When Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was still in office, vibrant and in command of his faculties, a venerated rabbi, who claimed he had met the Messiah, predicted He would not come until after Sharon’s death.

Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri died shortly after the stroke Sharon suffered put him in a coma in 2006. But before the beloved Kaduri died, he wrote a cryptic note on which he named the Messiah with whom he claimed to have had a mystical encounter. On the 108-year-old rabbi’s instructions, the note would be released a year after his death.

When the sealed note was opened a year later, it was posted on Kaduri’s website. Kaduri had revealed the Messiah’s name as Yehoshua, or the formal Hebrew pronunciation of Yeshua or Jesus.

As a result of this unusual prophetic twist and the recent release of a book and movie about the life and death of Kaduri, the death of Sharon has renewed interest in Christian and prophecy circles around the world.

Sharon, 85, served as Israel’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006 when he became incapacitated. During his tenure, he initiated a disengagement plan, during which thousands of Jews were deported from Gaza and northern Samaria – turning the once-fertile region over to Hamas-control.

A “death curse” by a group of rabbis in Israel was issued against Sharon for this action.

China defended on Friday its new fishing restrictions in disputed waters in the South China Sea against criticism from the United States, saying the rules were in accordance with international law.

The rules, approved by China's southern Hainan province, took effect on January 1 and require foreign fishing vessels to obtain approval to enter the waters, which the local government says are under its jurisdiction.

Beijing claims almost the entire oil- and gas-rich South China Sea and rejects rival claims to parts of it from the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam.

Washington called the fishing rules "provocative and potentially dangerous", prompting a rebuttal from China's foreign ministry on Friday.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the government "has the right and responsibility to regulate the relevant islands and reefs as well as non-biological resources" according to international and domestic law.

"For more than 30 years, China's relevant fisheries laws and regulations have been consistently implemented in a normal way, and have never caused any tension," Hua said at a daily news briefing.

"If someone feels the need to say that technical amendments to local fisheries regulations implemented many years ago will cause tensions in the region and pose a threat to regional stability, then I can only say that if this does not stem from a lack of basic common sense, then it must be due to an ulterior motive."

A government-affiliated fishing organization in Vietnam criticized the new rules and the Philippines said they escalate tensions in the region.

The key issues for all journalists in China are the freedom of reporting and the role the media play in the communist country.

Foreign reporters are vetted and have to apply for numerous permits and licenses before they can work normally and attend news conferences, interview members of the public or visit newsworthy sites. The government can and does act against media companies or individual reporters it doesn’t like, either by turning down the renewal of permits, as happened again recently, or by closing down entire representative bureaus for an indefinite time.

The main task of the Chinese media is not to ferret out government secrets, fraud and corruption or to provide deep background and analysis about the news, but to follow and explain the official government agenda.

The regime does not see the delivery of news about what goes on in the country, good and bad, as the media’s first responsibility. Instead, newspapers, radio and television need to function as the voice of government and party.

Critical news can still occur, but only within often unclear parameters, which means it can either lead to repression against the media or be used in a power struggle between top politicians or leadership factions.

Taiwanese media should not continue to harbor the illusion that they will able to work in China in an environment similar to the one in Taiwan, where they can just hang out outside a minister’s office or at the door of his home long enough to get an interesting quote or a reaction to a news event splashed across the morning’s front pages. In China, they will still have to work within the local framework, which has been designed by its communist leaders.

Three mainland Chinese women who gave birth in Hong Kong have each been sentenced to 12 months in jail for overstaying in the city, authorities said Friday, as part of measures to discourage birth tourism.

The women -- who separately entered the territory as visitors in May, June and July 2013 -- were each arrested late last year after rushing to hospitals for delivery without a booking, a government statement said.

"The Immigration Department is concerned about the situation of overstaying mainland pregnant women seeking to give birth in Hong Kong," said the statement, citing an immigration department spokesman.

"Great efforts are made to strengthen the examination of mainland pregnant women at the control points," the spokesman added.

The southern city of seven million people has been struggling to cope with tens of thousands of mainland Chinese women who arrive yearly to give birth, thereby gaining residency rights for their children.

“We were made aware of a false and inappropriate street name on Google Maps and corrected it immediately,” Lena Wagner, a spokeswoman for Google’s German unit, told the AFP. “We apologize for this mistake.”

AFP hinted the mistake may have been the work of hackers. Pranksters once made Cologne’s famous cathedral disappear from the popular online map website.

The Berlin city square is presently named after the first federal president of Germany, Theodor Heuss. In 1933, the name was changed from its original name of Reichskanzlerplatz to Adolf-Hitler-Platz as dictated by plans for the Welthauptstadt Germania (or World Capital Germania) by Adolf Hitler and Albert Speer. Naming the square after another infamous fascist, Italy’s Benito Mussolini, was also tossed around.

From around Aleppo in western Syria to small areas of Falluja in central Iraq, al Qaeda now controls territory that stretches more than 400 miles across the heart of the Middle East, according to English and Arab language news accounts as well as accounts on jihadist websites.

Indeed, al Qaeda appears to control more territory in the Arab world than it has done at any time in its history.

The focus of al Qaeda's leaders has always been regime change in the Arab world in order to install Taliban-style regimes. Al Qaeda's leader Ayman al-Zawahiri acknowledged as much in his 2001 autobiography, "Knights Under the Banner of the Prophet," when he explained that the most important strategic goal of al Qaeda was to seize control of a state, or part of a state, somewhere in the Muslim world, explaining that, "without achieving this goal our actions will mean nothing."

Now al-Zawahiri is closer to his goal than he has ever been. On Friday al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq seized control of parts of the city of Falluja and parts of the city of Ramadi, both of which are located in Iraq's restive Anbar Province.

In his long press conference in Trenton, Mr. Christie was properly contrite, saying he had been "lied to" by the senior aide he proceeded to fire. He also said he is withdrawing his support for his former campaign manager to run the state Republican Party because the man had shown "callous and indifferent" behavior toward the people inconvenienced by the traffic-lane closures. If Mr. Christie really didn't know about this cheap exercise in political payback, and nothing new emerges, the incident shouldn't interfere with the Governor's expected presidential run.

That doesn't mean Mr. Christie shouldn't learn from the experience. One lesson is that he's going to have to upgrade the quality of his advisers as he moves onto the national scene. The traffic-lane-as-vendetta ploy is so dumb and petty that anyone who would attempt it isn't ready for prime time. Never mind putting it in email.

Mitt Romney was supposed to be a crack manager, but he surrounded himself with campaign lightweights and he suffered for it. One of Mr. Christie's selling points for the White House will be that he is an executive who has run a sizable state, so the media will descend on Trenton even more than it did on Wasilla, Alaska, for Sarah Palin. Better to clean out the hack loyalists now.

MoveOn bemoaned in an email to supporters the “troubling trend” of increased energy production, which is reducing the U.S. trade deficit, creating well-paying jobs, stabilizing global energy prices, and undermining the economic engine behind some of the world’s most repressive regimes.

MoveOn announced the creation of a new effort called “#FrackingFighter,” which “seeks to slow down the fracking boom that is anticipated to occur across the United States in 2014 and beyond.”

The increased use of hydraulic fracturing, an innovative oil and gas technique, has sent U.S. energy production skyrocketing, MoveOn said. It vowed to slow or reverse that trend.

Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime.

"We've never seen a fish this big,'' said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oarfish we saw was three feet long.''

Because oarfish dive more than 914 metres deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.

The obscure fish apparently died of natural causes. Tissue samples and video footage were sent to be studied by biologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

On the heels of a federal court striking down Chicago's ban on gun sales, those seeking gun permits in Illinois flooded the State Police website over the weekend to begin the permitting process.

In fact, the amount of Illinois residents seeking a conceal carry permit already surpasses those who enrolled in Obamacare after the first two months of the launch of healthcare.gov. The Chicago Sun-Times reported 4,525 individuals signed up on Sunday alone for their firearms permits, when the State Police first opened the process to all concealed carry applicants.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said that number is included in Sunday’s total of more than 11,000 people who have signed up because of an early application process that began December 18 and was open to only firearm instructors. Officials told the Sun-Times they expect 350,000 to 400,000 people (about 1,000 per day) will sign up for conceal carry firearm permits this year. 

“So far, we’re pleased with the process,” Bond said. “The early application process allowed us to work out several issues.”

Illinois State Police have up to 90 days to approve or reject applicants if their applications are completed and their fingerprints are submitted in an electronic format. Illinois became the last state to pass legislation allowing residents to carry concealed weapons. The five-year permits cost $150 for residents and $300 for non-residents. 

In contrast, the number of Illinois residents going to healthcare.gov over a two-month period and enrolling in Obamacare is currently on a slower pace than those looking to become conceal carry permit holders. Only 7,043 Illinoisans were enrolled in Obamacare plans two months after the website's launch, the Chicago Tribune reported in December.

President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton opposed the surge in Iraq chiefly for “political” reasons, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates alleges in a new memoir.

“Hillary told the president that her opposition to the [2007] surge in Iraq had been political because she was facing him in the Iowa primary. . . . The president conceded vaguely that opposition to the Iraq surge had been political,” Gates writes, noting he found it “remarkable,” according to the Washington Post.

“To hear the two of them making these admissions, and in front of me, was as surprising as it was dismaying,” he reportedly added in his book, titled “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary of War” and slated for release Jan. 14.

Back from his $4 million Hawaii vacation, President Barack Obama seems poised to sound the populist trumpet in an effort to turn the page on 2013’s disastrous Obamacare rollout.

Many pundits are speculating that Obama, seeing the popularity of liberal populists like New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, will use the current debate over unemployment insurance to engage in more divisive rhetoric:

The Obama administration has set the stage for a push that could rekindle cries of class warfare -- calling for renewed long-term unemployment benefits, a minimum wage increase and a campaign against what Democrats call "income inequality."

Ahead of his multi-week, holiday vacation in Hawaii, President Obama pushed Congress to move forward on extending federal unemployment benefits that weren't included in the budget deal Senate Democrats and House Republicans struck to fund the federal government for the next two years. The White House has scheduled an East Room event on Tuesday in which the president will appear with people who lost that insurance.

On Tuesday, that's precisely what Obama did, trotting out unemployed people to push for another boost to unemployment benefits, and citing income inequality as the rationale.

One potential challenge for the President’s prospective populist push is his own family’s affluence. Despite the President’s public lowering of his own salary, the Obamas' tax returns show a family whose incomes would routinely place them in the highest bracket, with lucrative income streams outside of the White House. Last year, however, the Obama family paid an effective tax rate of only 18 percent.

GIRL SCOUTS TWITS TEJAS WENDY DAVIS WOMAN OF THE YEAR–WHAT’S TO WONDER ANYMORE AS THE LEFT HAVE TAKEN OVER

According to the report, the official Girl Scouts Twitter account referred to Davis, who filibustered a bill that banned abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, as “incredible,” and linked to a Huffington Post list containing the names of Gloria Steinem and Davis.

The Girl Scouts’ ties to the institutional left and the abortion industry have become increasingly apparent, with Breitbart News’ Austin Ruse delivering the most recent exposé of the organization’s prominent blogger Josh Ackley, who moonlighted as lead singer of a “homo-punk” band called The Dead Betties. The band belongs to a movement called “homocore” that slams disapproval of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lifestyles.

In addition, Ackley and his band produced several albums and videos, including one depicting a woman being stalked and strangled as Ackley sneered, and one showing a young man, perhaps Ackley, writhing around in newspapers as he apparently masturbates.

Ruse subsequently reported that Ackley’s name has since been scrubbed from the Girl Scouts press page, but that he remains with the organization in its communications department.

According to Cathy Cleaver Ruse, writing at the Washington Times, Ackley has been an important link between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood, the abortion industry giant:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Sunday said he was not currently considering an elimination of the filibuster for legislation, but he warned that the country could not remain “paralyzed” by Republican obstruction.

Reid and the Senate Democratic majority enraged the GOP last year by moving to cut off the filibuster for most presidential appointees and judicial nominations. They left in place a 60-vote threshold for legislation. But in a rare Sunday television interview, Reid stopped short of categorically ruling out such a move in the future.

“We’re not there yet,” he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “No, I’m not thinking about that today.”

In the same interview, Reid denounced in his typically harsh rhetoric Republican opposition to a range of Democratic priorities, including an extension of long-term unemployment insurance, raising the minimum range and strengthening background checks for gun purchases.

On all of those issues, the Nevada Democrat said Republican members of Congress were out of step with Republicans nationwide, who, he said, supported the measures in public polls.
