Current U.S. law, written and passed by Congress and signed by the President, makes it unlawful for foreign nationals to enter or stay in the country without authorization.[2] Despite this clear provision of law, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) estimated that about 11.4 million people lived in the United States without authorization in January 2012.[3] Deportations, particularly interior enforcement, have decreased dramatically under President Obama,[4] and he has made clear his support for granting legal status to those who are in the country unlawfully.[5]

The Department of Homeland Security issued the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) memorandum on June 15, 2012. DACA purported to set prosecutorial priorities and grant relief to each individual who (1) came to the U.S. under the age of 16; (2) continuously resided in the U.S. for at least five years before the date of the memo; (3) is currently in school, has graduated from high school, has a GED, or is an honorably discharged veteran; (4) has not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, or multiple misdemeanors or otherwise poses a threat; and (5) is not above the age of 30.[6]

In early 2013, debate began on a comprehensive immigration bill that would include an amnesty for most of the unlawful immigrant population. The U.S. Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) in June 2013.[7] In January 2014, the leadership of the House of Representatives issued “principles” for immigration reform[8] that included a general legalization much like S. 744.[9]

Since the issuance of the DACA memo and during debate over a larger amnesty, the number of people unlawfully crossing the U.S. border has increased significantly.[10] Many are turning themselves in, believing that they could qualify for deferred action even though the memorandum requires continuous residence since at least June 15, 2007.[11] Even if they do not qualify for DACA, lax enforcement in general means that most illegal immigrants will not be deported once they enter the interior of the U.S.[12] President Obama and some in Congress sought to advance a comprehensive bill, but momentum for such a measure has collapsed, in part as a result of the massive influx of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border of the United States.

Leaders in Congress have called for greater enforcement of the law, while President Obama continues to call for legalization. Recent press reports indicate that he is inclined to issue a memo like DACA for a large subset of the illegal immigrant population, perhaps up to 5 million.[13] That would be a mistake for three primary reasons: It is unjust, it is costly, and it will not work to stop illegal immigration. Before addressing these concerns, it is important to consider why we have immigration laws.

The remarks made by President Obama also included denouncing the horror of human-rights atrocities and suggesting that memorializing what happened in Nazi Germany could help to ensure that similar crimes against civilization would be avoided in the future.

Obama, who has made a habit of speaking while standing silent, said that day that we -- which, by definition, includes him -- must “tell our children about how this evil was allowed to happen -- because so many people succumbed to their darkest instincts…because so many others stood silent.”

President Barack Obama is facing potential rifts with members of his own party in tough re-election contests as he barrels toward a fall fight with Republicans over his ability to change immigration policies.

 

If Obama takes the broadest action under consideration — removing the threat of deportation for millions of people in this country illegally — the short-term risks appear greatest for Senate Democrats in conservative-leaning states. Weeks before the November vote, they could find themselves on the hot seat for their views not only on immigration but also on Obama's use of his presidential powers.

Wary of what could be coming, some of those lawmakers have said Obama should act with caution.

"This is an issue that I believe should be addressed legislatively and not through executive order," said Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., one of the top targets for Republicans trying to retake control of the Senate.

Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., another vulnerable incumbent, said in a statement that he also is "frustrated with the partisanship in Washington. But that doesn't give the president carte blanche authority to sidestep Congress when he doesn't get his way."

Such statements have immigration advocates on edge.

Apple has started to store some of its Chinese users' data on servers in mainland China, becoming one of the very few technology giants to store information on Chinese soil

It's a step away from its rivals, like Google and Microsoft, which tend to shy away from storing data in the country due to its policies on censorship and past accusations of state-sponsored hacking and spying.

Apple said it made the move in order to speed up its iCloud service to users in the country, and increase reliability across the board, according to the Reuters news agency.

China remains increasingly important to the company's bottom line, as it continues to drive the company's strong quarterly revenue. The iPhone and iPad maker's fiscal third-quarter results showed China accounted for about 16 percent of the company's global revenue, thanks to a bump in iPhone sales — its predominant profit driver — in the country.

But skeptics are already questioning whether or not the data-storing approach may harm its business, in light of the nation state's past (and ongoing) practices.

IBM received good news from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) on Friday regarding the proposed sale of its x86-based server business to Chinese PC maker Lenovo.

 

Following a period of intense scrutiny fueled by national security concerns, US regulators have approved the $2.3 billion sale, which gives Lenovo control of IBM's x86 servers, blade networking and maintenance operations.

The deal received approval in China last month.

While IBM says the sale of its low-end server business will allow the company to focus on system and software innovations such as cognitive computing, Big Data and cloud infrastructure, security concerns have hovered over the deal since it was first announced back in January.

The main issue revolves around the sensitive deployments of the x86 servers – they are not only used in the nation's communications networks, but also within the data centers that run the Pentagon's computer network.

Lenovo will now maintain those deployments, as per the terms of the deal, which critics say could lead to weakened security via hackers or Chinese spies.

Are you being hounded by debt collectors? You’re not alone. Once you go into debt -- even if it’s something as benign as paying for something with a credit card, or borrowing to go to college -- then you owe someone else money, and sometimes you’re not able to pay back everything you borrowed. And when that happens, the debt starts to get traded: the initial lender will write off the debt, and sell it to a collector. For example, if you borrowed money from a bank, but now the bank has written the loan off, then you no longer owe the bank but a debt collection agency. And the people who work for collection agencies can be very aggressive.

Jake Halpern’s great new book, Bad Paper, an adaptation of which is published in The New York Times Magazine, follows a number of these collectors -- many with multiple felony convictions to their name -- around Buffalo, New York, the center of debt collections in the US. According to the Urban Institute, roughly 77 million Americans, or 35% of adults with a credit file, have a report of debt in collections. In some places, that number is significantly higher: In Las Vegas, for instance, it’s 50%¹. Of that 35%, most do the wrong thing when approached by debt collection agencies. Their first instinct is to hang up the phone, to run away, to try to ignore the problem, which almost never works. What does work: Taking action like writing a letter to the company in question, instructing its representatives not to contact you. This generally does the trick -- until the collection agency sells your debt to yet another collection agency…..

……..The reason? When lenders pass debt onto a collection agency, they don’t formally transfer title to the debt. That would be too expensive, given how little they are selling the debt for. So instead they just pass over a simple spreadsheet, with a debtor’s name and the amount of money he owes. And that spreadsheet will never stand up in court.

In general, it’s a good idea for people to pay their debts. But there’s an exception to that rule, and that’s when those debts have already been defaulted on. At that point, a person’s credit score is completely shot, the people who lent the money have already written it off, and even if the debtor pays the collectors back in full, the original lenders won’t see any of the cash. So if a debt collector armed with nothing more than a spreadsheet and a phone number starts pestering you for money, treat him the way you would any other cold-caller looking for your cash: Tell him not to contact you any more -- and then, in the unlikely event that you receive a summons, tell him he has no title to your debt and that you’re not going to pay him a penny.

The attacks on Christians in Iraq by the Islamic State terror army, formerly known as ISIS, amount to “genocide” in pursuit of a “Muslim-only” nation, and President Obama needs to stop the “exterminations,” contend two representatives of Christians in the troubled nation.

WND reported Tuesday atrocities by ISIS include beheading of children, crucifixion, execution and mass burials, sometimes of live victims.

Two advocates for the Iraqi Christian community, which has existed since the time of Christ, told Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel that Obama seems not to realize the gravity of the ISIS threat.

Nahren Anweya of the Assyrian Church of the East told Hannity the beheadings are one tactic in an ISIS effort to kill all non-Muslim.

“They are at full force with this genocide, and I believe the president is very well aware of it,” she said. “I don’t believe he understands the urgency of this genocide.”

She said Christians in Iraq were horrified to hear Obama say the military would protect “American personnel” but no one else.

“He needs to acknowledge the fact there is an … extermination,” she said.

She said reports of the atrocities are true.

“Basically they will cut off a child’s head with a small knife … slowly,” she said.

Such moves are intended to intimidate, she said.

Opium grown near North Korea's border with China is flooding the Northeast Chinese market, according to an activist group.

Dream Makers for North Korea, led by former lawmaker Park Sun-young that aids North Korean defectors, on Monday unveiled a picture of an opium poppy field in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province. The group says it was taken in July last year by a source in China who infiltrated North Korea.

Park said in order to avoid detection by U.S. satellites, the North cultivates the poppies in many different areas along the border.

Among the three South Korean drug smugglers who were executed in China recently, two were nabbed while trafficking North Korean opium in northeastern China’s Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces.

….. Repairing an economy suffering from decades of neglect isn’t a six-year job. Although Aquino and his finance chief, Cesar Purisima, set the stage for a cleaner government, the Philippines’s 7 percent jobless rate is the highest among major Asian economies. Aquino and Purisima did much in four years to revitalize growth but they could have done more. Now is the time to accelerate efforts to create new jobs, as opposed to shipping millions of workers overseas.

“The problems we inherited, we have solved,” Aquino declared yesterday. “The ones that are here, we are solving. The ones that are to come, we are preparing for.”
Yet the risk, as is often the case in the Philippines, is who comes next. In 1998, when Fidel Ramos left the presidency, few thought his successors could derail his economic-reform drive. Estrada and Arroyo (both were arrested on corruption charges) did just that. So, the stability of a geopolitically important nation of 100 million-plus people hinges on continuity.

It’s anyone’s guess whether the current frontrunner, Vice President Jejomar Binay, is such a leader. Perhaps we’ll know after authorities get to the bottom of a multimillion-dollar plunder case against him dating back to alleged actions during his days as Makati City mayor in 2007. It’s also worth noting that the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos (Aquino’s dad was assassinated in 1983 while trying to unseat Marcos) may run in 2016. So might Senator Bong Revilla, who was arrested last month on graft charges.

The Philippines has traveled a long way in just a few years. Its growth and confidence have enough momentum to withstand some bad decisions, perhaps even some of the corruption so endemic to public affairs. But amid such political risks and economic imponderables, it’s incumbent upon Aquino to use every day he has left in Malacaan Palace to ensure his reforms can’t be easily undone.

When I last met Aquino in February, in that very palace, he made a point of showing me the official presidential portrait of his mother, the late Corazon Aquino. “She taught me to remember that the Filipino is worth fighting for,” he said. I like that he repeated that line in yesterday’s address. Because that’s exactly what he needs to do each day for another two years.

SCIENTISTS believe they are closer to working out how to stop an asteroid that could potentially wipe out Earth in 2880. 

A paper published in the journal Nature by researchers at the University of Tennessee has found that blowing up the space rock, like in the movie Armageddon, could cause several collisions with the earth with devastating consequences.

They believe that the way to avoid calamity is to make changes to the surface of the asteroid in order to break it up in outer space.

The chances of the asteroid, 1950 DA, hitting Earth on 16 March 2880 is just one in 300. While the chances are small, for example, you have more chance of being shot dead in the US, scientists are not taking any risks with this one.

“Following the February 2013 asteroid impact in Chelyabinsk, Russia, there is renewed interest in figuring out how to deal with the potential hazard of an asteroid impact,” Dr Ben Rozitis, a postdoctoral researcher, told the journal Nature. “Understanding what holds these asteroids together can inform strategies to guard against future impacts.”

A huge asteroid spinning at an "impossible" rate is hurtling toward Earth, on track to wipe out human life - but not until 16 March, 2880.

Asteroid 1950 DA has a one-in-300 chance of hitting the globe on the appointed day. Although that may sound like slim odds, it is the most likely asteroid to collide with our planet.

Researchers at the University of Tennessee are not taking any chances, studying the asteroid for indications of how best to throw it off its course.

According to their research, published in the science journal Nature, the asteroid has a diameter of one kilometre and is travelling at nine miles a second relative to the Earth.

It is also rotating so fast - once every 2 hours and six minutes - that it "defies gravity". Rotation at that speed should cause the space rock to fly apart, but cohesive forces called van der Waals are holding it together. These forces have never before been detected on an asteroid.

Ukraine said its troops attacked and partially destroyed a column of armed vehicles that had crossed the border from Russian territory, while Russia said it was concerned about an attack on another convoy carrying aid.

Ukrainian government troops engaged the vehicles that had arrived overnight through a rebel-held section of the border, Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for the country’s military, told reporters in Kiev today. Ukrainian soldiers continue to come under shelling, including rounds fired from Russia, he said.

The government in Kiev has for months said that separatist rebels in its easternmost regions are receiving support from Russia, which backs them with artillery fire. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the Ukrainian unrest. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow said it was concerned about potential attempts to disrupt the humanitarian convoy and repeated a call for a cease-fire to allow for aid delivery.

The incursion last night isn’t seen by Ukraine as a new development or a possible start of an invasion by Russia, Defense Ministry spokesman Leonid Matyukhin said by phone earlier. The vehicles were painted white to camouflage the operation as a peacekeeping mission, he said.

A new Russian ground-launched cruise missile is a significant violation of a strategic arms treaty, a senior State Department official said on Thursday.

Rose Gottemoeller, undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, said during a speech that Moscow’s breach of the 1987 intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty poses “a serious threat to strategic stability.”

“It is that aspect of a ground-launched cruise missile that is the one about which we have determined is a Russian [treaty] violation,” Gottemoeller said during a U.S. Strategic Command conference on nuclear deterrence.

It was the first time the Obama administration acknowledged publicly the specific missile behind the treaty breach announced late last month.

Gottemoeller said the U.S. government offered to hold high-level talks with Russia with the goal of rectifying the treaty breach at the time Moscow was notified of the violation in formal diplomatic channels.

Russia broke off most bilateral talks with the United States following the imposition of U.S. sanctions for Russia’s military annexation of Crimea’s Ukraine in June.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep regret Friday over Japanese Cabinet ministers and politicians paying their respects to the wartime criminals enshrined at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.

In a press release, the foreign ministry said the controversial visits on the 69th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II were "deplorable."
Seoul urged them to stop their revisionist efforts and take sincere action to make amends for Japan's past.

On Friday, two Japanese Cabinet ministers and nearly 100 lawmakers paid homage at the controversial shrine, prompting immediate condemnation from South Korea.
The ruling Saenuri Party and the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) slammed the Japanese politicians.

The executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police criticized President Obama Thursday for his remarks about law enforcement in Ferguson, Mo.
"I would contend that discussing police tactics from Martha's Vineyard is not helpful to ultimately calming the situation," director Jim Pasco said in an interview with The Hill.

"I think what he has to do as president and as a constitutional lawyer is remember that there is a process in the United States and the process is being followed, for good or for ill, by the police and by the county and by the city and by the prosecutors’ office," Pasco added.
Pasco harkened back to 2009, when Obama criticized a Massachusetts police officer for arresting Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, when he was attempting to break into his own home. Obama said the officer had “acted stupidly.”
"That is one where the president spoke precipitously without all the facts," Pasco said, adding that the current situation "is a much larger and more tragic incident."

A new report reveals that US President Barack Obama's administration stopped a shipment of missiles to Israel late last month and tightened weapons shipment procedures to Israel, as tensions between the two nations grow amid Operation Protective Edge.

The report in the Wall Street Journal, released Wednesday night, cites US officials in Obama's administration, who say they discovered Israel had requested a large number of Hellfire missiles directly through military-to-military channels. An initial batch of the missiles was about to be shipped, according to sources in Israel and the US Congress.

At that point, the Pentagon stepped in and put the transfer on hold. Further, top White House officials instructed various US military agencies to consult with the US State Department before approving any additional requests from Israel.

A senior Obama administration official was quoted in the report as saying the transfer shouldn't have been a routine "check-the-box approval," given Israel's defensive operation in Gaza against Hamas, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the US.

The decision to clamp down on future transfers was the equivalent of "the United States saying 'the buck stops here. Wait a second…It's not OK anymore,'" said the official.

THE RUSSIANS ARE READY TO POUNCE UKRAINE AS ARMOR TRUCKS ROLLS SHORT OF BORDER FEELING FOR WEAKNESS

The white trucks of humanitarian aid rumbled through Russia in a convoy stretching for miles, moving slowly southwards on the M4 highway, amid a landscape of fertile fields and Ladas stopped at the roadside – their boots overflowing with watermelons for sale.

But, while the trucks came to a halt well short of Ukraine's border, a different Russian convoy did make the crossing into Ukrainian territory late on Thursday evening.

The Guardian saw a column of 23 armoured personnel carriers, supported by fuel trucks and other logistics vehicles with official Russian military plates, travelling towards the border near the Russian town of Donetsk – about 200km away from Donetsk, Ukraine.

After pausing by the side of the road until nightfall, the convoy crossed into Ukrainian territory, using a rough dirt track and clearly crossing through a gap in a barbed wire fence that demarcates the border. Armed men were visible in the gloom by the border fence as the column moved into Ukraine. Kiev has lost control of its side of the border in this area.

The trucks are unlikely to represent a full-scale official Russian invasion, and it was unclear how far they planned to travel inside Ukrainian territory and how long they would stay. But it was incontrovertible evidence of what Ukraine has long claimed – that Russian troops are active inside its borders.

Hollywood is pouring money into the midterm elections, with A-listers such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Barbra Streisand all coughing up blockbuster bucks.

The donations are largely aimed at keeping the Senate in Democratic hands. Republicans, who have the political winds at their backs, need to pick up six seats to win control of the upper chamber.

Streisand, a longtime Democratic donor, opened her checkbook in several competitive Senate races, according to Federal Election Commission data collected and analyzed by The Hill. 

In addition to a $10,000 donation to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and $2,600 to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Streisand gave $1,000 to the campaigns of Democratic Sens. Mark Udall (Colo.), Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Jeff Merkley, (Ore.) and Mark Begich (Alaska), all top GOP targets.  

One of the biggest recipients of the entertainment industry’s dollars is Kentucky Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, whose is in a tight battle against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R).

Her donor list reads like a who’s who of Tinseltown: producer J.J. Abrams, Ben Affleck, comedian Jack Black, “Avatar” director James Cameron, Nicolas Cage, Danny DeVito, Cameron Diaz, DiCaprio, Jennifer Garner, director Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Jerry Seinfeld, Mike Myers, and “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm all giving $5,200 each, the maximum amount an individual can give to a single candidate in a two-year election cycle.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Monday that it lost $2 billion in its most recent quarter, despite some positive signs for the cash-strapped agency's bottom line.

The USPS’s revenue grew by some $327 million over the same period last year, a jump of 2 percent. The revenue increase was largely driven by shipments of packages, an area where the agency has even expanded into Sunday service. Package revenue grew 6.6 percent this most recent quarter, as more people turned to online shopping.

Volume for first-class mail, the Postal Service’s most popular product, declined once more, marking a full eight years of quarterly drops.

But revenue for first-class mail increased 3.2 percent, due to an emergency price increase for stamps that the USPS was allowed to implement this year. Advertisers also used the mail more frequently, though the rate increase also mostly fueled the 5.1 percent increase in standard mail revenue.

“We’ve been effective in developing and marketing our products, and we’re improving how we leverage data and technology — all providing a higher return on mail for many customers and causing them to take a fresh look at the Postal Service,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in a statement.

Still, the agency’s losses in the most recent quarter far outstripped the USPS’s red ink from a year ago, when it lost $740 million between April and June.

Postal officials blamed the increased losses on a $1.5 billion increase in expenses, propelled by a jump in workers’ compensation costs. Without those new costs, caused by a change in interest rates, this quarter's losses would have been similar to 2013.

The Postal Service’s losses for the first nine months of the year have now climbed more than $4 billion, and senior officials said the tight financial situation had left them unable to make investments in the agency’s vehicle fleet and necessary parts of its infrastructure.

Weasel Zippers has revived an old video of Barack Obama promising not to take vacations if he were elected president.

The video features then-Sen. Obama discussing his book “The Audacity Of Hope” with New York Times columnist Bob Herbert in 2008.

The future president was talking about how those running for president need to be prepared to “give their life to it.”

“The bargain that any president strikes with is, you give me this office and in turn my, fears, doubts, insecurities, foibles, need for sleep, family life, vacations, leisure is gone,” Obama said. “I am giving myself to you.”

Obama went on to say that “the American people should have no patience for what’s going on in your head because you’ve got a job to do” and that people should only run for president if they’re willing to make that sacrifice.

When asked by the host if he could imagine himself making that kind of commitment, he said, “Sure.”
