Even though the Black Friday weekend had even more shopping hours this year -- thanks to merchants opening their stores on Thanksgiving Day itself -- sales slumped enough that some industry executives are worried that it's a harbinger for how the overall holiday shopping season will perform.

According to Nielsen Music, album sales declined 15.2 percent for the week ending Nov. 30, when sales were 7.28 million units, versus the nearly 8.6 million units scanned last year during the corresponding week ending Dec. 1. That decline is significantly higher than the 12.3 percent decline in album sales that the industry has experienced so far this year.

Merchants say they have their fingers crossed that the weak opening will not carry over throughout the remaining holiday shopping days this year. While overall sales were depressed, there were a couple of bright spots.

For one, the online CD sales and mail-order sector saw sales increase by 16.5 percent this year, producing just above 1 million units in sales. In addition, vinyl album sales jumped nearly 50 percent to 259,000 units from 173,000 units, thanks to the Record Store Day "Back To Black" titles. According to the Record Store Day website, about 100 titles were offered at indie record stores across the U.S.

GREAT BRITAIN TO RETURN TO THE MIDDLE EAST WITH A £15MILLION NAVAL BASE PORT IN BAHRAIN TO ENFORCE STABILITY IN THE REGION

Britain is to open a new £15 million naval base in Bahrain, the country’s Foreign Office announced Friday, which will be first permanent UK military presence in the Middle East in more than 40 years.

Under a deal signed with the Bahraini government, improvements will be made to the Gulf state’s Mina Salman Port, which is already used on an ad-hoc basis by four UK mine-hunter ships, creating a permanent forward operating base.

The base will “enable Britain to send more and larger ships to reinforce stability in the Gulf” said UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon. “We will now be based again in the Gulf for the long term,” he said.

The move represents a potentially significant shift in British defence strategy.

The country has not had a permanent military base in the Middle East since it formally withdrew from the region in 1971, a long-term result of the Suez crisis of the 1950s where Britain was forced into a humiliating backdown in the face of international pressure.

The episode gave rise to the expression “east of Suez”, an evocative phrase in British politics to denote the country’s military presence, or lack thereof, in the Middle and Far East in the post-Empire years.

Britain’s return “east of Suez” may suggest to some a return to the country’s imperialistic ambitions of the past despite its decline as a global power.

But with its armed forces the smallest they have been in more than a century, the UK is less well equipped now to police an area as volatile as the Middle East than it was in the 1970s, which raises the question as to why the government has decided to head back there now.

Last month, Rolling Stone published a story titled "A Rape on Campus" by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, which described a brutal gang rape of a woman named Jackie at a University of Virginia fraternity house; the university's failure to respond to this alleged assault – and the school's troubling history of indifference to many other instances of alleged sexual assaults. The story generated worldwide headlines and much soul-searching at UVA. University president Teresa Sullivan promised a full investigation and also to examine the way the school responds to sexual assault allegations.

Because of the sensitive nature of Jackie's story, we decided to honor her request not to contact the man she claimed orchestrated the attack on her nor any of the men she claimed participated in the attack for fear of retaliation against her. In the months Erdely spent reporting the story, Jackie neither said nor did anything that made Erdely, or Rolling Stone's editors and fact-checkers, question Jackie's credibility. Her friends and rape activists on campus strongly supported Jackie's account. She had spoken of the assault in campus forums. We reached out to both the local branch and the national leadership of the fraternity where Jackie said she was attacked. They responded that they couldn't confirm or deny her story but had concerns about the evidence. 

In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story.

AN American and a South African have been killed as US forces tried to free them from al-Qaeda in Yemen, with President Barack Obama accusing the militants of “barbaric murder”.

Mr Obama said he had authorised the joint attempt involving US special forces to rescue American photojournalist Luke Somers because his life was believed to be “in imminent danger”.

South African teacher Pierre Korkie was also killed in the raid, which came just a day before he was due to be freed after more than a year in captivity, according to a charity that had been negotiating his release.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula had on Thursday threatened to execute Somers, 33, who was kidnapped more than a year ago in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, within three days if Washington failed to meet unspecified demands.

A law professor who taught President Obama is criticizing his landmark climate rule for power plants, calling it an overreach of power that threatens energy supplies.

Laurence Tribe, a professor at Harvard Law School, was hired to write comments on the rule by Peabody Energy Corp., the largest coal-mining company in the world. Massey & Gail, Tribe’s law firm, publicized the comments Friday, after they were formally filed Monday.

“The defects in the proposed rule transcend political affiliations and policy positions and cut across partisan lines,” Tribe wrote, asking that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) withdraw the proposal.

“It is a remarkable example of executive overreach and an administrative agency’s assertion of power beyond its statutory authority. Indeed, the proposed rule raises serious constitutional questions.”

The rule, proposed in June, seeks to cut the power sector’s carbon emissions 30 percent by 2030. The EPA expects the rule to take a huge bite out of coal’s market share in the power sector.

A North Korean religious association slammed a South Korean Christian group's plan to light a big Christmas tree in the Aegibong Peak Observatory in Gimpo, south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

It said Friday that the lighting is, "an act of madness and it is unacceptable."
"The Christian Council of Korea (CCK) attempts to use religion as a means to spur confrontation between the people of the two sides. It should realize that the malicious plan could lead to a military action from the North," the North's association said.
The reaction came weeks after the CCK unveiled a plan to set up a big Christmas tree in the observatory and light it on Dec. 23. The tree will be dressed in Christmas lights for two weeks until Jan. 6, the group said.

The Ministry of National Defense approved the plan.
North Korea's strong reaction to the Christmas tree is not unusual.
It has threatened military action whenever plans to light Christmas trees near the border were announced during the former Lee Myung-bak government.
It was part of a "psychological warfare" tactic which resumed during the Lee government. Christmas lighting near the DMZ was suspended in 2003 during the liberal Roh Moo-hyun government at the request of North Korea.

On Aegibong Hill, there was a 10-foot tall tree-shaped steel tower where Christmas lights were hung in the past. The tower was removed in October.
Those who are familiar with the reclusive state say it is no wonder that North Korea takes issue with the Christmas lights.
Cha Kyung-sook, a North Korean defector, said culture shock is a key reason behind the regime's fear of such displays.

North Koreans will be given a chance to compare the stark contrast in the realities of the two societies through Christmas lights and will conclude that they were duped, she said.
"North Korea is suffering from shortages of electricity and they turn off all lights, including the ones on the statue of its founding father Kim Il-sung in Pyongyang," she told The Korea Times.

"Those who see Christmas lights at night will feel that capitalist South Korea is not as bad as it is thought to be. They were brainwashed to believe that capitalism is all about greed and does nothing good for the people. When they see the Christmas lights at night during wintertime, they might question the truth of what they were taught in the reclusive society," Cha said.

A Navy civilian engineer has been indicted on charges he tried to steal schematics of an aircraft carrier under construction and have them sent to Egypt.

Federal prosecutors said Mostafa Ahmed Awwad, 35, of Yorktown, Va., was arrested Friday on two counts of attempted exportation of defense articles and technical data.

Prosecutors said Awwad tried to steal technical data in the designs of the USS Gerald R. Ford in late October. Awwad provided computer drawings downloaded from the Navy to an undercover FBI agent posing as an Egyptian intelligence officer.

The Ford is the lead ship in a new class of carriers. It is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in 2016.

According to an FBI affidavit, Awwad began working for Navy last February in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard's nuclear engineering and planning department.

An undercover agent speaking in Arabic contacted Awwad in September and the pair met the next day at a park in Hampton. At the meeting, Awwad asserted that was his intention to use his position of trust with the Navy to obtain military technology for use by the Egyptian government.

It is interesting to watch the aftermath of the Eric Garner Grand Jury decision coming so soon after Ferguson. “White Police Officer Once Again Kills Unarmed Black Man – And Gets Away with It” is already the reaction in many places. Sides are drawn and the usual suspects race-bait, pontificate, riot and ask for calm, or in Jesse Jackson’s case, donations.

Other than there being a white police officer and a black man dying while resisting arrest, these cases are not similar, no matter what many would like you to believe. In one instance, the Grand Jury determined that Officer Wilson killed Michael Brown in self-defense. Although so far we have not been privy to the evidence in the Garner decision, the video is fairly compelling that none of the officers’ lives were in jeopardy.

So what did Eric Garner do to cause his death? Apparently, he was suspected of selling loose cigarettes. In New York City. What if he were selling large sodas? Or salt packets? He probably would have met the same fate, because he was “resisting arrest.”

We are already seeing protests, soon to be ramped up once the professional agitators arrive. We’ll see pre-printed signs lamenting Eric Garner’s death and demanding justice. Some New Yorkers will be screaming for the Federal Government to step in. But why? After all, he was supposedly a smoker, or at least enabling smoking. Maybe even a salter and large soda drinker. They hate those people. They must, since they pass laws and elect politicians that either tax these items out of reach or simply eliminate them. They wanted more government and Eric Garner got it.

It’s common knowledge President Obama signed an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to forgive millions of illegal aliens for their past violations of immigration law, right?

Wrong.

Today the National Archives and Records Administration, responsible for such maintaining such filings, said no such executive order was ever signed or filed, confirming WND’s report Wednesday.

A National Archives librarian, Jeffrey Hartley, made the confirmation in an email Thursday to WND.

“As I indicated, it would appear that there is not an Executive Order stemming from the President’s remarks on November 20 on immigration,” Hartley wrote.

Hartley said that neither of the executive orders Obama signed in Las Vegas the day after his announcement fulfill his plan to defer deportations and grant work permits to up to 5 million illegal aliens.

“The only two documents that I have located are two Presidential Memoranda, which are available from the White House site,” Hartley’s email continued. “They can also be found in the November 26, 2014 issue of the Federal Register.”

The two documents Hartley referenced were the two executive orders Obama signed in Las Vegas Nov. 21……..

On Wednesday, attorneys general in 16 other states joined in the lawsuit with Abbott charging Obama’s immigration action violated the U.S. Constitution’s “Take Care” clause and failed to follow the Administrative Procedure Act’s guidelines for implementing new policies, including a comment period to outline the changes’ benefits.

Abbott said in a statement the president “is abdicating his responsibility to faithfully enforce laws that were duly enacted by Congress and attempting to rewrite immigration laws, which he has no authority to do – something the president himself has previously admitted.”

Abbott’s press office referred WND to the complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas asking for declaratory and injunctive relief.

The complaint states: “The President’s new policies were effectuated through Defendant Johnson’s DHS Directive.”

If confirms WND’s report that the only Obama administration document relevant to the plan Obama announced Nov. 20 is a DHS memorandum signed by Johnson titled “Exercising Prosecutorial Discretion with Respect to Individuals Who Came to the United States as Children with Respect to Certain Individuals Who Are the Parents of U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.”

Abbott’s complaint further indicated the only basis for the DHS memo directing the change in the operation of the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program was not a presidential executive order but a legal opinion written by the principal deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel, Karl R. Thompson, to advise Johnson and White House counsel.

The principal argument in Abbott’s complaint is that the DHS directive violates the president’s constitutional duty to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed,” as set forth by the U.S. Constitution in Article II, Section 3, Clause 5.

“The Take Care Clause limits the President’s power and ensures that he will faithfully execute Congress’s laws – not rewrite them under the guise of executive ‘discretion,’” Abbott’s complaint stated in the first count.

The second count further confirmed WND’s reporting that Johnson’s Nov. 20 memorandum has not been filed in the Federal Register, which means it has not been available for public comment as required by federal law for federal administrative agencies seeking to engage in rulemaking.

“The Defendants promulgated and relied upon the DHS Directive without authority and without notice-and-comment rulemaking,” Abbott’s complaint specified in Count Two. “It is therefore unlawful.”

A wide swath of the Philippines, including the capital Manila, braced Friday for a dangerously erratic and powerful typhoon approaching from the Pacific, about a year after the country was lashed by Typhoon Haiyan that left more than 7,300 people dead.

Typhoon Hagupit Filipino for “smash” strengthened overnight with its sustained winds intensifying to 215 kilometers (134 miles) per hour and gusts of 250 kph (155 mph). The local weather agency PAGASA’s forecasts show the typhoon may hit Eastern Samar province late Saturday or early Sunday.

But a forecast by the U.S. military’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Hawaii said Hagupit (pronounced HA’-goo-pit) may veer northward after making landfall and possibly threaten Manila, which has population of more than 12 million people.

“We have alerted the people of Manila and we’re ready,” Mayor Joseph Estrada said, while acknowledging “these typhoons change direction all the time.”

It is currently 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the country’s eastern coast in the Pacific Ocean and moving slowly.

If the first forecast holds, Hagupit’s path will send it barreling inland into central Philippines along the same route where Typhoon Haiyan leveled villages and left more than 7,300 dead and missing in November last year.

South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co., which has been engaging in legal disputes with Apple Inc. over patent infringement, said Friday that a U.S.
court's earlier compensation order worth US$930 million is excessive, adding that it has not copied Apple's products.
In an appeals trial held at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Samsung said the earlier ruling should be overturned as its products do not have the Apple logo and have different home-button designs.
"We have buttons on the bottom front. We have circular holes on the top. We have differently shaped and placed speakers," said Kathleen Sullivan, a Samsung attorney, urging for the earlier ruling to be overturned in an oral argument.
"It is absurd," she said, adding Apple's demand is like asking for the "the profit of an entire car because of infringement of the design of the cupholder." Samsung's latest move comes after a court ruling in May ordered the South Korean tech giant to pay US$930 million in damages for infringing 23 Apple patents related to smartphones and tablets.

Prince Charles’s coronation service should be opened with a reading from the Koran, a senior Church of England bishop said yesterday.

The gesture would be a ‘creative act of accommodation’ to make Muslims feel ‘embraced’ by the nation, Lord Harries of Pentregarth said.

But critics attacked the idea, accusing the Church of ‘losing confidence’ in its own institutions and traditions.

Lord Harries, a former Bishop of Oxford and a leading CofE liberal thinker, said he was sure Charles’s coronation would give scope to leaders of non-Christian religions to give their blessing to the new King.

The former Bishop of Oxford, who continues to serve as an assistant bishop in the diocese of Southwark, made the suggestion about the Koran during a House of Lords debate. He told peers the Church of England should take the lead in ‘exercising its historic position in a hospitable way’.

He said that at a civic service in Bristol Cathedral last year authorities had agreed to a reading of the opening passage of the Koran before the beginning of the Christian ritual. He said: ‘It was a brilliant creative act of accommodation that made the Muslim high sheriff feel, as she said, warmly embraced but did not alienate the core congregation.

‘That principle of hospitality can and should be reflected in many public ceremonies, including the next coronation service.’

Noe Iniguez, 36, from Los Angeles, posted a malicious comment about the woman on her employer's Facebook page in December 2013. In March this year, he posted a topless photo of her on the same webpage.
BuzzFeed said he labeled her a "drunk" and a "slut" and said the company should fire her.
Judge David Fields sentenced Iniguez to a year in jail and 36 months' probation. Judge Fields also ordered him to participate in domestic violence counseling and to stay away from the woman.

Obama is then scheduled to meet with local and national civil rights leaders.

The third session will take place among elected officials, law enforcement officials and community and faith leaders “to discuss how communities and law enforcement can work together to build trust to strengthen neighborhoods across the country.”

China conducted the third flight test of a new hypersonic missile this week as part of its strategic nuclear program and efforts to develop delivery vehicles capable of defeating U.S. countermeasures, defense officials said.

The flight test of the developmental Wu-14 hypersonic glide vehicle was monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies Tuesday during a flight test in western China.

The latest flight test followed earlier tests of the Wu-14 on Jan. 9 and Aug. 7. The three tests indicate that China’s development of a strike vehicle capable of traveling up to eight times the speed of sound is a high-priority element in China’s large-scale military buildup.

A Pentagon spokesman confirmed the test but declined to provide details.

“We are aware of reports regarding this test and we routinely monitor foreign defense activities,” Marine Corps Lt. Col. Jeff Pool told the Washington Free Beacon.

“However, we don’t comment on our intelligence or assessments of foreign weapon systems,” Pool added, noting that the Pentagon has encouraged China to adopt greater openness with regard to its defense investments and military objectives “to avoid miscalculation.”

Last month in Beijing, the United States and China agreed to a new military accord that called for notifying each country of major military activities. It could not be learned if the Chinese notified the Pentagon in advance of the Wu-14 test.

The Wu-14 was launched atop a Chinese ballistic missile and released along the edge of space.

Past tests of the glide vehicle were clocked as reaching an estimated speed of Mach 10, or 10 times the speed of sound—around 7,680 miles per hour.

$2 gasoline is back in the U.S.

An Oncue Express station in Oklahoma City was selling the motor fuel for $1.99 a gallon today, becoming the first one to drop below $2 in the U.S. since July 30, 2010, Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy Organization Inc., said by e-mail from Chicago.

“We knew when we saw crude oil prices drop last week that we’d break the $2 threshold pretty soon, but we didn’t know if it would happen in South Carolina, Texas, Missouri or Oklahoma,” said DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. “Today’s national average, $2.74, now makes the current price we pay a whopping 51 cents per gallon less than what we paid a year ago.”

Gasoline is sliding after OPEC decided last week not to cut production amid a global glut of oil that has already dragged international oil prices down by 37 percent in the past five months. Pump prices have fallen by almost a dollar since reaching this year’s high on April 26.

No arrival time was released and no other patient information was available. The Emory statement stated that they, “cannot share more details out of respect for patient privacy and in accordance with the patient’s wishes.”….

Russia said on Monday it would carry out more than 4,000 military drills next year, with the largest involving "tens of thousands" of servicemen next summer.

Russia has increased the number of military drills to test and improve its military capabilities as ties with the West deteriorated over the crisis in Ukraine.

"The exercises will take place in the summer period simultaneously on several training grounds within Russia and abroad," Yaroslav Roshupkin, a spokesman for Russia's Central Military District, said of the planned "Centre 2015" drills.

"They will be extended in time and bring together under unified command tens of thousands of servicemen of the Central Military District, branches and types of the armed forces, as well as other security ministries and agencies."

He said new weapons would also be tested during the exercises.

The Defence Ministry said next year's plans mark an increase from more than 3,000 drills carried out this year.

The new Army commander in Europe plans to bolster the U.S. armored presence in Poland and the Baltic states and keep rotations of U.S. troops there through next year and possibly beyond to counter Russia.

Lt. Gen. Frederick "Ben" Hodges, who replaced Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell  earlier this month as commander of U.S. Army Europe, said the Army was looking to add about 100 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to the forces in Eastern Europe.

"We are looking at courses of action for how we could pre-position equipment that we would definitely want to put inside a facility where it would be better maintained, that rotational units could then come and draw on it and use it to train, or for contingency purposes," Hodges said in a briefing from Vilnius, Lithuania.

Hodges visited a training site in Lithuania that could be used to store armor and said he would look at similar sites in Estonia and Poland.

"Certainly, I don't see a need to build infrastructure -- a FOB [Forward Operating Base] if you will -- or anything like that, that would be used for U.S. forces," Hodges said.

Last week, total US debt was a meager $17,963,753,617,957.26. Two days later, as updated today, on Black Friday, total outstanding US public debt just hit a new historic level which probably would be better associated with a red color: as of the last work day of November, total US public debt just surpassed $18 trillion for the first time, or $18,005,549,328,561.45 to be precise, of which debt held by the public rose to $12,922,681,725,432.94, an increase of $32 billion in one day.

It also means that total US debt to nominal GDP as of Sept 30, which was $17.555 trillion, is now 103%. Keep in mind this GDP number was artificially increased by about half a trillion dollars a year ago thanks to the "benefit" of R&D and intangibles. Without said definitional change, debt/GDP would now be about 106%.

It also means that total US debt has increased by 70% under Obama, from $10.625 trillion on January 21, 2009 to $18.005 trillion most recently.

A new clash over retirement benefits has come to a head following President Obama’s decision to unilaterally protect up to 5 million illegal immigrants from deportation.

The White House now acknowledges that many of the illegal immigrants spared from deportation under Obama’s sweeping executive action will become eligible for Social Security and Medicare benefits once they reach retirement age.

A central argument in Obama’s defense of the most extensive overhaul to the immigration system in decades was that those given reprieves from deportation would not qualify for Obamacare benefits. The president reminded critics that Dream Act-eligible immigrants previously granted deportation deferrals could not enroll in federal health exchanges.

However, Obama was less eager to wade into the debate about what to do with newly protected immigrants now paying into Social Security. Since it was established in 2004, the industrial complex intended to create economic synergy by teaming up South Korean capital with cheap North Korean labor has been under constant threat of closure whenever things have gone badly because of the standoff over North Korea's nuclear program.

In South Korea, there is optimism regarding the cost-effective trade route which completed a test run last week by successfully shipping 40,500 tons of Siberian bituminous coal to the South via North Korea's Rajin Port.

Due to North Korea, analysts warn, risks lurk on the new trade route which consists of a 54-kilometer land route between Russia's Khasan and North Korea's Rajin and a sea route between the North Korean port to South Korea's coastal cities.

But they say there is a role that Russia can play to reduce such risks because the country is serious about exporting its resources overseas and using the trilateral partnership to revitalize the poverty-stricken Russian Far East.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government supports the move toward hydrogen. It is building hydrogen stations ahead of hosting the 2020 Olympics. Expectations are growing that fuel-cell cars will follow hybrids and electric vehicles in opening up the era of eco-friendly vehicles.

Japan has demanded that South Korea remove monuments set up at home and abroad to mark the victims of the Japanese Imperial Army’s sexual enslavement of Korean women during World War II, government sources said Sunday.
The demand was made during the two countries’ monthly director-general level talks launched earlier this year to resolve thorny bilateral issues, including the so-called comfort women issue. The neighbors held the fifth round of the talks last week.
During the talks, the Japanese side demanded that Seoul remove a statue of a girl in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul and other monuments in several U.S. states, set up to commemorate the comfort women victims, according to the government sources.
Seoul, however, reacted negatively, saying that the government cannot demolish monuments that were installed by private groups through donations, the sources noted.
“If Japan resolves the military comfort women issue, it will naturally influence the (monument building) movement by private groups, and it is not something that the (South Korean) government could guarantee,” a high-ranking government official said. “Our position is that Japan should come up with resolutions that can appease the victims,” he said.

SONY HOLLYWOOD GETS HACKED BY #GOP GUARDIAN OF PEACE–CRIPPLING ITS COMPUTER NETWORK AND PHONE SYSTEM THROWING SONY PICTURES BACK TO THE AGE OF CHALK BOARD AND PAPER ERA

The Guardians of Peace group, which says it is responsible for Monday's attack, releases list of files it says it has found

The situation at Sony Pictures Entertainment is more dire than the studio has allowed to be known, as the fifth day of hackers taking down the studio's computer system continues though a threat to release private information has not materialized, TheWrap has learned.

The studio has taken as much of its functions offline as possible, and managed to get payroll out as well as sustain DVD sales for titles like “Spider-Man” on the all-important Black Friday. One insider said company email is expected to be back on Monday.

But as of Friday the studio's email, phone system and computers remained paralyzed, and in some cases staffers were using whiteboards to get things done. The studio's Twitter accounts have also been hacked, according to two individuals with knowledge of the situation.

And while the studio has set up a parallel system offline, there is apparently no solution that has been found to undo the attack.

According to one insider who spoke to TheWrap: “Every PC in the company is useless and all of the content files have either been stolen or destroyed or locked away.”

The attack by the self-designated “Guardians of Peace” – or #GOP – has been brutally personal. Some PC computer screens at Sony show a shocking image of the heads of studio CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal on a platter with scales of justice, for those who are able to turn on the computers at all, according to the insider.
