A Malaysian court ruled on Monday that non-Muslims may not use the word “Allah” to refer to God, the latest decision in a long dispute that has polarized the multicultural country.
The decision, by a panel of three judges, was intended to protect Islam, the country’s official religion, from conversions.
“It is my judgment that the most possible and probable threat to Islam, in the context of this country, is the propagation of other religions to the followers of Islam,” the chief judge, Mohamed Apandi Ali, said in the decision, according to the news Web site Malaysiakini.
The Malay language is infused with Arabic, and while 60 percent of the population is Muslim, Malay-speaking members of other monotheistic faiths in the country often use Allah to refer to God.
Monday’s ruling overturned a 2009 judgment that allowed a Catholic newspaper, The Herald, to use Allah in its Malay-language newspaper.
The use of the word Allah “is not an integral part of the faith in Christianity,” the chief judge said. “The usage of the word will cause confusion in the community.”
Non-Muslims in Malaysia, where religion, ethnicity and politics are tightly intertwined, reacted with anger.

President Obama focused on energy independence in his weekly address, following a week dominated by the chaotic rollout of his signature healthcare law.
Obama touted increased natural gas production, more efficient energy use and a drop in carbon emissions in his speech, arguing that lower carbon emissions don't slow economic growth.
"Between more clean energy, and less wasted energy, our emissions of dangerous carbon pollution are actually falling. That’s good news for anyone who cares about the world we leave to our kids," he said. "And while our carbon emissions have been dropping, our economy has been growing. Our businesses have created 7.8 million new jobs in the past 44 months. It proves that the old argument that we can’t strengthen the economy and be good stewards of our planet at the same time is a false choice. We can do both. And we have to do both."
Obama largely abandoned a push for comprehensive climate change legislation as he fought to pass ObamaCare before Democrats lost the House in 2010. But the administration has put in place new rules regarding carbon emissions, and the Environmental Protection Agency has released draft rules limiting how much carbon coal-fired power plants will be allowed to emit.

President Obama’s program of misleading the American people continued today when he proposed allowing insurance companies to rescind cancellations of insurance policies for a year.
His proposal is a way to have his cake and eat it too.
By leaving it up to the insurance companies to decide on whether or not to cancel, he clearly knows and hopes that they will proceed with the cancellations.
He thinks they will because, obviously, they make more money if they force people into higher premium ObamaCare plans than if they renew the lower premium private coverage now in force. In addition, insurance companies will not want to go through the administrative hassles and unreimbursed costs of backtracking on cancellations that may now be several months old.
Obama wants the cancellations to stand. The more cancellations, the more people will have to enroll in ObamaCare at the exchanges. It would be the only way they could continue health insurance. Now that voluntary enrollments are lagging so badly, his only hope for decent participation levels is to cancel tens of millions of policies and force people onto ObamaCare.
He is also making a skillful political maneuver to make the insurance companies take the hit for cancellations by giving them the option of not proceeding with them. Now, he can escape voter anger for cancellations and blame them on the insurance companies — a populist posture with which he is familiar and loves to assume.
He hopes that free market Republicans will agree that the government must not tell companies that they cannot cancel policies. He hopes that insurance company influence stops the GOP from embracing that position.
He may be right. The legislation introduced by Congressman Fred Upton has the same flaw as the Obama Plan in that it provides that insurance carriers “may” renew policies that don’t meet ObamaCare standards.
What is needed is the Landrieu bill which requires insurance companies to rescind the cancellations.

TRACK OF TYPHOON HAIYAN AND THE USS GEORGE WASHINGTON AIRCRAFT CARRIER PROVIDES AID
Helicopters from a US aircraft carrier that has arrived in the region were being marshalled in support of the Philippines relief effort on Friday as Tacloban officials said the typhoon's official death toll had nearly doubled to 4,000.
The nuclear-powered USS George Washington aircraft carrier and accompanying ships arrived off eastern Samar province on Thursday evening, carrying 5,000 crew and more than 80 aircraft.
The carrier moved some fixed-wing aircraft ashore to make more room for the helicopters on its flight deck.
U.S. sailors have brought food and water ashore in Tacloban and the town of Guiuan.
The carrier is moored near where U.S. General Douglas MacArthur’s force of 174,000 men landed on Oct. 20, 1944, in one of the biggest Allied victories of World War Two.

Japan is sending its biggest-ever Self-Defense Forces relief team to the Philippines to deal with the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera on Friday issued an order to mobilize more than 1,100 personnel.
He also ordered that the number of aircraft deployed be raised to 16 and that 3 ships be sent to take part in relief efforts.
50 Japanese personnel and 2 aircraft are now operating in the storm-hit areas.
Japan decided to boost the size of its relief team after a request from the Philippine government. The typhoon caused damage to a wide area. Many survivors are still without aid.
The Defense Ministry says that until now the biggest relief team Japan had ever sent overseas was one with 925 members after the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004.
Personnel from the Air, Ground and Maritime Self-Defense Forces make up the team being sent to the Philippines. There will be a unified chain of command to increase operational efficiency.
The aid team is scheduled to leave Japan on Monday and arrive in the Philippines on November 22nd at the earliest.

JAPAN TRIPLES TO OVER $30 MILLION ITS AID FOR THE PHILIPINES AFTER THE DEVASTATING TYPHOON
Japan said Friday it was tripling its emergency aid package for the typhoon-ravaged Philippines to more than $30 million, as Tokyo prepares to send as many as 1,000 troops to help with relief efforts.
The foreign ministry said it would now give $30 million in emergency grant aid to the disaster-struck nation, up from a previous $10 million. Another $2 million worth of emergency relief goods and assistance is being delivered through Japanese non-governmental organizations.
Tokyo said the total package would reach about $52 million including a $20 million contribution to its poverty reduction fund at the Manila-based Asian Development Bank.
The major contribution to the Philippines from Asia’s second-biggest economy has drawn comparisons to the relatively little coming from China, which is now the region’s largest economy and which is embroiled in territorial disputes with Manila.
China said Thursday it would provide a further $1.6 million aid to the Philippines, mainly in tents and blankets, after widespread criticism of its initial modest response of a $100,000 government donation, matched by the Chinese Red Cross.

On Friday, the House of Representatives approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) that would allow insurers to continue to offer policies on the individual market. The vote was 261-157. Thirty-nine Democrats voted for the Upton Amendment, which is an indication the Democrat united front on Obamacare is cracking.
ObamaCare largely eliminates the individual market and forces those policy holders into the health exchanges. On Thursday, Obama proposed extending the individual market for one year. The Upton bill would not only let existing policies continue, but insurers could sell individual policies to new customers. The White House has vowed to veto Upton's bill if it reaches the President's desk.
Since the launch of the ObamaCare website, millions of Americans have received notices that their policies were being cancelled. ObamaCare passed largely on the reassurances that "if you like your policy, you can keep it." The policy cancellations show that claim to be false.

Health insurance companies are crying foul over new measures President Obama announced Thursday as a political tweak to his fast-disintegrating Affordable Care Act, making the fix potentially worse than the problem.
But Republicans are set to up the ante even further with a vote Friday that could push insurers to honor or reissue policies ripe for cancellation under Obamacare for the long haul, instead of merely giving them the option for one year.
The White House said Thursday that the president would veto the bill, but it's unclear whether he will have the political will to do so when the time comes.
The president declared that insurance companies could allow Americans to keep their health insurance plans without paying for costly upgrades that satisfy the Obamacare law's stringent requirements.
Meanwhile, state insurance commissioners joined a conference call to carp about what it will mean for their industry, and whether Obama's latest pivot will make things even worse.

100 million people aren’t even a small sliver of China or India… let alone the United States. It’s more than the number of people who voted for Obama. It’s twenty times the size of his margin of victory. If that’s a small sliver of the population that can be disregarded when their insurance plans are taken out back and shot, then they can also be disregarded when they voted for Obama.
The problem is not that there were nearly 100 million bad apple insurance plans out there. The people complaining about losing their plans didn’t have bad apple plans… they had a bad apple president.
The man in the White House was a substandard model who relied on a Wild, Wild West of unregulated executive power to set up an illegal law, tamper with it freely and then dump it on the country, while protecting a small sliver of allies in key unions and the government from what he had done to the rest of the country.
The insurers weren’t angels, but they had no interest in screwing up health care for almost 100 million people. Businesses don’t think that big. Governments do.

A white Texas man won a political campaign Tuesday in a heavily black area using an unconventional tactic — according to a local media outlet, he pretended to be black.
Dave Wilson was tired of “all the shenanigans” plaguing the Houston Community College System and decided to run for office, KHOU-TV reported Friday.
However, Wilson reportedly thought the odds of a white conservative Republican winning in an overwhelmingly black Democratic district were low, so he turned to a tactic his opponent said was “disgusting.”
“I’d always said it was a long shot,” Wilson said. “No, I didn’t expect to win.”
