SEAWEED FROM KOREA–A SUPERFOOD EATEN AFTER GIVING BIRTH AND DURING A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Korean seaweed has captured the attention of the Wall Street Journal on the occasion of the island of Wando in the southwest of the country hosting the world's first international seaweed expo.

The Sunday section that brought it to readers' attention introduces unique customs and cultures of countries around the world and has covered topics like Belgian taxi drivers sprinkling holy water over their cars and roads for safety.
In the U.S., eating seaweed is still something of a novelty.

The expo was held for a month from April 11, and featured a wide range of products related to seaweed, from food and skincare products to bioethanol fuel.

Seaweed is regarded as superfood in Korea, the paper wrote. "Algae remain something of a global novelty as a daily diet, but in Korea seaweed (also called marine microalgae) is taken seriously as an elixir."
"Sea-mustard soup is traditionally a must-have for mothers after giving birth. The abundant iodine in it helps women restore blood and it heals wounds, Korean doctors say. It is also customarily eaten on birthdays for Koreans of all ages."

It's not a prayer, it's the national anthem, but that's the point.

Within Islam — uniquely, among world religions — such a doctrine has arisen, and has been elaborated, and has been written about, one that is based on both the letter and spirit of the Qur'an and on the example of Muhammad, the Model of Conduct (uswa hasana), the Perfect Man (al-insan al-kamil). See the assurances given the Meccans in the Treaty of Al-Hudaibiyya.

And what has been the behavior of Muslims, and Muslim organizations, in this country? Have they encouraged Muslims to report on that "tiny handful of extremists," or have they repeatedly refused to do so? Have Muslim organizations, and not only CAIR, exhibited a spirit of cooperation, or have they repeatedly urged Muslims not to voluntarily cooperate but to carefully go through them, and what's more, have encouraged Muslims to report any and all supposed "anti-Muslim incidents," all of which are scrupulously investigated, and almost all of which have been found to be baseless, or greatly exaggerated? Have they not encouraged in Muslims themselves, and in a credulous media that believes uncritically Muslim complaints, the idea that Muslims are being "victimized"?

A swarm of hundreds of earthquakes that has been striking a corner of the Nevada desert near the Oregon border for months has intensified in recent days, prompting new warnings from seismologists.   

About 750 earthquakes, mostly magnitude 2.0 to 3.0, have struck the area about 50 miles southeast of Lakeview, Ore., since the swarm started in July, said Ian Madin, chief scientist for Oregon's Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.

The Democratic National Committee is planning a "top-to-bottom assessment" of its campaign strategy after suffering worse-than-expected defeats in last week’s midterm elections.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.), who leads the group, announced Saturday that a committee will examine the party’s performance in the 2014 and 2010 elections.
"We are going to look at where we fell short. We're going to identify our mistakes," she said in a video that was sent to party supporters.
"Our party has a problem," she added.
The committee will specifically look at messaging, get-out-the-vote efforts and digital operations. It will form in the next few weeks and present a report at the organization's winter meeting in early 2015.
This year's midterms lost the Democrats a total of 12 House seats and seven Senate seats, a stunning blow that went beyond most election forecasts. The GOP also unseated three Democratic governors in historically blue states.
"I'm not going to gloss over the facts: On Tuesday, the Republicans had a good night. We didn't. We worked hard for months, we even won a few tough races, but it wasn't enough," she said.
In addition to losing control of the Senate this week, the Democratic party has lost 69 seats since Obama took office.
Democrats have historically struggled in midterm elections, which has a far lower turnout among younger and more diverse voters – a key part of the party’s base.
The party had better luck in 2012, however, when the president helped Democrats win back eight seats in the House.
