The number of casualties from earthquakes across the world has been very high during the past two decades. The deadliest earthquake prior to the latest incident was a 7.0-magnitude quake which rocked Haiti in 2010, taking 316,000 lives. A massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia in 2004, which triggered a tsunami, caused 227,898 deaths, making it the second deadliest earthquake. An 8.0-magnitude quake devastated China’s southwest province of Sichuan in 2008 leaving 87,587 people dead or missing.
