North Korea says it could stop its nuclear tests in exchange for signing a peace treaty with the U.S. and a stop to annual military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.

The North's statement is a repeat of past offers that have been rejected by the U.S., which wants Pyongyang to commit to a complete abandonment of nuclear weapons.

The state media late Friday carried the statement by an unnamed spokesman of the North's Foreign Ministry, who called the purported hydrogen bomb test on Jan. 6 a justifiable move to ensure its survival against external threats.

The North's H-bomb claims have been met with condemnation and suspicion. The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war because the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice.

Taiwan's opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen made history on Saturday (Jan 16) by becoming the island's first woman president.
Following her win,  Ms Tsai, who is chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), said she would strive to maintain stability in relations with China.
Ms Tsai won 56.12 per cent of the more than 12 million votes cast. She won 6.89 million votes; Mr Eric Chu of the Kuomintang (KMT) got 3.81 million (31.04 per cent) and Mr James Soong of the People First Party took 1.58 million (12.84 per cent).

"I will build consistent, predictable and sustainable cross-strait relationship," Ms Tsai said as she claimed victory at the DPP’s headquarters in Taipei.
"I also want to emphasise that both sides of the strait have a responsibility to find mutually acceptable means of interaction that are based on dignity and reciprocity," she said.

“Our democratic system, national identity and international space must be respected. Any forms of suppression will harm the stability of cross-strait relations,” she added.

Taiwan's first woman president Tsai Ing-wen gets ready to speak to the media

After Ms Tsai's victory speech, China's Taiwan Affairs Office said it would continue to oppose any Taiwan independence activities.
China's determination to protect its territory and sovereignty was "hard as a rock", the office said in a statement released via the official Xinhua news agency.
Ms Tsai's victory came on the day that outrage erupted over the treatment of 16-year-old Taiwanese K-pop star Chou Tzu-yu who was reportedly forced to record a video apology after angering Chinese netizens by flying a Taiwanese flag in a recent online broadcast. 

Ms Tsai said in her speech that Chou's case had “shaken Taiwanese society”.

After decades of tensions, years of negotiations and months of work to implement the international nuclear deal reached six months ago, Iran has fulfilled its promises, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

The State Department confirmed moments later that the nuclear deal is now implemented. 

The milestone to fully implement the nuclear accord comes despite heated opposition on Capitol Hill and around the country. 

Prominent critics fear that the agreement has only emboldened Iran, by giving its hardline leaders tens of billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for temporary commitments that can easily be broken. 

Hours earlier Saturday, Iranian officials announced that four American prisoners held in Iran — including a Washington Post reporter and a Christian pastor — would be freed, in exchange for six unidentified prisoners in the U.S.

Ahead of the announcement Saturday, Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Vienna, which served as the scene of intense diplomatic negotiations one year ago.

President Obama has hailed the accord as one of the pillars of his presidency, despite broad skepticism from around the country.

A former Dutch soldier has been arrested on suspicion of killing Islamic State militants while fighting alongside Kurdish militiamen in Syria.

The 47-year-old was later released but had to surrender his passport to stop him returning to Syria.
Prosecutors said that Dutch law did not allow the use of force apart from in exceptional circumstances.
"Killing an IS fighter therefore could mean being prosecuted for murder," a statement from prosecutors said.

Foreign fighters

Even though the Netherlands is part of the international coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS), the prosecutors said there was "an important difference between Dutch nationals who travel to Syria on their own to fight against IS and Dutch soldiers who train Iraqi and Kurdish forces".
The Dutch military presence was legal and took place "at the request of the Iraqi government", they added.
The man's name cannot be released under Dutch privacy law and it was unclear when he left the military.
Prosecutors said further investigation into the soldier's involvement was required to decide whether charges would be brought.
The BBC understands that about 100 Western volunteers have joined Kurdish forces in the region - including some Britons.
In some instances they have faced legal troubles on their return to their home countries.
One British former Royal Marine, Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, and one Canadian ex-soldier, John Gallagher, died in northern Syria in 2015 fighting Syria against IS militants.

Sales at U.S. retailers declined in December to wrap the weakest year since 2009, raising concern about the momentum in consumer spending heading into 2016.
The 0.1 percent drop matched the median forecast of 84 economists surveyed by Bloomberg and followed a 0.4 percent gain in November, Commerce Department figures showed Friday in Washington. For all of 2015, purchases climbed 2.1 percent, the smallest advance of the current economic expansion.


The slowdown, including electronics stores, clothing merchants and grocers, indicates Americans probably preferred to sock away the savings from cheaper fuel instead of splurging during the holiday season. While hiring has been robust in recent months, faster wage gains remain elusive, one reason household spending may have a tougher time accelerating as the new year gets under way.
“There isn’t anything encouraging in this report,” said Thomas Simons, a money-market economist at Jefferies Group LLC in New York. “It’s very disappointing. The labor market is in good shape, which suggests the outlook is probably better than this.”
Estimates in the Bloomberg survey for retail sales ranged from a decline of 1 percent to a 0.3 percent advance. The November tally was revised up from a previously reported 0.2 percent increase.

What on Earth is happening in the sky?
A series of spectacular images of the sun were caught on camera this week from New York to Hawaii, with some saying they see angels, doves and crosses.
A photograph of Wednesday’s sunrise in Hawaii caught the attention of seasoned photographer Amy Langley from the town of Koloa on the island of Kauai.
“The sunrise was so beautiful on my way to work that I stopped on the side of the road and snapped a photo. And I got … this,” she said.
“Looks like an angel,” said one of Langley’s friends on Facebook. Others suggested: “Your guardian angel” as well as “an angel or a dove.”.....

The same morning of Jan. 13 that Langley took her photo in Hawaii, Mechaele Loraff pulled her vehicle over in Buchanan, Michigan, to take a photo of the sunrise.
Once she looked at the photo, she noticed an obvious shape of a cross.

S KOREA AND THE US MILITARY WILL NOT LET N KOREA GET THE LAST WORD WITH ITS FORWARD PUSH FOR DESTRUCTION OF WESTERN CAPITALISTISM - AS THE US SENDS THE MESSAGE IN STYLE WITH A NUCLEAR READY AND BUNKER BUSTING MOB FLY OVER THE CONTINENT OF S KOREA WITH THE B-52

The U.S. deployed its strategic nuclear-capable B-52 bomber to South Korea in a show of force against North Korea on Sunday, four days after the communist state claimed to have conducted a hydrogen bomb test.


The deployment was part of the allies’ coordinated military steps to respond to Pyongyang’s latest provocation. As a first step, Seoul resumed its loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the heavily fortified border last Friday.

The B-52 bomber, which is a core element of the U.S.’ strategic nuclear force, took off from Andersen Air Force base in Guam early in the morning and reached the U.S. Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, at around noon, the U.S. Forces Korea told the media.

Escorted by two South Korean F-15K fighters and two U.S. F-16 fighters, the long-range bomber staged a low-altitude flight over the Osan Air Base and then returned to Guam.

Upon the bomber’s arrival, South Korea’s Air Force Operations commander Lt. Gen. Lee Wang-keun and U.S. Seventh Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy issued separate statements in which they underscored the allies’ resolve to maintain a robust deterrence and fend off Pyongyang’s potential provocations.

“The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and to maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula, to include extended deterrence provided by our conventional forces and our nuclear umbrella,” O’Shaughnessy said in a statement.

“As demonstrated by today’s mission, the combined U.S. and Republic of Korea air forces work and train together closely every day, and we are prepared to meet any threat to our alliance, or the great nation of the Republic of Korea,” he added.

Extended deterrence refers to Washington’s stated commitment to deterring military threats to its key Asian ally of the South, including those from the North’s nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
