Syrian rebel forces say they are planning a nationwide offensive in conjunction with anticipated U.S. strikes against the forces of President Bashar Assad, seeking to use U.S. military might to force a decisive shift in the country’s long civil war.

Rebel commanders disagree on the level of coordination they expect with the U.S. and its allies, and made it clear they hope the United States will do more than launch the limited strikes President Obama has proposed to deter Assad from using chemical weapons. The rebels have been disappointed by America’s reluctance to get involved more deeply in the conflict.

The issue is now before Congress. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed an amended resolution Wednesday approving military action to change the battlefield momentum in Syria away from the government. But many members of Congress, particularly in the House, have expressed deep skepticism about military involvement.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) predicted Friday that his chamber would ultimately vote in favor of authorizing military action in Syria.

“I think we are going to have 60 votes,” Reid told reporters. “It’s a work in progress.”

“We have another important briefing today. Members have been coming back. I talked to one member just now — he said ‘I’ve been to three briefings.’ Have you learned anything? He said, ‘I’ve learned something new on every occasion.’”

Reid said he has spoken “many times” to President Barack Obama, but declined to answer what fellow Senate Democrats would need in order to be able to support the resolution.

The top Senate leader’s comments came as the Senate on Friday formally filed a resolution that would authorize Obama to launch military strikes in Syria, a move that sets up a series of votes on the high-stakes measure next week.

The move is part of a series of steps that will set up a procedural vote on the resolution next Wednesday. Until then, senators will continue to get briefed by top administration officials — one classified session is scheduled for Monday evening.

Reid kept his comments on the Senate floor brief, noting that “many, many people have been killed” in the Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack that the Obama administration says was perpetrated by the Assad regime.

Richard Thomas knew the woman had another illness but was unaware of the HIV, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

When the 27-year-old was told she had the disease, he collapsed in "shock" and asked to be taken to hospital for tests to see if he had contracted the virus.

Thomas, of Sandringham Drive, Leigh, pleaded guilty to raping the woman on July 20 this year.

He had let himself into her home uninvited in the middle of the night and she awoke to find him raping her from behind.

"She froze and no words were exchanged. He pulled up his shorts and left," said Harry Pepper, prosecuting.

"He was arrested and interviewed and said he had been drinking heavily, taken cocaine and ecstasy and could not recall the incident," he added.

French President François Hollande came under heightened pressure Monday to secure the backing of lawmakers before taking military action in Syria, with his position significantly complicated by President Obama’s decision to consult Congress ahead of any strike.

Hollande, a vocal critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has long stood with British Prime Minister David Cameron in calling for tougher action. But after Cameron’s parliamentary defeat last week over military action in Syria and Obama’s weekend move, Hollande finds himself facing a new set of political risks.

The threat of attacks on Syria add to uncertainty in neighboring Lebanon, which is facing pressures of its own.

France’s National Assembly is set to debate possible Syria action on Wednesday, but lawmakers are not scheduled to vote on a resolution. Under French law, Hollande does not need to call a vote until four months after any intervention has started and has, thus far, rejected one prior to any strike.

AF HAS BOMBS CAPABLE OF DESTROYING SYRIA’S CHEMICAL WEAPONS

The U.S. Air Force has spent years developing so-called “Agent Defeat Weapons” designed to target and destroy stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons without dispersing or releasing them to surrounding areas, service officials said.

“The U.S. Air Force has Agent Defeat Weapons designed to limit collateral damage and effects,” Air Force spokeswoman Jennifer Cassidy told Military​.com. “The munitions are PAW (Passive Attack Weapon) and Crash Pad.”

Both of these weapons would be carried by aircraft such as the F-15 or F-22 fighter jets and B-2 or B-1 bombers. It’s likely the Air Force would deploy the weapons from a B-2 or F-22 to take advantage of their radar-evading stealth technology considering the advanced air defense systems in Syria.

Could these weapons be used if a strike on Syria is ordered? Air Force officials would not comment upon whether the Agent Defeat Weapons were part of the discussion or strategic calculus regarding Syria.

Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) still “loves” President Barack Obama — but he thinks the White House’s handling of the situation in Syria has been “embarrassing.”

“I love Obama, and you’ll never find a truer Democrat than me, but this whole idea of any president of the United States drawing lines saying that if any country does something, that he considers wrong, that the nation is going to war, it’s unheard of–drawing a red line,” the Democrat congressman said Monday in response to a question about the president’s so-called “red line” on the use of chemical weapons.

“So, of course, it’s embarrassing. I wish it didn’t happen,” he added.

Secretary of State John Kerry must be “more embarrassed than me” after giving that speech on Friday, the New York Democrat said.

“I couldn’t see anything urgent about” intervening in Syria, he added, “and I’m glad the president reviewed his thinking and he is going to give us time to discuss it.”

The United States petroleum trade deficit hit a record low in June as booming domestic oil production displaced imports and exports of refined petroleum products increased.

That played a significant role in revising U.S. gross domestic product growth in the second quarter to 2.5, up from 1.7 percent, said Furman and Sperling.

The economists noted that U.S. oil production is at its highest level in 17 years. They also said increased biofuel production and fuel efficiency standards will have a positive impact on the petroleum trade deficit.

Republicans and industry contend the Obama administration can do more on the supply side by opening federal onshore and offshore land to more drilling.

They say that would provide jobs and enhance energy security. Sperling and Furman noted the oil and gas industry has added more than 35,000 jobs in the past four years.

Consider this: Mr. Obama made his dramatic Rose Garden statement Saturday — then headed to the golf course. Congress has no plans to cut short its 30-day vacation, and the president did not call lawmakers back. So much for urgency.

The conventional wisdom is, as usual, wrong. Losing the congressional vote won’t be an embarrassment for the president, as all the talking heads are still parroting. A loss would be a double win. First, because a “No” vote would allow the foreign policy neophyte to walk away from his blundering “red line” declaration on chemical weapons (“I wanted to go in, but Congress said no”). And second, should Republicans who voted for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars now oppose Syria, the president would be armed with clear “evidence” that their opposition is purely political.

Keep in mind: This president knows no way to campaign other than to blame others. He’ll batter Republicans for all of 2014 as obstructionists should they be the reason the effort fails.

A public high school in Kentucky became the center of controversy this week after a teacher at the school draped an American flag on the ground and encouraged students to step on it as part of an art project.

The display at McCracken County High School, was reportedly a re-creation of “Dread” Scott Tyler’s 1989 art display titled “The Proper Way to Display an American Flag,” according to Fox News Radio’s Todd Starnes.

Students were reportedly encouraged to stand on the flag and write reflections about how they felt standing on it, reported Starnes. According to WLEX-TV, the flag was stepped on and said visitors “had to step on the flag in order to participate in the project.”

The teacher has since apologized.

Three Somerville High School students have been arrested in connection with an alleged rape that occurred at Camp Lenox in Otis this past weekend.

Galileo Mondol, 17, and two 16-year-olds were arrested Friday.

Mondol is being charged with one count of aggravated rape of a child under 16, two counts of assault with intent to rape a child under 16, one count of indecent assault and battery on a person who has attained 14 years of age, three counts of assault and battery, and three counts intimidation of a witness or other person.

The alleged incident occurred at Camp Lenox in Otis where the City of Somerville had rented the facility for team-building activities for its fall sports teams.

Authorities say the three suspects, juniors at Somerville High School, entered a cabin occupied by freshmen students Sunday and assaulted three victims.

Obama’s belated agreement to take the Syrian strikes before Congress, while asserting that he will not be bound by whatever Congress decides, buys him a convenient exit strategy.

The Congress trap will let Obama opt out of an attack that he is ambivalent about while blaming Republicans for destroying American credibility. Even now the progressive spin machine is roaring into action and denouncing Congress for not immediately returning to session to consider Obama’s plan.

Considering that Obama waited for two years before deciding to bomb Syria, it seems ridiculously hypocritical of his political palace guard to denounce Congress for not immediately springing into action; but hypocrisy is hardly an obstacle for a Democratic Party that dramatically reversed its position on Iraq and now once again favors unilateral wars over WMDs.

Taliban fighters attacked part of a U.S. military outpost in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Monday, officials said, less than a week after targeting a Polish base in a nearby province.

Attacks on Afghan security forces and civilians have also mounted this week killing dozens and adding to fears the drawdown of foreign troops, most of whom are due to leave the country by the end of next year, is allowing insurgents to regain lost territory.

"In a parking lot used by Americans there was a huge blast and after that a massive attack... A number of our heroes are fighting," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in an email.
