Tens of thousands of Italians staged a mass rally in Rome’s Circus Maximus on Saturday to urge the government to drop legislation that offers homosexual couples legal recognition and limited adoption rights.

The much-contested bill was presented to parliament last week and is due to be voted on in February, but the government itself is deeply divided over the issue and opponents are hopeful they can sink it, as they have done it the past.
Trains and buses ferried in protesters from around Italy to take part in the event, staged in Ancient Rome’s famed chariot racing stadium. But while organisers had been hoping to attract one million people and authorities had prepared for 500,000, journalists at the scene estimated the numbers to be in the tens of thousands. Official numbers were not immediately available.
“We want the whole law to be withdrawn, no ifs and no buts,” said one of the organisers, Simone Pillon, sporting a red bow tie. He took particular offence at a clause in the law which would let gays adopt the biological children of their partner.
Critics say this would encourage surrogacy, which is outlawed in Italy. “We cannot let children pay for the desires or caprices of adults. Children need to have a father and a mother,” said Pillon.
Showing how polarised the nation is, Saturday’s rally came a week after thousands of people took to the streets of Italy to demand that the “civil union” bill, which relates to both homosexual and heterosexual couples, be approved.
Church Influence
Italy is the last major country in Western Europe that has not offered rights or recognition to same-sex couples and has been criticised regularly by the European Court of Justice for failing to act.

Pregnant women should be told they can safely enjoy runny eggs, almost 30 years after the salmonella crisis, according to a new report.

British eggs with the red "lion" brand carry such a low risk that vulnerable groups like expectant mothers and the elderly can eat them lightly cooked or raw in things like mayonnaise, the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF) said.

The report by its egg working group, the first since 2001, said lion-branded eggs should be categorised "very low" risk because of "a major reduction in the microbiological risk from salmonella" in British hen eggs in the last 15 years thanks to improved hygiene and storage.

Obama administration officials are scheduled to meet in Los Angeles on Friday with Mayor Eric Garcetti, local nonprofits and business owners to discuss ways to encourage immigrants to become U.S. citizens.
The meeting is part of a multi-city tour by the White House’s Task Force on New Americans, which the administration previewed in a call with reporters Thursday.
Senior Deputy Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement Julie Chavez Rodriguez said Friday’s meeting will allow federal officials and members of Garcetti’s staff to coordinate with local leaders in business, nonprofit and community organizations.

“Starting in California is a perfect kickoff from our perspective,” she said.

In recent years California has moved repeatedly to provide rights, benefits and protections to immigrants in the country illegally, including in-state tuition, driver's licenses, rules to limit deportations and state-funded healthcare for children.
Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose have signed on to participate in the task force, as have cities in 25 other states.
Rodriguez praised several California efforts, including the partnership between U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Los Angeles Public Library system to create “citizenship corners” at every branch and hold citizenship classes, increased funding for citizenship and naturalization services by the Napa Valley Community Foundation, and targeting of individuals eligible for naturalization and connecting them with resources in San Francisco.

An increasing number of married women in North Korea are reportedly looking for rich men for a living.

North Korean defector-led media New Focus reported Thursday that adultery is not a crime in the North, and such acts of cheating are arranged under mutual consent of wives and husbands. But when those who commit adultery cause any sort of harm to people around them, they are charged with disorderly conduct.

"It has become common for women in North Korea to cheat on their spouses," North Korean defector Kim Hyun-sook said. "More and more married women make that choice for their family due to the threat of poverty."

Kim also said that those women approach rich men on purpose, and their husbands overlook such behavior and tell their spouses instead to take charge of their family finances. Some even encourage their wives to go out and meet rich men, and some even arrange a meeting with them through a third party to pull themselves out of poverty.

"This is not acceptable in South Korea, but many women in the North have no other choice for their livelihood," she said. "The North Korean government should take the blame for this."

North Korean defector Jung Nam-hyuk said: "People in North Korea say that if you are divorced, you are guilty, but those who cheat are innocent."

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has lost more than $6 billion in after-hours trading on Thursday, as Amazon’s stock dropped in response to the company’s fourth quarter earnings report. He’s also lost his ranking as the fourth richest person in the world.
As of 5:00 p.m. ET, Bezos was worth $49.8 billion, barely holding on to his place as the world’s fourth richest person. By 5:30 p.m. ET, Bezos had lost another $800 million dollars, which puts him in fifth place behind Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico, who is now the fourth richest person in the world with a net worth of $49.6 billion.
Investors expected a positive report from Amazon, but the company missed analyst expectations in its fourth quarter earnings report. Amazon reported a profit of $1.00 per share, while analysts expected an average profit of $1.56. In response to the news, the stock fell to a low of $545.97 after hours from its closing share price of  $635.55 per share. As of 5:00 p.m. ET, Amazon was trading at $562.80. 
While Bezos’ fortune fell more than $6 billion in the first hour of after-hours trading, the billionaire’s net worth has still increased dramatically in the past year.  Bezos’ net worth is up more than 40% since Forbes published its annual Billionaires List in 2015. At that time, he was the 15th richest person in the world with a net worth of $34.8 billion.
Bezos first appeared on Forbes’ list of the 400 Richest Americans in 1998, four years after he founded Amazon, with a net worth of $1.6 billion.

A Harris County grand jury investigating allegations that a Planned Parenthood clinic in Houston illegally sold the tissue of aborted fetuses has cleared the organization of wrongdoing and instead indicted two anti-abortion activists behind the undercover videos that sparked the probe.

Secret videographers David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt were both indicted on charges of tampering with a governmental record, a second-degree felony that carries a punishment of up to 20 years in prison. Daleiden received an additional misdemeanor indictment under the law prohibiting the purchase and sale of human organs........

......The national organization of Planned Parenthood had said in a letter to Congress that Daleiden was involved in secretly recording staff and patients at least 65 times over the last eight years.
The organization alleged that Daleiden and others used aliases, obtained fake government I.D.s, and formed a fake tissue procurement company in an effort to gain access to private areas and record private conversations to be deceptively edited to create a false impression.
The second indictment for Daleiden suggests that the grand jury found that he went too far in trying to get Planned Parenthood to admit to selling tissue. The crime, a class A misdemeanor is committed if a person intentionally offers to buy or offers to sell a human organ, including fetal tissue. If convicted, the maximum punishment is a year in jail.

NEWARK, N.J. — A Seattle man charged with killing four people in Washington and New Jersey in 2014 to protest U.S. foreign policy was on a federal terrorism watch list and wrote in his journal that he planned to follow the Islamic State group and “learn the ways of jihadis,” a New Jersey state prosecutor said Wednesday.

The details came out before Ali Muhammad Brown was sentenced to 36½ years in prison on an unrelated armed-robbery case.

The armed robbery occurred during the same time period as four killings now linked to Brown, three in Washington and one in New Jersey. Brown is still awaiting trial in all four slayings. He also faces a charge of terrorism, the first and only time New Jersey’s state terrorism statute has been used.
