Following Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud’s bombshell warning that the next target of the Islamic State, or ISIS, will be Europe first and America a month after that, one Middle East source is suggesting the Saudis may have paid ISIS extortion money not to attack the kingdom.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous but is close to officials in the governments of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, said that the Saudis years ago did the same thing when Prince al-Turki, then Saudi Arabia’s intelligence chief, traveled to Afghanistan to meet with al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.

In that meeting, Turki reportedly paid millions of dollars to bin Laden to refrain from attacking the Saudi kingdom, even though bin Laden had turned against the Saudi monarchy for hosting U.S. forces on Muslim soil to fight against then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

In expressing concern that such an event may be happening, the WND source pointed out there had been concern about a month ago that ISIS was preparing to attack the Saudi kingdom, with a number of ISIS fighters saying publicly the jihadist group would capture Mecca and Medina – two of the most holy Muslims cities in all Islam.

Until recently, ISIS forces were known to be approaching the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, with some cells having penetrated the kingdom before being captured.

In his most recent comments to new ambassadors to the Saudi Kingdom, however, Abdullah only warned that the West, including Europe and the U.S., would be the next targets unless there is “rapid” action.

“If we ignore them, I am sure they will reach Europe in a month and America in another month,” Abdullah was quoted as saying in the daily Asharq al-Awsat.

“Terrorism knows no border, and its danger could affect several countries outside the Middle East,” Abdullah told the new ambassadors.

The manager said AA will soon launch a route linking Incheon with another U.S. city, after Dallas, as part of its expansion plan in the Asia-Pacific region.
"Besides Dallas, we have eight more hub airports in the United States. We are working hard to start a new route between Incheon International Airport and one of our hub airports, but it is too early to say when it will happen. Senior managers at the headquarters are positive about the plan."

AA's eight hub airports are in Charlotte, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.
The U.S. carrier has been refitting its entire fleet, Park said, adding that when the process is completed, AA will operate a newer and larger aircraft on the Incheon-Dallas route.

"We will continue to upgrade our in-flight meals for Korean passengers and train cabin crews to offer more premium in-flight services," she said. "We also place top priority on ensuring aviation safety. Our pilots and flight attendants are well prepared to cope with any emergency situations. We are doing everything we can to ensure safe flights for all our customers."

American Airlines, founded in 1930, merged with U.S. Airways in December 2013, creating the world's largest airline. The lightning advance took place in an area tens of miles from territory previously held by the rebels, suggesting that the troops originated at least in part from the Russian side of the border.

Combined with a series of other defeats and the capture of Russian soldiers inside Ukraine on Tuesday, it increased speculation that – despite official denials – Russian regular forces have now entered the war alongside the separatists.

What would you think if you were told that no abortion facility in your home state held a current facility license as required by law, yet all of them continued to do abortions that were technically illegal – with full knowledge of state authorities?

That is not simply a hypothetical situation in Ohio. It is the scandalous reality.

Operation Rescue confirmed this week that out of eleven abortion facilities in that state, none hold current, active Ambulatory Surgical Facility licenses. While applications for licensure or license renewal have been made by all but one abortion facility, the Ohio Department of Health has not approved or denied their licensing applications. Some have been pending for over a year — one facility has been waiting since 2012 for licensing renewal — even though the law requires that ASF licenses be renewed annually.

Making this even more troubling is the fact that there has been no delay in the renewal of licenses for non-abortion facilities, leading to concerns that abortion facilities are being given too much leniency when they cannot comply with licensing laws.

Meanwhile, most of the abortion facilities continue to offer surgical abortions despite not meeting the requirements for legal operation in Ohio.

“Why are abortion facilities in Ohio allowed to operate with no valid facility license? If these abortion centers cannot meet the qualifications provided by law for licensing, then they should be immediately shut down,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “There’s really no excuse for allowing substandard abortion businesses to continue operating outside the law.”

Attorney Larry Klayman, fresh off a preliminary court ruling that the National Security Agency’s spying on Americans likely is unconstitutional, now has named President Obama and others in a racketeering complaint.

South Korea and the United States wrapped up their joint military exercise Thursday, a day earlier than scheduled, officials here said, spawning speculation that the move might be intended to help soothe North Korea.
The allies' Combined Forces Command in Seoul announced that it successfully completed its annual computer-assisted simulation drill, named Ulchi Freedom Guardian.

"This year's Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise further strengthened our combined defense and enhanced the readiness of the Republic of Korea and the United States Combined Forces and the United Nations sending states," Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, chief of the CFC, said in a press release. The U.S. general also leads the 28,500 American troops stationed on the peninsula.

The training, he added, was based on "realistic scenarios" and ensured the allies are fully prepared to defend South Korea in case of an emergency situation.
South Korea and the U.S. began UFG on Aug. 18, snubbing Pyongyang's fierce protest laden with war threats.

"We finished the UFG exercise today as evaluation showed its goal has been achieved," a CFC official said on condition of anonymity. "You can say that it came to an end a day ahead of schedule."
Some observers said the decision may be part of efforts to keep military tensions from soaring and to reach out to the North.

President Obama on Thursday said his administration has not yet developed a comprehensive strategy to counter Islamist militants operating inside Syria.

Addressing reporters at the White House, Obama vowed Congress would not be "left in the dark" as officials draft plans to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
"I don't want to put the cart before the horse. We don't have a strategy yet," Obama said.
Noting media reports suggesting the president was weighing expanding airstrikes into Syria, Obama said "folks are getting a little further ahead of where we're at than we currently are."
"We need to make sure that we've got clear plans, that we're developing them. At that point, I will consult with Congress and make sure that their voices are heard," Obama said.

The president has already authorized airstrikes against ISIS fighters operating in Iraq without congressional approval, and on Thursday defended that decision as being part of his duty as commander in chief. 

"That requires me to act fast based on information I receive if an embassy of ours or a consulate of ours is being threatened," Obama said.
But lawmakers — including prominent Democrats, including Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) — have asked the president to come to Congress to seek explicit congressional approval for an expanded military campaign.
"I am calling for the mission and objectives for this current significant military action against (ISIS) to be made clear to Congress, the American people, and our men and women in uniform," Kaine said in a statement. "And Congress should vote up or down on it.”
"I urge the administration to use the next two weeks to clearly define the strategy and objectives of its mission against (ISIS), then bring it to Congress for a debate and authorization vote," Kaine added.
Obama said the administration needed time to develop a "broader regional strategy" and bring in international partners to help stabilize Syria.
"We are gonna work politically and diplomatically with folks in the region," Obama said. "And we're gonna cobble together the kind of coalition that we need for a long-term strategy as soon as we are able to fit together the military, political and economic components of that strategy. There will be a military aspect to that. And it's gonna be important for Congress to know what that is, in part because it may cost some money."

On Tuesday, Burger King announced that it would spend some $11 billion to buy Tim Hortons Inc., a Canadian breakfast food chain, then merge Burger King into it, thereby turning what was once a major American company into a major Canadian one. As the Washington Post reports, Burger King would “move the company’s headquarters to Canada, where corporate taxes are significantly lower.”

This process, called inversion, has been occurring more and more often, despite the fascistic suggestion by President Obama that headquartering outside the United States represents a betrayal of God and country. Members of the Obama administration have taken to labeling business inversions a lack of “economic patriotism” – presumably under the assumption that to stay in America, cut jobs, and lose all profits in order to pay higher taxes represents a sort of higher moral value than moving one’s headquarters and continuing to pay millions of workers and reward consumers with better and cheaper products.

The Obama administration ought to note that the Soviets built a wall in the center of Berlin to keep their people and industries “economically patriotic.” Suggested measures to chain companies to the United States represent the same sort of government compulsion. And that sort of compulsion is a heavy club for a very slight increase in government revenue: an estimated $19 billion over 10 years.

Fleur Pellerin, a Korean orphan who was adopted by a French family when she was six months old, was appointed France's culture minister on Wednesday.

The United States on Friday demanded Russia "immediately" withdraw an aid convoy of vehicles from Ukraine and warned of further international sanctions if Moscow did not respect Kiev's sovereignty.

Russia sent dozens of aid trucks into rebel-held eastern Ukraine earlier on Friday without Kiev’s approval, saying its patience had worn out with the Ukrainian government’s stalling tactics.

"Russia must remove its vehicles and its personnel from the territory of Ukraine immediately. Failure to do so will result in additional costs and isolation," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters.

The United Nations Security Council was to hold emergency consultations on the convoy Friday at the request of Lithuania.

NATO's secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, called Russia's unilateral decision to send more than 130 trucks filled with what it called humanitarian aid into rebel-held areas “a blatant breach of Russia's international commitments'' and “a further violation of Ukraine's sovereignty by Russia.''

Rasmussen said in a statement that Friday's convoy to Luhansk could deepen a crisis “which Russia itself has created and has continued to fuel.''

Rasmussen said the action has coincided with “a major escalation in Russian military involvement in Eastern Ukraine since mid-August, including the use of Russian forces.” Rasmussen urged Moscow "to stop destabilizing Ukraine."

Two Russian TU-95MS bombers intruded into Korea's air defense identification zone over the East and South Seas during joint Korea-U.S. military exercises last week.
Two F-15K fighter jets were scrambled from an air base in Dageu on Aug. 21 when the two Russian bombers flew into the zone, a military spokesman said.

"We understand that they were flying on patrol," the spokesman added.
The air defense identification zone is not recognized by international treaties but set by individual nations as the boundary where foreign aircraft need to seek prior permission from the country that claims it.

In February, Russian aircraft also intruded into Korea's air defense zone during joint drills.

Last week, the Russian bombers also intruded into Japan's air defense zone. Two F-15J fighters of the Japanese Self-Defense Force were scrambled in response, a Japanese government spokesman said.

The TU-95MS has a range of 15,000 km and a maximum speed of 920 km/h and can carry nuclear weapons.

Democratic Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.) said President Obama must convince lawmakers that airstrikes in Syria are the “only alternative” available for defeating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria before expanding military operations. Libya

In an interview on CNN Tuesday, Reed said Obama “would have to make the case and make it compellingly that this represents the only alternative we have in the face of a very grave and serious threat.”

President Obama has authorized military strikes against the al Qaeda offshoot in Iraq and is weighing expanding those attacks to the group’s foothold in Syria.

Reed said Obama had made “the right step” in authorizing surveillance flights over Syria to assess the threat posed by ISIS. 

“Because without the facts, with the good analysis, I don’t think you could get that kind of automatic, instantaneous, reflexive support” in Congress, he said.

But Reed, who would lead the Armed Services Committee if Democrats hold on to the Senate next year, joined a growing chorus of lawmakers who say Obama needs congressional approval before military action in Syria. 

Reed said “sketchy” intelligence had been used to justify the war in Iraq.

“We can’t do that again,” he said.

The White House has refused to commit to seeking congressional authorization before airstrikes in Syria.

Tanks, artillery and infantry have crossed from Russia into an unbreached part of eastern Ukraine in recent days, attacking Ukrainian forces and causing panic and wholesale retreat not only in this small border town but also a wide section of territory, in what Ukrainian and Western military officials described on Wednesday as a stealth invasion.
The attacks outside this city and in an area to the north essentially have opened a new, third front in the war in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian separatists, along with the fighting outside the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Exhausted, filthy and dismayed, Ukrainian soldiers staggering out of Novoazovsk for safer territory said Tuesday they were cannon fodder for the forces coming from Russia. As they spoke, tank shells whistled in from the east and exploded nearby.
Some of the retreating Ukrainian soldiers appeared unwilling to fight. The commander of their unit, part of the Ninth Brigade from Vinnytsia, in western Ukraine, barked at the men to turn around, to no effect. "All right," the commander said. "Anybody who refuses to fight, sit apart from the others." Eleven men did, while the others returned to the city.
Some troops were in a full, chaotic retreat: a city-busload of them careened past on the highway headed west, purple curtains flapping through windows shot out by gunfire. A Ukrainian military spokesman said Wednesday the army still controlled Novoazvosk but that 13 soldiers had died in the fighting.
The behavior of the Ukrainian forces corroborated assertions by Western and Ukrainian officials that Russia, despite its strenuous denials, is orchestrating a new counteroffensive to help the besieged separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic, who have been reeling from aggressive Ukrainian military advances in recent weeks.

Awardees are chosen through a strict selection process and 16 institutions won the grant this year, including William Paterson University's project on Korea.
This project has been led by William the university's faculty comprised of three Korean professors _ Dr. An Hee-jung, an associate professor of educational technology, Dr. Hong Eun-young, an associate professor of literacy, and Dr. Park Keum-jae, an associate professor of sociology.

"Korea's history and culture have been often overshadowed by content on China and Japan in the U.S. middle and high school curriculum," Professor Hong told The Korea Times.
"Under these circumstances, we felt the need to develop curriculum materials on Korea and share them with other teachers and schools. This is why we designed our project," he said.
The group has been awarded the largest amount _ $85,000 (86.5 million won) _ among all 16 awardees, which suggests the U.S. government weighs importance of the project on Korea.

"Korean is identified as one of the critical languages across the U.S. In need of human capital who are able to understand Korean culture, the U.S. government might have given high marks to our project, I guess," Professor An said.
According to her, there are 13 languages listed as critical languages in the U.S. including Chinese, Japanese and Russian, as well as Korean.
With the huge funding, the three Korean professors have focused on exploring Korean history, culture and education system through experiential learning.
"What we cared most while selecting six participants was specificity of their lesson plans, because the ultimate goal of our project is to actually affect American students after returning to the U.S.," An added.

Coogan's detailed lesson plan about Korean history seemed to have made him focus on historical periods.

"We traveled across five cities _ Seoul, Gongju, Gwangju, Busan and Gyeongju _ to visit historical sites. For me, Gwangju was the most memorable city in that I became aware of its sad history in which a lot of sacrifices were made for democracy," said Coogan who will teach history at schools in the future.
In addition, participants attended seminars at the Korean Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, as well as the Korean Education and Research Information Service, to learn about the country's educational system…..

The 29-year-old project manager had been granted access to nuclear installations as part of his job throughout 2012 and 2013.

But in March 2014 the engineer, who cannot be named according to French law, had his pass to enter the Nogent-sur-Seine nuclear power station revoked without explanation.

The decision, made by the local administration, was covered by “Secret Defence” – which means the authorities are not required to publicly justify the decision.

“My client worked freely in French nuclear power stations for three years,” said his lawyer Sefen Guez Guez, who works with France’s Anti-Islamophobia Collective (CCIF), to FRANCE 24. “The question now is what changed? Overnight, he became a suspect person and no one has any idea why. That’s what we’re trying to get to the bottom of.”

As far as the lawyer is concerned, “considering the current atmosphere in France, his religious leanings cannot be ruled out” as a reason behind the ban.

In June 2014, Guez Guez successfully had the engineers ban revoked by an appeals court. The judge ruled that, “there were serious doubts over the legality of the decision”.

But when the engineer turned up for work in July, he found he was once again refused access – this time by EDF – to his place of work.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted Tuesday to end a moratorium on issuing plant licenses that it had imposed while it considered nuclear waste storage issues.

The commission also voted to adopt a new rule reiterating that spent fuel rods can be stored at closed nuclear plants for long periods of time, NRC said in a statement.

NRC had voted in 2012 to stop issuing new reactor licenses, license renewals and spent fuel licenses.

The vote followed a federal court decision ruling that NRC should consider the possibility that the federal government will never establish a permanent nuclear waste storage facility. The court said NRC should analyze the environmental impact of permanently storing spent fuel at closed plants, including the possibilities of spent fuel pool leaks and fires.

The analysis adopted Tuesday through a rule concluded that “spent fuel can be safely managed in ... dry casks during the short-term, long-term and indefinite time frames.” It reiterated NRC’s previous position on spent fuel storage.

Tuesday’s action did not itself approve any licenses.

On-site spent fuel storage has been extremely controversial among lawmakers and outside groups. Environmentalists and some Democrats in Congress have called for stricter rules to keep fuel rods safe.

The Nuclear Energy Institute commended NRC.

In 1982, Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act directing the Department of Energy to build and operate a repository for used nuclear fuel and other high-level radioactive waste. The act set a deadline of 1998 for the Energy Department to begin moving used fuel from nuclear energy facilities. 

To fund the federal program, the act established a Nuclear Waste Fund. Since 1983, electricity consumers have paid into the fund one-tenth of a cent for every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced at nuclear power plants. These fees continue to accumulate at a rate of $750 million a year, and the fund accrues more than $1 billion in interest each year. The fund’s balance, as of May 2013, is more than $29 billion. Without a high-level radioactive waste management program and annual congressional appropriations, these funds are not available for their intended purpose.

 

The Yucca Mountain Program

In 1987, Congress amended the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, directing the Energy Department to exclusively study Nevada’s Yucca Mountain, a remote desert location, as the site for a potential repository for geologic disposal of used nuclear fuel. After two decades of site studies, the federal government filed a construction license application in 2008 for a repository at Yucca Mountain.

However, President Obama in 2010 stopped the Yucca Mountain license review and empaneled a study commission to recommend a new policy for the long-term management of used fuel and high-level radioactive waste. In January 2012, the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future published its final recommendations, most of which are supported by the industry. The Energy Department’s used fuel management strategy to implement the commission’s recommendations was issued in January 2013.

Government Liabilities

The Department of Energy was required by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to begin removing used fuel from reactor sites by 1998. The government’s failure to do so has resulted in nearly $2 billion in court-awarded damage settlements being paid from the taxpayer-funded Judgment Fund to compensate energy companies for storing the used fuel onsite. Damages could reach more than $20 billion by 2020 and up to $500 million annually after 2020.

I know reporters didn’t get a chance to ask questions, but I had to bounce. I had a 1 p.m. tee time at Vineyard Golf Club with Alonzo Mourning and a part-owner of the Boston Celtics. Hillary and I agreed when we partied with Vernon Jordan up here, hanging out with celebrities and rich folks is fun.

Now we are engaged in a great civil divide in Ferguson, which does not even have a golf course, and that’s why I had a “logistical” issue with going there. We are testing whether that community, or any community so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure when the nation’s leader wants nothing more than to sink a birdie putt.

We are met on a great field of that battle, not Augusta, not Pebble Beach, not Bethpage Black, not Burning Tree, but Farm Neck Golf Club in Martha’s Vineyard, which we can’t get enough of — me, Alonzo, Ray Allen and Marvin Nicholson, my trip director and favorite golfing partner who has played 134 rounds and counting with me.

We have to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for my presidency, if I keep swinging from behind.

Yet it is altogether fitting and proper that I should get to play as much golf as I want, despite all the lame jokes about how golf is turning into “a real handicap” for my presidency and how I have to “stay the course” with ISIL. I’ve heard all the carping that I should be in the Situation Room droning and plinking the bad folks. I know some people think I should go to Ferguson. Don’t they understand that I’ve delegated the Martin Luther King Jr. thing to Eric Holder? Plus, Valerie Jarrett and Al Sharpton have it under control.

I know it doesn’t look good to have pictures of me grinning in a golf cart juxtaposed with ones of James Foley’s parents crying, and a distraught David Cameron rushing back from his vacation after only one day, and the Pentagon news conference with Chuck Hagel and General Dempsey on the failed mission to rescue the hostages in Syria.

We’re stuck in the rough, going to war all over again in Iraq and maybe striking Syria, too. Every time Chuck says ISIL is “beyond anything we’ve ever seen,” I sprout seven more gray hairs. But my cool golf caps cover them. If only I could just play through the rest of my presidency.

One of the largest U.S. banks, the Bank of America, is paying a record fine of nearly $17 billion because of bad housing loans it sold to investors, helping trigger the world recession.

The biggest settlement ever between the U.S. government and a private corporation was announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who said Bank of America engaged in "pervasive schemes" to defraud investors buying the bad loans.
"These loans contained material underwriting defects,” Holder said. “They were secured by properties with inflated appraisals."

The Bank of America penalty follows a combined $20 billion in fines already imposed on two other large banks, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, for their roles in selling weak home loans to investors ahead of the recession in 2008 and 2009.
With the U.S. economy, the world's largest, weakening at a rapid pace at the time, millions of homeowners defaulted on their loans, making the mortgage securities the banks sold to investors worthless. Investment and lending woes in the United States set off the world-wide recession. Some countries, chiefly in Europe, still are struggling to recover.

Attorney general Eric Holder and Missouri Democratic leaders need to apologize to the law-enforcement community for impugning officers’ motives in light of the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., according to one prominent county sheriff.

Milwaukee County sheriff David Clarke, who gained notoriety last year for encouraging gun ownership within his Wisconsin community, said Holder, Governor Jay Nixon, and Senator Claire McCaskill made the situation in Ferguson worse with their “irresponsible, inflammatory” comments about the city’s police force and its supposed problem with race relations. Clarke argued on Fox News on Friday that the trio was “insinuating that our law-enforcement officers across the United States engage in some nefarious or systematic and cultural attempts to violate people’s civil rights.”

“I thought that was a slap in the face to every law-enforcement officer in America who puts on the badge and the uniform everyday to go out and risk their lives in service to their community,” he said.

Clarke specifically called on Holder to either further explain himself or apologize to law enforcement for “adding hot sauce to this volatile situation.”

Groups that closely follow regulations are expecting the Obama administration to continue issuing controversial rules through the midterm elections, despite the political risk it could pose for Democrats.

With time running out on President Obama’s second term, federal agencies are hitting the gas on a number of regulatory initiatives that are central to the White House’s “go-it-alone” agenda.

The pace of rulemaking is a stark contrast from the months leading up to the 2012 presidential election, when the flow of rules came screeching to a near halt.

The expectation that the gears of the regulatory process will keep moving highlights how the president's desire for a second-term legacy sometimes conflicts with the short-term political considerations of congressional Democrats.

“We can’t underestimate the role politics plays in regulatory decisions,” said Stuart Shapiro, a former staffer at the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, who is now an associate professor at Rutgers University. “It’s important to remember that at the heart of regulations are political decisions.” 

Obama’s regulatory push is having a notable impact on Kentucky’s Senate race, where Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) is using the Environmental Protection Agency’s controversial climate rule against his opponent Alison Grimes, a Democrat.
