangements rest on three assumptions. First, they assume that the main threats Israel will face in an era of "peace" with the Palestinians will emanate from east of the Jordan River. The main two scenarios that have been raised are the threat of terrorists and advanced weaponry being smuggled across the border; and a land invasion or other type of major aggression against Israel, perpetrated by Iraqis moving across Jordan.
It is to fend off these threats, Kerry argues, that he would agree to a temporary deployment of Israeli forces in the Jordan Valley even after Israel expels all or most of the 650,000 Israeli civilians who live in Judea, Samaria and eastern, northern and southern Jerusalem.
We will consider the strategic wisdom of his plans for defending Israel from threats east of the Jordan River presently. But first we need to ask whether a threat from across the border would really be the only significant threat that Israel would face after surrendering Judea, Samaria and much of Jerusalem to the PLO.
The answer to this question is obvious to every Israeli who has been awake for the past 20 years, since Israel started down the "land for peace" road with the PLO.
The greatest threat Israel will face in an era of "peace" with the Palestinians will not come from east of the Jordan. It will come from west of the Jordan — from the Jew-free Palestinian state.

House lawmakers on Sunday disputed a new report that concludes Al Qaeda played no role in the fatal 2012 terror attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.
The report, published Saturday in The New York Times, found no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had a role in the assault that killed four Americans on Sept. 11, 2012, and that it appeared that the attack was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made anti-Islamic video, as the Obama administration first claimed.
“I dispute that, and the intelligence community, to a large volume, disputes that,” Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told “Fox News Sunday.”
He also repeatedly said the story was “not accurate.”
Rogers was joined on the show by California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who said, “intelligence indicates Al Qaeda was involved.”
The findings in the New York Times story also conflict with testimony from Greg Hicks, the deputy of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was killed in the attack. Hicks described the video as "a non-event in Libya" at that time, and consequently not a significant trigger for the attack
