China's defense ministry on Thursday confirmed that it is building a
second aircraft carrier, amid Beijing's increasingly assertive behavior
in the South China Sea.
China's defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told reporters that the aircraft carrier is being built at the port of Dalian.
With a displacement of 50,000 tons, the new aircraft carrier
will be equipped with China's homegrown technology, Yang told a press
conference, according to the Chinese defense ministry's website.
The second conventionally-powered aircraft carrier will be
able to operate J-15 fighter jets and other fixed-wing aircraft with a
ski-jump takeoff, Yang said.
"We have a long coastline and vast sea areas under our
jurisdiction. Defending maritime security and safeguarding territorial
sovereignty and rights are the sacred responsibility of the Chinese
armed forces," Yang said.
China commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was purchased from Ukraine, in 2012.
