7.9 MAGNITUDE QUAKE HITS KATMANDU NEPAL KILLING 798 THUS FAR

Several century-old temples in Kathmandu collapsed on Saturday after the Nepalese capital was hit by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake. The death toll has already reached 758, Nepal's interior ministry said.

The quake struck west Kathmandu, causing buildings to collapse and leaving a pall of dust over the city, witnesses said.

The capital’s iconic Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site with century-old palaces and temples, was left in rubble according to pictures posted on social media. The Dharahara Tower, a landmark nine-storey structure built in 1832, also collapsed in the disaster.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue services rush to toppled office blocks in the capital. Casualties are also being reported in neighbouring India and Bangladesh.
