The Philippines remains at odds with China over a long-standing territorial dispute in the South China Sea. China's increasingly assertive presence in the region is motivating the Philippines to transform its military forces. NHK WORLD's Daisuke Kamikubo reports from Manila.
The Philippines will begin using FA-50 fighter jets next year. The combat aircraft was developed by South Korea and was fully deployed in October.
The fighter jet can be loaded with air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, as well as precision guided bombs.
The Philippine Navy has purchased two frigates from the US in recent years. The vessels are already in full use and frequently appear in the country's military exercises.
The Marine Corps purchased three helicopters from Italy. The Air Force also recently acquired eight combat helicopters.
The Philippines is keen to beef up its air and sea forces to counter China's increasing military presence in the South China Sea.
China practically controls an island in an area of sea claimed by the Philippines. Authorities in Manila suspect China is constructing a military runway on the island.
The Philippine government has long focused its security efforts on the battle with insurgent groups in southern Mindanao and other parts of the country.
Just over 70 percent of the country's 120-thousand military personnel belong to the Army. 17% belong to the Navy, and 13% to the Air Force. But the nation's military is being forced to change to counter China's increasing military presence.
