U.S. gasoline prices have jumped to the highest levels ever for the middle of February. The national average hit $3.127 per gallon on Friday, about 50 cents above a year ago.

The price is about 6 percent higher than on this date in 2008. The next day, pump prices began a string of 32 gains over 34 days. They rose 39 percent over five months, eventually hitting an all-time high of $4.11 per gallon in July.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) slammed what she called a “de facto moratorium” on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico late Saturday night amid news that a major shallow-water driller filed for bankruptcy.

Landrieu, an outspoken critic of the Obama administration’s offshore drilling policies, blamed the Interior Department’s “excruciatingly slow release of oil and gas permits” for the company’s hard times.


“How many more rigs have to leave and how many more businesses have to close before it realizes the havoc the de facto moratorium is wrecking on the Gulf Coast? When these businesses close, people lose good paying jobs, our communities erode and our unique culture disappears,” Landrieu said in a statement.

The Obama administration imposed a moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in the aftermath of last year’s massive oil spill. The moratorium has since been lifted, but Landrieu and other drill-state lawmakers say drillers are operating under a “de facto moratorium” because no deepwater drilling permits have been issued.

The belief Maher apparently holds – that Obama isn’t actually a Christian, but merely pretends to be one to keep up appearances for the sake of his political career – strikes us as one of the most cynical things anyone could possibly believe about Obama.

10 Reasons Why the Latest Unemployment Numbers Are No Reason to Cheer

1) According to CNBC, economists were expecting the U.S. economy to add 145,000 jobs during January. Obviously the 36,000 figure was a huge disappointment.

2) Approximately 150,000 jobs need to be added to the economy each month just to keep up with population growth.

3) The government jobs report also indicated that 504,000 Americans "dropped out of the labor force" in January. That may make the unemployment numbers look better, but the truth is that the vast majority of those 500,000 Americans still need incomes and still need jobs. 4) According to the latest numbers from Gallup, the unemployment rate actually increased to 9.8% at the end of January.

5) Gallup's measure of "underemployment" (those that are unemployed plus those that are working part-time but want full-time employment) was sitting at 18.9% at the end of January.

6) As I reported, there are approximately 28 million Americans that would like full-time jobs but that don't have full-time jobs.

7) According to Zero Hedge, the number of Americans that are "not in the labor force" but that would like a job right now has hit an all-time record high. If you add all of those people into the official unemployment figure it would jump to 12.8%.

8) According to Calculated Risk, this is the deepest and most brutal employment downturn that the United States has experienced since World War II. The current employment downturn started 37 months ago and there doesn't seem to be any indication that we will return to pre-recession levels any time soon.

9) The U.S. Labor Department has also announced that job growth during 2010 was much weaker than they had previously reported. The numbers for eight months were revised down, and the numbers for four months were revised up. After all of the revisions are accounted for, it turns out that a total of 215,000 fewer jobs were created during 2010 than originally calculated.

10) According to one brand new survey, four out of every 10 Americans are struggling "a lot" to pay the bills right now.

A federal judge in Florida recently ruled that the entire health care law is unconstitutional – a ruling Judge Roger Vinson described as “the functional equivalent of an injunction.” But that hasn't stopped the Obama administration from spending hundreds of millions of dollars authorized by the disputed law.
On Wednesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a $750 million investment in prevention and public health -- funded through the Prevention and Public Health Fund, which was created by the new health care law.
The $750 million builds on a $500 million investment last year, she 
noted.

Months after top New York City officials expressed intense behind-the-scenes frustration at the security vulnerabilities at the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, the U.N. is now planning to spend $100 million — donated by the U.S. — on the upgrade.


That has created a new controversy: critics want to know why the U.S. is footing the entire bill, and why that money is not being credited against U.S. dues for the following year.

“If the U.S. overpays the U.N., those funds should be returned in full to the U.S. Treasury,” declared Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who heads the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “To allow the U.N. to redirect those U.S. taxpayer dollars for unrelated projects is unjustifiable.” Moreover, she says, “by allowing the U.N. to reap the U.S. surplus as a slush fund for construction, the State Department wants to stick U.S. taxpayers with 100 percent of the cost, instead of the 22 percent that the U.S. would be responsible for under normal procedures.”


Ros-Lehtinen is leading a charge in the House of Representatives Wednesday, with a bill that demands the U.N. refund not only the $100 million but the entire $179 million overpayment collected from the U.S. for the United Nations Tax Equalization Fund (TEF), an obscure financial device used to reimburse U.S. citizens who work for the U.N. for U.S. income taxes they pay. (The U.S. is the only major country to levy income taxes on U.N. salaries.)

Ros-Lehtinen calls the refund demand “a small step toward restoring sanity to our U.N. policy and government spending.”

A veteran attorney who has pursued a lawsuit challenging Barack Obama's presidential eligibility since he was elected is telling the U.S. Supreme Court that if its members continue to "avoid" the dispute they effectively will "destroy the constitutional rule of law basis of our legal system."


The order on Jan. 18 from the high court simply listed case 10-678, Hollister, Gregory S. v. Soetoro, Barry, et al as "denied" with no explanation.

It appears from the court's documentation that Kagan and Sotomayor participated in the "conference," the meeting at which Supreme Court justices determine which cases they will take. On other cases there are notations that Kagan or Sotomayor did not participate, and the Hollister case is without any such reference.

Although proceedings are not public, it is believed that a case must earn four votes among the nine justices before it is heard.

A handful of moderate Senate Democrats are looking for ways to roll back the highly contentious individual mandate — the pillar of President Barack Obama’s health care law — a sign that red-state senators are prepared to assert their independence ahead of the 2012 elections.

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) chided Tea Party activists in his state, telling them to "get real" about their opposition to the New START treaty.

Lugar, who voted for the treaty's ratification late last year, dismissed the Tea Party's criticism of his vote. He's expected to face a primary challenge from the conservative movement.


"I've got to say 'Get real,'" Lugar told an Indiana CBS affiliate. "I hear Tea Party or other people talking about they were against START. I said, 'Well, now, hang on here.'"

Lugar has said he expects a challenge from the Tea Party, and is gearing up to fight in that race to secure a nomination for another term.

"I don't think I've ever been involved in a campaign for a statewide office that started the whole year before the year," he said. "But nevertheless, here we are and we're very competitive."


The Indiana Republican isn't the only veteran senator preparing himself for a possible conservative challenger in a primary; Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is also expecting a challenge, and has been bracing himself for it.

But Lugar and Hatch have taken very different approaches so far. While the Hoosier is clashing publicly with the Tea Party, Hatch will participate in an online town hall on Tuesday evening organized with a Tea Party umbrella group.

When we have an administration more concerned about rewarding its union cronies than the U.S. Constitution (see ObamaCare for reference), giving union bosses access to the wallets of TSOs was only a matter of time. Now, the Transportation Security Agency’s blue shirts who are doing Janet Napolitiano’s bidding frisking, groping, molesting and seemingly sexually assaulting the American public, are about to get license for further abuse—a union card.


In a significant victory for federal employee unions, the Federal Labor Relations Authority decided Friday that Transportation Security Administration staffers will be allowed to vote on union representation.

The decision clears the way for a campaign by the government’s two largest labor organizations, the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union, to represent some 50,000 transportation security officers.

President Obama on Monday implored U.S. businesses to “get in the game” and invest the $2 trillion they hold in reserves in the U.S. economy.

“We are not out here laying people off for the fun of it,” said Harold Jackson, the CEO of a medical equipment provider based in Colorado. Jackson said he would love to hire back 15 of his once 30-person-strong workforce. The problem is capital is still not flowing.

But Jackson, the CEO of the medical equipment provider, complained new regulations from Obama’s healthcare law and other legislation were forcing industry to raise prices. He also said that small-business tax credits introduced by the White House don’t help larger companies like his own.

DEMS ARE COMPLAINING WHEN THE PASSED PATIENT BILL (BHOCARE) ALLOWED FOR PROVISIONS TO ALLOW TAX MONEY TO PAY FOR ABORTIONS WHICH IS AGAINST CURRENT LAWS AS DECIDED UPON BY CONGRESS IN PREVIOUS LEGISLATION. NOT TO MENTION THAT DEATH PANELS ARE INVOKED IN THIS SAME BHOCARE TO DECIDE WHEN YOU WILL DIE AT AN OLD AGE. SO DEMS PREFER THAT THEY CONTROL WHO SHOULD DIE AT BIRTH AND WHO SHOULD DIE AT AN OLD AGE.

Writing for the website of EMILY’s List, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) accused House Republicans of pulling a “bait and switch” by focusing early on anti-abortion legislation instead of the economy.

The abortion battle heats up this week, with the House set to have hearings on two new bills that would place new restrictions on abortions. On Tuesday, the Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which seeks to eliminate federal funding for abortion. On Wednesday, the Energy and Commerce Committee’s health subpanel will take up the Protect Life Act, which specifies that the sweeping healthcare reform law cannot fund abortion.

Those groups are now objecting to language that would allow a provider to deny abortion care based on personal views. The groups say the language would allow a doctor to deny life-saving abortion care in emergency situations, but anti-abortion lawmakers say the legislation is consistent with previous “conscience rights” protections approved by Congress.
