Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) said Monday that members of Congress are working in private on a deal to cut the deficit by $2.5 trillion over the next decade.
Mulvaney told WRHI radio in South Carolina that while the two parties are still openly deadlocked on the issue of spending cuts versus raising taxes, he thinks they are making progress.

"It's amazing when you close the door and folks are willing to talk privately about things how reasonable some Democrats can be in terms of reforming entitlement programs and how Republicans can be in terms of, say, reforming the tax code," Mulvaney said.
Mulvaney did not reveal which members are negotiating and said the group has no formal name. But he said many Democrats have a real interest in cutting the budget deficit and the national debt, which has risen to $17.2 trillion.
"I have real hard-core, left-wing Democrat friends who are afraid of the deficit," he said. "They want to fix it in a way slightly different than I do. That's fine, as long as they're convinced that it's the risk that it is."
The Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 was originally designed to cut $2.5 trillion from the deficit. But the budget deal reached just before Christmas altered the BCA by moving more of the cuts into the future and raising revenue by increasing customs user fees and safety fees for air passengers.

The air pollution plaguing China may blow east to Korea and Japan, and could even reach the United States, The New York Times reports.
Scientists say the soot, ozone-forming compounds and other pollutants from China are raising concerns in countries that are in the path of the plumes.

New research reveals that China contributes on average to Japan's annual fin-particle pollution between 40 percent to 60 percent depending on the city in question. And 10 percent to 20 percent of Japan's springtime ozone depletion comes from China's emissions.
“The countries most directly affected by air pollution from China are its nearest neighbors,” Paul Harris, the chair professor of global and environmental studies at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, said in an email. “As with every other aspect of relations with China, there is a limit to what they can do about it.”

Office workers in search of snacks will be counting calories along with their change under new labeling regulations for vending machines included in President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law.

Requiring calorie information to be displayed on roughly 5 million vending machines nationwide will help consumers make healthier choices, says the Food and Drug Administration, which is expected to release final rules early next year. It estimates the cost to the vending machine industry at $25.8 million initially and $24 million per year after that, but says if just .02 percent of obese adults ate 100 fewer calories a week, the savings to the health care system would be at least that great.

The rules will apply to about 10,800 companies that operate 20 or more machines. Nearly three quarters of those companies have three or fewer employees, and their profit margin is extremely low, according to the National Automatic Merchandising Association. An initial investment of $2,400 plus $2,200 in annual costs is a lot of money for a small company that only clears a few thousand dollars a year, said Eric Dell, the group’s vice president for government affairs.

A new report on the war in Afghanistan suggests that any gains made by the U.S. and its allies will be lost by 2017 as the Taliban and other groups become increasingly influential in the war-torn country and as the U.S. winds up its troop presence there.

According to The Washington Post, the report, known as a National Intelligence Estimate, includes input from all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. The assessment also predicts that the situation would deteriorate even more rapidly if the U.S. and the Afghan government do not sign a security deal that would provide for an international force in Afghanistan after next year's official drawdown of U.S. troops.

The report's dire prognosis is not universally accepted by all members of the Obama administration. The Post quotes an administration official as saying "An assessment that says things are going to be gloomy no matter what you do, that you're just delaying the inevitable, that's just a view. I would not think it would be the determining view."

It was called The Nazi Master Plan: The Persecution of the Christian Churches and was prepared for the War Crimes Staff. It offered the following summary: “This study describes, with illustrative factual evidence, Nazi purposes, policies and methods of persecuting the Christian Churches in Germany and occupied Europe.”

Where did the strategic plan begin? “Implementation of this objective started with the curtailment of religious instruction in the primary and secondary schools with the squeezing of the religious periods into inconvenient hours, with Nazi propaganda among the teachers in order to induce them to refuse the teaching of religion, with vetoing of . . . religious text books, and finally with substituting [a] Nazi Weltanschauung [worldview] and ‘German faith’ for Christian religious denominational instruction. . . . At the time of the outbreak of the war . . . religious instruction had practically disappeared from Germany’s primary schools.”

Does any of this sound familiar? This is a perfect description of our nation’s education system with the only difference being that a materialistic worldview and “secular” faith have replaced the once Christian worldview that served as the foundation of education in America.

The government has warned about 140 organizations, such as ministries and agencies as well as universities and research institutions, not to use a Japanese-language input method editor developed by Baidu Inc., China's largest search engine company, after it was found that all text data typed into computers using it are sent to Baidu's server, it has been learned.

Baidu IME has been installed on some computers at the Foreign Ministry and at least 12 universities, including the University of Tokyo, according to an investigation by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The government's National Information Security Center said it cannot be denied that important information might have been compromised at those organizations.

Baidu IME is free software released in 2009. Baidu Japan Inc. said last January that about 2 million people use the software in Japan.

In mid-December, a probe by an information technology company found that if the software is used with its default settings, all words and text input into search windows, e-mails, word-processing software and other applications are automatically transmitted to Baidu servers. Such a function could be intended to enable higher accuracy in cloud-based hiragana-kanji conversions by gathering data from computers to a host server, but the software's terms of use do not refer to such a system.

The Yomiuri probe has found that the software was installed on five computers for official use at the Foreign Ministry's five sections in Tokyo.

A great white shark was pictured creeping up on a pair of surfers in Manhattan Beach, California recently.

A local mother, who asked not to be identified, was taking a picture of her 12-year-old son and a friend just as they were about to catch a wave when the shark appeared in the break.

'It was quite a shock to see,' the mother told KTLA.

'Many local surfers and lifeguards have seen this and believe it to be a shark,' she added. 'Of course, I told my kids it was a dolphin, as we live at the beach and are in the waters here almost daily.'

This month the popular Facebook group Plus Size Modeling shared a post with the above image, along with the question: "Should toy companies start making plus-sized Barbie dolls? In all honesty, we want to know ..."

The post generated nearly 36,000 likes and over 1,600 shares - and a deluge of negative feedback from many who felt the plus-size Barbie was an inaccurate representation of larger women, the Daily Mail reports.

"Yeah lets promote poor health and eating habits. Just what America needs," wrote one user, Kyle Boise.

Other readers took aim at the doll's sizeable number of chins and others injected some necessary medical advice into the debate.

"I hope she comes with a blood pressure cuff to show young girls that how many chins she has is not what's important but the health issues that could come along with being this size," wrote Melissa Audet.

Several readers quibbled with whether the "fat" doll was an accurate depiction of a typical woman.

MaryBeth Gafford said: "The triple chin is too much. Most overweight people (me included) only have a double chin no matter what size they are. This Barbie is inaccurate."

Many users believed that that there should be a middle ground - that there should be a healthy-looking doll that is neither too far nor too thin.

"Why not have a realistically proportioned Barbie that promotes healthy diet and exercise?" said Michelle Ashford.

The image was produced by Worth1000.com rather than Mattel, the iconic doll's manufacturer. But perhaps this could be the next front in the 'campaign for real beauty', promoted by brands such as Dove.

The Obama administration is pressuring Israeli generals to stop publicly voicing their concerns about the administration’s security proposals in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and instead endorse the administration’s plans, according to Israeli media reports.

The administration is seeking a complete or partial IDF withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, where the border between Israel and Jordan lies at the eastern edge of Judea and Samaria, also called the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority has long sought control of the valley. However, Israel and Jordan are opposed to an IDF withdrawal, which they fear would enable the transit of terrorists and arms through Jordan into the West Bank.

After a prominent retired Israeli general spoke out against IDF withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, Israeli media reported that the Obama administration’s head envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Martin Indyk, convened a meeting of Israeli security officials. He pressured them to drop their objections to the plan and make media appearances in support of it to help sell a skeptical Israeli public on the benefits of a reduction in security.

At its core, ObamaCare is three things: a massive expansion of Medicaid; a set of complex mandates to control both insurance providers and customers; and the largest tax increase in a generation, much of it levied against the middle class.  Because it is politically vital to hide tax increases from the Sainted Middle Class, much of this burden is hidden as pass-through taxation – you think your premiums are increasing, but it’s really an income redistribution scheme with the tax burden laid on insurance providers, who pass it along to you.  This has the enormous political benefit of diverting public anger over increased premiums against the insurance providers, rather than the government, which is something the former should have considered more carefully before hopping into bed with the latter, visions of mandatory commerce dancing in their heads.

ObamaCare also includes quite a few explicit tax increases, which were delayed until they would not jeopardize Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.  The most obvious of these taxes is the individual mandate – certified as a 100 percent bona fide tax by the Supreme Court, in the decision that allowed ObamaCare to exist at all.  President Obama has seized the extraordinary new power to selectively delay this tax for certain people – a precedent that will prove interesting if the next President also wishes to waive taxes by executive fiat.  Perhaps we should add a fourth core component of ObamaCare: it rewrote the Constitution, in the manner of a computer virus corrupting an operating system.

Returning from an early morning gym visit at nearby Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Obama’s motorcade passed a few dozen protesters holding signs with slogans including “Drones: Unethical and Illegal,” “U.S. Bases Out” and “Close Guantanamo Now.” Others expressed their opposition to genetically modified foods.

Like his supporters, US Secretary of State John Kerry has apparently been asleep for the past 20 years.

Kerry has proffered us security arrangements, which he claims will protect Israel from aggression for the long haul. They will do this, he argues, despite the fact that his plan denies the Jewish state physically defensible borders in the framework of a peace deal with the PLO.

There are several serious problems with Kerry's arrangements. But in the context of Kerry's repeated claims that his commitment to Israel's security is unqualified, their most glaring flaws are rooted in their disregard for all the lessons we have learned over the past two decades.

Kerry's security arrangements rest on three assumptions. First, they assume that the main threats Israel will face in an era of "peace" with the Palestinians will emanate from east of the Jordan River. The main two scenarios that have been raised are the threat of terrorists and advanced weaponry being smuggled across the border; and a land invasion or other type of major aggression against Israel, perpetrated by Iraqis moving across Jordan.

It is to fend off these threats, Kerry argues, that he would agree to a temporary deployment of Israeli forces in the Jordan Valley even after Israel expels all or most of the 650,000 Israeli civilians who live in Judea, Samaria and eastern, northern and southern Jerusalem.

We will consider the strategic wisdom of his plans for defending Israel from threats east of the Jordan River presently. But first we need to ask whether a threat from across the border would really be the only significant threat that Israel would face after surrendering Judea, Samaria and much of Jerusalem to the PLO.

The answer to this question is obvious to every Israeli who has been awake for the past 20 years, since Israel started down the "land for peace" road with the PLO.

The greatest threat Israel will face in an era of "peace" with the Palestinians will not come from east of the Jordan. It will come from west of the Jordan — from the Jew-free Palestinian state.

House lawmakers on Sunday disputed a new report that concludes Al Qaeda played no role in the fatal 2012 terror attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The report, published Saturday in The New York Times, found no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had a role in the assault that killed four Americans on Sept. 11, 2012, and that it appeared that the attack was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made anti-Islamic video, as the Obama administration first claimed.

“I dispute that, and the intelligence community, to a large volume, disputes that,” Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told “Fox News Sunday.”  

He also repeatedly said the story was “not accurate.”

Rogers was joined on the show by California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who said, “intelligence indicates Al Qaeda was involved.”

The findings in the New York Times story also conflict with testimony from Greg Hicks, the deputy of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was killed in the attack. Hicks described the video as "a non-event in Libya" at that time, and consequently not a significant trigger for the attack

SYRIAN’S CHEMICAL WEAPONS TO BE TRANSPORTED TO ITALY BUT MAY BE DESTROYED ON SHIP WHILST AT SEA AS THE BROKERED FOR NOT ATTACKING SYRIA BY RUSSIA AND THE US IS TO DISPOSE OF SAID CHEMICAL WEAPONS

International experts gathered in Russia on Friday approved a plan to ship Syria's most dangerous chemical weapons to Italy for their eventual destruction aboard the specially-equipped US vessel Cape Ray.

The unprecedented plan, part of a US-Russian deal for Syria to surrender its stash of more than 1,000 tonnes of chemical weapons, will see Danish and Norwegian frigates escort cargo ships loaded with the deadly agents from the Syrian port of Latakia to international waters off the coast of Italy.

But according to French NGO Robin des Bois, the plan to dispose of the chemical weapons at sea is “adventurous” and poses a serious threat to the crew and the environment.

In a report published on Thursday, Robin des Bois pointed to Cape Ray’s single hull and the absence of transverse partitions as indicators that the ship was not suited to perform such a critical task.

“Adjustments being made to the Cape Ray cannot guarantee that the ship will remain afloat should it incur severe damage,” such as a water leak or a fire, said the NGO, which is specialised in monitoring vessels and the impact of the ship-breaking process on the environment. 

'Pilot system designed for ground use'

The 200 metre-long Cape Ray is equipped with the newly developed Field Deployable Hydrolysis System (FDHS), which was designed by the Pentagon to neutralise components used in chemical weapons.

According to Robin des Bois, the FDHS is a “pilot system (…) designed for ground use”, which has never been tested before in such a vast operation.

“To attempt a first use on such a scale aboard a ship is an adventurous operation that carries multiple risks for the crew, the technicians, and the environment,” the NGO added.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer illuminates the nature of that intercession. ”The insurers understand that they’re going to be completely ruined,” Krauthammer explains. “And what’s going to happen as a result of this? There’s only one way out, a huge government bailout of the insurers is waiting at the end of next year.” More accurately, it will be a taxpayer-funded bailout, similar to the ones given to the banks and the car companies.

The American negotiators involved in the current round of “peace talks” for Israel and the Palestinian Arabs are pressuring Israeli leaders to speak out publicly in support of the U.S. positions regarding Israel’s security, according to recent Israeli media reports.

In an Israeli channel 2 news report, political correspondent Amit Segal explained that Amb. Martin Indyk, the U.S. Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations, and his team have been meeting with many Israeli military leaders, trying to convince them that the U.S. security plans for the Jordan Valley are good for Israel.

Indyk reportedly told the Israelis, essentially, that “if you support” the American position on Israeli security regarding the Jordan Valley, then “go to the media and be interviewed because they have the impression that the Israeli public has doubts about” the American plan.

One of the names mentioned in the news report was Maj. Gen. (Res.) Avi Mizrachi, who was the head of the Israeli Central Command from October, 2009 until March, 2012.

Mizrahi has already publicly stated his position that he is convinced Israeli forces must remain in the Jordan Valley. Those forces must be present in order to prevent a missile threat from foreign controlled – including Palestinian Arab – territories, as well as to bar the transfer from across the border of explosives, equipment or people who could be used in terrorist attacks.

Israel cannot trust an international force, even an American one, for the existential security of the Jewish State.

Mizrachi reportedly told the American negotiators that he sees two central flaws in the U.S. plan. First, the troops to guard the Jordan Valley must be Israeli troops, not American soldiers. Secondly, the guards must be stationed in the Jordan Valley for 50 years, not the 10 years proposed in the American plan.

The sense conveyed by Segal was the Israelis understood the “diplomatic initiative” by the U.S. to be an effort to convince the Israeli public that they should support the American proposal, even if the Israeli government does not.

Here comes the ObamaCare tax bill.

The cost of President Obama’s massive health-care law will hit Americans in 2014 as new taxes pile up on their insurance premiums and on their income-tax bills.

Most insurers aren’t advertising the ObamaCare taxes that are added on to premiums, opting instead to discretely pass them on to customers while quietly lobbying lawmakers for a break.

But one insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, laid bare the taxes on its bills with a separate line item for “Affordable Care Act Fees and Taxes.”

The new taxes on one customer’s bill added up to $23.14 a month, or $277.68 annually, according to Kaiser Health News. It boosted the monthly premium from $322.26 to $345.40 for that individual.

The new taxes and fees include a 2 percent levy on every health plan, which is expected to net about $8 billion for the government in 2014 and increase to $14.3 billion in 2018.

There’s also a $2 fee per policy that goes into a new medical-research trust fund called the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

Insurers pay a 3.5 percent user fee to sell medical plans on the HealthCare.gov Web site.

The technology President Obama is touting for coal plants to cut back on emissions is helping an unlikely source: the oil industry.

The carbon-capture technology is still locking in carbon dioxide to cut back on emissions but it is now being sold to oil companies, which pump it into oil fields as a means to force more crude to the service, according to The Associated Press.
The oil industry is using government energy money to subsidize oil production. The deal highlights "the environmental trade-off Obama is willing to make, but rarely talks about in his fight against global warming," AP writes.

On Friday, December 20, 2012, ObamaCare died. The president announced that if your health care plan was cancelled as a result of the requirements of ObamaCare, you are relieved from having to obey the individual mandate to have health insurance. He also said that a simple catastrophic policy would suffice if you chose to get one and that he would make them available through the exchanges. (In other words, if your policy was cancelled because it was not sufficiently comprehensive, you can buy one even less comprehensive and that will be okay).

But the big news, buried in his Friday afternoon press conference is the retreat from the individual mandate. Right now, the retreat only applies to individuals whose policies have been cancelled, but inevitably, next year, when cancellations of group plans cascade down on the system, these folks as well will be exempted from the individual mandate. Obama can’t exempt those with individual policies that were cancelled without exempting everyone who has been cancelled. Its not tenable politically. Either he exempts everyone or he can’t exempt anyone.

So the goal of the Tea Party and the Republicans in shutting down the government in October — the end of the individual mandate or at least its suspension for a year — has been achieved! Victory is ours!

The president trumpeted the fact that 500,000 people had enrolled through his exchanges in the first three weeks of December. But of those who enrolled through the end of November, two-thirds enrolled in Medicaid and only one-third in ObamaCare. If that 2:1 ratio holds up, it will mean that there have been only135,000 new enrollees in ObamaCare through the third week of December, bringing the total to a measly 500,000.

The Administration had predicted that 2.2 million would sign up for ObamaCare by December 15th. It missed the target by only about 80%!

The fact is that nobody wants what Obama is selling and they are not buying it. With the relaxation of the individual mandate, the signups will become ever sparser.

ObamaCare is dying from a lack of interest among the very people it was supposed to help. A New York Times survey showed that 77% of those who are currently uninsured do not approve of ObamaCare and have no intention of signing up.

With the president in full retreat and the individual mandate eroding, the end of ObamaCare is in sight!

The latest Monthly Treasury Statement, which was released on Wednesday afternoon, relies on the estimate made by the White House Office of Management and Budget to say that federal tax revenues will top $3 trillion for the first time in the nation’s history in fiscal 2014.

In fact, the record $3,023,004,000,000 in tax revenues that the White House is predicting the federal government will rake in during fiscal 2014 not only exceeds the inflation-adjusted revenue taken in by the government in any previous year, it also equals $29,673 in tax revenue for every full-time worker in the country.

The US president began 2013 with a soaring inaugural address laying out an ambitious second term agenda, sensing a mandate for liberal transformation despite a joyless re-election campaign.

He ended it with a ponderous press conference, deflecting dire assessments of his prospects and gingerly testing an optimistic message for 2014: "We are poised to do really good things."

Second term presidencies are always tough, as exhaustion, unmet promises and fading political zeal humble exhausted administrations.

A provision cutting the pensions of military retirees in the bipartisan budget deal that the Senate will vote on this week does not exempt disabled veterans, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
Disabled retirees were previously thought to be exempt from the changes to military retiree pay, which could cost servicemembers up to $124,000 over a 20-year period.
The Free Beacon previously reported that military retirees under the age of 62 would receive 1 percentage point less in their annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the plan crafted by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D., Wash.).
The section of the U.S. code that has been altered also applies to disabled servicemembers, many of whom have been wounded in combat.
