The number of people with Ebola in west Africa has risen above 16,000, with the death toll from the outbreak reaching almost 7,000, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.

The number of deaths is more than 1,000 higher than the figure issued by the WHO just two days ago, but it is thought to include deaths that have gone unreported in the weeks or months since the outbreak began. Most of the new deaths were recorded in Liberia.

The WHO has warned that its figures could be a significant underestimation of the number of infections and deaths. Data from the outbreak has been patchy and the totals often rise considerably when backlogs of information are cleared. The latest confirmed data shows that almost half those known to have been infected with Ebola have died.

Meanwhile, two children tested for Ebola after arriving in Britain from Africa are not infected, Public Health England confirmed on Saturday. It said the overall risk to the public of the virus continued to be “very low”.

The children, whose ages and names have not been released, underwent precautionary tests in Newcastle for both the virus and malaria.

The outbreak has been centred on Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. They account for the vast majority of the cases reported to date, with about three dozen cases elsewhere.

There are national protests – even riots – over the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown was shot by one policeman after significant provocation and violence. The incident was thoroughly investigated by the national and international press. It was investigated by local police, who released findings to the public. A grand jury considered the facts and found no cause for charges against the police officer.

Meanwhile, Miriam Carey, a young black mother with her baby in tow, was gunned down in a hail of at least 26 gunshots by Capitol Police in Washington more than a year ago. She committed no crime, but made a wrong turn near the White House. Few facts have been publicly released, and all official video has been suppressed. Despite investigations by the police and Justice Department, no charges have been recommended against any police officers. There have been no demonstrations, the media have demonstrated a complete lack of interest in the case (with the exception of WND, which has covered the case with dozens of stories) and Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have shown no interest.

In fact, on Wednesday, the Washington Post released its first major story on the Carey incident, confirming the shocking reporting of WND, over the last 13 months.

What’s the difference between these two cases?

For the life of me, the contrast between the Brown case and the Carey case couldn’t be more stark.

While the Justice Department is still investigating the Brown case, it long ago concluded there was “insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights or local charges against officers from the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Capitol Police.”

Russia's Strategic Rocket Forces are considering bringing back iconic Soviet-era nuclear missile trains as Moscow pumps money into a complete overhaul its aging nuclear arsenal.

According to an unidentified source in the Russian military-industrial complex quoted by the TASS news agency on Thursday, the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology — makers of the Topol, Yars and Bulava missiles — is designing a next-generation missile launching train.

"While the decision to start manufacturing [missile trains] is still pending, the probability is high that it will happen," the source was quoted as saying, explaining that technical studies and cost estimates are still being conducted.

"In the best-case scenario, they will be deployed by the end of the decade, probably somewhere around 2019," he said.

The Russian nuclear forces are the prime beneficiaries of Moscow's sweeping 20 trillion ruble ($500 billion) military rearmament drive, with authorities pledging to completely modernize the country's arsenal with new rockets better suited to respond to modern threats.

The Soviet Union began deploying nuclear missile trains in 1987. The trains used RT-23 Molodets missiles, built by the giant Yuzhmash machine building plant located in modern day Ukraine. By the time the U.S.S.R. collapsed in 1991, 56 of the missiles were deployed on missile trains. Ukraine stopped building RT-23s, and by 2005 Russia had decommissioned all of them.

The Daily Treasury Statement that was released Wednesday afternoon as Americans were preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving revealed that the U.S. Treasury has been forced to issue $1,040,965,000,000 in new debt since fiscal 2015 started just eight weeks ago in order to raise the money to pay off Treasury securities that were maturing and to cover new deficit spending by the government.

During those eight weeks, Treasury took in $341,591,000,000 in revenues. That was a record for the period between Oct. 1 and Nov. 25. But that record $341,591,000,000 in revenues was not enough to finance ongoing government spending let alone pay off old debt that matured.

The Treasury also drew down its cash balance by $45.057 billion during the period, starting with $126,568,000,000 in cash and ending with $81,511,000,000.

The only way the Treasury could handle the $942,103,000,000 in old debt that matured during the period plus finance the new deficit spending the government engaged in was to roll over the old debt into new debt and issue enough additional new debt to cover the new deficit spending.

This mode of financing the federal government resembles what the Securities and Exchange Commission calls a Ponzi scheme. “A Ponzi scheme," says the Securities and Exchange Commission, “is an investment fraud that involves the payment of purported returns to existing investors from funds contributed by new investors,” says the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“With little or no legitimate earnings, the schemes require a consistent flow of money from new investors to continue,” explains the SEC. “Ponzi schemes tend to collapse when it becomes difficult to recruit new investors or when a large number of investors ask to cash out.”

In testimony before the Senate Finance Committee in October 2013, Lew explained why he wanted the Congress to agree to increase the federal debt limit—and why the Treasury has no choice but to constantly issue new debt.

“Every week we roll over approximately $100 billion in U.S. bills,” Lew told the committee. “If U.S. bondholders decided that they wanted to be repaid rather than continuing to roll over their investments, we could unexpectedly dissipate our entire cash balance.”

“There is no plan other than raising the debt limit that permits us to meet all of our obligations,” Lew said.

“Let me remind everyone,” Lew said, “principal on the debt is not something we pay out of our cash flow of revenues. Principal on the debt is something that is a function of the markets rolling over.”

The vast amount of debt that the Treasury must roll over in such a short time frame is driven by the fact the Treasury has put most of the debt into short-term “bills” and mid-term “notes”—on which it can pay lower interest rates—rather than into long-term bonds, which demand significantly higher interest rates.

At the end of October, according to the Treasury’s Monthly Statement of the Public Debt, the total debt of the federal government was $17,937,160,000,000.

Of this, $5,080,104,000,000 was what the Treasury calls “intragovernmental” debt, which is money the Treasury has borrowed and spent out of trust funds theoretically set aside for other purposes—such as the Social Security Trust Fund.

The remaining $12,857,056,000,000 was “debt held by the public.” This part of the debt included $517,029,000,000 “nonmarketable” Treasury securities (such as savings bonds) and $12,340,028,000,000 in “marketable” Treasury securities, including bills, notes, bonds and Treasuring Inflation-Protected Securities.

But only $1,547,073,000,000 of the $12,857,056,000,000 in marketable debt was in long-term Treasury bonds that mature in 30 years. These bonds carried an average interest rate of 4.919 percent as of the end of October, according to the Treasury.

The largest share of the marketable debt--$8,192,466,000,000—was in notes that mature in 2,3,5,7 or 10 years, and which haf an average interest rate of 1.807 percent as of the end of October.

Another $1,412,388,000,000 of the marketable debt was in Treasury bills, which carry “maturities ranging from a few days to 52 weeks,” says the Treasury. These $1.4 trillion in short-term Treasury bills had an average interest rate of 0.056 percent as of the end of October, according to the Treasury.

The continual rolling over of these short-term, low-interest bills helped drive over the $1-trillion mark the new debt the Treasury had to issue in the first eight weeks of this fiscal year.

The Treasury has taken out what amounts to an adjustable-rate mortgage on our ever-growing national debt.

If the Treasury were forced to convert the $1.4 trillion in short-term bills (on which it now pays an average interest rate of 0.056 percent) into 30-year bonds (on which it now pays an average interest rate of 4.919 percent) the interest on that $1.4 trillion in debt would increase 88-fold.

OPEC’s decision against cutting oil production, despite a global glut in supplies, triggered a $5 collapse in crude prices and prompted a fall in early trading on Asian markets Friday.
The cartel pumping out one-third of the world’s oil opted to stick by its output target, even after prices have plunged by 35 percent in value since June.
The 12-nation cartel “decided to maintain the production level of 30 million barrels per day” where it has stood for three years, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries said in a communique.
OPEC Secretary-General Abdullah El-Badri said the cartel would sit tight before the next output meeting scheduled for June in Vienna, where it is headquartered.
“We have to wait and see how the market will settle,” he told the meeting’s closing press conference.
“As I said many times ... we don’t want to panic.”
Going into the latest meeting, OPEC faced pressure from its poorer members, notably Venezuela, to cut output as collapsing prices slashed their precious revenues.
However, its powerful Gulf members rejected calls to turn down the taps unless they are guaranteed market share in the highly competitive arena, particularly in the United States, where a flood of cheaper oil from shale rock has contributed to the global oversupply.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Thursday he would keep pushing OPEC to cut oil output to boost sliding crude prices.
“We have not succeeded yet, but ... we will continue to try until prices return to where they should be, at around $100 per barrel,” Maduro said in a televised address.
Early trading in Asia on Friday saw markets mostly fall following OPEC’s decision.

Democrats hope to take back control of the Senate in 2016, but their plans could be complicated by potential retirements.

The two Democratic senators most likely to retire are Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who represent both sides of the party’s ideological spectrum.

Boxer, whose fourth term expires at the end of 2016, has a paltry $149,000 in her campaign account, less than almost every other senator facing election next year.

As the nation’s most populous state, California is expensive to cover with advertising. If Boxer decides to run for reelection, she would face a major fundraising task although she has proven herself capable in the past.

Boxer, 74, is undecided whether to serve another six years in the Senate. Her decision may rest on whether Democrats look likely to pick up the three to four seats — or five if Republicans win the White House — they need to regain the majority.

“I'm going to decide way ahead, so after this election, and then early next cycle, I'll make that decision," Boxer told the Associated Press in September.

She reported $3.6 million in her campaign account at the end of September 2008, two years before she last ran for reelection.

Manchin is eyeing a return to the governor’s mansion, and his fundraising report filed with the Federal Election Commission shows he is already starting to lay the groundwork.

And now it appears the end is near for the low-cost version of the iPhone, the 5C. The colourful device has been such a flop that Apple is reportedly set to halt production within a matter of months.

According to Taiwan’s Industrial and Commercial Times, production of the device will be wound down as soon as January next year.

By mid-2015, it will stop altogether.

The handset, which was released last year, was criticised for it gaudy neon colours. The company’s former advertising executive Ken Segall spoke about the failure of the phone earlier in the year, saying Apple “doesn’t do cheap”.

Frozen 2 is on its way, according to Idina Menzel, the star who voices Elsa.

After months of speculation about a sequel to the Disney hit, Menzel appeared to confirm that a second feature-length film is planned.

Asked in a Telegraph interview what she could say about rumours of a sequel and a stage musical - in addition to a six-minute short due to show in cinemas this Christmas - Menzel said: “That they’re all in the works.”

She expects to be invited back to voice Elsa on screen, but said she was unlikely to be involved in the theatre production.

“Not the stage show – I don’t know what will happen with that – but the movie hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride,” she said.

Menzel, 43, a Broadway star for many years, said she was still amazed to be approached by young girls who recognise her as the singer of Let It Go and other Frozen anthems.

“I remember some of those classic Disney songs from movies, and you knew the character but you didn’t know the person behind the song. But this is different, this is weird,” she said.

“I can’t give any tips on how to sing Let It Go because I barely can sing it sometimes. It’s really hard. I can’t wake up in the morning and just sing it.

“I guess my advice is that everyone who likes to sing it should sing it loud and proud and karaoke it out, sing it in the shower, sing it in the car and don’t worry about hitting the high notes.”

The military said Friday that it has removed 433 land mines this year.
This year's mine clearance operation, which started in April, ended Thursday, with soldiers from six units clearing 312 anti-tank mines and 121 anti-personnel mines, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
Operations took place at six areas, including regions bordering North Korea and coastal areas.
"The military has removed about 69,000 mines over the past 17 years, since the operation began in 1998. It plans to go on searching for mines near the Civilian Control Line and some rear bases," the JCS said in a news release.
The JCS said it has conducted procedural training and safety education for soldiers to prevent any possible accidents during operations, with support from local governments.
More than 1 million mines were reportedly laid near the Demilitarized Zone during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

A student has filed a lawsuit against a teacher she says raped her, got her pregnant and then tried to abort the baby using a metal ruler inside her vagina while the two were inside a classroom.

David Depuydt, a former teacher at Horizon Community Learning Center in the Ahwatukee foothills north of Phoenix, Arizona, was arrested in August 2013 on 13 counts of sexual conduct with a minor, according to Courthouse News Service. He pleaded guilty in August to two counts of sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor. Depuydt, who was 27 at the time of the assault, was sentenced to five years in prison and lifetime probation.

The student, identified only as Jane Doe in legal documents, claims she suffered severe emotional distress and even tried to commit suicide after the sexual assault and abortion attempt. Doe said she was 16 when Depuydt was designated her supervisor for a community service project she was required to perform.

COFFEE STUDY CLAIMS–3 CUPS A DAY MAY SLASH ALZHEIMER RISK

Scientists have discovered a link between regular daily intake of the hot drink and a reduction of up to 20 per cent of the chances of developing dementia.

The report released today (thurs) from the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee highlights the role nutrition can play in preserving cognitive function, especially during the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's before full-blown symptoms of dementia occur.

It notes that a Mediterranean diet, consisting of fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil and red wine, has already been associated with a reduced risk for development of Alzheimer's Disease.

But it adds that the latest research now suggests that compounds called polyphenols and caffeine can also be responsible for this protective effect - and these exact compounds are also found in high quantities in coffee.

It shows that regular, life-long moderate coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease with the body of evidence suggesting that coffee drinkers can reduce their risk of developing the disease.

Dr Arfran Ikram, an assistant professor in neuroepidemiology at Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam, who contributed to the report's findings, said: "The majority of human epidemiological studies suggest that regular coffee consumption over a lifetime is associated with a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease, with an optimum protective effect occurring with three to five cups of coffee per day."

How could a major tax deal brokered by the top Senate Democrat die so quickly at the hands of a Democratic president?

President Barack Obama has spent November acting with a defiant fury, moving with little regard for the message voters sent at the polls.

This damn-the-GOP-torpedoes burst is dramatically different from the contrition and soul searching other presidents endured after their parties suffered stinging defeats.

Obama instead draws his already insular circle tighter. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel doesn’t spout the White House line in public, so he’s out. Chief of Staff Denis McDonough becomes a frequent visitor to Congress but doesn’t heed warnings from Republican leaders that an immigration order would be political poison.

“Free at last; free at last from the bondage of (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid, threats from the Republican leadership, and persistent press ‘wimp’ criticism,” said Stephen Wayne, a presidential scholar at Georgetown University.

“Now he can do what he thinks is right and to the extent possible do so with the help of loyal compatriots that believe in him and his priorities,” he said.

Two factors appear to be driving Obama. “He wants to prove he’s still relevant,” said Darrell West, vice president and director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution, a center-left policy research center.

And engaged, said White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer.

“Typically, when you have a change in power in Congress, the new congressional majority dominates the conversation and drives the discussion,” Pfeiffer said. “Since right after the election, the president has been driving the discussions, moving forward aggressively on core priorities.”

Voters, though, generally rejected those core priorities, as Republicans had a net gain of at least eight Senate seats and will start 2015 with their biggest majority in the House of Representatives since the late 1940s.

Obama maintains he’s on the right course; it’s just that Republican obstructionists have made progress difficult.

SPACE STATION 3-D PRINTER AT WORK IN THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION–MAKES A NAMEPLATE MADE IN SPACE

Mankind has taken another step forward in its mission to conquer space: 3-D printing in zero gravity.
A 3-D printer delivered to the International Space Station two months ago made its first creation Monday: a faceplate reading "Made in Space, NASA." The plate was to be fixed back onto the printer.
Made in Space refers to the California-based company that supplied the printer.
"When the first human fashioned a tool from a rock, it couldn't have been conceived that one day we'd be replicating the same fundamental idea in space," Aaron Kemmer, chief executive officer, said in a statement, according to Associated Press.
Some 20 more objects will be printed over the next few weeks for analysis back home. NASA hopes to use 3-D printing to make parts for broken space equipment.

The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto an emerging deal that would restore several lapsed tax breaks, bringing into the open tensions between President Obama and the top Senate Democrat.
Jennifer Friedman, a White House spokeswoman, said the deal being hashed out between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) gave far too much to business interests, and far too little to the middle-class.

“The president would veto the proposed deal because it would provide permanent tax breaks to help well-connected corporations while neglecting working families,” Friedman said, just hours after reports emerged that a $450 billion deal on the tax breaks was close at hand and that negotiators hoped to wrap it up by Tuesday.
The White House veto threat upended those talks, underscoring that both Obama and House Democrats had some problems with the agreement that Reid was negotiating.
Top administration officials, like Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and White House spokesman Josh Earnest, had warned lawmakers on Monday that they wouldn’t approve of the deal being negotiated on Capitol Hill.
The deal would have extended top priorities for the business community, like faster write-offs for expenses and an expanded version of the popular credit for research, but would have left untouched tax breaks for low-income families championed by Democrats.
Aides on Capitol Hill said Tuesday evening that the deal was off, and that only time would tell if it could be revived.
Obama’s efforts to submarine the package of tax breaks, commonly known as extenders, also comes after the White House and Reid’s aides have sniped at each other in the press following the GOP takeover in the Senate.

The Commission on the Theft of Intellectual Property estimated such theft costs the United States $300 billion and 1.2 million jobs a year.
Fleming said, based on research from his company’s intelligence unit and client situations, the cost is closer to $500 billion worth of raw innovation that is stolen from U.S. companies.
That $500 billion would otherwise generate revenue, profits, and jobs. In a previous interview, Fleming estimated the total loss to the economy from the theft of innovation is $5 trillion each year when considering the expected 10-year life of the research and development.

President Obama's executive amnesty for an estimated five million illegal aliens is, from the perspective of Republicans, an unconstitutional power grab that threatens the republic. In Obama's telling, over soft piano music in a campaign-style YouTube video, it “just comes down to people.”

Another version is the one agents of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) experience in trying to enforce U.S. immigration laws – specifically a five point checklist they were provided Friday evening and obtained by Breitbart News.

The bureaucratic document uses the Orwellian title “Parental Accountability Checklist.” The line below that explains it is a “Checklist for NOT Arresting/Removing Individuals Under Deferred Action Expansion.”

First, agents must ask detained aliens: did you have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident child on Nov. 20, 2014? Have you resided in the U.S. since Jan. 1, 2010? Were you physically present in the U.S. on Nov. 20, 2014? And were you “without lawful immigration status” on Nov. 20, 2014?

If the alien answers “yes” to these questions, and they have not been convicted of serious crimes, “the individual should be released from custody or not removed, and referred to USCIS to seek deferred action,” the document instructs.

As one might imagine, apprehended aliens theoretically facing deportation may not always provide truthful answers to these questions. So ICE has established the robust policy of taking people completely at their word and letting someone else check it out later, should the alien ever later apply for official amnesty from the Obama administration.

“It's not our job to make any kind of initial investigation or ask for anything...just take them at their word and release so they can apply in Jan and let CIS figure it out,” an angry ICE agent explained.

Ferguson protesters marched in St. Louis Sunday and defamed memorials, one of which is over 100 years old.

The group Anarcho-Communist Solidarity Alliance took credit for defaming two different landmarks. One landmark, on Flora Place and South Grand Boulevard, with tagged with The Hunger Games inspired, “If we burn, you burn with us – FTP.” The defamation has since been painted over.

The group also took credit for defaming a statue called “Naked Truth,” a more than 100-year-old memorial honoring three German-American Republicans and civil rights leaders: Emil Preetorius, Carl Daenzer, and Carl Schurz. Protesters sprayed “FTP” on the front of the statue.

At the culmination of a tumultuous day, President Obama spoke from the White House on the decision made in Ferguson not to prosecute the police officer who shot and killed an 18-year-old African American man this past August.

"We need to accept that this decision was the grand jury's to make," Obama said Monday night. "There are Americans who agree with it, and there are Americans who are deeply upset, even angry. It's an understandable reaction. But I join Michael's parents in asking anyone who protests this decision to do so peacefully."

A St. Louis County grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of Michael Brown, the unarmed 18-year-old who was killed by Wilson's gunfire in August. County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch announced the news Monday evening in a press conference.

The decision has been months in the making, and threatens to reignite tensions in Ferguson between heavily-armed police and protesters in the area.

THE NEW COMPUTER VIRUS THIS 2014 REVEALED CALLED THE REGIN

ONE of the most complicated and deadly computer viruses has been uncovered by internet security company Symantec.

The complex malware can disguise itself as legitimate Microsoft software and is designed to steal data from infected systems, which Symantec claims can take screenshots, control the cursor and even steal passwords.

Named Regin, the highly sophisticated software is believed to have been created by a government and most likely took months, if not years, to develop. It has been used to attack individuals and small businesses as well as private companies, government entities and research institutes.

Telecoms companies have also been infected, allowing hackers to gain access to phone calls.

Sian John, a security strategist at Symantec, said, “It looks like it comes from a Western organisation. It’s the level of skill and expertise, the length of time over which it was developed.”

Computers can be infected with the software through means including fake internet sites and instant messenger programs. It is unusually low-key, meaning that it can be used on a target for several years before being noticed.

NASA is planning on a new project that will create a new source of revenue. Asteroid mining is the future and two companies have already signed contracts with Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources with the intent of pursuing the project.

The groups are working on finding a sustainable strategy of gathering resources in space.

Bringing in resources from space to Earth can cost anywhere between $5,000 to $25,000. Therefore, harvesting resources in space is the main option the companies are looking at. They are also searching for asteroids close to Earth that host ice, minerals, metals, silicate minerals and carbonaceous minerals. They are still keeping an open eye toward the option of bringing the resources to Earth.

Planetary Resources plans to use several mid-sized space telescopes to help find the asteroids with the best potential for return. The company also looks to build revenue from commercializing its Arkyd 200 or 300. At some point, the company hopes to create a depot that will allow for mining operations.

The groups are working on finding a sustainable strategy of gathering resources in space.

SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRY TO DEVELOP LNG TANKERS –AS ENERGY DRIVES THE WORLD TO WORK

South Korea's leading shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. said Monday it has won a 664 billion won (US$622 million) order to build three liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from an Asian shipper.

Under the deal signed with a undisclosed shipper, Samsung Heavy will build three 174,000-cubic-meter level carriers by 2018, which will be equipped with a "dual fuel" engine system that bolsters efficiency.

Once completed, they will be deployed to ship U.S. shale gas to Asian countries. Samsung Heavy has won a combined $6.5 billion in orders this year. Samsung said the demand for LNG carriers is anticipated to rise down the road, as projects in the U.S. are projected to lead to more exports of shale gas and the need for 60 additional carriers in the near future, with more demand to come from Australia, Mozambique and Tanzania.

"Global orders for carriers are set to reach more than 30 units every year following the expansion of LNG exports from the U.S., Australia and Eastern Africa," Samsung said in its release. "As Samsung already tops the global LNG carrier market, we are anticipated to take the lead in future orders as well."

In its application, the company said exports may occur from the ports of Jacksonville, West Palm, Miami, Pensacola, and Tampa, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; Gulfport, Mississippi; Savannah, Georgia; New Orleans; and Houston and Galveston, Texas, with the decision on which ports will be used based on the final destination.

To keep our nation’s surge in energy production going, it’s both smart and necessary to find new markets for American natural gas. The LNG export process provides an excellent way to create jobs for Americans and keep our economy strong. It’s good to see Florida playing an important role in strengthening America’s energy future.

Before Ferguson exploded in reaction to the August shooting of black teen Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, the St. Louis police chief raised eyebrows when he called for the use of drones to monitor high-crime areas.

The proposal was a response to what St. Louis police authorities called “subhuman, antisocial, urban terrorist” behavior by criminals.

St. Louis also is home of the notorious “Knockout Game,” a random but racially motivated assault that has claimed at least six lives.

St. Louis is 44 percent white and 49 percent black, but statistics shows a racial imbalance in crime. Based on the city’s official crime data for 2012 — the most recent year which data are available — 97.6 percent of those arrested for murder were black and 2.4 percent were white. More than 82 percent of those arrested for serious crimes like murder, aggravated assault and larceny were black, while just 17.5 percent arrested were white.

Black males in St. Louis were responsible for the vast majority (63.5 percent) of crimes committed. Other groups contribute significantly less to the serious crimes in St. Louis. White males made up 17 percent of arrests, black females were 14 percent of arrests and white females only 5.3 percent of arrests.

There are other strange imbalances in arrests: Black females were arrested for 14 murders compared with three white males arrested for murder. Black females were arrested for more robberies, aggravated assaults and larcenies than white males.

These are just a few of the lowlights in a city on the verge of becoming, as U.S. News said, the most dangerous city in America.

Consider one violent night in St. Louis last June when 18 people were shot in seven different shootings.

“Bloody Night Leaves Many in St. Louis Outraged” read one headline.

However, some of the shooting victims were not outraged enough to cooperate with law enforcement. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay described the “no snitchin’” mentality of many crime victims:

“These are disputes, and there are victims who won’t talk to the police,” the mayor said. “Trying to make an arrest isn’t that simple. In one case, they’ve got (multiple) people shot and not one of them would identify the shooter.”

President Obama's executive actions on immigration threw gasoline on the fire of border politics — and nowhere is it burning hotter than in Nevada, where incoming Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is gearing up for a tough reelection.

The election might be Reid’s toughest, especially if Sandoval is the opponent. Reid’s approval ratings are underwater, hovering in the low 40s in the few recent polls of Nevada. His best hope of winning reelection is to galvanize the state’s rapidly growing populations of Hispanics and Asian Americans. Immigration reform presents him with his best chance to do so.

Reid described Obama’s immigration announcement as “great news for families in Nevada and across the country” in a Thursday night statement, adding that the president’s decision “will not only keep families together, it will enforce our immigration laws in a way that protects our national security and public safety.”

The undocumented immigrants granted amnesty by President Barack Obama’s executive orders will likely cost taxpayers $2 trillion, according to Heritage Foundation poverty expert Robert Rector.

“The net cost — which is total benefits minus total benefits paid in — of the amnesty recipients I estimate will be around $2 trillion over the course of their lifetime,” Rector explained in an interview with Breitbart News Monday. He added that the calculation is based on the assumption that 4 million undocumented immigrants will participate and they will live, on average, 50 years.

According to Rector — who has published extensively on welfare, poverty, and immigration — the cost has two components: The first is the potential to access Social Security and Medicare, given amnestied undocumented immigrants’ ability to obtain work permits and Social Security Numbers.

“What [Obama] is doing is he is putting these 4 million people — who on average have a 10th grade education — into the Social Security and Medicare programs,” Rector said. He used much of the same methodology he incorporated in his May 2013 study on the cost of amnesty to reach his conclusions.

While Americans are focused on what delicious foods they’re going to eat for Thanksgiving, the White House is focused on releasing its massive regulatory agenda — marking the fifth time the Obama administration has released its regulatory road map on the eve of a major holiday.

The federal Unified Agenda is the Obama administration’s regulatory road map, and it lays out thousands of regulations being finalized in the coming months. Under President Barack Obama, there has been a tradition of releasing the agenda late on Friday — and right before a major holiday.

“It’s become an unfortunate tradition of this administration and others to drop these regulatory agendas late on a Friday and right before a holiday,” Matt Shudtz, executive director of the Center for Progressive Reform, told The Hill newspaper.

The White House’s regulatory agenda for spring 2014 was released on the eve of the Memorial Day weekend, when millions of people set out on weekend getaways or family vacations.

“It’s unfortunate because it’s an update on protections for Americans of all stripes,” Shudtz told the Hill. “It lays out the administration’s plan and it deserves more attention.”

But the White House may have a good reason to do so because its Unified Agenda for fall 2014 includes some 3,415 regulations– more than the last regulatory agenda, and one that includes 189 rules that cost more than $100 million.

Republicans have said the administration’s executive action on immigration would make it harder for millions of U.S. citizens to find work, or to command a decent wage. Over the last few weeks, many Republicans have leaned on the law of supply and demand to show that the White House’s plans would be disastrous for millions of Americans who are still facing economic hardship.

But an 24-page analysis from the Council of Economic Advisers dismissed the idea entirely, and the millions of illegal immigrants who could qualify for work authorization will have “no impact” at all on the U.S. employment situation.

“Theory suggests that these policy changes would not have an effect on the long-run employment (or unemployment rate),” it said. “Consistent with the theory, much of the academic literature suggests that changes in immigration policy have no effect on the likelihood of employment for native workers.”

It said research on the 1986 immigration reform law “found little evidence of significant changes in labor force participation or employment status.”

“Therefore, in our lower-bound estimate, we assume no impact of deferred action on labor force participation,” it said. In a summer section at the top of the analysis, it said the CEA sees “no impact on the likelihood of employment for U.S.-born workers.”

The CEA’s analysis seemed to be based on the idea that work authorization would only be temporary for these millions of potential workers. The White House action gives them a chance at a three-year work authorization, and CEA said that based on the “academic literature,” it “does not estimate large changes in the labor force as a result of this component of the new actions on immigration.”

Russia is set to lose about $40 billion (32 billion euros) per year due to Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Monday.

"We are losing around $40 billion per year due to geopolitical sanctions and we are losing some $90 to $100 billion per year due to oil prices falling 30 percent," Siluanov said in a speech at an economic forum in Moscow, quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.

Sanctions imposed by the European Union and the US on Russia's economy, which is largely dependent on exports of raw materials, block its access to international capital markets and also to technology.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday accused the West of attempting to achieve "regime change" in Russia through sanctions that aim to destroy the economy and rouse public protests.

President Vladimir Putin suggested Sunday that Russia could experience "catastrophic consequences" from sanctions, the falling oil price and the plunging ruble, while arguing that these would have knock-on effects for other countries.

"The modern world is interdependent. It's far from guaranteed that sanctions, the steep fall in oil prices, and the loss of value of the national currency will lead to negative results or catastrophic consequences only for us," Putin warned in an interview with TASS news agency.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down under pressure, the first cabinet-level casualty of the collapse of President Obama’s Democratic majority in the Senate and the struggles of his national security team to respond to an onslaught of global crises.

The president, who is expected to announce Mr. Hagel’s resignation in a Rose Garden appearance on Monday, made the decision to ask his defense secretary — the sole Republican on his national security team — to step down last Friday after a series of meetings over the past two weeks, senior administration officials said.

The officials described Mr. Obama’s decision to remove Mr. Hagel, 68, as a recognition that the threat from the Islamic State would require a different kind of skills than those that Mr. Hagel was brought on to employ. A Republican with military experience who was skeptical about the Iraq war, Mr. Hagel came in to manage the Afghanistan combat withdrawal and the shrinking Pentagon budget in the era of budget sequestration.

But now “the next couple of years will demand a different kind of focus,” one administration official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. He insisted that Mr. Hagel was not fired, saying that the defense secretary initiated discussions about his future two weeks ago with the president, and that the two men mutually agreed that it was time for him to leave.

The Washington Post: We've seen in the past few months various instances of what seems to be provocative behavior by Russia. You've experienced that here in Finland. I’m wondering what you think Russia’s objective is.

Niinisto: Well, first we have this catastrophe in the Ukraine. But alongside that catastrophe there’s a lot of tension between Russia and the West. And what we have seen now, in the Baltic Sea area, is surely a [result] of these kind of increased tensions internationally.We have had five violations of our airspace during the summer.

WP: The concern is that something like this could escalate very quickly. Is that a concern that you have?

SN: I wouldn't say it would escalate as a military conflict very easily, not intentionally. They were testing how we'd react. But accidents might happen.

WP: Is there a broader strategic objective on Russia’s part? It seems like there is a new push.

SN: Undoubtedly that is due to the tension I described. The Russians want to show "we are here."

WP: How have events in Ukraine and how have these violations in Finland’s airspace affected the mood here in Finland?

SN: We have a long history with Russia — not that peaceful all the time. So everything Russians are doing, surely the Finns notice and think very carefully what that might mean.

THE CHINESE MARKET PREFERS OVERSEAS DAIRY PRODUCTS FOR ITS CHILDREN AFTER THE SCARE OF TAINTED LOCAL BRANDS OF BABY FORMULA OCCURRED IN 2008–CHINA TO INVEST IN NEW ZEALAND DAIRY TO COVER PACKAGING, PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING

One of China's biggest dairy producers has unveiled two billion yuan (NZ$400 million) investment plans in New Zealand.

Xinhua news agency says today the Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co Ltd had announced that its Oceania production base in Waimate south of Timaru will take just over half the cash.

Its spending will cover packaging, production, processing and research and development.

Yili say Waimate, which they have already spent 1.2 billion yuan into, will be the largest integrated dairy production base in the world.

Xinhua said Yili's move came as increasingly more Chinese customers prefer overseas dairy products as the reputation of local brands was damaged in the melamine-tainted baby formula scandal in 2008.

Yili was badly damaged by the scandal after tests found its infant formula contained melamine.

It recalled the milk and apologised to the public.

Its share price crashed and it was stripped of a state status as "Chinese national brand".

No child was ever confirmed as being ill as a result of drinking Yili milk.

The second phase of their New Zealand investment will include a raw milk processing plant, a UHT milk plant, a milk powder plant and a packaging plant.

UBISOFT ASSASIN CREED IS NOT A HISTORY LESSON BUT A SOFTWARE GAME ABOUT A FRENCH REVOLUTION–BUT FRENCH POLITICIAN ARGUES THAT IT DESCREDITS THE FRENCH REPUBLIC

A high-profile French politician has accused ‘Assassin’s Creed: Unity’, which is set in Paris in 1789, of re-writing one of the most important periods in French history.

According to left-wing firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the game “discredits the Republic” by portraying Queen Marie-Antoinette and “treacherous King Louis XVI” in a good light, while showing the people of Paris as a “barbarian horde”.

“It’s propaganda against the people,” the leader of the far-left Parti de Gauche told France Info radio on Friday. “It portrays the people as bloodthirsty savages.”

Mélenchon’s anger is piqued by the portrayal of famed revolutionary leader Maximilien de Robespierre as a monster who was “far more dangerous than any king” and the instigator of the “Reign of Terror” that left “hundreds of thousands dead, and the streets running with blood”.

Historians argue about Robespierre’s sins and virtues. Some see him as a paranoid despot who orchestrated mass killings of “enemies of the revolution”, while others see him as the voice of the poor and oppressed who rose up against a tyrannical and exploitative monarchy.

For Mélenchon, the “incorruptible Great Maximilien” was a defender of the French Republic who wanted to abolish slavery and the death penalty, while promoting equal rights for women.

“Not a history lesson”

Perhaps anticipating the storm, Ubisoft began defending its portrayal of French history well before Thursday’s release.

In an interview with French daily Le Monde, producer Antoine Vimal de Monteil admitted that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ had taken a few liberties, but insisted the game “shouldn’t be seen as a history lesson”.

There are numerous of these liberties. For example, the game - which is set in 1789 - features the French ‘Tricolor’ flag (not introduced until 1794) and the singing of the French national anthem, “La Marseilleise” (written in 1792).
