A NEW RESEARCH CLAIMS THAT THINKING OF EXERCISING HAS THE SAME EFFECT AS BEING IN THE GYM

A new research study suggests that just thinking of exercising can have the same effects as actually hitting the gym, officials say.

A recent study published in the Journal of Neurophysiology found that simply imagining exercise can tone muscle, delay atrophy, and even make your muscles stronger.

Researchers at Ohio University, according to the Breitbart News Network, conducted an experiment using two sets of 'healthy individuals.'

The researchers wrapped the wrists of one of the sets in a cast and gave them instructions to sit still for 11 minutes, five days a week, for four weeks, and 'perform mental imagery of strong muscle contractions,' -- or, imagine exercising.

The other set were not given any instruction.

The results illustrated that the body and mind are more intertwined than we though.

At the end of the four weeks, the participants who engaged in the 'mental exercise' were twice as strong as those who didn't, Breitbart reports.

For as often as Democrats attack the conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch for their heavy spending on politics, it's actually the liberal-minded who shelled out the most cash in the just completed midterm elections.

At least, that is, among those groups that must disclose what they raise and spend.

Among the top 100 individual donors to political groups, more than half gave primarily to Democrats or their allies. Among groups that funneled more than $100,000 to allies, the top of the list tilted overwhelmingly toward Democrats — a group favoring the GOP doesn't appear on the list until No. 14.

The two biggest super PACs of 2014? Senate Majority PAC and House Majority PAC — both backing Democrats.

In all, the top 10 individual donors to outside groups injected almost $128 million into this year's elections. Democratic-leaning groups collected $91 million of it.

AS THE FED ADJUSTS EVERY QUARTER THE GDP–IT SEEMS THE 5% GROWTH WAS NOTHING MORE THAN OBAMASCARE FORCING PEOPLE TO SPEND ON EXPENSIVE HEALTHCARE INSURANCE IN Q3 2014 TO THE TUNE OF 70% OF THE GDP TO JUMP UP TO 5% FOR THE QUARTER–ANOTHER NATURAL BORN LIE TO THE MASSES THAT THE ECONOMY IS DOING WELL FROM THE LIBERAL RUN MSM AND DEMS IN POWER–FORCING AMERICANS TO BUY SERVICES ON AVERAGE HIGHER THAT WHAT IT WOULD HAVE COST BEFORE OBAMASCARE–AND THE INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE LUAGHING IT AL UP STRAIGHT TO THE BANK

On Dec. 23, the Bureau of Economic Affairs (BEA) issued their revised GDP numbers for the 3rd quarter of 2014. And while the overall aggregate of consumer spending was down for most of the reporting period, one revision in particular helped skyrocket GDP to a massive 5% increase, and the most for a single quarter in a decade.

The revision which helped create last quarters incredible growth was the forced mandatory costs incurred by the American people from the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which accounted for two-thirds of the entire boost in consumer spending. Consumer spending, as opposed to the recording of revenues from actual production and industry which used to be the primary components of economic growth in America, on average accounts for more than 70% of the entire Gross Domestic Product. And if you took out payments made by the American people towards mandatory government healthcare, GDP may have been in negative growth for last quarter, just as an Obamacare revision changed the first quarter's number from a negative to plus 4%.

.

Over the past six months, government Public Service Announcement's (PSA's) and media pundits have been pushing Americans to sign up and purchase Obamacare before the end of the year deadline. Using a myriad of messages, such as telling citizens they will be stuck paying massive fines for not registering for nationalized healthcare, many Americans used large portions of their discretionary spending and savings to pay for services and insurance that on average is much higher than what they paid for prior to Obamacare's passage in Congress.

LG AND KDDI SMARTPHONE TO HAVE AN OS FROM MOZILLA FIREFOX–BYPASSING GOOGLE ANDROID

LG Electronics teamed up with KDDI of Japan to promote its brand new smartphone that runs on the Firefox operating system.
While the Japanese market is difficult to penetrate for foreign handset manufacturers due to high quality standards required by Japanese consumers, LG Electronics plans to target the low-end mobile segment, there, as the Firefox platform is customized for budget models.

The LG Fx0 has a 4.7-inch screen with LG Display supplying the panel. It comes with a transparent shell, run by Mozilla's web-centric mobile OS.
Designed by Tokujin Yoshioka, who previously worked on LG G3's design, the phone's body shows the internal components of the handset.
For a device that is designed for a developer-centric audience, the design approach does seem rather appealing.

Priced at 50,000 yen, the Fx0 will have limited availability starting Thursday, and will be available widely from Jan. 6 onwards.
The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU. It also has 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of build-in storage space. The rear camera is 8 megapixel (MP) and the front 2.1 MP.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2014–US RECOVERY GAINING CONFIDENCE WITH A 5% GDP AND THE DOW REACHING 18,000 AND OIL PRICE ITS LOWEST IN YEARS–LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

The U.S. economy is gaining confidence, with diverse indices indicating a recovery. A bullish U.S. economy used to pull Korea's growth rate up immediately, but economists say it is not that simple these days as the weak yen is expected to hurt Korea's exporters.

The U.S. posted 5 percent GDP growth in the third quarter, the quickest pace in 11 years.

The country is recovering in private consumption and corporate investment.
Real personal consumption, which makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy, increased 3.2 percent, and business investment 8.9 percent.
The benchmark Dow Jones index passed 18,000 for the first time.
A U.S. recovery, of course, is never bad for Korea.

……Manney shot Hamilton, 31, after responding to a call for a welfare check on a man sleeping in a downtown park. Manney said Hamilton resisted when he tried to frisk him. The two exchanged punches before Hamilton got hold of Manney’s baton and hit him on the neck, the former officer has said. Manney opened fire, hitting Hamilton 14 times.
Several witnesses told police they saw Hamilton holding Manney’s baton “in an aggressive posture” before Manney shot him, according to Chisholm’s report. Police said they have no video of the event.
Chisholm consulted with experts on the use of force by police officers, who concluded Manney’s conduct was justified. Emanuel Kapelsohn of the Peregrine Corp. said all the shots were fired in 3 or 4 seconds and there was no evidence that Manney continued firing after Hamilton hit the ground.
Manney suffered minor injuries, including a bite to his right thumb, a neck strain and a neck contusion, the report said. He was treated for post-concussion syndromes, a mild traumatic brain injury and had physical therapy for bicep and rotator cuff injuries, the report said.
Flynn fired Manney in October. He said at the time that Manney correctly identified Hamilton as mentally ill, but ignored department policy and treated him as a criminal by frisking him.
The Milwaukee Police Association condemned Manney’s firing as a political move, and members voted no confidence in Flynn soon after the firing, which Manney has appealed. On Monday, the union praised Chisholm’s decision, saying the officer had “no other option” in the situation.
Hamilton’s death preceded the killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, but the case hasn’t attracted as much attention as those fatal encounters with police. Hamilton’s family has led mainly peaceful protests in the months since he was shot.

PASTOR MATT CHANDLER CHALLENGES AND SPEAKS UP TO THE MAJORITY ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS WITH WHITE PRIVILIGES–MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT

Pastor Matt Chandler of the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas, isn’t shy to say what he thinks about one of the more contentious issues of our time. According to him, white privilege exists and Caucasians have a hard time recognizing it.

Chandler has taken some heat in recent months after publicly embracing and touting the existence of white privilege — the notion that the majority culture has certain benefits that are unavailable to minorities.

Matt Chandler (Image source: The Village Church)

Here’s what he had to say about the theory in a blog post last August:

The challenge with white privilege is that most white people cannot see it. We assume that the experiences and opportunities afforded to us are the same afforded to others. Sadly, this simply isn’t true. Privileged people can fall into the trap of universalizing experiences and laying them across other people’s experiences as an interpretive lens. For instance, a privileged person may not understand why anyone would mistrust a public servant simply because they have never had a viable reason to mistrust a public servant. The list goes on.

The pastor — whose five campuses stretched out across the Dallas-Ft. Worth area include 10,000 members — believes some people might not understand exactly where he’s coming from on these issues, which has led to some contention.

“I’ve taken some shots from people who I think don’t understand what I’m talking about … we’re a more diverse church now,” he said.

UP TO $1.6 TRILLION SPENT TO STOP TERRORISTS THUS FAR THIS 2014 SINCE 911–A SMALL BUCKET WHEN COMPARED TO $8 TRILLION THE POTUS BHO HAS RUN UP ON THE DEFICIT SINCE 2009

The United States has spent $1.6 trillion on military operations and counterterrorism, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to a newly released report by the Congressional Research Service.

“Based on funding enacted from the 9/11 attacks through [fiscal year 2014], CRS estimates a total of $1.6 trillion has been provided to the Department of Defense, the State Department and the Department of Veterans Administration for war operations, diplomatic operations and foreign aid, and medical care for Iraq and Afghan war veterans over the past 13 years of war,” the report, dated Dec. 8, states.

Of the $1.6 trillion total, $815 billion was spent on warfare in Iraq and $686 billion was spent in Afghanistan.

Another $81 billion went toward other “war-designated” funding, and $27 billion was spent on Operation Nobel Eagle, which conducts air patrols over the U.S.

The price tag includes all operations through the end of fiscal 2014, which ended in September.

TIS THE SEASON FOR LARGE TAKEOVERS IN 2014 WITH HISTORICAL BORROWING LOW INTEREST RATES–PHARMACEUTICALS, TECHNOLOGY, AND MEDIA DRIVES UP ACQUISITIONS

Corporate takeover deals surged to their highest levels since the financial crisis this year, with merger and acquisition volumes rising 47 per cent to $3.34tn globally.

In the busiest period since 2007, megadeals returned with a vengeance, as historically low borrowing rates, buoyant capital markets and inflated share prices prompted big transactions with the potential to remake industries — particularly in pharmaceuticals, technology and media.

The thirst for deals is expected to pour into the new year, led by the US and UK, where growth prospects are rosier than in other developed economies.

Wilhelm Schulz, head of M&A at Citigroup for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “A clear theme of this year has been the need for large European companies to make acquisitions outside their main markets. That outbound M&A is likely to persist in 2015.”

But by number of deals, Thomson Reuters data show that M&A activity climbed just 5 per cent from a year ago, meaning that midsized and small companies have yet to join in.

Henrik Aslaksen, global head of M&A at Deutsche Bank, said: “The large deals are masking subdued growth in M&A activity. The rate of growth of deal activity in the US is likely to normalise next year following a very strong 2014. However, we could see Emea activity pick-up from a comparatively low base.”

Three deals this year, including Comcast’s $71bn acquisition of Time Warner Cable and AT&T’s $67.2bn takeover of DirecTV, ranked among the 10 largest of the past decade if debt on the target company’s balance sheet is added.

THE PLUS SIDE OF THE NEW US CUBA RELATIONS–OIL EXPLORATION OFF THE TERRITORY COAST OF CUBA TO BE EXPANDED

One of the most prolific oil and gas basins on the planet sits just off Cuba's northwest coast, and the thaw in relations with the United States is giving rise to hopes that Cuba can now get in on the action.

It's a prospect welcomed by Cubans desperate for economic growth yet deeply concerning for environmentalists and the tourism industry in the region.

But a Cuban oil boom is unlikely anytime soon even if restrictions on U.S. businesses are relaxed because of low oil prices and far better drilling opportunities elsewhere.

"(Cuba) is not going to be the place where operators come rolling in," says Bob Fryklund, chief strategist for oil and gas exploration and production at the analysis firm IHS.

Although Cuba's oil and gas industry has long been open to foreign investment, the U.S. embargo has denied it some of the world's best deep-water drilling technology and expertise. As a result, Cuba produces just 55,000 barrels of oil per day.

About one-third of that is produced by a Canadian firm called Sherritt International.

Cuba needs 155,000 barrels per day, and it fills the gap with oil from Venezuela, part of a trade agreement established under former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. By comparison, a single large oil platform in the deep water U.S. Gulf of Mexico can produce 200,000 barrels per day.

The few major exploration projects in Cuba in recent years have had little success. Most recently, the Spanish company Repsol abandoned a yearslong exploration project in 2012 when an offshore exploratory well failed to find much oil.

Fryklund says that U.S. oil services firms, which have been prevented from working in Cuba, could provide technology to operators in Cuba to help increase production somewhat. Also, U.S. refiners could find a new market in Cuba for gasoline and diesel or refining technology. Cuba has been struggling to find a partner to finance an upgrade an expansion of its largest refinery, in Cienfuegos.

HEALTHY EATING COULD PROTECT YOU FROM DEMENTIA

More than 80,000 people a year could be saved from dementia by lifestyle changes to protect the brain, according to a major global report.

The research says individuals should be encouraged to take action earlier in life to try to fend off conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, amid increasing evidence that deterioration of the brain starts in the 40s.

The findings will be presented at the World Innovation Summit for Health in Doha in February.

Its chairman, surgeon and former Labour health minister Lord Darzi, urged the public to act now to change their diet and exercise habits and to stimulate their mental capacity through puzzles in order to prevent a "tide of suffering" which could otherwise overwhelm the nation.

Writing for The Telegraph, Lord Darzi, said individuals should adopt a "use it or lose it" attitude to their brains as a working group prepares to publish a study which suggests 3 million cases of dementia could be avoided in Britain by 2040 by lifestyle changes.

There's little to break the monotony of communist-era apartment blocks stretching across Marzahn-Hellersdorf, an east Berlin satellite district that has gained national notoriety for a spate of anti-foreigner protests.

Week after week, hundreds of residents here have angrily rallied against plans for a new centre to house refugees seeking asylum on a stretch of parkland now ringed by cyclone fence and watched by security guards.

As Germany confronts a rise in far-right populism, with "anti-Islamisation" marches drawing thousands in the eastern city of Dresden, this bland corner of the sprawling capital, a district home to almost 300,000 people, has become another flashpoint of resentment and xenophobia.

"I have nothing against foreigners, I've been around them all my life," said Fritz Siebke, 91, enjoying a Christmas season banquet of meat rolls, potato dumplings and gravy with fellow German pensioners at a district community centre.

"But since we've accepted refugees into Marzahn-Hellersdorf, things have changed in the neighbourhood. My gardening tools were stolen from right outside my house. In the past, that wouldn't have happened."

Christa Timm -- a fellow retiree who has lived here "for half a century," since the days when a Marxist-Leninist regime was in charge -- grumbled that "it would have been good if the authorities had informed us properly."

At first glance little has changed in Marzahn since the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago -- the few splashes of colour amid the prefab walls of 1970s-era architecture are mostly discount supermarkets and the yellow trams leading to the city.

With one in five residents unemployed and the area suffering neglect, the drab district is a world away from Berlin's more cosmopolitan and diverse centre -- and, analysts say, fertile ground for the far-right protests.

"Just look at the decay of our roads, our schools," argued Manfred Rouhs, head of the far-right "Pro Deutschland" (For Germany) party, which has helped organise protests venting anger at the entire political class, as well as the mainstream media.

"It's normal that people demand their problems be addressed before they host economic refugees," he told AFP in his office, seated before a black-red-gold German flag and a poster calling for "more education and less immigration".

GO ON A FIELD TRIP OUTING IF YOU’RE A 13 OR 14 YEAR OLD GIRL TO VISIT MUSEUMS AND RETURN PREGNANT–THIS IS THE CASE WITH 7 BOSNIAN CHILDREN AS PARENTS ARE OUTRAGE THAT THEIR CHILD WOULD BEHAVE THAT WAY

Seven girls aged between 13 and 14 have fallen pregnant after going on a school trip in Bosnia.

Furious parents are demanding to know why there was such a lack of teacher supervision when the girls, from the town of Banja Luka, returned from a five-day trip to the capital city.

The school had taken 28 girls on the educational outing to Sarajevo to visit museums and other historical sites, but since returning the girls have now reportedly dropped out of lessons…….

'It is obvious that children do not have enough knowledge of health education so they engage in such activities, not knowing the consequences.

'We have to be more direct in the educational system, it must not be allowed that street teaches children about intimate matters, and that they are later slapped by life.'

TEN FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT COMMUNIST NORTH KOREA–ALL NOT GOOD

Here are some surprising facts about North Korea from AskMen.com.

10. Voting ballots have only one option

And you guessed it — that one option is for the leader. That’s a sham of an election if we ever heard one.

9. North Koreans born after the Korean War are about 2 inches (five centimetres) shorter than South Koreans

North Korean war veterans. Source: AP

This height difference is attributed to the fact that six million North Koreans are in need of food, and one-third of children are chronically malnourished.

8. Kim Jong-il kidnapped a film director

Kim Jong-il, the father of current leader Kim Jong-un, kidnapped film director Shin Sang-OK and his wife and forced him to create acclaimed North Korean films. Among the films created was North Korea’s own version of Godzilla, called Pulgasari. Shin Sang-OK and his wife escaped years later.

7. North Korea built a fake village to get South Koreans to come in

The village of Kijong-dong, North Korea. Source: News Corp Australia

In the 1950s after the Korean War, North Korea built Kijong-Dong (Peace Village), a city visible from the border, to encourage South Koreans in. It’s actually a ghost city.

6. The year is 102

It’s not 2014 in North Korea. The year is 102, counted after the birth of Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-un’s grandfather.

5. There are 28 state-approved haircuts

There are limits to how long your hair can be. Source: News Limited

Men can’t grow their hair longer than five inches (12.7cm). Older men can go up to three inches (7.6cm). Women can choose one of 14 styles, depending on whether they are married or not.

4. Marijuana is legal and not even classified as a drug ...

... But distributing pornography, owning bibles and watching South Korean movies are punishable by death. In fact, 80 people across several cities were reportedly killed in November in a public execution for the latter two offences.

3. Wearing jeans is illegal

Leave the jeans at home if travelling to North Korea. Source: Supplied

Like your casual wear? Not in North Korea you don’t. Denim symbolises the enemy — the United States.

2. Kim Jong-il spent $1.3m on Hennessy per year

That’s 800 times the average North Korean’s annual income (estimated to be between $1200 and $2500). The current leader’s father liked his cognac.

1. North Korea claims a 100 per cent literacy rate

Considering half of the population lives in extreme poverty, and according to a recent UN report, two-thirds of the population do not know where their next meal will come from, we’re prone to think this may be inaccurate.

SOMETIMES YOU JUST DON’T WANT TO TOUCH THIS–AS A MARINE JOSEPH PEMBERTON IS ACCUSED OF KILLING A TRANSGENDER FILIPINO JENNIFER LAUDE IN A PHILIPPINE MOTEL

The evening for the young US Marine and his Filipino date "Jennifer" began at the Ambyanz Disco Bar in Subic Bay,Olongapo and ended shortly before midnight at the Celzone Lodge where "Jennifer's" lifeless body was found leaning against the toilet  bowl. Jennifer, it turns out was actually not originally a "she" but a "he." A Filipino transgender, Jeffrey Laude, 26, began calling himself "Jennifer" after medical procedures made him look more female than male.

http://www.philnews.com/2014/35a.htm

The United States and Philippine governments share the blame for the tragedy. Two young lives needlessly destroyed: the first, a young Filipino transgender found strangled inside a motel bathroom; the second a teenaged American serviceman now accused of murder.

What took place that fateful evening of October 11th—when Jeffrey Laude, 26, a transgender who went by the name "Jennifer," and his companion United States Marine Private 1st Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, 19, checked into the Celzone Lodge in Olongapo City—are still under investigation. What we know is that the couple checked-in at 10:30 pm, Pemberton left the motel approximately an hour later, and Laude's lifeless body was found on the bathroom floor shortly before midnight.

PACIFIC BLUE FIN TUNA WILL BE A RARE SPECIES IF NOT ALREADY FROM OVER FISHING

Officials from a conservation group have added the Pacific bluefin tuna to the list of species at risk of extinction. NHK WORLD's Yoshitaka Hirauchi reports.

Officials with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature released their latest "red list" of threatened species. They say the population of Bluefin Tuna in the Pacific is declining and is facing higher risks.

Wildlife experts made up the list by dividing animals and plants into eight categories. And they've moved the Pacific Bluefin Tuna up by two notches from "least concern" to "vulnerable."

The authors of the report say the species is extensively targeted by the fishing industry for the sushi and sashimi markets predominately in Asia.

A border agent in southeastern California said the issues with agent pay has to do with overtime polices.  “We’re getting scrutinized like crazy for anything over eight hours,” he said.

The agent, whom WND agreed not to identify due to the possibility of retribution against him, said the frustration level was causing many agents in his unit, which includes about 200 officers, to look for work elsewhere.

Congress passed a reform law that will change the way Border Patrol agents are paid starting next year, leading to a pay cut for most agents under the new system.

“Most of us are pretty happy with the current system but the supervisors are not supposed to micromanage our overtime,” the agent told WND. “We’re getting contradictory messages from our supervisors.”

On the one hand agents are told they should not leave the field at the end of their shift if doing so would cause “a dereliction of duty.” On the other hand, when an agent provides an overtime justification citing a duty that had to be performed before he could leave for the day, the justification is more often than not denied, the agent said.

DEC 21ST WINTER SOLTICE DAY FROM THE YEAR 2005 TO 2014 TIMED EXPOSURE OF SUNRISE TO SUNSET

Explanation: Today the solstice occurs at 23:03 Universal Time, the Sun reaching its southernmost declination in planet Earth's sky. Of course, the December solstice marks the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the south. When viewed from northern latitudes, and as shown in the above horizontally compressed image, the Sun will make its lowest arc through the sky along the southern horizon. So in the north, the solstice day has the shortest length of time between sunrise and sunset and fewest hours of daylight.

This striking composite image follows the Sun's path through the December solstice day of 2005 in a beautiful blue sky, looking down the Tyrrhenian Sea coast from Santa Severa toward Fiumicino, Italy. The view covers about 115 degrees in 43 separate, well-planned exposures from sunrise to sunset.

THEY JUST CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH AND TRADITION IN THE THE USA IN THIS LOCAL BOSTON TOWN–AS A CHRISTMAS SIGN GETS REMOVED–JUST LIKE HOW ITS BEING DONE IN THE COMMUNIST COUNTRY OF NORTH KOREA AND ALL OF THE MIDDLE EAST–PURGING AWAY ALL THAT STANDS FOR GOOD

image

Maybe it started when the Marshfield School Committee changed the name of the Christmas Break to the Holiday Break. Now, there seems to be a backlash in town.

“It’s a Christmas holiday, it’s a national holiday, not some random holiday,” said one man at the post office today.

Over the weekend, several DPW workers put an electronic sign on a friend’s property, right on the main road through the town. And the message? Merry Christmas.

“We work for the town, and we just wanted everyone to be in the Christmas spirit and there are few decorations,” said Steve Barber, a DPW worker.

But apparently, someone complained and sure enough, there are by-laws governing electronic signs. “We don’t object to the message,” said Building Commissioner Gerald O’Neill, “but the sign has to conform to size regulations, among other factors.”

So the sign had to go. But one DPW worker said next year, they’re going to put a large banner across Rt. 139. “There are fewer regulations about banners”, he said.

WHY (이유) WHY (이유) IS THE DEMOCRATIC FORM OF GOVERNMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES AND INDIA LAGS THE ECONOMIC POWER FROM THE OTHER ASIAN TIGER COUNTRIES–TOO MANY TO PIN POINT IT SEEMS–YET THE UNDERLYING THEME IS NO UNIFYING STRATEGY TO TACKLE THE ENORMOUS ENGINE FROM LANGUAGE TO A POLITICAL PARTY–INSTABILITY THE GREATEST QUESTION–CONSIDER US FORCES KICKED OUT BY THE LIBERAL RULING PARTY FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE BRITISH FROM INDIA–WHAT IS NEEDED IS THE KOREAN SAEMAUL UNDONG (새마을 운동)

Their extreme factionalism makes political power hard to harness in the national interest

Two improbable democracies

Insights into India by the Yale political science professor emeritus Robert A. Dahl deserve our consideration, since they apply to our own “improbable democracy.”

Dahl seeks to explain why India continues to be a democracy, though it lacks many of the conditions Dahl himself regards as necessary for such a political system to thrive.

India’s horrendous poverty alone—despite its economy’s current surge—makes it a wonder how the country maintains its basic democratic institutions.

Yet India manages—just as the Philippines does. And the reason seems to be that if the extreme factionalism of society makes political power so difficult to consolidate in the national interest, it also means that no power holder can hope to easily overpower the others and rule arbitrarily.

Least common denominator

Dahl notes that the one billion Indians are “divided among themselves along more lines than any other country.” These divisions start from region, class and caste, and extend to language, race and religion. Within each category, there are infinite subdivisions.
In the Philippines, too, geography, culture and history have combined to make the sense of nationality hard to instil.

In both countries, political power is so divided that rule by consensus can strive only for the least common denominator of agreement among the factions.

In 2008, the Indian parliament (545 seats) had 24 party coalitions. Its 2009 elections were contested by more than 300 parties.

KOREAN SAEMAUL UNDONG (새마을 운동)

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO CHINA WITH MACAU AND HONG KONG–THE ONCE WESTERN DEMOCRACY RULED IS NOW NOTHING MORE THAN A PUPPET OF THE MAINLAND–AS ELECTIONS MEANT FOR THE PEOPLE TO DECIDE IS NOW PRESELECTED TO PLEASE XI OF BEIJING OF ITS RULING OFFICIALS–THE ONLY MEANS FOR COMMUNIST TO CONTROL THE TWO COUNTRIES BY STACKING THE POLITICAL RULING IN ITS FAVOR–SIMILAR TO HOW THE DEMOCRATS ARE STACKING IGNORANT VOTERS INTO ITS FIELD OF VIEW THROUGH ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IT SEEMS

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday urged the semiautonomous former Portuguese colony of Macau to guard against interference by what he called hostile external forces, following the prolonged pro-democracy protests in nearby Hong Kong.
Beijing had accused foreign forces of fostering the pro-democracy Occupy Central movement in Hong Kong, where protesters demanded a right to nominate candidates for the territory’s next leader. The 79-day demonstration ended in mid-December with both Beijing and Hong Kong’s leaders refusing to bow to the protesters’ demands.
Xi was visiting Macau, a major gambling center, to mark the 15th anniversary of its return to Beijing and to host the swearing-in ceremony of Macau’s newest chief, Chui Sai On. Chui was the only nominee for the position and was elected by a 400-person panel believed to be pro-Beijing.
Both Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions where Beijing allows greater autonomy under a “one country, two systems” arrangement. However, Beijing does not want to the more liberal regions to become hotbeds of democracy movements that may threaten the ruling Communist Party’s grip on power.

In a message apparently aimed at Hong Kong, Xi said Macau has properly obeyed the “one country, two systems” policy and the Basic Law governing the special administrative region.
