On Christmas Day at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, followed by a White House press release on Dec. 28, President Obama announced the end of the war in Afghanistan. “We’ve been in continuous war now for almost thirteen years—over 13 years,” he said, “and next week we will be ending our combat mission in Afghanistan. Obviously, because of the extraordinary service of the men and women in the American armed forces, Afghanistan has a chance to rebuild its own country. We are safer. It’s not going to be a source of terrorist attacks again,” he added.

If that message sounds familiar, it’s because virtually the same message was delivered on Dec. 14, 2011 at Fort Bragg, NC. That’s when Obama announced that “America’s war in Iraq will be over” and that “we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant” nation. That would be the same Iraq where, swiftly after Obama’s precipitous military withdrawal, Islamic militants embarked on a barbaric campaign of terror, seizing large swaths of Iraqi territory and wiping out much of the security gains achieved through the loss of thousands of American lives in that country.

A South Korean satellite could come close to space debris, officials said Saturday, prompting officials and space experts to come up with measures to avoid a possible collision.
The move came a day after the U.S. authorities warned of a possible collision between South Korea's Science and Technology Satellite 3 and a piece of debris measuring 20 centimeters in size.
The debris is one of thousands of pieces of debris produced by the 2009 collision between an inactive Russian communications satellite and an active U.S. commercial communications satellite.
The South Korean satellite could come as close as 23 meters to the debris above the Greenland Sea around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the South Korean officials handling the issue.

I don’t mean that as a knock on President Obama. No president “runs” America because the government doesn’t run America — and the president barely runs the government. He can scarcely tell his own employees what to do. When Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., was running for president in 2012, Time magazine came out with particularly snarky criticism of one of her campaign promises.

On Aug. 18, 2011, in an article titled “Why Michele Bachmann’s $2-a-Gallon Gas Promise Is a Fantasy,” Time senior writer and energy expert Bryan Walsh mocked the congresswoman for pledging, “Under President Bachmann, you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again. That will happen.”

“On Wednesday Michele Bachmann said something that’s just very, very wrong,” Walsh quipped. “Which isn’t unusual in and of itself but is something that needs to be debunked.”

Continuing his derision, Walsh wrote, “If you see sub-$2-a-gallon gas again, I strongly suggest that you stock up on bottled water and canned tuna, because the economic end times may be at hand.”

As gas prices have plummeted across the country in 2014 and the early days of 2015, however, Bachmann noticed – despite no “economic end times at hand” – that in many places gas has indeed fallen below $2 a gallon.

Tickets sold out during the weekend, and over 90 percent were sold on weekdays except for the first showing in the morning.
Many moviegoers were people in their 50s and over who are the first-generation immigrants, the company said.
The movie portrays a man's life through historical events spanning more than 50 years including the Korean War in the 1950s, sending troops to the Vietnam War and coal miners and nurses to Germany in the 1960s and nationwide campaign to reunite families separated during the Korean War in the 1980s. It seems to remind older expats of their own past of struggle to survive in a foreign country.

A key measure of hospital emergency room use in Los Angeles County shows continued growth during the first six months of Obamacare, but also points to shifting patterns of where patients are choosing to receive urgent medical treatment.

With the healthcare expansion last year, many are watching how the Affordable Care Act affects emergency room use.

President Obama has promised his signature health law will gradually reduce expensive ER visits as access to other kinds of care is expanded. Critics contend newly insured patients — especially those enrolled in Medi-Cal, the state's low-income health program that picks up most patient costs — aren't likely to seek care elsewhere, and will overwhelm emergency rooms.

Neither of those outcomes were clearly evident in the first months of the new healthcare system's operation in Los Angeles County, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis.

Data hospitals report to the state show that as insurance coverage was extended to hundreds of thousands of residents, ER visits for ailments not serious enough to require an admission grew 3.9% in the county in the first half of 2014, compared with the same period the previous year. The growth is in line with annual increases of 3% to 5% in the three years prior to the federal healthcare overhaul.

Despite little rise in overall emergency room use, the analysis found some significant changes in the distribution of those outpatient ER visits.

The county's three large public hospitals, which historically have cared for many uninsured patients, recorded a 9% drop in such cases. At the same time, several private hospitals reported double-digit percentage increases in outpatient visits, the analysis found.

What the uneven and changing usage patterns mean — and whether they signal the beginning of a long-term rearrangement of how patients will seek treatment — is not yet clear.

Shannon McConville, a health policy researcher at the Public Policy Institute of California, said the slight growth in visits not leading to an admission — generally considered less serious cases that include those that Obamacare aims to divert away from emergency rooms — was "good news."

In addition, several private hospitals said they have, at least for now, been able to handle increases in ER patient visits.

The pace of agencies issuing new rules and regulations has hit a record high under President Obama, whose administration’s rules have filled 468,500 pages in the Federal Register.

And, according to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the president is poised to unleash another 2,375 new rules on American businesses without first giving Congress an up or down vote.

CEI’s Clyde Wayne Crews, vice president for policy, told Secrets Wednesday that of the top six biggest Federal Register page tallies since 2002, the Obama administration owns five. This year, he said, the Federal Register ended up printing 79,066 pages — 78,978 when blank pages are removed.

 

The Federal Register is a daily publication of federal issues proposed and final administrative regulations of federal agencies.

Crews, in a new report provided to Secrets, said that this year’s total for final rules and regulations spelled out in the Federal Register was 3,541. Of the 3,541 final rules, 659 are expected to have an impact on small businesses.

From November 2013 through November 2014, the aggregate balance in the federal direct student loan program--as reported by the Monthly Treasury Statement--rose from $687,149,000,000 to $806,561,000,000, a one-year jump of $119,412,000,000.

The balance on all student loans, including those from private sources, exceeded a trillion dollars as of the end of the third quarter, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

"Outstanding student loan balances reported on credit reports increased to $1.13 trillion (an increase of $8 billion) as of September 30, 2014, representing about $100 billion increase from one year ago," the bank said in its latest report on household debt and credit.

Seven years ago, in November 2007, the aggregate balance in the federal direct student loan program was only $98,529,000,000. Since then, it has grown by $708,032,000,000.

The Defense Department announced Wednesday that five more prisoners will be transferred out of Guantanamo Bay to another nation, in the latest step by the Obama administration to whittle down the prisoner population in pursuit of ultimately closing the camp. 

The five men will be transferred to the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan for resettlement, the U.S. government announced. 

The two men from Tunisia and three from Yemen -- who have been at the camp for a dozen years -- had been cleared for release from the prison by a government task force but could not be sent to their homelands. The U.S. has sent hundreds of prisoners from Guantanamo to third countries but this is the first time Kazakhstan has accepted any for resettlement. 

Their release brings the prison population at Guantanamo to 127, according to a Pentagon statement on Tuesday. 

The transfer appears to be the latest step in the administration's strategy to rapidly bring down the prison population at Guantanamo, potentially to under 100, so that the White House can make a more aggressive argument to Congress that the camp should be closed. Congress continues to block Guantanamo prisoners from being brought for detention on the U.S. mainland. 

Many vocal critics of the administration's push to close the camp, though, have not backed off their concerns. And the accelerated prisoner transfers have raised additional security concerns. 

All the prisoners being transferred to Kazakhstan had been captured in Pakistan and turned over to the U.S. for detention as suspected Islamic militants with ties to Al Qaeda. 

The U.S. identified the Yemenis as Asim Thabit Abdullah Al-Khalaqi, who is about 46; Muhammad Ali Husayn Khanayna, who is about 36; and Sabri Mohammad al Qurashi, about 44. 

According to a 2007 Defense document, posted on The New York Times website, Al-Khalaqi was "assessed" to be part of Al Qaeda and was captured alongside an Al Qaeda commander at Tora Bora. 

Al Qurashi, likewise, allegedly got "militant training" at an Al Qaeda training camp and was arrested at an Al Qaeda safe house. Both were assessed to be "medium risk." 

The U.S. identified the Tunisians as 49-year-old Adel Al-Hakeemy, and Abdallah Bin Ali al Lufti, who military records show is about 48. 

None of the men were ever charged and a government task force determined it was no longer necessary to hold them.

A U.S. law firm has acquired video footage showing a female McDonald's employee beating a Korean man in his 60s with a broomstick and refusing to serve him.
In the closed circuit video feed, the woman behind the counter yells at the man waiting in line. He then begins to record the incident with his mobile phone. The woman charges at him and hits him with a broomstick while he tries to defend himself.
The incident was filmed in New York City at about 5 p.m. on Feb. 16.
James Jin Kim, 62, the man in the video, hired New York-based law firm Kim & Bae in April and sued the fast food chain for $10 million for verbal and physical abuse, online news outlets reported on Tuesday.

A FLIGHT attendant on the doomed AirAsia plane posted a haunting message to her lover just two weeks before the crash saying, “I love you from the 38,000 feet”.

In one of her last posts on social media, Khairunnisa Haidar Fauzi, 22, also known as Nisa, posted a picture of the note on her Instagram account.

The note was written on a napkin and placed on a cabin window.

It is thought to have been addressed to her boyfriend, Divo, who is mentioned in several of her posts, most recently with their names engraved in sand on a beach.

Korea's prosecution system is drawing Asian attention for its war on corruption, which has sometimes led to the relatives of former presidents being jailed while the leaders were in power.
Since 2010, several delegations from Asia and the Middle East have visited the Supreme Prosecutors' Office (SPO) in Seocho-dong, Seoul.
In 2014, 136 law enforcement officials from 26 countries visited the SPO for a close look at its digital investigation environment and knowhow.
SPO Criminal Justice Policy chief Kim Jin-suk said some delegations were curious about Korea's experience in fighting corruption, and some were struck by the state-of-the-art scientific investigation equipment.
The prosecutor said the latest visitors were prosecutors from the southeastern China province of Fujian.
"Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched a massive anti-corruption drive since he took power in 2013," she said.
"I was told that prosecutors in China are not allowed to investigate criminal cases as powerful Chinese public security officials, who are equivalent to police in Korea, dominate the legal process, including investigations.
"Chinese delegates appeared to be impressed by the Korean prosecution system as prosecutors here are allowed to investigate cases and are in a position to supervise the police."
Her remarks were construed as meaning that no entity can control public security officials in China and this provided a loophole for abuses of power.

The World Health Organization said Saturday that the Ebola death toll has reached almost 7,000, up more than 1,000 since the last report two days earlier.
WHO officials attributed the sudden, sharp rise in the number of Ebola fatalities to a large number of previously unreported deaths.
The organization said a little more than 16,000 people have been diagnosed with the disease since March. All but a handful of cases are in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Officials said the spread of the disease has slowed in Liberia but has increased in Sierra Leone.
Meanwhile, a doctor from Sierra Leone who caught Ebola while treating victims was remembered Saturday at a memorial service outside Washington.
Dr. Martin Salia died in an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital November 17.
Among those paying tribute to Salia was the head of the White House Ebola team, Ron Klain, who read a note from President Barack Obama that called the doctor a hero who chose to face danger to help others.

Carbon dioxide emissions help tropical rainforests grow faster: Study shows trees absorb more greenhouse gas than expected

Tropical forests are growing faster than scientists thought due to rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

A Nasa-led study has found that tropical forests are absorbing 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year as they photosynthesise and grow.

And this is far more than is absorbed by the vast areas of boreal forest that encircle the Arctic.

The researchers claim their findings show that rainforests like the Amazon are essential for soaking up excess greenhouse gases, and play a far greater role than had been previously realised.

Dr David Schimel, a researcher at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, who led the study, said: 'This is good news, because uptake in boreal forests is already slowing, while tropical forests may continue to take up carbon for many years.'

Knowing this background, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Obama has recently committed to work with two US Islamic groups that have ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. According to the FBI, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society (MAS) both serve as front groups to help funnel money and information to the Islamic terrorist groups.

Not only does the FBI list them as having ties to terrorists, but the United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently listed both CAIR and MAS as being foreign terrorist groups. The UAE has outlawed both groups from operating in their country.

But none of this makes a difference to Barack HUSSEIN Obama. He recently met with leaders of CAIR and MAS and agreed to work together to fight the decision of the UAE in listing them as terrorist organizations. In 2009 our own FBI cut all ties with CAIR because they were not an appropriate group to be associated with.

Taking America off a permanent war footing is proving harder than President Obama may have suggested.

U.S. troops are back in Iraq, the endgame in Afghanistan is requiring more troops — and perhaps more risks — than once expected and Obama is saddled with a worsening, high-stakes conflict in Syria.

Last spring, Obama described to newly minted Army officers at West Point how "the landscape has changed" after a decade of war. He cited then-dwindling conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. President Barack Obama's golf outing in Hawaii forced a pair of soon-to-be-newlyweds to relocate their picturesque wedding, Bloomberg Politics reports. Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr., both captains in the Army, were scheduled to be married Sunday near the 16th hole at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Knowing the Obamas spend their Christmas vacation there, the pair had invited the president to attend their ceremony. Not surprisingly, they received a letter on Saturday morning from the White House saying the commander in chief regretfully could not attend and wishing them well. More troubling, however, was when hours later, during their wedding rehearsal, the couple was informed they'd have to move the ceremony because the president was playing there.

“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue's sister, told Bloomberg Politics. “It was emotional, especially for her — she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”

But President Obama came to her emotional rescue, placing a personal phone to the bride, an officer with the U.S. Army's 29th Engineer Battalion in Haleiwa.

The Iranian regime hanged seven citizens on Christmas morning and at least 12 others in the days before and after the holiday, according to Iranian dissidents monitoring the human rights situation.

Seven prisoners being held in Iran’s Abdelebad prison were hanged “at dawn on Christmas day,” according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an Iranian opposition group.

The latest round of state-sanctioned killings—which have hit an all time high in the past year—came just days after President Barack Obama praised Iran in an interview at the White House and said that it could be a “successful” member of the international community.

Obama claimed that Iran can be a “very successful regional power” if it decides to relinquish some portions of its contested nuclear weapons program, according to the interview, which was conducted with NPR.

”They’ve got a chance to get right with the world,” Obama was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, in the days leading up to Christmas, Iran “secretly hanged” another 10 prisoners who were being held in one of the regime’s most infamous and brutal prisons, according to the NCRI.

Iran also has been reportedly assisting the United States in recent days in its fight against the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq.

Ezell Ford was shot three times in his right side, right arm and back, according to the report that also says a muzzle imprint was found around the back wound and that Ford had abrasions to his left hand, forearm and elbow. The report was disclosed after police initially ordered the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner to withhold the results for months to avoid tainting potential witness statements.

Ford was unarmed when police confronted him on Aug. 11 on a street near his home. Police said officers tried to speak to him but got into a struggle with Ford and shot him when he tried to grab an officer’s gun.

Police Chief Charlie Beck said officers reported that Ford attracted their attention with suspicious actions then knocked one officer to the ground. Ford was atop the officer and grappling for the officers’ holstered weapon when his partner fired two shots and the fallen officer pulled a backup gun and shot Ford in the back, according to an account read by Beck on Monday.

In a surprise move towards the year's end, South Korea proposed Monday to meet with North Korea for talks sometime in January.
"The Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation officially proposed talks on issues of mutual interest between South and North Korea. We hope to heal the wounds of war-separated families before the Lunar New Year holiday."
South Korean Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae said the talks would center on the issues discussed by the unification preparatory committee this year and its plans for next year, which marks the 70th year of the division of the Korean peninsula.
Some key plans include expanding people-to-people exchanges through sporting events, such as a soccer match between the two Koreas.
The committee also plans to work towards holding family reunions on a regular basis and allowing for the exchange of letters.
While some doubt a positive response from North Korea, saying the regime was never a fan of President Park's unification preparation committee, others remain hopeful.
"There are members of the committee that have visited the North. They say North Korea's assessment of the unification preparatory committee has not been positive or negative. We hope North Korea accepts our proposal."
Analysts say Pyongyang will want to make some progress with Seoul in time for the 70th year of their division next year and that Kim Jong-un will likely express his willingness to do so in his New Year's speech on January 1st.

A towering dam in central China holds back a vast expanse of water destined to travel over 1,000 kilometers north to Beijing, but critics say it will only temporarily quench the capital’s thirst.
The city is expected Saturday to receive its first flows from the South North Water Diversion Project, one of the most ambitious engineering projects in Chinese history.
After decades of planning and at least $33 billion of investment, over a billion cubic meters of water will flow from the Danjiangkou reservoir to the capital every year, through more than 1,200 kilometers of channels and pipes ― the distance from London to Madrid.
Another 8.5 billion cubic meters ― equivalent to 3.4 million Olympic-sized swimming pools ― will reach provinces along the way, planners say.
The Chinese government says the project, which will ultimately have three routes and an estimated $81 billion total cost, will solve a chronic shortage in China’s northern cities.
Water availability per person in Beijing is on a par with Middle Eastern countries such as Israel, threatening economic growth, a key source of support for China’s ruling Communist party.
“This water needs to go to the North,” said a tour guide at the reservoir surnamed Chen, standing atop the 110-meter-high dam at the reservoir in the central province of Hubei, fed by the Han and Dan rivers……

The steady progress being made at Shin-Hanul nuclear power plant unit 1 has made it clear that Korea will soon have its first fully indigenously built nuclear facility.
According to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, the nation’s nuclear reactor operator, the Shin-Hanul plant in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, will become the first to be equipped with an indigenous advanced pressurized reactor that can generate up to 1,400 megawatts of energy.
This reactor will form the climax of Korea’s nuclear power generation history that dates back to 1978, when atomic power was introduced to the country through the Kori power plant constructed by French companies and technicians. 

Commercial operation of the Shin-Hanul plant unit 1 is scheduled to start in December 2015, while unit 2 is slated for the end of 2016, according to the KHNP.

“There will be mild adjustments (made to the reactors) because the UAE’s climate is hotter and drier than that of Korea, but they will otherwise be identical,” said Kim Kyoung-tae of the KHNP.
Korean companies in 2009 landed a $20 billion deal to build four nuclear power plants in the UAE, marking Korea’s first successful export of a nuclear power plant. The first unit in the UAE’s Barakah region is scheduled to begin supplying power in 2017.

The men behind Obama took a calculated gamble in 2008 that the nation was ready for the first post-American president, a man with no meaningful cultural roots in the nation he would profess to lead.  They relied on the intrinsic good-heartedness of the electorate to show their lack of prejudice in voting for a man with an exotic Arabic/Muslim name only seven years after the atrocity of Sept. 11. They counted on the innate good will of the American people, judged that the time was right for a black president, and then went out and found the only half-black candidate who had absolutely nothing to do with the black American experience and ran him as an avatar of black America.

And they won, twice, both times against half-hearted Republican candidates with no skin in the game, married to interchangeable blonde wives — one a half-crazy former prisoner of war/political accommodationist and the other a Mormon whose religious faith was guaranteed to lose him some much-needed votes. If they had tried to throw both elections, they could not have done a better job, both of them refusing to go after Obama head-on, and neither of them apparently realizing the danger he posed to the republic. Neither could fathom a new kind of Democrat candidate, one who observed the surface appearances of  a traditional candidacy, but who was brimming with new, extra-Constitutional ideas about how to effect his political program. 

Shortly before his first election, the president promised a “fundamental transformation” of the United States of America, and it is instructive to note the tone in which he made that pledge. Listen, please; it only takes a few seconds:

Note the finger-pointing. Check out the saturnine look on his face. America was warned, early on, that beneath the smiling facade of Barack Hussein Obama was a very angry man. The smile and the shoeshine got him elected but since that day he has waged unremitting war on the country as founded, pillorying the nation, putting it in the dock, and making us all atone for its sins. Obama’s is a presidency-as-payback, and the “transformation” is meant to ensure that it ispermanently hobbled. The animus positively radiates from him.

President Obama is responding to a drubbing in the midterm elections with action. So far, it's paying off.

Obama's poll numbers — which had previously slid into the low 40’s — are up, and the president has enjoyed a streak of good headlines.

Those factors, coupled with a rising economy, are making the White House optimistic about his final two years in office.

White House allies say the president feels an increased sense of liberation with the elections over. They predict that he will continue to be proactive in the face of the Republican Congress that will take power early next year. 

After a mostly lackluster 2014, Obama was able to score a series of wins in the last six weeks by going on the offensive with a string of executive actions, a hitherto-secret plan to normalize relations with Cuba and a satisfying compromise on the omnibus.

“He doesn't feel constrained anymore,” said Steve Elmendorf, the prominent Democratic lobbyist and veteran of Capitol Hill. “I think he felt constrained before the election, a little too constrained, to protect vulnerable senators. Now he has a little more breathing room.”

A former senior administration official said that a more confident Obama has emerged since the midterm dustup: the one who hates to lose. While political pundits and others in the Beltway have been portraying him as a lame duck, Obama has fought back against that notion, the official said.

Egypt has banned the Hollywood biblical epic movie “Exodus: Gods and Kings” citing historical inaccuracies, the culture minister said Friday, a day after a similar move by Morocco.
The film relates how Moses helped Israelite slaves flee persecution in Egypt under the Pharaoh Ramses by parting the Red Sea to let them cross safely.
Culture Minister Gaber Asfour told AFP Ridley Scott’s blockbuster was rife with mistakes, including an apparent claim that “Moses and the Jews built the pyramids.”
“This totally contradicts proven historical facts,” Asfour said.
“It is a Zionist film,” he said. “It gives a Zionist view of history and contains historical inaccuracies and that’s why we have decided to ban it.”
The ban was decided by a committee comprising the head of the supreme council for culture, Mohammed Afifi, the head of the censorship committee and two history professors, said Asfour.
Afifi said he took issue with the scene showing the parting of the Red Sea in which Moses ― a prophet revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike ― is seen holding a “sword” like a warrior, instead of a “stick.”
