Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson — now making the transition from living legend to scrutinized candidate — faced new questions Friday about the way he tells his powerful life story.

For years, Carson has said he was offered a “full scholarship” to the U.S. Military Academy while he was a high-achieving high-school Army ROTC cadet in the late 1960s. But Carson never applied to West Point, was never accepted, and never received a formal scholarship offer. In fact, West Point does not offer scholarships; all cadets attend free.

The story was first reported Friday by Politico. Carson responded to the resulting controversy by saying that when he had spoken of an “offer,” he had been referring to informal, verbal statements of encouragement that he had heard from military leaders he met through the ROTC, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps .

“I was told that because of my accomplishments, they would be able to manage to get me into West Point and that I wouldn’t have to pay anything,” Carson said on the Christian Broadcasting Network. He said he decided not to apply and instead went to Yale University to pursue medicine. “There was no application process [at West Point]. I never even started down that path,” Carson said.

Carson’s campaign cast the episode as new evidence of persecution of the candidate by the news media. Tension between Carson and the media came to a boil Friday night in Florida, where at a combative news conference the candidate asked why President Obama had not been subjected to such scrutiny.

Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, who conducted the communist witch hunts of the 1950s; and Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace, the staunch defender of segregation.
These men inspired the worst in their followers. They scapegoated the weak and set Americans against each other. They used fear to stoke hate and thereby entrench their power.
Back to the current crop of presidential candidates: Who are the leaders, and who are the demagogues?
The leaders have sought to build bridges with those holding different views.
Rand Paul spoke at the University of California, Berkeley, for example, seeking common ground with the university’s mostly progressive students.
Bernie Sanders traveled to Liberty University, where most students and faculty disagree with his positions on gay marriage and abortion. “I came here today,” he said, “because I believe from the bottom of my heart that it is vitally important for those of us who hold different views to be able to engage in a civil discourse.”
Other candidates, by contrast, have fueled division. Ben Carson has said being gay is a choice. “A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay,” he said, “so did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”…..

The main union for construction workers is accusing President Obama of throwing them “under the bus” by rejecting the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) is one of the few labor unions that broke with the majority of Democrats and supported the project, which Obama rejected Friday after a seven-year review.
“We are dismayed and disgusted that the President has once again thrown the members of LIUNA, and other hard-working, blue-collar workers under the bus of his vaunted ‘legacy,’ while doing little or nothing to make a real difference in global climate change,” Terry O’Sullivan, the union’s general president, said in a statement. “His actions are shameful.”
The group’s statement cited a State Department report that Keystone could reduce greenhouse gas emissions when compared with oil transportation by rail.
“But facts apparently mean as little to the president as the construction jobs he repeatedly derided as insignificant because they are ‘temporary,’ ” O’Sullivan said. “Ironically, the very temporary nature of the president’s own job seems to be fueling a legacy of doing permanent harm to middle- and working class families.”
In Obama’s White House speech on the rejection, he dismissed the argument that the United States needs the jobs that Keystone would have created.
“If Congress is serious about wanting to create jobs, this was not the way to do it,” Obama said.
"If they want to do it, what we should be doing is passing a bipartisan infrastructure plan that, in the short term, could create more than 30 times as many jobs per year as the pipeline would, and in the long run would benefit our economy and our workers for decades to come."

Shoplifting is a common crime in the United States, but the number one stolen item in the country may surprise you.

Believe it or not, it’s meat.

Experts say meat thefts are reaching an all-time high because beef prices have soared in recent years.

“People steal stuff because they need it,” Joe Giacalone, a former NYPD detective, said. “And also, people steal stuff because of greed.”

“You only have so much money you can spend on groceries, so if the cost of ground beef goes up 30 percent to 40 percent, you have two ways of eating beef — eating less, or in this case, stealing it,” Jamie Schweid, of Schweid & Sons Burgers, said.

Schweid is a fourth-generation beef purveyor, whose company specializes in custom-blended ground beef, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported.
