House Republicans plan to fulfill a campaign promise and hold a vote next week on repealing the healthcare reform law.

The incoming House majority leader, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), announced Monday that the vote will take place on Jan. 12, one week after Republicans take control of the House.

Republicans will post the legislation Monday night on the website of the House Rules Committee, in keeping with their pledge to post bills at least 72 hours before they come to the floor for a vote. A procedural vote on the bill will occur Friday, Cantor’s office said.

"Obamacare is a job killer for businesses small and large, and the top priority for House Republicans is going to be to cut spending and grow the economy and jobs,” Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring said. “Further, ObamaCare failed to lower costs as the president promised that it would and does not allow people to keep the care they currently have if they like it. That is why the House will repeal it next week."

With 242 members, House Republicans should be able to pass the bill easily. There are 12 Democrats returning for the 112th Congress who opposed the healthcare bill last March, but two of them — Reps. Collin Peterson (D-Min.) and Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) — told The Hill on Monday that they would not vote to repeal the law.

Meanwhile, Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) is urging his colleagues to offer amendments to the repeal bill that would protect popular elements of the healthcare law, like a ban on insurance companies denying benefits because of pre-existing conditions.

European countries, Russia, India, and Japan already reprocess nuclear fuel — the actual materials used to make nuclear energy — to separate and recover the unused uranium and plutonium, reduce waste and safely close the nuclear cycle.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The 40th anniversary of the Clean Air Act underscores the importance of nuclear energy in meeting the nation’s environmental goals. Signed by President Richard Nixon on Dec. 31, 1970, the Clean Air Act has improved the quality of the air in most U.S. cities and communities.

Nuclear energy plants don’t burn anything, so they produce no combustion by-products. Last year, U.S. reactors prevented the emission of 2 million tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2), a precursur of acid rain, and 560,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a key component of ground-level ozone and smog. (Put another way, U.S. emissions of SO2 and NOxwould have been 2 million tons and 560,000 tons higher, respectively, if fossil fuels had generated the electricity produced by America’s 104 nuclear power plants.) In comparison, that same year, the U.S. electric sector emitted 5.8 million tons of SO2 and 2 million tons of NOx. In 2009, nuclear plants also prevented the emission of 647 million tons of carbon dioxide and thousands of tons of fine particulates.

Cowlitz County in Washington approved construction of a coal export terminal from which millions of tons of U.S. coal could be shipped to Asia annually.

Half of the 6 billion tons of coal burned globally each year is burned in China. A spokesman for the Sierra Club, which in recent years has helped to block construction of 139 proposed coal-fired plants in America, says, "This is undermining everything we've accomplished." America, say environmentalists, is exporting global warming. 


Can something really be exported if it supposedly affects the entire planet? Never mind. America has partners in this crime against nature, if such it is. One Australian company proposes to build the Cowlitz facility; another has signed a $60 billion contract to supply Chinese power plants with Australian coal.


The Times says ships — all burning hydrocarbons — hauled about 690 million tons of thermal coal this year, up from 385 million in 2001. China, which imported about 150 million tons this year, was a net exporter of coal until 2009, sending abroad its low-grade coal and importing higher-grade, low-sulfur coal from, for example, the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana. 


Because much of China's enormous coal reserves are inland, far from coastal factories, it is sometimes more economical to import American and Australian coal.
