TIZEN Z1 FROM SAMSUNG IS HUGE IN INDIA AS THE LOW BUDGET SMARTPHONE TAKES OFF IN SALES–YET TO BE INTRODUCED TO THE WEST

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics topped a smartphone sales chart in the first quarter of 2015 in Bangladesh with its budget smartphone, the Z1, according to research data Monday.
A report released by research firm Counterpoint showed that the Z1, running on the Tizen operating system, enjoyed robust sales in the January-March period and was “the No. 1 smartphone model in the entire country.”
The feat came as a surprise, since it was achieved on the home turf of phone-maker Symphony Mobile.
The Bangladeshi handset-maker held a 36.6 percent market share in mobile phone shipments and a 38 percent share of smartphone shipments in the first quarter. Samsung came second with 7.2 percent in mobile phone shipments and 23.4 percent in smartphone shipments, followed by Walton and Microsoft, which snagged 9.5 percent and 5.4-percent market shares, respectively.
Samsung has recently been pushing to grow the Tizen operating system, which was jointly deployed by the firm’s allies including Intel and NTT Docomo to counter the duopoly of Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS in the global smartphone market.
Following the launch of the Z1 in India this January, the budget smartphone was released in Bangladesh in February.
Samsung has reportedly shipped 500,000 units of the Tizen-based handset as of May, and sold 20,000 units in the first week after the launch in Bangladesh.
The company has also been paving the way for the worldwide launch of the Z1 as it has made the Tizen Store, an application market, available for developers and users in 182 countries.
The Tizen-powered handset Z1, however, is still only available in India and Bangladesh.

A Florida judge has set a trial date in the racketeering case against the Clinton Foundation and Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Judge Donald Middlebrooks of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida ordered the racketeering, influenced and corrupt organizations, or RICO, case to head to trial January 20, 2016.
The order, entered Friday and obtained by the Washington Examiner, came days after Larry Klayman of Freedom of Watch filed a lengthy civil complaint against the Clintons and their foundation in the same court.
While the Clinton legal team could settle the case or enter a variety of motions in an effort to derail the lawsuit before the trial, the judge's swift decision means the matter could go to court before the Feb. 1 Iowa caucus and Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary.
Klayman, who has filed dozens of lawsuits against the Clintons and other prominent politicians, suggested the former first couple and their family philanthropy used their political clout to drum up foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation and lavish diplomatic favors for contributors while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.

Ricketts said Friday that he doesn't plan to cancel a shipment of lethal injection drugs that the state bought earlier this month.
The GOP-controlled Legislature this week approved a law repealing the death penalty over the governor's veto. The law doesn't go into effect for three months.
Atty. Gen. Doug Peterson has raised questions about whether it unconstitutionally changes the sentences of current death row inmates to life in prison.
Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, the law's lead sponsor, has said it's constitutional.
Chambers said the Legislature can't change a prisoner's sentence, but his law eliminates the state's authority to carry out executions.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch has been put up for sale.
The California property that once served as Michael Jackson's home and personal fantasyland is being listed at $100 million (NZD$140m), according to the Wall Street Journal.
The 2,700-acre ranch in Santa Ynez Valley features such amenities as a train station, six-bedroom house, 50-seat movie theater and a pair of lakes, It has been in limbo since Jackson's death in 2009.
Jackson originally paid $19.5 million for the oak- and sycamore-studded property in 1988 and rechristened it Neverland after Peter Pan's island dwelling. He soon added such over-the-top amenities as a zoo and small amusement park, which have since been removed.

A SEVEN-year-old Australian boy who horrified the world when he was photographed holding the severed head of a Syrian soldier by the hair has created a quandary for the Federal Government, which wants to make scores of Australian fighters in the Middle East someone else’s problem by revoking their citizenship.
News that the boy’s mother has had enough of the horrors of Syria and wants to bring her five children back home to Sydney prompted questions about how governments should protect their own citizens and where to draw the line between terrorists and their victims.
Sydney-born convicted terrorist Khaled Sharrouf posted a photo on his Twitter account from Syria of his youngest son with his extended arms straining under the weight of the gruesome trophy.
But dual nationals fighting with groups such as Islamic State would be taken back by Australia if their citizenship was stripped by another country, even if they were known to be committing acts of terrorism, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says.
As the Federal Government debates whether to allow dual citizens to be stripped of their right to be Australian, Mr Dutton conceded Australia had a legal obligation to accept back individuals if their citizenship is revoked by another jurisdiction.
“We have a constitutional obligation to provide citizenship to that person,” Mr Dutton told Sky News.
“If that person has dual citizenship they will fall back to that citizenship but if they’re to be rendered stateless, as I’ve said clearly, in that situation we’re not going to allow that to happen.” The plan to revoke the citizenship of dual nationals, flagged by Prime Minister Tony Abbott would give discretion on making decisions to Mr Dutton.
The Australian legislation is based on similar laws in the UK.

The United States removed Cuba from its list of states sponsoring terrorism Friday as the two countries are working to restore full diplomatic relations after decades of hostility.
The decision is the latest in a series of conciliatory moves the U.S. has taken after announcing in December that it would restore diplomatic ties with the Caribbean nation after more than half a century of estrangement.
"The secretary of state has made the final decision to rescind Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, effective today," Jeff Rathke, a State Department spokesman, said in a statement, adding that the decision "reflects our assessment that Cuba meets the statutory criteria for rescission."
Removal from the terror sponsor list has been a key demand from Cuba. Friday's decision is expected to give a spur to efforts to normalize diplomatic ties, including opening embassies in each other's capital and returning ambassadors.
The United States cut off diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1960 after Fidel Castro took power in a coup in 1959. The U.S. also imposed a trade embargo in 1960 and put the country on the list of terror sponsors in 1982 for supporting armed groups in Latin America.

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut say they’re getting rid of artificial colors and flavors, making them the latest big food companies scrambling to distance themselves from ingredients people might find unappetizing.
Instead of “black pepper flavor,” for instance, Taco Bell will start using actual black pepper in its seasoned beef, says Liz Matthews, the chain’s chief food innovation officer.
The Mexican-style chain also says the artificial dye Yellow No. 6 will be removed from its nacho cheese, Blue No. 1 will be removed from its avocado ranch dressing and carmine, a bright pigment, will be removed from its red tortilla strips.
Matthews said some of the new recipes are being tested in select markets and should be in stores nationally by the end of the year.

You may have read recently that the oil industry is once again looking to drill off Florida’s Gulf Coast. In fact, earlier this month a group of senators from Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi filed legislation to lift the current drilling ban and allow oil rigs to move as close as 50 miles off Florida.
We all saw what happened when the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded just 49 miles off Louisiana’s coast five years ago.
At some point, folks need to ignore Big Oil's greed and simply do what’s right. In response to this latest threat, I filed legislation last week to not only keep the current drilling ban I passed in 2006, but to extend it for another five years – from 2022 until 2027.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on his countrymen to refocus on the Ottoman goal of re-conquering Jerusalem for Islam and uniting Shia and Sunni tribes for that same mission.

In a speech that got almost no coverage in the Western media, Erdogan talked about invading and reconquering Jerusalem, according to an article in the Anadolu Agency of Turkey.

“We Muslims lost our way toward Jerusalem,” he told throngs of adoring Turks while in the state of Erzincan in central Turkey. “The water of our eyes froze making us blind, and our hearts that was destined to beat for Jerusalem is now instead conditioned for rivalry being in a state of war with each other.”

Erdogan was in the city to promote numerous service projects, but the speech focused on Jerusalem.

“When you mention the worse ascension, the first thing that comes to mind is Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said, referring to the mosque that sits on the Temple Mount.

The Mount is controlled by Arab Muslim Waqf officials, who do not allow Jews to pray except at the Western Wall. But apparently Erdogan is not satisfied with this arrangement. He told his countrymen to “ask Allah to restore the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the infallibility of the Muslims.”

Erdogan has ruled Turkey for 13 years, but the increasingly vitriolic nature of his anti-Israel rhetoric proves he has consolidated his power over the less strident Islamist views of Fethullah Gulen, a Turk who operates 120 publicly funded charter schools across the United States, says Joel Richardson, a Christian filmmaker and author of the New York Times-best-seller, “The Islamic Antichrist.”

Veterans of the Iraq War watched in frustration as Republican presidential contenders distanced themselves in recent days from the decision their party enthusiastically supported to invade that country.

Some veterans say they long ago concluded their sacrifice was in vain, and are annoyed that a party that lobbied so hard for the war is now running from it. Others say they still believe their mission was vital, regardless of what the politicians say. And some find the gotcha question being posed to the politicians -- knowing what we know now, would you have invaded? -- an insult in itself.

"Do-overs don't happen in real life," said Gregory Diacogiannis, 30, who served as an Army sniper in Baghdad trying to spot militants laying roadside bombs and chased high-value targets in the city of Baqouba. "I have trouble with the question itself just because it lends itself to disregarding the sacrifices that have been made."

Diacogiannis left the army in 2008, but says even now he feels such a strong attachment to Iraq that he's thought about going back to fight as the country has plunged into chaos since U.S. troops left.

The war became a campaign issue when likely presidential contender Jeb Bush was asked about the invasion ordered by his brother, former President George W. Bush. After days of questioning, Jeb Bush said that in light of what's now known -- that Saddam Hussein did not have WMD stockpiles -- he would not have invaded.

Other possible Republican hopefuls including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich all later gave similar responses.

Aaron Hinde, 33, is appalled at what he feels the U.S. invasion did to Iraq. He served there in 2003, mostly in the volatile northern city of Mosul and became active in the anti-war movement after leaving the army in 2004.

He's glad Republicans are being held accountable for the invasion, but says that answer's been known for a long time.
