Congress is flummoxed about how to deal with President Barack Obama’s proposed authorization for war against the Islamic State. While there's a sizeable majority of members who favor putting congressional guidance on the war, the lack of agreement on how to do so raises the possibility that efforts to pass legislation will flounder on Capitol Hill.

All week, Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate have been meeting behind closed doors to strategize on the White House’s proposal, which places vague limits on the use of ground troops, allows the president to expand the war to any country, and sunsets in three years. Many Republicans want to give Obama (and his successor) more flexibility; many Democrats want to tighten restrictions.

Both parties acknowledge the need for some bipartisan support for their ideas. But neither leadership has figured out how to craft a coalition that can muster 60 votes in the Senate and 218 in the House.

“It is certainly possible this thing could fall apart,” Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told me. “The war would go on even in the absence of a new authorization, but that would really be a blow to the institution of the Congress.”

Schiff is engaged in an effort by House Democrats to add stricter definitions to the bill’s prohibition on the use of ground forces for “enduring forward combat operations,” a term they argue could have various interpretations. He wants specific language spelling out exactly what ground troops could be used for, such as special operations or combat search and rescue.

Some House Democrats are looking to libertarian-leaning Republicans to join in them in opposing any authorization bill that could be interpreted to allow large combat operations on the ground in Iraq or Syria.

“I suspect that there are a number of libertarian-oriented Republicans who share the same concerns. It will be interesting to see how many of them there are and how they line up,” Schiff said. “A lot will depend on how many Republicans will be similarly uncomfortable with another open-ended authorization.”

The Republican House leadership, on the other hand, is determined to build a mostly Republican voting block to support a bill with more flexibility for the president, not less. They hold a strong majority, but if they lose 30 Republicans on the bill, they will need to pick up some hawkish Democrats to get it passed.

Two months after a discrimination lawsuit accused Rep. Blake Farenthold of creating a hostile, sexually charged work environment, the Texas Republican claims his former communications director was fired for not showing up to work and lying about the circumstances of her absence.

In a detailed, 14-page response filed by attorneys from the Office of House Employment Counsel, Farenthold, 53, denied that he was attracted to 27-year-old staffer Lauren Greene or that he had the “sexual fantasies” and “wet dreams” Greene alleged in her complaint.

The document filed in D.C. federal court on Thursday acknowledges some of the eyebrow-raising details described by the fired press aide are true.

Staff “occasionally joked” that Farenthold finds redheads attractive, but the office denies Greene’s claims that staffers who accompanied him to Capitol Hill functions would joke that they had to be on “red head patrol” to keep him out of trouble, or that the three-term lawmaker drank to excess.

Did Farenthold once, disclose during a staff meeting, that he had been propositioned for a threesome? His office admits that one is true, but denies that the woman who propositioned Farenthold was a lobbyist, and rejects Greene’s claim that he told his staff about the proposition for “an improper or lascivious purpose.”

The Senate showdown over immigration could help Minority Leader Harry Reid energize Latino voters in what is expected to be a tough re-election fight — giving him little incentive to cut a deal.

“There is no political downside for Sen. Reid here,” said Jose Parra, a former staffer for the Nevada Democrat and now head of ProsperoLatino, a Latino-focused public relations firm.

Senate Democrats, led by Reid, have already voted three times to block a House-passed bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, thanks to provisions that would gut President Barack Obama’s executive actions shielding millions of immigrants from deportation.

Another vote — and another filibuster — are expected after the Presidents Day recess as a department shutdown looms at the end of the month.

Reid is no stranger to Latino outreach. And his office is working with churches in Nevada, where the Silver State Democrat’s staff has been holding workshops to help Latinos sign up for the deferred-action programs.

“It’s a tremendous contrast where you have Reid, once again, protecting the community and these [Republican] guys doing everything they can to separate families,” Parra said. “That’s how it’s portrayed in Hispanic media. This is a family unity issue. And you have Reid holding the line, keeping his caucus together.”

According to a report released last month by the Center for American Progress, Latinos will make up almost 19 percent of Nevada’s eligible voters in 2016, up from 16 percent in 2012. Non-Hispanic white voters will drop from 65 percent of eligible voters to 60 percent.

Congressional Republicans plan to hold back legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline to prevent President Obama from vetoing it while lawmakers are away from Washington.

While Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) staged a signing ceremony for the bill on Friday morning, the legislation will not be sent to the White House until after next week’s Presidents Day recess, according to a top Republican aide.

"Keystone isn’t just a pipeline, it’s a lifeline for our construction workers.  And the overwhelming majority of the American people know it as well," Boehner said Friday. "So to the president, I would just say this: do the right thing, sign this bill."

Once Obama receives the bill, he will have 10 days, excluding Sundays, to sign or veto it.

Asked about the timeline provided by the aide, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) suggested the bill could be sent to Obama the week of Feb. 23.

"I expect [the bill] will be [at the White House] by the day we’re back,” said McConnell spokesman Don Stewart.

The White House has repeatedly promised that Obama will veto the legislation, arguing the review of the $8 billion project at the State Department should be allowed to run its course.

"The president has been pretty clear that he does not think circumventing a well-established process for evaluating these projects is the right thing for Congress," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said last month.

The State Department just finished collecting comments from agencies on whether the oil sands project is in the nation's best interest, potentially setting the stage for a determination this spring.

Once Secretary of State John Kerry finishes reviewing the comments, he will send a recommendation to Obama, who will make the final decision.

Undaunted by the long battle over Keystone XL and current low oil prices, TransCanada Corp. is planning to build another border-crossing pipeline that would ferry North Dakota crude to refineries in Eastern Canada.

TransCanada executives confirmed Friday they have signed contracts with shippers for enough capacity on the proposed 285-mile Upland pipeline to go forward with the project. It would move as many as 70,000 barrels a day of oil away from North Dakota’s Williston Basin, giving producers another alternative to shipping that crude by rail.

“There is no question that production is up in North America, across the board,” said TransCanada CEO Russ Girling, in a conference call to discuss the company’s earnings. “All of that production is moving on rail today, and it wants to get off rail as quickly as possible, and so those producers are talking to TransCanada and other service operators to look for alternatives, to move it off the rails on to a less expensive, more efficient, safer system.”

The project would be subject to regulatory reviews in Canada and the United States — including the same kind of national interest analysis the U.S. State Department is now conducing on TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

First proposed more than six years ago, Keystone XL has become ensnared in a larger fight over climate change, and it is not known when the State Department will rule on whether the pipeline is in the national interest. In response to a legal challenge by landowners in Nebraska, a judge has issued a temporary injunction blocking TransCanada from invoking eminent domain along Keystone XL’s path through the state.

Keystone XL is largely aimed at giving Alberta oil sands crude a new route to the U.S. Midwest and on to Gulf Coast refineries — though room is reserved on Keystone for some North Dakota supplies.

The proposed Upland pipeline, by contrast, would serve U.S. producers.

Girling said he hopes the Upland pipeline won’t encounter the same permitting challenges — an “extraordinarily difficult process” — as Keystone. Typically, it takes about 24 months to permit border-crossing pipelines, Girling said.

I hope (Keystone is) an anomaly in Canada-U.S. trade of energy,” Girling said, “but obviously, the market isn’t waiting for the regulators to catch up with their decisions; they’re moving the oil now. My view is eventually that oil has to move and eventually we will obtain the permits.”

“These are necessary pieces of infrastructure that are required to efficiently move volumes that are being produced today between production locations and markets,” Girling added. “These things have to get completed.”

It is not clear exactly where Upland would enter the United States, though it could be north of Minot, N.D. The pipeline is expected to connect to the proposed 1.1-million-barrel-per-day Energy East pipeline in Moosomin, Saskatchewan.

Even without winning approval to build the northern leg of Keystone XL, TransCanada reported its earnings climbed in the fourth quarter of 2014 to $387 million, thanks to the beginning of oil deliveries on Keystone XL’s southern leg, from Oklahoma to Texas.

TransCanada executives said they would look for ways to optimize Keystone and their other liquids pipelines, including use of drag-reducing agents to boost their flows.

It wasn't supposed to be like this for Republicans. A month into their control of both chambers of Congress, they are confronting the very real possibility of a shutdown of the Homeland Security Department later this month.

Instead of advancing a conservative agenda and showing voters they can govern, the GOP has been unable to overcome Senate Democrats' stalling tactics in a dispute over immigration.

"I suppose elections have consequences except in the United States Senate," complained GOP Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, summing up the frustration for many House Republicans. "Tell me how it would be different if Harry Reid were still running the place," he added, naming the Senate Democratic leader who was booted into the minority in November's midterm elections.

Although their party is now setting the floor schedule and calling hearings, Republicans are finding to their chagrin that important things haven't changed from when they were in the Senate minority.

Republicans are six votes short of the 60 needed to advance most legislation, and Senate rules grant numerous rights to the minority party. That means if Democrats remain united, they have the ability to block GOP bills just as they did while in the majority.

Democrats have been united against House-passed legislation funding the Homeland Security Department through September, the end of the budget year, while also rolling back President Barack Obama's executive policies on immigration.

As a result Congress appears to be at a stalemate on the issue, leaving Republicans with only a few options: pass a short-term extension of current funding levels, fold and strip the immigration language opposed by Democrats from the bill, or let the Homeland Security Department run out of money when current funding expires Feb. 27.

Two days after NBC announced the six-month suspension of Brian Williams, questions have emerged over at least one other statement made by Williams when he was in the Southland.

While speaking at a forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in 2008, an audience memberasked Williams what his “wow” interview was or moment in his career.

“What was my wow … I’ve been so fortunate,” he said. “I was at the Brandenburg Gate the night the wall came down.”

What Williams was referring to was the demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989, but there are now reports that he actually arrived the day after the wall came down.

In December, about 20 Cambodian workers engaged in a bloody group fight inside a bar in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province.
The incident is belatedly becoming the talk of town after surveillance camera footage showing their brutal fight was aired on TV Wednesday.
Some of the Cambodian men, who all work in factories in Gimhae or Busan on temporary visas, sustained deep stab wounds and bone fractures that will require months of hospital treatment, police said.
During the fight, they smashed bottles of beer and soju, and threw dozens of chairs at each other, breaking dishes and glasses. The owner of the bar said he was lucky that they only cost him his tables and dishes, not his life.
"There were a lot of blood stains. I could have been hit by any of the bottles they threw," he said.
Residents in Gimhae were frightened by the videos of the incident.
"I thought of foreign factory workers as being docile, hardworking and somewhat naïve. But this likely breaks that stereotype. They could be violent and dangerous, too. I'm afraid of them," a resident said.

Oregon’s Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber will resign this afternoon, multiple sources told Portland’s KOIN. News of the governor’s resignation comes after the governor was accused of using his influence to arrange contracts for his fiance’s green energy company and ordering the deletion of thousands of emails relevant to the scandal.

In recent days the governor had faced mounting calls for his resignation, including from members of his own party. Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek both called for the governor to step down. Many other public officials made the same plea.

“It is with deep sadness that I ask Gov. John Kitzhaber to resign his position as governor of Oregon,” State Treasurer Ted Wheeler told KOIN yesterday. “Unfortunately, the current situation has become untenable, and I cannot imagine any scenario by which things improve.”

“Oregon deserves a governor who is fully focused on the duties of state.”

These calls have had an impact on Kitzhaber’s decision making, according to the KOIN report.

The governor has yet make a public announcement of his resignation.

Dozens of American and South Korean veterans attended a special screening Wednesday of a South Korean box-office hit that chronicles the Korean War and other hardships South Korea has gone through to rebuild itself from the war's ashes.
"Ode to My Father" has become a sensation in South Korea since its opening on Dec. 17, surpassing the 10 million viewer mark in less than a month, as it struck a chord with older generations who have witnessed how South Korea overcame poverty and other hardships to become what it is today.
Organizers of the special screening -- the Korean Churches for North Koreans (KCNK) and the human rights group LiNK -- said they held the event and invited American war veterans to shed light on the meaning of the Korean War to Korea-U.S. relations.
The movie, which tells the story of an ordinary father who sacrificed himself to support his family, begins with spectacular scenes of a massive evacuation operation that pulled some 105,000 U.S. and South Korean troops and about 98,000 refugees to safety during the Korean War.

after the name of the North Korean port, came as the U.S.-backed South Korean forces began retreating from North Korea after China sent massive numbers of troops to fight alongside the communist neighbor.
U.S. veterans attending the screening at the Regal Fairfax Towne Center theater included retired Col. Thomas Fergusson, a grandson of Edward Almond (1892-1979), then commanding general of the U.S. X Corps, who is known for his decision to dump all weapons overboard to get more refugees aboard evacuation ships at the port of Heungnam.
"While we talked about many events in his long life -- his cadet days at Virginia military and his experience in three wars -- World War I, World War II and Korea -- I think he believed until his dying date that he made a contribution as a commander of all those troops, Army, Marine Corps and so forth, his greatest contribution was in the Korean War," Fergusson said of his late grandfather.
Gen. Almond believed the Heungnam evacuation was his "proudest accomplishment," Fergusson said.
"I think he was deeply proud of the accomplishment with the Navy and the Merchant Marines of getting those refugees out. He made the decision. I've always understood that he didn't have permission from Gen. MacArthur to do that, but he made the decision," he said.
"So, I will say I'm particularly happy over the years to have met some of the former refugees who made it out from the Heungnam evacuation and survived those ship rides down to the big island of Geoje," he added.

“We are heartbroken to share that we’ve received confirmation that Kayla Jean Mueller, has lost her life,” Carl and Marsha Mueller said in a statement. “Kayla was a compassionate and devoted humanitarian. She dedicated the whole of her young life to helping those in need of freedom, justice, and peace.”

President Barack Obama said that Mueller, who was an aid worker who assisted humanitarian organizations working with Syrian refugees, “epitomized all that is good in our world.”

“No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla’s captivity and death,” the president said.

Mueller, of Prescott, Arizona, is the fourth American to die while being held by Islamic State militants. Three other Americans – journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and aid worker Peter Kassig – were beheaded by the group.

Mueller had been working in Turkey assisting Syrian refugees, according to a 2013 article in The Daily Courier, her hometown newspaper. She told the paper that she was drawn to help with the situation in Syria.

India on Monday forecast that annual economic growth would accelerate to 7.4 per cent in the year ending in March after its statisticians changed the way they measure Asia's third-largest economy.

The new estimate is sharply higher than the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) growth projection of around 5.5 per cent under the old method as well as a revised 6.9 per cent growth a year earlier.

Under the new method, the economy grew 7.5 per cent in the quarter ending in December, outpacing China's 7.3 per cent growth in the latest quarter and making India the fastest growing major economy in the world.

The revisions mark a dramatic turnaround for an economy that barely a fortnight ago was assumed to be still struggling to gather momentum under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reform-minded government. Prior to PM Modi's election last May, the economy had endured its weakest phase of growth since the 1980s.

The apparent recovery is, however, in large measure due to changes both in the way authorities calculate gross domestic product (GDP) and the base year.

ALMOST A BILLION MONARCH BUTTERFLIES HAVE VANISHED SINCE 1990

Threatened animals like elephants, porpoises and lions grab all the headlines, but what’s happening to monarch butterflies is nothing short of a massacre. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service summed it up in just one grim statistic on Monday: Since 1990, about 970 million have vanished.

It happened as farmers and homeowners sprayed herbicides on milkweed plants, which serve as the butterflies’ nursery, food source and home. In an attempt to counter two decades of destruction, the Fish and Wildlife Service launched a partnership with two private conservation groups, the National Wildlife Federation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, to basically grow milkweed like crazy in the hopes of saving the monarchs.

Monarch butterflies are a keystone species that once fluttered throughout the United States by the billions. They alighted from Mexico to Canada each spring on a trek that required six generations of the insect to complete. Afterward, young monarchs about the quarter of the weight of a dime, that know nothing about the flight pattern through the United States, not to mention Mexico, fly back, resting, birthing and dining on milkweed.

The extinction of certain butterfly species is not unheard of. The blueberry-colored Xerces blue disappeared from San Francisco years ago, and recently Fish and Wildlife announced that two subspecies — the rockland skipper and Zestos in South Florida — haven’t been seen since 2004 and are probably extinct. On top of that, pesticide use has also caused a collapse of other pollinators — wasps, beetles and especially honeybees.

The Department of Defense (DoD) spent more than a half a million dollars on the male enhancement drug Viagra last year, according to government contracts.

The Pentagon issued 60 contracts worth$504,816 for the drug in 2014. All 60 contracts were awarded to Cardinal Health Inc., a pharmaceutical distribution company based in Dublin, Ohio.

Last year DoD also ordered $3,505 worth of Levitra, and $14,540 of Cialis, other popular erectile dysfunction drugs.

The contracts were filed under “Troop Support.”

DoD began offering Viagra to soldiers as a medical benefit in 1998, when the drug cost $10 a pill. Due to inflation, one pill now costs $25. At the time the military’s policy only allowed for six pills a month per patient, and the DoD said they would “not replace lost or stolen pills.”

Seoul claims North Korea has refined technology to miniaturize nuclear weapons so they can be mounted on ballistic missiles that threaten the U.S. mainland.
The claim comes in the 2014 Defense White Paper the Defense Ministry here published on Tuesday.
This was the first time the ministry has made the claim in such an emphatic form, although it admitted there are a lot of provisos.
The 2012 Defense White Paper merely mentioned the North's two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, but did not offer any evaluation of the technology to produce viable warheads for missiles.
This year's white paper used the term "North Korea's nuclear weapons" for the first time, since there has long been a polite fiction that the North is not officially a nuclear-armed state.
"Seoul and Washington have reached consensus that the North already reached a significant level of technology to miniaturize nuclear weapons through three nuclear tests," a ministry official said. "But there is no intelligence report that the North has already succeeded in miniaturizing nuclear weapons."
The white paper also says that the maximum range of the North's Taepodong-2 missiles has increased from 6,700 km to 10,000 km. With a range of 6,700 km, a North Korean missile could reach Alaska; and with a range of 10,000 km, it could hit the west coast of the U.S. mainland.

New revelations are emerging that could implicate Loretta Lynch, President Obama’s attorney general nominee, in the world’s largest banking scandal.

As WND reported, Lynch, as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, oversaw the investigation in 2012 of drug-related international money laundering allegations against London-based HSBC Holdings LLC.

As a result of HSBC agreeing to a settlement requiring the international bank holding company to pay the U.S. government more than $1.2 billion in fines for money laundering, Lynch’s office agreed in return not to press criminal charges against any bank employee of the U.S.-based HSBC subsidiary.

The federal government’s unwillingness to prosecute HSBC was exposed by a former HSBC vice president and relationship manager in New York, John Cruz, who called the bank a “criminal enterprise.” Cruz was ignored by law enforcement authorities until he brought to WND 1,000 pages of customer account records that document his claims.

HSBC also used its power to temporarily shut down WND.com as the news site was breaking a series of stories on the mega-bank’s money-laundering practices.

In a telephone interview with WND, Cruz said the Obama administration “is continuing to cover up its role in the HSBC money laundering scandal.”

“The U.S. government never responded to the evidence I provided of money-laundering activity that I fully documented with records copied directly from HSBC accounts,” Cruz explained to WND after learning court papers were filed Wednesday objecting to the Justice Department stonewalling a FOIA request for the release of documents that could implicate Lynch in a massive cover-up of Obama administration involvement in international money-laundering of Mexican cartel drug money.

Lynch has never explained why the New York U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2012 chose to ignore the 1,000 pages of customer account records Cruz pulled from the HSBC computer system before he was fired by HSBC senior management uninterested in investigating his claim to have discovered illegal money-laundering activity at the bank.

An award-winning elementary school teacher in Washington state is facing child rape charges following allegations that she sexually abused a former student.

Darcy Smith, 41, is accused of having sex with the boy when he was just 14 years old and living with her, her husband and her children at their home in Renton.

The alleged victim, who is now 19 years old, first reported the allegations to the King County Sheriff’s Office last May.

Smith has been on administrative leave since August, when her employer, the Highline School District, was informed of the boy’s claims.

He told detectives that he and Smith started having sex when he was in the 8th grade and the relationship continued until he moved out of her home at 18.

The boy had moved in with Smith and her family when he was 12 years old and a pupil in her 6th grade class, reports Seattle PI.

After breaking his collarbone, Smith had taken him to the hospital and soon after that he started living at her house which was closer to the doctors than his own home.

The unusual arrangement had the blessing of the boy’s mother who didn’t speak English and though Smith would be a good influence on her son whose brother was in a gang.

When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire panic ultimately rested – were systematically “adjusted” to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified.

Two weeks ago, under the headline “How we are being tricked by flawed data on global warming”, I wrote about Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. In each instance, the actual trend of 60 years of data had been dramatically reversed, so that a cooling trend was changed to one that showed a marked warming.

This was only the latest of many examples of a practice long recognised by expert observers around the world – one that raises an ever larger question mark over the entire official surface-temperature record.

Following my last article, Homewood checked a swathe of other South American weather stations around the original three. In each case he found the same suspicious one-way “adjustments”. First these were made by the US government’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). They were then amplified by two of the main official surface records, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (Giss) and the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), which use the warming trends to estimate temperatures across the vast regions of the Earth where no measurements are taken. Yet these are the very records on which scientists and politicians rely for their belief in “global warming”.

The towers of Disney’s planned Magic Kingdom in Shanghai are wreathed in scaffolding and mystery after the U.S. entertainment giant pushed back the opening of its first mainland China theme park to 2016.
On a tightly-guarded, 3.9-square-kilometer site east of China’s commercial hub, a grey turret of the unfinished “Enchanted Storybook Castle” rises into the sky.
There is no Disney branding at the main entrance, only a sign reading:
“Shanghai International Tourism and Resort Zone.”
It was originally due to be transformed in time to open this year, but Disney chairman and chief executive Bob Iger last week announced a delay, pushing the opening back to next spring.
He attributed the change to an expansion in the park’s size and number of attractions.
“The artistry, complexity, the magnitude and the detail, it’s all quite astonishing,” Iger said, calling the facility “spectacular.”
But Shanghai authorities have not confirmed any plans to expand the project, and people familiar with it point to it following stricter environmental and labour standards than normal in China.
The studios of Hollywood are competing not just for screen eyeballs in China ― whose 1.37 billion people generate the second-largest annual box office in the world ― but also theme park visitors.
The Shanghai Disney Resort will be the company’s third in Asia after Tokyo and Hong Kong. But its park in the former British colony can only partly serve the Chinese market, while Universal Studios and DreamWorks Animation are planning rival attractions on the mainland.

Years of unending news stories on U.S. government programs of surveillance, rendition and torture have apparently chilled the speech of even top business executives in the United States.

Yesterday, Jim Clifton, the Chairman and CEO of Gallup, an iconic U.S. company dating back to 1935, told CNBC that he was worried he might “suddenly disappear” and not make it home that evening if he disputed the accuracy of what the U.S. government is reporting as unemployed Americans.

The CNBC interview came one day after Clifton had penned a gutsy opinion piece on Gallup’s web site, defiantly calling the government’s 5.6 percent unemployment figure “The Big Lie” in the article’s headline. His appearance on CNBC was apparently to walk back the “lie” part of the title and reframe the jobs data as just hopelessly deceptive.

Clifton stated the following on CNBC:

“I think that the number that comes out of BLS [Bureau of Labor Statistics] and the Department of Labor is very, very accurate. I need to make that very, very clear so that I don’t suddenly disappear. I need to make it home tonight.”

After getting that out of the way, Clifton went on to eviscerate the legitimacy of the cheerful spin given to the unemployment data, telling CNBC viewers that the percent of full time jobs in this country as a percent of the adult population “is the worst it’s been in 30 years.”

Clifton drilled down further in his on line opinion piece, writing as follows:

“Right now, we’re hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is ‘down’ to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.

“None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job — if you are so hopelessly out of work that you’ve stopped looking over the past four weeks — the Department of Labor doesn’t count you as unemployed. That’s right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news — currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren’t throwing parties to toast ‘falling’ unemployment……..
