IT’S safe to say that Apple’s iPhone owes much of its success to the App Store and what developers are doing with third-party apps. Imagine an iPhone without Instagram, Candy Crush and even Google Maps.

As it stands right now, there are over 1.3 million apps on the iOS App Store, with those apps downloaded over 7.5 billion times. The most downloaded of all these apps is, of course, Angry Birds with over 2 billion downloads alone. Oh, and Apple reported over $500 million worth of sales in the App Store in the first week of 2015. Not bad.

Australia has been a big contributor, with dozens of Aussie-made apps topping the charts across the world since the App Store’s inception in 2008. One of these is the most downloaded of all time, the game Fruit Ninja. Developed by Halfbrick Studios in Brisbane, by 2014 it had been downloaded over 500 million times.

Jews were the target of harassment in more countries across the globe in 2013 than at any time in past seven years, a study released Friday showed, with hostility towards the religious group higher in Europe than any other world region.

The report by the US-based Pew Research Center combined the results of two separate indexes – one measuring government actions that curb religious beliefs and practices and another measuring acts of social religious hostility by private individuals or organisations.

It found that harassment and hostility against Jews, either by the government or members of the public, were recorded in 77 of 198 countries surveyed in 2013, up from 71 in 2012 and the highest number since Pew first began recording figures in 2007.

It was in Europe, however, that levels of social harassment were most alarming. The study found that Jews faced this type of harassment in 34 of the continent’s 45 countries (76 percent) – a higher share than in any other region and against a global average of 25 percent.

“In France, three men attacked a teenager who was wearing a kippah in Vitry-Sur-Seine in March, threatening, ‘We will kill all of you Jews’,” said the report. “In Spain, vandals painted a large swastika on the walls of a bull ring in the city of Pinto in August, along with the words “Hitler was right.”

“And in Norway, the newspaper Dagbladet published a controversial cartoon in May that appeared to be mocking the practice of circumcision.”

The report comes at a time when fears over growing anti-Semitism are causing concerns across Europe.

France in particular has faced a worrying rise in anti-Jewish acts in recent months, with a deadly January 9 attack on a Paris kosher supermarket, just days after Islamic extremists shot dead 12 people at the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, further fuelling religious tensions.

A rise in anti-Semitism as been cited as one of the reasons for 7,000 Jews leaving France for Israel in 2014, according to Israeli government figures, twice as many as in the previous year.

Discussions over the deployment of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea are drifting into the Twilight Zone. The knee-jerk reaction of the government here is to deny that Washington has made any request to deploy them, which is patently untrue. Recent comments by a U.S. Defense Department spokesman that Washington and Seoul are continuing negotiations over the deployment of THAAD batteries have triggered both suspicion and confusion.

Meanwhile Beijing is pressuring Seoul to reject Washington's requests, since the U.S. missile defense program of which the THAAD batteries form the centerpiece is transparently aimed at keeping China in check. Beijing warns that their deployment here would have a "catastrophic impact" on bilateral relations.
Not to be outdone, opposition lawmakers and leftwing activists here are rallying behind China in opposing the deployment.

But China's claims have no scientific or technological basis with regard to their deployment in Korea. THAAD batteries target missiles flying 40 to 150 km above ground. Unless Chinese missiles are aimed directly at South Korea, they would fly over the Korean Peninsula at a much higher altitude. That means the THAAD batteries deployed here could not be used to target Chinese missiles.
Critics have claimed that the X-Band radar system that accompanies THAAD batteries have a range of 2,000 km and could be used to monitor Chinese military activities. But the U.S. says these powerful early-warning radars will only be deployed in Japan, while the ones set up in South Korea will be Terminal Mode X-Band radars with a maximum range of just 600 km. That is even shorter than the radars aboard the Navy's Aegis destroyers, which is 1,000 km.
China should check its facts before bullying South Korea.

In the Lahore Children’s Hospital, a seven-year-old girl from Sargodha who was raped lies in critical condition. According to the doctors, the injuries sustained by the child on the lower part of her body are so severe that they have become infected.

The infection, called septicemia, or sepsis, has spread through her body, and may not prove responsive to antibiotics. And so, another child of Pakistan lies at death’s door in a society that knows no accountability, particularly for its weakest members.
There was a time, not too long ago, when the rape of children was deemed deserving of some outrage, even if it was of the usual perfunctory Pakistani sort.
Last year, when a little girl was kidnapped from outside her house, raped and then left near a hospital, many had raised their voices against the grotesque nature of the crime. Since then, it seems, this evil too has become absorbed in the fabric of apathy that allows Pakistanis to witness and then ignore what to a normal society would be the cause of deep disturbance and alarm.

A number of child rapes have been reported in just the past couple of months. Early last month, the body of a six-year-old boy was found in a mosque.
According to reports, the little boy had been raped repeatedly before his body was abandoned. A man who had come to the mosque to pray said that he had seen the boy’s body and told the mosque administration about it.
Among the people who are being investigated is the mosque’s chief cleric. The same month, a seven-year-old girl was found raped and stoned to death, according to news reports. Similarly, in November last year, a five-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in the Islampura area of Lahore. This incident is said to have taken place inside a school.

A married 25-year-old has spoken of her horror after her life was stolen by a mystery woman in a bid to attract unsuspecting men.

Ruth Palmer found that nearly 1,000 of her images and real details about her life had been used to set up a host of Twitter and Instagram accounts. 

The 25-year-old discovered the 'catfish' -  an Internet scammer who fabricates online identities and entire social circles to trick people into romantic relationships - had been using her details for three years.

Using the fake name Leah Palmer she duped two men into believing they were in a relationship with the brunette.  

The imposter even set up fake accounts for her mother and friends to make the social media profiles appear more realistic. 

When Mrs Palmer complained to the social networks, they shut down the accounts.

But just days later, more false profiles  were set up.

Mrs Palmer, who is married and from Brighton, East Sussex, now fears the perpetrator has become 'obsessed' with her life.

'It is horrible and I just can't understand what must be going through this person's head to do this,' she said.

'It has been horrific for me, my family, friends and husband.

'I am now fearful of whoever this is as they are seemingly not able to stop this and nothing seems to deter them.

A weird rock has been found on Mars, raising speculation of what it might be.
"Here we have an ancient carving of a face that looks similar to a horse or dragon head," Scott Waring of the UFO Sightings Daily blog said. "The detail is still high even though it's been beaten by the sun and dust storms that ravage Mars over millions of years."
The blog also posted some photos of the rock.
The skull is reportedly about 40 centimeters long, with teeth and even lips still intact.

A prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger known for speaking out against religious extremism was hacked to death as he walked through Bangladesh's capital with his wife, police said Friday.

The attack Thursday night on Avijit Roy, a Bangladesh-born U.S. citizen, occurred on a crowded sidewalk as he and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University. Ahmed, who is also a blogger, was seriously injured. It was the latest in a series of attacks on secular writers in Bangladesh in recent years.

A previously unknown militant group, Ansar Bangla 7, claimed responsibility for the attack, Assistant Police Commissioner S.M. Shibly Noman told the Prothom Alo newspaper.

Roy "was the target because of his crime against Islam," the group said on Twitter.

Roy was a prominent voice against religious intolerance, and his family and friends say he had been threatened for his writings.

About 8:45 p.m. Thursday, a group of men ambushed the couple as they walked toward a roadside tea stall, with at least two of the attackers hitting them with meat cleavers, police Chief Sirajul Islam said. The attackers then ran away, disappearing into the crowds.

Two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack, he said.

Islamic extremism has made few inroads in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 160 million people, but there have been a series of similar attacks in recent years blamed on militants.

A divide has become increasingly visible between secular bloggers and conservative Islamic groups, often covertly connected with Islamist parties, with the secularists urging authorities to ban religion-based politics while the Islamists press for blasphemy laws to protect their faith.

Islam is Bangladesh's state religion but the country is governed by secular laws based on British common law, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly said she will not give in to religious extremism.

Sky News can also exclusively reveal details of Emwazi's academic achievements during his stint at the university in London's Cavendish campus, between 2006 and 2009.

According to the document, he passed all but two of the modules in his Information Systems with Business Management degree, for which he was awarded a lower second honours (2:2).

Putin ordered Russia's top law enforcement chiefs to personally oversee the probe of Nemtsov's killing.
``Putin noted that this cruel murder has all the makings of a contract hit and is extremely provocative,'' presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies.

Living organ to be 'printed'

So also with the first living organ to be soon created using a 3D-bioprinter.

Russian scientists say the printer will create a transplant-ready thyroid first and follow it up with a functional printed kidney scheduled for 2018.

The bioprinter will be using stem cells as an 'ink' to make the thyroid gland.

Stem cells obtained from fat tissues will be transformed into spheroids or an aggregation of cells, which will be layered as per the design onto hydrogel. The gel then dissolves, and the printed organ matures in a special bio reactor.

More dangerously is how 3D printing allows one to make a gun at home. US firm Defense Distributed has developed a milling machine which allows buyers to print and assemble a steel AR-15 rifle right at home. 

The 3D printers are not really new and have been used for some time now to create prototypes in manufacturing and research. It helps save money and time in actual prototyping of the product at the factory.

Companies have also been using 3D printers for short run custom manufacturing.

Nothing new

Largely meant for design visualisation, metal casting, geospatial mapping, palaeontology, forensic pathology, 3D printing has only now begun to catch popular imagination, thanks to cakes and cookies and lawn mowers made by a printer.

Computer-aided tissue engineering has been making organs and body parts using inkjet techniques, mostly for research.

Basically, 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional objects from a digital file.

The object is created by laying down thin successive layers of material until the entire object is created using inbuilt hardware.

The software slices the final model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. When uploaded in the 3D printer, the printer creates the object layer by layer.

One of the commonly used technology, selective laser sintering (SLS) uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass powders into a mass that has the desired three dimensional shape.

The spectacle kicked off in style shortly after 9am on Saturday as the tide on France’s western coast reached a coefficient of 117 on a scale of 120.

Thousands of people took advantage of the school winter break to converge on observation spots and witness the spectacularly high water levels.

Among the most popular draws were spots along the coast of Brittany and the world-famous Mont Saint-Michel, the Norman hillock that resumes its island form when tides come in.

Each year, police and fire brigades line the beaches beneath the Mont Saint-Michel to warn tourists about the hazard caused by high tides, with waters rising by a staggering 14 metres.

"It's quite simply fabulous," enthused one woman taking in the scene of surging ocean water with the mount’s 11th-century abbey looming overhead. "It's the Mont as it was in the beginning –- surrounded by water."

Saturday’s high tide was the first in nearly a month of remarkable water surges due to culminate on March 20 and 21 with tidal coefficients of 118 on 119 respectively.

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology on Monday unveiled an unmanned rover that can search for rare minerals and metals on the moon's surface.
The rover will be sent to the moon on a Korean-made rocket in 2020 to conduct a mission similar to NASA's Curiosity Mars rover.

The rover is 50 cm wide, 70 cm long and 25 cm high, and weighs 20 kg, much lighter than China's 120 kg Jade Rabbit rover sent to the moon in 2013.
It is much smaller and lighter due to the freight weight limit of the home-grown rocket that will carry the rover. Researchers say they developed a rover with a completely new design.

Rohrabacher has long been critical of the theory of man-made global warming. Lately, the California Republican has criticizing NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for allegedly tampering with temperature data to create an artificial warming trend. Such data is then used to justify regulations aimed at curbing fossil fuel use and other industrial activities.

Rohrabacher isn’t the only one to call for hearings on the science behind global warming. Oklahoma Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe has also promised to hold hearings on global warming data.

“We’re going to have a committee hearing on the science,” said Inhofe, who chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. “People are going to hear the other side of the story.”

For years, those skeptical of man-made global warming have argued that government agencies are altering raw temperature data to create a warming trend. Allegations of tampering have increased as satellite temperature readings show much less warming than land and ocean-based weather stations show.

Science blogger Steven Goddard (a pseudonym) has been a major critic of NASA’s and NOAA’s temperature measurements. Goddard points out that NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center makes the present look warmer by artificially cooling past temperatures to show a warming trend.
