The U.S. has expressed concerns over the status of freedom of expression in South Korea following the recent accusations that Korean American Shin Eun-mi violated the law by making pro-North Korea remarks.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Friday that South Korea has shown a consistent and longstanding commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, but the U.S. is concerned that the National Security Law limits freedom of expression and restricts access to the Internet.
Psaki also said that the U.S. government takes its obligation to assist U.S. citizens overseas seriously and that all possible consular assistance will be provided to Shin.
The Korea Immigration Service decided to deport Shin after the prosecution determined she violated the National Security Law by making sympathetic remarks during a talk show last November. She is set to leave South Korea later Saturday evening.
