The U.S. has switched on an $800 million (700 million euro) missile
defense site in southern Romania Thursday, a move that has infuriated
Moscow.
"Both the U.S. and NATO have made it clear the system is
not designed for or capable of undermining Russia's strategic deterrence
capability," U.S. assistant secretary of state Frank Rose told a news
conference in Bucharest Wednesday.
"Russia has repeatedly raised
concerns that the U.S. and NATO defense are directed against Russia and
represent a threat to its strategic nuclear deterrent. Nothing could be
further from the truth," he said.
Rose instead cited Iran as the targeted threat.
"Iran
continues to develop, test and deploy a full range of ballistic missile
capabilities and those capabilities are increasing in range and
accuracy," he said.

"... It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings."....I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
