Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R) says he might consider suing the Obama administration over the crisis at the border involving the influx of unaccompanied minors from Central America.
"There are costs to all of this: the humanitarian crisis, healthcare, and law enforcement demands. As attorney general, I am looking into taking legal action against the United States," Abbott told conservative news outlet Breitbart News.
Since October, about 52,000 unaccompanied children have crossed into the U.S. illegally, and now the Obama administration is scrambling to respond to the crisis.
"Because of the increase in the cross-border influx and the strain on state resources, we have to revisit the amount the federal government picks up the tab for this," Abbott said. "We need to hold the federal government responsible for this."
Abbott, who’s running for governor this November, said a 1982 Supreme Court ruling has forced Texas to educate children whether or not they are in the U.S. illegally.
"This is a great frustration for Texas taxpayers. Plyler v. Doe hamstrings the State of Texas," he said.
Texas sued the federal government in the 1990s when it alleged officials failed to meet border security obligations. Texas said the federal government should reimburse the state associated costs for healthcare, law enforcement and education. The lawsuit ultimately failed in court.
