To turn Henry Kissinger’s famous quote around, even those with enemies can be paranoid. So it is with Hillary Clinton.

Few were surprised by recent revelations that her staff labored for weeks after her 2008 campaign to amass an “enemies list” of those who received Clintonian largesse and failed to reciprocate. Like former President Nixon, she wanted to institutionalize revenge and, like Santa, wanted to keep tabs on who was naughty or nice.

So much of the Nixon playbook finds its echo in Clinton. His wiretaps are akin to those she and President Obama kept on foreign leaders, recording their conversations for later use. So far, the former secretary of State has largely escaped blame in the scandal and the president has taken the heat. But, obviously, she received information from the taps. Any claim to a lack of knowledge is as disingenuous as the president’s.

As secretary of State, Clinton instructed diplomats to spy on Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, and other top U.N. officials. The diplomats were ordered to gather biometric information (including DNA, fingerprints and iris scans), passwords and personal encryption keys used in private and commercial networks for official communications. They were to gather Internet and intranet usernames, email addresses, website URLs useful for identification, credit card numbers, frequent flyer account numbers and work schedules.

In particular, she directed her Argentine embassy officials to gather information on President Cristina Fernández, including how she handles stress and whether she was taking any medication to help her “calm down.” She asked her diplomats to spy on the Argentine president and find out how “stress affects her behavior toward advisors and/or her decision-making.”

Back in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign, Hillary got the campaign to hire detectives to investigate women linked to her husband to amass dirt in order to cow them into silence. Reportedly called the “bimbo patrol,” these operatives, her own private secret police, dug up evidence of past abortions, divorces, affairs and the like to threaten women with exposure if they ratted out her husband.

In 1996, Clinton asked me about the 50th birthday party her husband had just celebrated at the Radio City Music Hall. His speech, to $1,000 donors, was interrupted by catcalls from gay activists.

“Do you think they paid for their own ticket? They couldn’t afford to sit in those seats,” she asked. “I’ll tell you who paid for them. The Republicans did.”

Growing more animated, she said “they will do the same thing at our convention,” which was to start two weeks hence. “Bill and I will get up there to speak,” she continued, “and they’ll jump up and yell at us just like they did at Bill’s party and that’s all the media will cover.”

To forestall these imminent protests, she demanded “I want tickets to all spectators in the convention galleries. I want Social Security numbers. I want background checks. I want to know who is in every seat.”

The next day, I asked the president about the first lady’s proposal, pointing out its obvious public relations ramifications. With a wave of his hand, he said dismissively, “Don’t worry, we’re not going to do that.”

I remember feeling a wave of relief at the president’s more balanced consideration of the issue and reflected how nice it was to have him — not her — in charge.

A Hong Kong billionaire, who initially offered 40 million pounds ($130 MILLION US) to the man who will marry his lesbian daughter, has now offered to double the 'marriage bounty'.

Shipping magnate and property developer Cecil Chao Sze-tsung offered a reward in September 2012 for the man, who could persuade his daughter to marry him, despite the fact that she had already entered into a civil partnership with her female partner of almost nine years, The Independent reported Friday.

Chao told The Financial Times in January 2013 that "anyone who comes along to pursue his daughter, we will give them a moderately deluxe life".

It has been reported that Chao had wanted to pass control of his business to his daughter, but would now consider handing it over to his two sons, if she does not marry.

The 77-year-old has reportedly said he would consider doubling the money offered to HK dollars 1 billion after his first offer attracted 20,000 unsuccessful responses.

He said it is "not too late" to change his daughter's mind on her sexuality. He wanted her to have a good marriage, children, as well as inherit his business.

His daughter, who is an executive director of luxury property development company Cheuk Nang, said any amount of money offered would not be able to attract a man whom she would find attractive.

This is big, big trouble for a campaign that didn’t need any more trouble.  Battleground Texas, a Democrat group integral to Wendy Davis’ gubernatorial campaign (as she herself would have told you, until about an hour ago) is a pretty nasty crew.  They’re given to saying ugly, sometimes legally dubious things when hidden cameras are pointed at them.  James O’Keefe and Project Veritas – a group that has been saluted for its effectiveness by no less than the Governor of New York – enjoy pointing hidden cameras at them.

The latest result brings us Battleground Texas staffers mocking Davis’ Republican opponent, Greg Abbott, for being a paraplegic.  (One of the many absurdities of the Texas race is that Davis doctored the hell out of her biography to make herself look like a hard-luck story, while Abboot was hit by a tree and paralyzed while jogging 30 years ago.)

The Battleground Texas clowns laugh about how it’s “amazing to think” of how Abbott is stuck in a wheelchair while they want to “stand with Wendy.”  They can’t believe he’s doing so well in the race, because they think “he’s not good looking, he doesn’t speak very well, he doesn’t have a good personality, and he’s in a wheelchair.”

They also think committing fraud on absentee is an amusing practice, which they are more than willing to tolerate.  Obama’s government is busy abusing power left and right to suppress dissident Tea Party groups (and now Hollywood conservatives!) on the pretext that they might be too partisan to get the kind of instant tax exemption approval that Obama for America got when it changed its name, but no one in the Justice Department seems to be keeping tabs on a Democrat group with an indulgent attitude towards outright voter fraud.

A conservative filmmaker has a suspicion as to why his colleague, Dinesh D’Souza, was just indicted on federal charges of violating campaign finance laws.

Dennis Michael Lynch, a successful filmmaker in his own right, sees a political motive behind the charge.

“Is he guilty of what it is they claim he did? I have no idea,” Lynch told WND. But, he added, “Guilty or not, they’re going to throw him into the mud to discredit his name.”

And why would “they” do that? Because, Lynch pointed out, D’Souza has another film coming out, right before the 2014 midterm elections.

D’Souza’s last film, “2016: Obama’s America” was highly critical of the president and became the second-highest grossing political documentary of all time.

“What Dinesh D’Souza proved is there is a huge appetite, a huge audience, for the kinds of films that he and I make. That’s why it won’t happen again. Because, the other side knows that. And they want to make sure that doesn’t happen,” observed Lynch.

He said what D’Souza accomplished is extremely rare, because it is almost impossible for conservatives to get distributors to show their films in theaters. Almost all conservative filmmakers have to sell their movies as DVDs.

Despite initial high expectations, the Indian Air Force appears to be souring on a joint development deal with Russia for a new fifth-generation fighter jet, according to the Business Standard, a major Indian business publication. The Russian prototype is "unreliable, its radar inadequate, its stealth features badly engineered,” said Indian Air Force Deputy Air Marshall S Sukumar at a Jan. 15 meeting, according to minutes obtained by the Business Standard.

That contrasts sharply with high hopes voiced by the Indian government when the joint project, to which the Indian government has contributed $6 billion, began.

“[The new plane] will have advanced features such as stealth, supercruise, ultra-maneuvrability, highly integrated avionics suite, enhanced situational awareness, internal carriage of weapons and Network Centric Warfare capabilities,” the Indian government said in a December 2010 press release. Those are all hallmarks of “fifth generation” aircraft.

“Clearly they want to go more Western because they recognize that the Russian stuff just isn't up to the western standards."

The Indian Air Force did not respond to a request for comment.

Across the country, dozens of Hollywood-watching publications were quick to heap criticism on “Alone Yet Not Alone.”

The Wire called the song “the year’s most WTF [what the f---] Oscar nominee,” and Ty Burr of Boston Globe penned a blog post about “Alone Yet Not Alone” titled “The Oscar nomination that stinks to heaven.”

“Its inclusion is questionable, and evidence that strides still need to be made when it comes to the Oscar song field,” reads a particularly pointed criticism from the Los Angeles Times.

NewNowNext, a division of Viacom’s LGBT channel LogoTV called it “a clunky song from an obscure Christian movie score” and blasted the movie for having an “anti-gay connection” because of endorsements from Rick Santorum and James Dobson, among others.

“It’s crammed with sappy Christian aphorisms,” writes NewNowNext’s Dan Avery of the song, “and over-produced to within an inch of its life.”

But it’s not as though the song has no pedigree nor business securing a nomination.

President Obama said in an interview published Sunday he does not believe marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol and that it was “important” that the legalization of the drug in some states to “go forward” because it would prevent unfair penalties for some users.

 

"As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama said in an interview with The New Yorker.

Pressed on whether marijuana was less dangerous than alcohol, Obama noted that it’s “not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”

But, Obama said, he did see pot as less dangerous “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

Obama said he was particularly concerned by disproportionate arrests of and sentences for minorities possessing the drug.

“Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he said. “And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.”

The president said he believed it was unfair that the government was “locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing.”

On March 29, 2009, Robert Stewart, 45,  stormed into the Pinelake Health and Rehab nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina and opened fire, killing eight people and wounding two. Stewart’s apparent target was his estranged wife, who worked as a nurse in the home. She hid in a bathroom and was unharmed. Stewart was charged with eight counts of first-degree murder; if convicted, he could face the death penalty. Even though there was evidence that Stewart’s actions were premeditated (he allegedly had a target), Stewart’s defense team successfully argued that since he was under the influence of Ambien, a sleep aid, at the time of the shooting, he was not in control of his actions. Instead of the charges sought by the prosecutors, Stewart was  convicted on eight counts of second-degree murder. He received 142 – 179 years in prison. 

Ambien, a member of the class of medications known as hypnotics, was approved by the FDA in 1992. It was designed for short term use to combat insomnia and was a welcome change from the prevailing sleep aid at the time, Halcion, which had been  implicated in psychosis, suicide, and addiction and had been banned in half a dozen countries. Ambien works by activating the neurotransmitter  GABA and binding it to the GABA receptors in the same  location as the benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium. The extra GABA activity triggered by the drug inhibits the neuron activity that is associated with insomnia. In other words, it slows down the brain. Ambien is extremely effective at initiating sleep, usually working within 20 minutes. It does not, however, have an effect on sustaining sleep unless it is taken in the controlled release form.

Although the Ambien prescribing information warned, in small print, that medications in the hypnotic class had occasional side effects including sleep walking, “abnormal thinking,” and “strange behavior,” these behaviors were listed as extremely rare, and any anecdotal evidence of “sleep driving,” “sleep eating,” or “sleep shopping”—all behaviors now associated with Ambien blackouts—were characterized as unusual quirks, or attributed to mixing the medication with alcohol. It wasn’t until Patrick Kennedy’s 2006 middle-of-the-night car accident and subsequent explanation to arriving officers that he was running late for a vote that the bizarre side effects of Ambien began to receive national attention. Kennedy claimed that he had taken the sleep aid and had no recollection of the events that night. After its approval, Ambien quickly  rose to dominance in the sleep aid market. Travelers swore by it to combat jet lag, and women, who suffer more insomnia than men, bought it in droves. Sanofi, Ambien’s French manufacturer, made $2 billion in sales at its peak. In 2007 the generic version of Ambien was released, Zolpidem, and at less than $2 per pill, it still remains one of the most prescribed drugs in America, outselling popular painkillers like Percocet and prescription strength ibuprofen.

Why President Obama hasn’t been physically dragged out of office at this point is one of those questions that will likely remain a mystery.

In case you missed it, Obama this week declared to his Cabinet that if Congress doesn’t do what he wants it to do, he will simply use executive orders to create and enforce any law he chooses.

Based on the silence from my many liberal acquaintances, the response to Obama from the Left is “so what?”

Obama repeated his declaration to the Democratic members of Congress, who then walked out of the meeting without talking to reporters.

Again, silence.

Did Obama talk too fast? Was he not speaking clearly?

For my hard-headed friends on the Left, let’s review: The president of the United States just declared that Congress is null and void as far as he’s concerned. Except for the fact that Congress will continue to burn through money like a hot knife through butter, and absent a formal declaration of dissolution, the Legislative Branch has effectively ceased to exist.

It’s still there in the sense that it occupies space, but that’s it.

Obama is acting like Jack Nicholson in “Mars Attacks”: “I want the people to know that they still have two out of three branches of the government working for them, and that ain’t bad.”

Except the invader here isn’t from another  planet or even another country. We’ve just witnessed a home-grown coup. (And one that many of us saw coming even before Obama’s first presidential victory.)

We are now living — officially — in a dictatorship.

So where’s the outrage?

Is Twitter so fascinating that you just can’t be bothered?

Grumpy Cat got your tongue?

Bill Maher didn’t make fun of it, so it hasn’t happened?

Is it the fluoride in the water?

Is it the legalized pot?

Or is it that after years of dumbing down public education, we are simply too stupid to realize what just happened?

Another review for the Left: The government derives its authority from the people. The Constitution is the contract that limits and defines what the government can do. The president under the contract is supposed to work with Congress and enforce the laws that Congress passes.

President Obama has just said he will not follow that contract he has with the people. He has broken the contract.

No Constitution, no presidency.

So if Obama, despite breaking his contract, continues to accept and enjoy all the perks of the president’s office while failing to honor his obligations, that makes him something else other than the president.

Now, what are you going to do about it?
